I can see where he's coming from considering the state he was in when we 'found him' left a lot to the imagination. What if rather than a straight fanfic, you did a dossier Grey Fox style. Several accounts of small-time adventurers who claimed to be the Dohvakhiin after the original disappeared. Since he had no affiliations other than the Greybeards and later the Emperor, a suitable set of armour and a gruff voice would be all you'd need to fool the hamlets they'd prey upon.
