What purpose is the secondary human character suppose to serve in the game? Does this mean we'd have to play two character's in the game?

Sorry for the questions, But I just wanna make sure I have a decent grasp on what you're expecting/wanting for this game, as well making sure that it's something that I might be able to commit to (if I can come up with a character before all the slots are filled).
