The Jewish laws and customs outlined in the Old Testament have no baring on Christianity, and the story of the Israelites is not an example of how Christians are called to act. Jesus directly contradicts many Old Testament passages. Christianity is the religion of Christ, of Jesus of Nazareth, not Abraham and the Israelites. If a piece of legislation is revised, you cannot defend yourself in court by saying that your actions were in line with the older, now obsolete legislation. The story of the Israelites serves as context for the arrival of Jesus.
