Each individual ship takes up its specified space, so if you buy a set of 4 heavy support craft, that fills a whole hanger, full 4 light support is half a hanger, only the strike craft take up their set space as a squadron.

Also in regards to that list its more cost effective to get the special hangers to house 'Oldships', the oldships hanger (5sp, holds 1 oldship only) or the private hanger (10sp, 2 oldships or a 'super squadron' which not even the legacy characters can get just yet, though a few of us meet (almost) all the requirements.)
