Of course just not getting any taller doesn't mean she hasn't grown at all; Hazel is far from athletic, and her dress size is bigger than most girls her age. She normally doesn't get embarrassed with her curves and pudginess, but she does have bad days... and tends to wear more loose fitting clothes because of it. Her skin is paler than its natural shade due to her indoor lifestyle. She has a truly massive amount of brown hair (including thick eyebrows), and though she's able to keep it clean there's no helping the fraying and split ends. Her bangs hang over her face, slightly obscuring a pair of glasses-protected, bright green eyes. She also has a small beauty mark on the right side of her neck, and a thin scar on her left shoulder just below the clavicle.
Personality:
Hazel is more of an introvert, and though shy and generally anxious she does like talking with people and getting to know them. She especially loves hearing about fun or interesting things, and is happy to let people talk all they want without herself saying a word. She isn't very confident in herself, and tends to take a cautious, measured approach to most things, but it isn't often she actually does anything outside the limited realm of her experience. She has a tendency to stutter when she's nervous, sometimes even overreacting with rebuttals and apologies as the situation calls for it, but opens up more in more familiar circumstances or with people she knows. Very much a "every Growlithe is a Pyroar at home" sort of person. She is well read and acts like a typical fangirl on the inside or online, in contrast to her much more skittish personality in real life. Although wary of a lot of things, she does possess a strong sense of curiosity that sometimes guides her actions until her brain catches up with her and she pulls back. Perhaps there is a stronger girl buried inside her somewhere, and if her shell is broken that intrepid side can make its debut in the real world and not just her fantasies. The secret desire to embody the heroes of her favorite stories never quite disappeared even after she got older, after all.
Backstory:
Some might find it hard to believe that Hazel only ended up as a Pokémon trainer completely by accident. She wrote up an application, yes, but she hadn't intended to ever actually send it. She'd given up on aspirations such as being a Pokémon trainer before they even really fully formed. Hazel grew up as the only child of a pair of plain, hard working parents. Both her father (a rank and file businessman that could only find a job outside of Peltra and often traveled even farther to negotiate contracts in person) and her mother (who transitioned to being a stay-at-home mom after being laid off like plenty of others in town) were practical, cautious types - helicopter parents that wanted to shield their beloved daughter from the world. There were delinquents and hooligans like Claw in town, wild Pokémon outside of it, and even worse things further still, they told her, so it wasn't a surprise that she grew to be a quiet, studious kid; a book wurmple that was content to tuck herself into the corner of her room and pursue safe, simple hobbies. But a careful, uneventful childhood did not make for a confident kid. Every year Hazel's self-esteem shrunk as she began comparing herself to others. She wasn't strong or adventurous, or even all that smart despite the studying she did. Sometimes she'd talk or play with the other kids in town, but she didn't have any close friends to share experiences with. Maybe it was because of this that she grew to like reading so much. For the most part she was content to get her excitement from the books she read, stories of princesses, heroes, and Pokémon of all kinds. Reading the journeys of fictional characters, or the biographies of real, accomplished trainers sated most of her desire to chase adventure for herself. That kind of thing was dangerous in real life after all. But sometimes... sometimes the catchphrases of the protagonist in her favorite series of light novels wound itself around her heart, and stuck itself into the corner of her thoughts. Wings of wonder take you farther than a cage of caution! The only thing separating impossible from possible is two letters! But could Hazel actually do well out there in the world? The one time she'd tried to overcome her nervousness by tagging along on a little wilderness expedition organized by her classmates, she'd ended up getting hurt. It wasn't a serious wound, but the blood made it look like a bigger deal than it was. Worse than the queasiness, the pity of the other kids, and the smothering worry of her parents was the fact that Hazel had technically done it to herself. It had been getting dark, and there were scary noises and shadows in the trees. A twig had snapped loudly next to the group, spooking the kids, and even though their leader shouted that it was nothing, Hazel had startled and run away. Being clumsy and in the dark meant that she tripped, fell down a small ravine, and cut up her shoulder on something sharp on the way down. If she'd stood her ground it wouldn't have happened, but she had been too afraid. Since recovering she stuck to her stories, and when she got older amused herself with writing out her own fictional adventures and filling out applications posted to the internet seeking trainers, trailblazers, and volunteers. In a weird, vicarious way, going through the process of meticulously filling out online paper work but never sending it, and then keeping track of the projects where she could meant Hazel felt a little sense of fulfillment. She could imagine she was a Corviknight cab driver, or an ancient ruins explorer, or even a famous diva of the Contest stage... for a little bit. Then it was back to reality until she got sucked into the next book, or filled out the next doomed application. So it was just a normal night, many years after her failed group adventure, when Hazel came across Professor Camphor's call for assistants and newbie trainers. Like usual she diligently filled out the application for a wistful dream, and then promptly moved it to her PC's recycle bin. Or so she thought. What she'd actually done was submit it (why do websites use drag and drop instead of dedicated upload buttons?!). When the professor's reply came she was surprised, but quickly deduced what happened and expected a simple copy and paste rejection when she opened it up. But the contents... and the apparent expensive bill they'd send her if she didn't show up?! Hazel was hardly thinking when she flew around her room, hastily throwing things into a bag before practically vanishing into the night, headed for Byjerlfal. She didn't want to get in trouble, and she especially didn't want to saddle her parents with a huge expense on top of more worry. She really had no choice but to go! Maybe she could explain the mistake in person. But then again... those sayings still stuck with her all these years. Were two letters really all it took to keep her caged?
