After 72 hours I suppose like a tourney, you can write the presence of the character but just move past them. If it is in mid fight well you know those rules, 48 hours before connect, if they miss a deadline again then killing blow. If they have informed you of some reason they will be late then you can work it out with them and pick it up later.
