The House of Alfarling is an old house, having ruled Salt Spire for many generations. The oldest tales of the spire speaks of a fleet that arrived at the island before the Ninefold was created, and that fleet was led by Alfar, their namesake and greatest hero. He navigated the Kraken Sea, guided by the north star. From then on, Alfar and his descendants have made Salt Spire their home, surrounded by seas with strong currents and a tendency for fierce storms. Fish and salt were always plentiful on the spire, but other commodities only became plentiful once the people of the Spire took to raiding and piracy. Even once the Spire became a part of the Ninefold, these practices did not seize, and there have always been times when the other holds levied accusations of piracy against their own vessels by Salt Spire. The truth of such accusations varied over the years, but even now there is no doubt that the black and silver banners of House Alfarling can strike fear into the captains of merchant and military vessels alike. House Alfarling maintains that the Kraken Sea is their territory, just as much as the island of Salt Spire itself.

The island of Salt Spire is a barren place, rocky and windswept. It is inhospitable, even to those that make it their home. The island is dominated by a series of fells, between which the population is concentrated in a few protected valleys. The grassy hillsides are dominated by sheep and goats, and trees remain small and weather-beaten. The coasts are likewise ragged, often characterised by sheer cliffs, though where valley meets sea there are protected harbours. Between these, there are protected places in between cliffs, where fjords cut deep. Many ships use these to protect themselves from storms and remain safe from the sea, but they demand knowledge of currents and winds to be wholly safe. The Kraken Sea at large is dangerous to navigate, where winds swiftly change and the currents are unpredictable. This has spawned many tales of sea monsters that have taken the ships that never returned. More likely however, is that any ship lost was smashed against rocks by a storm or taken by boarding underneath banners of black and silver. House Alfarling’s power was never born out of trade, let alone the wealth of sheep and salt, rather power came from the knowledge and control of the Kraken Sea, and the many sailors that manned their ships.

This windswept spire and the storm prone seas that surrounds it have formed the people and live on island and sea. Above all, it has made the people and their rulers practical. After all, everyone is equal before the storm. Everyone must play their part on a ship that dares the storm, if they are to make it out alive. This means that responsibility and competency are the core values of the Spire, that the people live by. Sacrifice means nothing to a storm, but words are binding so long as they hold a purpose. The winds a fickle, but House Alfarling is not like the wind, nor are they like the storm. They are certain, they are the crew of a ship that would dare current, wind, and storm. Lord Beorthmaer has ruled the Spire for decades. He is a seasoned Lord, and once rowdy in his youth, this has given way to becoming diligent ruler and skilled tactician. Proud and stubborn, he was the first to raise his banners in support of King Leoric in response to the rebellion, and he was the last to abandon King Leoric and fold in Rowan’s favour. Oaths publicly spoken were not changed by the direction of fickle winds but only abandoned after Rowan secured an alliance with the Phorian Coast, and Leoric’s days as king were obviously numbered, and unable hold up his part of the feudal relationship. The fleet of Salt Spire withdrew in good order, allowing the Phorian fleet free access without battle. Only once Leoric was defeated did Beorthmear engage in negotiations to swear a new oath of fealty to a new king, and in these events preserving both his fleet and the perception that he followed his oath to its practical end. Beorthmear’s wife, Lady Inga, is his senior by several years and shares her husband’s practicality, even though hers is far less constrained by convention and perception. She remains utterly devoted to her children, and would commit any deed, however bloody, to secure their future. Beorthmaer has always been the public face of House Alfarling, attempting to maintain their perception and legacy, whereas Inga has always been his shadow.

Once the tanist and presumed heir of Salt Spire, Athelric Alfarling has long been regarded as the black sheep of the family. Equal parts adventurer, merchant, rouge, and pirate, he has none of the dutiful temperament that his father desired in his heir. Almost a decade ago, after repeated disputes over marriage, Athelric abandoned Salt Spire and sailed east with a handful of ships, to the great fury of Lord Beorthmaer.
Some say he spent the following years as a merchant captain, sailing between the ports of distant Karthos. Other rumours speak of piracy, slave trading, bloodshed, and even a secret family out in the east. The House of Alfarling acknowledges none of these rumours. In truth, Athelric discovered a world far greater than the harsh and storm-beaten rock of his birth. Wealthy city-states, opportunity, and freedom from the expectations that otherwise would constrain him. 

During his time in distant Karthos, he learned leadership amongst sailors, merchants and freebooters, making him something of both a charismatic negotiator and a capable commander. Hedonistic, arrogant, and self-centred at times, he nevertheless possesses something of an infectious enthusiasm for grand ventures. His dreams are not of Salt Spire or Aethoria, but of carving out a realm of his own across the seas, where wine will flow freely and his freedom without any constraint. To that end, he only recently returned, seeking wealth, ships and soldiers for another eastern expedition. 

Lord Beorthmaer no longer supports Athelric as heir, but his return has brought new hope to see him settled and wed. Unknown to Lord Beorthmaer, Athelric's refusal stems from desires he kept hidden on Salt Spire. The rumours of a wife and children in Karthos were encouraged by sister, in order to strengthen her own claim as heir and to shield him from unwanted scrutiny.

Aelfwynn Alfarling believed, ever since her older brother sailed east, that she was the future heir of Salt Spire. She is gregarious and diligent, but her father passed her over in favour of her younger brother, unwilling to place her at the head of the household and as heir to Salt Spire. She has not yet forgiven her father or younger brother for this slight.

Proud and confident in her own abilities, Aelfwynn is utterly convinced that she is the only choice for heir, as her older brother does not wish to be heir, and her younger brother is unworthy: bookish where he should be bold, weak when he must be strong, and simply unsuitable to rule Salt Spire. However much it frustrated her parents, she never made any secret of this opinion, and now their rivalry is public knowledge. Her ability to cultivate grudges with an impressive vindictiveness and callousness that borders on cruelty, she nevertheless has an equal ability to cultivate friends with warmth, generosity, and charm. 

She remains firmly convinced that her father’s decision is wrong and equally determined to reclaim the position which she believes was stolen from her. However, it is ultimately not power that she desires, but vindication, and acknowledgement from the kin that passed her over.  She does this by pursuing influence in order to outmanoeuvre her brother, secure a powerful husband or even rise beyond Salt Spire, to a much greater station. Every step she takes is proof she should have been heir. The results of these steps matter far less than hearing others admit the truth: she was right and her father wrong.

Cynric is the Tanist of House Alfarling, the chosen heir of Salt Spire. His mother believes he is destined for great things, recognising the potential in her favourite. He believes her, yet there is uncertainty in his heart due to responsibility that rests on his shoulders. He does not feel remotely ready, existing in the shadow of figures like his father and siblings. To them, he appears more comfortable with ledgers and books than swords, ships or sailors.  His father still views him as a soft boy and attempts to mould him into a younger version of himself. His elder brother never thought he amounted to much, and his sister openly scorns him as an unworthy pretender. Compared to all of them, Cynric often appears quiet, measured, and unremarkable in places where he does not feel comfortable. To friends however, he is generous and inspiring, enjoying good company, music, games, and most of all, he loves the affection of others. This love of affection and validation is also what makes him sensitive to disrespect and easy to slight. Beneath a pleasant exterior and intelligent demeanour is a young man who dwells on insults, struggles with forgiveness, and fears being exposed as less capable, and judged as inadequate by those whose approval he craves most.
