Well, more traditional powder explosives really, but as far as Vera knows it's witchcraft. It's either to destory whatever entrance the Night Lurkers are coming from, or to blow up whatever big bad bug leads them. Cause there's only so much you can do with a sword that is comparatively a toothpick to a giant monster. I suspect it's a giant monster anyways.
