My favorite characters I've ever had are for a game on another forum. The setting takes place in a sleepy suburban American town where pretty much everything unusual happens, the "Nowhere, Kansas" of New England essentially. There are so many oddities in town that this woman decided to convert an old office building into a high school for kids with oddities, called Oddity High. I have two students in that game. The first is a boy named Gill. He's tall, he's pale, he's handsome, has red hair, and unnaturally grey eyes. a merman; in this setting, mermen and mermaids are beautiful, have hypnotic singing voices, can communicate with sea life, and cannot transform between legs and a tail. He was raised by parents who feared humanity and never wanted Gill to interact with humans. However, when he was six years old, they went out for a hunt and never came back. Gill was left alone in the ocean, longing for companionship, and he never saw another merman or mermaid again. When he turned 16, his longing became insatiable and he found a deep witch (a mysterious spirit being that resembles a jellyfish) who gave him the ability to grow legs and go onto land when he left the water, in exchange for "the color in his eyes". He accepted and not only did his eyes turn grey, but he's now colorblind-- he can only see in black and white, making it so he can't really appreciate the sights that the human world has to offer. Despite this, he's chipper and social, if rather naive due to his lack of knowledge of the human world. He ended up befriending a socially awkward, grumpy girl with the ability to shoot fire from her hands, and they ended up dating. The second is a girl named Jackie, raised in a fundamentalist household. She's short, with a modest figure and brunette hair in a bob. She was inspired by the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. As a little girl she was basically Mommy's Little Girl, dedicating herself to her parents, her schooling, and to God. But as she grew older, she found herself wanting to live her own life, but her domineering mother wouldn't let her. At some point, somehow, the defiant and rebellious parts of herself was shunted into a separate individual that she transforms to and from at random. This second personality became known as Heidi. When she transforms into Heidi, she grows taller, her figure fills out and becomes more curvaceous, her hair turns long and blonde, and her personality takes a radical shift. Heidi is rebellious, adventurous, flirtatious, swears like a sailor, disdains authority and refuses to compromise on anything. Her mother believed she had been possessed by a demon and tried to have her exorcised, which didn't work. Her base "Jackie" identity doubled down on being the responsible girl that always did what she was told, essentially being nothing but the filter that Heidi doesn't have. Jackie doesn't want anything for herself; Heidi ONLY cares about herself. Her mother enrolled her in Oddity High in the hopes that they could find a "cure" for her (read: get rid of Heidi and leave only the obedient Jackie self). Despite her best efforts, there is no sign of a cure, and indeed, Jackie is beginning to learn not to constantly follow orders and obey her parents unconditionally, learning to want things for herself. And Heidi is learning how to settle down and become a more caring person. She's currently ended up in a relationship with a girl (and is keeping it secret lest her bigoted mother have a conniption), a lesbian vampire also enrolled at the school who is nonetheless a total sweetheart. I hope those two learn to make it work.
