It wouldn't have been hostile if you didn't attack it first, but it wouldn't have understood your speech or even payed attention to you. It would have started climbing up the cliff eventually (If not attacked), causing the entrance to the cave to collapse and trap anyone who was still in there inside. And it wasn't a spirit, it was a golem.
