What if, instead of killing her, the horcrux of the diary used Ginny as a way to recruit or harm those that opposed Voldemort? The horcrux of Harry's scar could have merged with his dark thoughts as well and that could lead to both a dark Ginny-Draco and a Harry-Hermione a few years down the road.
