You see that stretch of land over the Sea of Echoes that Perhyr owns? It's held to be a sort of lookout for pagan raiders ("not-wildlings/freefolk/vikings"), there's no grandoise wall (great wall, etc.) but there are plenty of forts and small stretches of stone or palisade walls probably though.

Oh...I'll find a way. XD Maybe just go with a city guard or royal guard, but still a soldier nonetheless.

And about the gunpowder thing...I dunno, you could have gunpowder weapons be slow, inaccurate without expensive and custom machining and sometimes downright dangerous for the user.
