Agnes had heard the announcement. She had spent a lot of time going over ever possible scenario in her head, if she were to go. What if someone tried to speak to her? She didn't even want to be in a club, not if it meant she had to be around people. But there could be something quiet, where she could do stuff. And mother would be proud, she probably wouldn't lecture for weeks. Maybe. Yes. Okay. Agnes left the room, closing the door behind her and slipping the key into her bag. She walked quickly to the hall, but hesitated before entering. She could hear the rumble of voices, how many people could be in there? It was a scary prospect. She swallowed hard and entered, promising herself she'd be brave. There were different stands for different clubs. She studied them all but couldn't bring herself to move from her spot. Brave. She had to be brave here. Art club. She liked art. She could do art. She slowly approached the stand where there was a club representative. Okay, it wasn't that difficult. She had all the words in her head. She could just say it. Ask about the club. Be charming. Be sweet. Be anything. The woman turned to her. "Hi there!" she grinned. Agnes opened her mouth but nothing came out. It felt dry. "...s-sorry. I... want to sign up?" The woman started talking about the club. Agnes tried to concentrate but her head was pounding. She was really embarrassed. The woman handed a clipboard to her. "Just write your name." she smiled. Agnes nodded. Her handwriting was small and cursive. She normally took time with it, but she wanted to get away quickly. Once it was over she walked away, fast. 'Be more confident', her mother had said. And she had.
