Personality Summary: Nolan presents himself as cold, aloof, and collected with a tongue that is sharper than any blade and no sense for nonsense. He is a guarded and distrusting person, always looking for some sort of angle that they may be working from. Some may say that he is perhaps a bit too proud, and some may say that he is even uncaring though that is because they are only looking at the surface. Those that truly know Nolan is that beneath that exterior know he is gentle, kind, and thoughtful. That he is compassionate towards others and self-sacrificing even when he knows it'll only hurt him. They know that he is just a lonely and scared boy battling with his lifelong grief and heartbreak, afraid to let others in lest he be hurt again. Nolan does his best to present himself as a gentleman, but there are times when Nolan's past as a street urchin bubble up and he speaks in a way that could only be described as crude and uncouth. There are times when he would rather punch his problems into submission rather than talk them out, but he is an Edwards and he must show restraint for the sake of the family name. He is nervous whenever women are around him, anxious. Should a woman try to touch him he will instantly flinch out of habit and will put space between them and himself. Font of knowledge Magic Pickpocketing History Summary: In another life he was Nolan Waltz, the son of wealthy Varian merchants. In that life he was a happy, brilliant boy with two loving parents and not a single care with a promising future though it was snuffed out when he was nine years old. His parents personally went on a business trip to settle a deal when an avalanche tore through the mountain side and swept them away. Their bodies were never found. Nolan was to be sent to live with his aunt and uncle though a grieving child is volatile thing; unexpected outbursts are bound to happen though none could have prepared them for him. Ashes blacker than any night flecked with sparks of crimson and gold poured out of his mouth, swirling and dancing in his despair. To the horror of his aunt and uncle, Nolan was not just a mage, but a Witch Blood. Unbeknownst to them, his mother had teaching him magecraft to help him control his budding powers though his aunt and uncle failed to see a boy in need, but a stain upon their family. Fearing the stigma would follow them, they decided to get rid of Nolan though they lacked the stomach to have the boy killed, so they did the next best thing. One night they drugged him and through seedy connections he was brought to the black market. In his daze, Nolan could barely figure out what was happening to him. He was bought quickly by a wealthy Caesonian man because his wife "liked his face." By the end of that night, Nolan was locked in a box with barely enough air to breathe as he was smuggled over Varian's borders to Caesonia. He arrived in what could only be described a gilded hell; servitude was forced upon him and if he failed to perform the duties then he would face harsh punishment, but then again, even if he did everything right that did not stop his masters from hurting him anyway, especially the wife. She took particular enjoyment in breaking nice things. However, his only friend was another slave, an old Kimoon man from Alidasht; a mage that took him under his wing though he never told him his name, telling him that it was better that way. This man would give him his portion of food, whatever bedding he had to keep him warm, treat his wounds, and protect him in whatever ways he could. Above else, under the veil of night, he would teach the boy to fight and how to properly control his abilities and that was because the old man knew what would happen next. One day, Nolan was dragged to an underground fight and was tossed to the pit against another child. It was either Nolan or him. This was his life for two years, two long years of being abused by a cruel woman and then fighting for his life. Sometimes she would have him perform spells for her until one day it came to a head. The old man woke him up in the middle of the night and told him to get ready to leave. Vision hazy with sleep in his eyes he would not question the man until he smelled the acrid waft of smoke that permeated the air; the old man had set the place ablaze and, in that chaos, Nolan was able to escape. He never knew if the old man survived or not. For the first time in two years, Nolan was free, but what was left for him? He was in a faraway place where no one wanted him. For two more years he would live on the streets, stealing what he could to survive and enter underground fighting rings under pseudonyms just make whatever money he could. That was until one night after a fight a group angry that they lost their money because of Nolan and accosted him. Try as Nolan might, he could not fend them off without magic and was left in an alley way with a knife wound in his gut. The last thing he remembered was calling out to his mother and father before blacking out. Nolan did not expect to wake up, and he certainly did not expect to wake up in a hospital. When he came too, he was confused to how he even got there though no one answered his questions. For some reason the nurses were worked up and in a panic about alerting someone that he was awake. It was all still a blur to him. Eventually his rescuer had arrived, a posh looking, yet friendly man that went by the name of Gideon Edwards, the Duke of Sorian. Nolan was less than impressed, acting more like a distrustful stray though it did not bother the duke. When asked if his parents knew where he was, Nolan told him he had no parents, or anyone for that matter, in a country he could not call home. After some deliberation, the duke offered Nolan to come and stay with his family while he recovered, at least until he could figure something else out for him. At first resistant, refusing to take anyone's pity, he would relent when the other option was to enter an orphanage. It was a difficult adjustment to say the least. One day he's fighting for a nook in an alley to sleep in and the next he's standing in front of an opulent estate though the duke made every attempt to help Nolan adjust to his new situation though it was plain to see that Duchess Edward's was not so keen on the boy's presence. The boy was still naturally distrustful of everyone around him and found himself stressed out around girls his age and older, but that certainly failed to stop the duke from providing him with what he needed, starting with his education. What started as an attempt to help Nolan catch up with what he may have missed turned into a startling revelation that he was already somewhat educated, but also intelligent, incredibly so. Whatever he missed in his four years he made up for it quickly and then some. To the Edwards, it appeared they found a strange diamond in the rough. Over time, Nolan grew comfortable with the Edwards and perhaps began to form a bond with them if he allowed himself to acknowledge it, especially with Gideon. It was half a year later when Nolan was officially adopted by the Edwards and though he may never admit it, he worked hard for their sake as to not sully their name. At the age of 19 Nolan was one of the youngest graduates of Sorian University and works as a teaching assistant though there are times it feels like he does the bulk of the teaching though in the summer season he now works as a tutor for the children of noble families that need a spank than help with their grades. However, he has now been called back to attend the Courting Season, and he can only dread it for more than one reason.
