That's right, it's not about needing a sister-game, it's about merchandising! Could you imagine the wasted profit margins if we only had one version?

Then make a third version that becomes more popular and is more cohesive than the other two, only to then make the sudden last second shift to make it a small-batch limited edition that sells like hotcakes on the secondhand market for decades to come and people complain they didn't make enough of to sell in the first place becuse you hiked the third version's price by 25-50% over the normal ones. Then ignore its existence in everything else but the eventual tie-in anime series, claim the game didn't sell well enough when talking to shareholders and then let the convo leak in order to ragebait the fans into making it more popular. Proceed to sell more games and forge a game and anime series from it, and sell overpriced plush toys while using lawsuits and legal terror tactics to stop all the Etsy and online folks making homemade versions of those toys and characters in order to maximize profit margins for the shareholders and to afford your fifth yacht for the grandkids to (under no supervision whatsoever) play with on the lake. Years later, then, sell an anniversay run and special contest-won copy one or two generations (human generations that is) later in order to stoke nostalgia. Except this newer run of it is a current-game-gen revamp, and they get rid of two of the good mechanics that others loved due to changes in the games market, added a battle royale mode to try to get the by-now ancient Fortnite fans and younger ones alike, and replaced one of the fan faovrite side character with a 'current gen sterotype or utter streotype of people we want to buy the game who don't buy these games ever' who has an overpowered team 'just because' in order to get articles made praising your game. Never give copies to people who would ever review this version badly, or who would even have just partial-positivity about it. Shilling all the way, baby! And no 7/10s for 'too much water' here, no sir! Then claim it was a cultural icon and success for the ages and a triunph! Then expand your way into becoming a franchise! A legally aggressive one with sharp teeth and little arms [s]a T-Rex of a franchise, if you will[/s], who stalks its prey with all the grace and subtelty of a drunk coyote pack howling at the moon and stumbling about a forest at 2am as if they were a bunch of college students at a party college.
