Morning! I found out more about the animagi situation, if anyone is interested.

So, animagus is a part of a sub-class of transfiguration called Human transfiguration. Human Transfiguration includes animagus, werewolf, and metamorphmagus. Human Transfiguration spells are taught at NEWT level in sixth and seventh years.
