Merlin is known for being extremely powerful and a specialist in charms, Voldemort has never really used any potions except the one that gave him a body, and he mostly uses dark magic. I'm not saying potions aren't powerful, it just seems like JK Rowling never really showed any Slytherins who were the most famous for them. even Salazar Slytherin is said have been a specialist in Legilimency, and deosn't mention anything about potions.
