Jaldoa had some significant distance to cover to reach Chester after he zoomed away, and then got blasted even further away from the magic. I might have overstated the distance a bit, but I think you also read him as being in a tree. That wasn't technically true, but I just rolled with it. 

Honestly, your Vertex's weren't always easy for me to visualize, just an issue with that sort of an attack I suppose. However, Jaldoa is in essence an ambush fighter, it made logical sense for him to run away after the conflict wore on for any length of time.
