He had already been living with the colony, thinking Castille had died along with his parents(he had just moved out a few months before the first attack by the robots to live with his new wife). Needless to say it was a warm reunion when Kenji brought his ten year old sister to the colony and they had been very close again up until she sacrificed herself for the raid group. He somewhat blamed himself for her being taken, considering he had refused to go on the raid because he had stayed up late the night before and was tired.
