Most of the books from the late 80's and early 90's are pretty weird, to be honest. The Thrawn trilogy was good, but it seemed like EU writers couldn't help but repeat the same material over and over again. I certainly hope there's a few nods to the EU-verse in the new movies, but I'm expecting them to break pretty cleanly with EU canon. It's heartbreaking, especially now that there will be new media that centers around the new Star Wars movies conflicting with books still set in the old EU-verse, but it was going to happen. You're not going to force JJ Abrams to write around a bunch of already-established canon, not if you expect him to work his magic properly.
