He studied in archaeology at Harriot Watt and went on to gain a Doctorate in the subject before he discovered a keen eye for politics. He worked for several years as a MSP in the Scottish Parliament before he was hired by the IOA in 2006. He spent the best part of three years working as a liaison at the SGC as a replacement for the IOA members who repeatedly got themselves replaced or killed, however despite this he took on the task with new gusto. While he still wasn't popular, such a thing is impossible for an IOA representative he wasn't out right hated like several of his predecessors and was known for having the ability to keep both the IOA and the SGC happy. Which is why in 2009 he was set to replace Camille Ray at Icarus Base before it came under attack by the Lucian Alliance and the team was sent to destiny. He went back to work at the SGC and after Atlantis' return to the Pegasus Galaxy he took over for Woolsey in trying to convince the Langarrans to allow them to use their planet to dial the ninth chevron. When the Tempest had been assigned its mission Adam was re-assigned to the ship due to his experience in the SGC and with the IOA. He was also the favoured choice by the UK government due to his roots back in Edinburgh. However, despite this he always kept up in his research of historical studies and kept as much up to date with the SGCs findings as possible.
