The Prophecy OOC - Epic High Fantasy Adventure Introduction This is a roleplay quite beyond the regular standards when it comes to the incredible extent of details that are determined about the world in which it takes place, as well as those that will be determined before its completion. But at the same time as the world is elaborately defined, the plot of the roleplay offers great freedom within the bounds of the world. The main plot of this roleplay is that of an epic medieval adventure fantasy tale, with major plot-points partially derived from the series novels called The Prophecy, with most details taken from the first book of the yet unpublished series The Prophecy of the Withering by L. K. Petersen aka Dark Jack (that would be me). The style of the roleplay is that the storyline is extremely flexible, allowing the players to take their characters on detours and side-quests of their own design if they so chose, while only main plot-events are predetermined, although the outcome of these might not be. The roleplay will, aside from the main adventure-element, also have elements of war, and it offers the freedom for the players to even make it a semi-social roleplay in which their characters may develop relationships, and even marry and have children, as long as it does not cripple the plot for the rest of the players. The Nomad's Prophecy The prophecy spoken by the Nomad at the end of the Age of Darkness, just before he disappeared and was never seen again. "The Foe" is presumed to refer to Kreshtaat, the Lord of Darkness and the leader of all demons of the Lower Plane. Once there shall be a disaster like never before, Which will shame the rich and crush the poor, Because even with the Spirits on our side Break, will the once-great Divide. The land in the middle a curse will suffer, That will turn father on son, sister on brother. Lives will wither away and be gone, A darkness will shatter all hope as we know, In the lands of sand, in the lands of snow. In the end, this evil will have spared none. A new Age of Darkness will arrive, And will try to mortals their freedom deprive, Gods and demons, locked in eternal battle, And mortals in the middle, the helpless cattle. But amidst what is already bad, There is a greater evil to be had. The Foe will rise once more, Step onto a world covered in gore. Unless all unite against this beast, He will upon the world return to feast. Death it is, a being of madness, Of power unmatched rage and sadness. Pray, for fate will truly be grim, The Foe will end this world on its whim. Additional details about the Planes (The Prophecy-universe) are available in the Compendium. Guidelines I realize that many of these guidelines are probably superfluous, but bear with me; it is better to be safe than sorry. - All character applications are posted in this thread. - No godmoding. Don’t go around and controlling other people’s characters, that’s just annoying. - No instant death. Actually links to the previous rule, since it requires that you control another character to kill it. Another player-controlled character can only die if the RP'er agrees beforehand. - Kissing, hugging and such is allowed, and so is mating to a certain extent – but do NOT go around and describe the entire act of mating. If anything, make a time-skip from when the act begins to when it ends. We don’t want any vulgarities here. Take it to PMs if you really need to type it out. - While there are no direct limits on how powerful your character may be, nor what race it can be, please refrain from being completely invincible. Remember, there are others playing here too. If your character is too politically or personally powerful, I reserve the right to require you to change the character or outright deny it. - Posting is not allowed until I have approved your character. - Each IC post should maintain a decent length and should offer at least some development for your character or the plot. The current minimum length of IC posts is two proper paragraphs, but I retain the right to change this at any time. The quality of your writing should be at least borderline advanced. - Once it is your turn to post, please at least give a situation- and/or progress-report if you are delayed from posting by a week, and another periodically at least once a week from then, if the delay becomes extreme. If you expect to be unable to post for two weeks or more, please tell us in advance. - If you find yourself unable to post for a long period of time (a month or more), please consider allowing for your character to be carried during your incapacitation, preferably while giving relatively brief and manageable instructions on how to handle this OOC. - Communicate. If there is any doubt as to which player is the next to post, please address this doubt OOC as soon as possible; ask if the other player intends to post rather than waiting to see if they will. In fact if you have questions in general, don't hold back: a question asked is potentially a mistake avoided.
Previously, in The Prophecy: Having been lured to the grand annual black market gathering at the settlement of Borstown in the duchy of Nemhim, agents in service of various organizations of good and evil alike, among these being those destined to be the first members of the Companions, went in search of an alleged cure for the Withering that was supposed to be auctioned off this day. When the "cure" was finally revealed, however, it turned out that the auction was in fact an elaborate trap by the Crusader's Guild with the purpose of eliminating competition in search for the cure to increase the odds of them ultimately having monopoly on said cure if it was ever discovered. Unfortunately for the scheming crusaders their plot was foiled when several knowledgeable individuals in the crowd recognized the "cure" as actually being the highly volatile alchemical substance known as Liquid Fire, and the auctioneer's plans to sacrifice himself to catch the seekers of the cure in an explosion were thwarted, the auctioneer killed and the Liquid Fire recovered safely. Many died in the ensuing struggle between the gathered seekers of the cure and the remaining crusader forces in Borstown, but thanks mainly to the efforts of the future Companions the crusader forces were wiped out and most of the seekers survived the encounter. In the aftermath of the battle the first Companions finally gathered to meet for the first time and, united by their common desire to see an end to the Withering, they agreed to combine forces for the sake of ending the plague. Under leadership of Squire Jaelnec of the Will, the Companions uncovered information from the vanquished crusaders that information on the Withering could be found in the village of Shrubnest, and so their quest began. In Shrubnest, the Companions found both new allies and new enemies, for as was soon discovered the grand manor overlooking the village had been besieged by even more cultists of the Crusader's Guild, as they, too, sought to claim the holder of information there. Luckily the crusaders were weakened in the wake of a goblin assault, and after a precarious battle, the Companions were ultimately triumphant, and with the crusader-threat gone from the forest-settlement, the Companions entered the manor to claim what they had come for. The master of the manor turned out to be one Gerald Glass, an arcane sorcerer and scholar who was exiled from Zerul for the practice of necromancy. From him, the Companions learned much of the Withering, including that it is not a disease of the body, but of the soul, gradually draining the energy of those inflicted with the dread plague until they eventually succumbed, leaving little doubt that the Withering is truly of magical nature and inflicted upon the world intentionally. Even more worrisome was the fact that Gerald, as a necromancer, had observed that the Withering appeared to devour every last shred of the soul, making it very likely that those claimed by the Withering were not only killed by it, but were eventually completely erased from existence and denied even the possibility of an afterlife. Luckily they also found hope in Shrubnest, for Gerald knew of several locations throughout Rodoria where those afflicted with the plague had supposedly recovered inexplicably, and one of the Companions - a free deigan by the name of Meila - turned out to have a father that was apparently one of the lucky few that had experienced such a miraculous recovery. After some discussion, the Companions eventually decided to seek out Meila's father in Zerul City, and Gerald agreed to follow them, albeit only as far as to the Anaxim Forest, another site of recurring inexplicable recoveries. As the Companions rested at the Shrubnest manor, however, an unknown force of darkness in their midst began to awaken in one Paladin of Liya, which was in fact an abomination in disguise: the result of a union between a demonspawn and its own Dread Mother, a True Child of Himyth, known among demonspawn as their True Sister. While most were ignorant or at least unsuspicious of this, the Sekalyn warrior and follower of Koraakan, Aemoten, grew wary of the deceiver and beseeched his deity to learn the truth of her. Armed with this new knowledge Aemoten went to Jaelnec to recommend that they slew this vile fiend before it could do more harm. Young, naïve and feeling a debt towards the True Child, however, Jaelnec refused, opting instead to keep the true nature of their dark passenger a secret from the rest of the Companions, and their knowledge thereof a secret from the True Child herself. The Companions set out the next day and began the journey towards Zerul City, but as it turned out, the road to their destination was fraught with perils. The ephemeral peace that settled over the Companions from the monotony of the road came to an abrupt end when the Companions set up camp for the night in the forest of Schaxathris, the site of the ruins of an ancient Grand Church of Reina built by the Gazzeral when they still ruled the land. Here the Companions encountered other travelers, but none more fateful than Thaler the Daywalker, who was unfortunate enough to encounter the True Child alone in the ruined church. Thaler used a mysterious power upon the True Child which disoriented the fiend and caused her to stumble further into the ruins. When the other Companions arrived in search of the True Child, they found only Thaler, ambushed by vampires that made the church their lair. Combat ensued, and although the vampires proved formidable foes they were slain as any others that had stood before the Companions, but not before the True Child - cut off from the others as she was - had been terribly wounded, and a deep-seated distrust had been sown between her and Thaler, who joined the Companions. Or so it would seem, but in reality, her condition was due to her almost regaining her true form as a three-quarter demon. But even with the vampires gone, the Companions' trials in Schaxathris were not yet over. For reasons unknown - perhaps as retribution for his vampire followers, perhaps for a design beyond mortal comprehension or perhaps just for his own amusement - Rilon's meddling hand came to rest upon the shoulder of a Companion called Immanuel, and by Rilon's will, Immanuel became a soulless being known as a Harvester. The Companions fought the Harvester briefly, but although it appeared they could ward off the nightmarish monster Immanuel had become it was clear that they had no means to destroy him. Luckily Immanuel, perhaps drawing upon the last remnants of his rapidly fading humanity, decided to leave rather than persist attacking the Companions, and went to the west. The remaining Companions, while shaken, survived, and the next day continued their journey. When the Companions reached the Anaxim Forest, and the time to part ways with Gerald finally came, they were faced with yet another emergency, for as they stood upon the fringe of the grand and ancient forest, a Melenian hunter called Natyr emerged from amongst the trees, hunted by more than two hundred savage goblins, which now counted the Companions as their prey, forcing them to defend themselves. The Companions fought valiantly, but the goblins were abundant and relentless in their assault, and although the Companions miraculously all survived the desperate struggle, none emerged unscathed. As the last goblin fell, Gerald was nowhere to be seen, having vanished into the forest and abandoned the rest to their own devices. The blame for their bad fortune in the battle was blamed mostly on the True Child, who had charged the enemy when she had been instructed to stand her ground and thus broken formation. Jaelnec tried his best to keep the peace in their own ranks, but preventing enmity within the group proved impossible, and as the True Child descended further and further into darkness, her rivalry with Aemoten and Thaler intensified. Sadly, this was not enough trials for one day, for as the Companions left the blood-soaked battlefield littered with goblin corpses, they ventured to a nearby pond to recuperate and set up camp for the night. Alas, when Jaelnec tried to restore peace to the group here, all he ultimately managed to do was to antagonize the True Child enough so that she lashed out at him emotionally, setting into motion a chain of events that lead to Jaelnec briefly becoming the avatar of an unknown primal entity before being pacified, and this, in turn, finally made the True Child reveal her true form. She and several of the other Companions fought a bloody battle, one which ended lives and left many scarred on body and soul alike, for in her real form, the True Child was powerful indeed. Jaelnec, upon recovering from his momentary possession, was so confused and in such emotional turmoil that he attacked Aemoten rather than the fiend, and although the attack was prevented, the deed could not be undone. In the end, it would seem that this battle would end with the deaths of the True Child and Aemoten both, but in the last possible moment an enigmatic masked figure appeared out of nowhere to stop the fight. He seized the True Child, and the two vanished, leaving the Companions to lick their wounds before traveling onwards, significantly fewer in numbers and all bearing the marks of the betrayal upon if not their flesh then at least their minds. Burdened by the consequences of his decision to keep the True Child alive and protect her as a comrade, Jaelnec found that he no longer found himself worthy of leadership and forfeited the position to Aemoten, who accepted and became the new leader of the Companions. Under his guidance, they ventured on. Several days passed before the Companions reached a small ferry across the Sloth's River, where they found that Jillian, a witch - a practitioner of black magic who had fled Zerul City shortly before, leaving only the corpses of those who would stop her in her wake - had massacred everyone present at the site of the ferry with a spell gone out of control, and although Brand, a Cleric of Hazzergash, tried to protect her and cover up what had happened, Jillian's insolence eventually caused first Brand to turn against her, and then Hazzergash's flames to turn against Brand. Although Jaelnec tried to save the demon-worshipper, Brand perished from his injuries, his death ultimately inevitable. The Wayward Witch, however, survived, and although they would not tolerate her company because of what she had done and the way she behaved, the Companions spared Jillian's life. After giving her a helping hand and some supplies for the road, the Companions parted ways with Jillian and headed across Sloth's River on their own, continuing their journey towards Zerul City and their destination. They would need supplies themselves to make this journey, though, and had one last stop before the city itself, in a small border-post of Zerul. Although things appeared to finally proceed smoothly for the Companions, dark events took place during their stay at the Zerulic border-post that would quickly lead to what was doubtlessly the greatest threat they had yet faced. In the dark of night, Thaler's dreams were haunted by Rilon the Blood God, who was then revealed to have been her nameless tormentor since her early childhood. In a moment of weakness Thaler made a deal with Rilon, and learned his identity in return for taking up the god's Relic, Black Thorn, becoming his champion and shedding blood in his name. Upon waking, the Companions was confronted with this deal as the god's sword had materialized with Thaler, and Aemoten refused to accept this. He demanded that Thaler rid herself of Black Thorn, suggesting trading the Relic to another god in return for protection against Rilon's vengeance; an idea that Thaler did not agree with. During their arguing over this, their exchange was witnessed by what proved to be Blood Crows - avian agents of Rilon's will - and through them Rilon learned of their plans and immediately moved to prevent the loss of his Relic. A perilous struggle ensued, for even as Thaler beseeched the god Koraakan to help them and offering him Black Thorn for his assistance, Rilon stirred even more horrors from beneath the border-post: a group of yths. As the fight went on, the Companions fending off the creatures from below while Rilon and Koraakan clashed in an effort to claim Black Thorn, it became clear that this was no normal infestation of yths. Though the creatures initially encountered merely seemed to possess coordination and intelligence unusual for their kind, soon an yth emerged that had clearly been altered by piaan, and which proved to have previously been shackled to a wall in the basement. Even so the yths were slain, though several guardsmen lost their lives fighting them. Rilon would not suffer the Companions’ success, however, and manifested a second incarnation in the form of a child of himself to deal with them personally. Incredibly Olan, somehow able to resist the Blood God’s commands, managed to destroy that body, only to be subsequently mauled by the hands of another incarnation of Rilon, suffering a grievous and mortal wound. At this time Koraakan wrestled Black Thorn from its maker, however, and through the influence of the Relic and by the terms of Thaler’s deal, he bid Rilon to depart and healed all of the Companions. Olan, however, had lost his memory to the ordeal. Though order was restored, the peace did not last long as the nature of the yths was questioned. It was discovered that the commanders of the border-post, a lieutenant and a sergeant of the Ducal Guard, were behind the yths, though for different reasons. While the lieutenant repented and surrendered, the sergeant proved to be the true orchestrator of the crime, and turned out to be an agent of the Death Clan. Consuming a strange artifact, he claimed to become the “First Nephelim” through the essence of Kreshtaat, and though he faced both Aemoten and Jaelnec, he proved a fearsome opponent indeed, even managing to chip Jaelnec’s supposedly indestructible Sartal sword. Once the cultist was dead and the lieutenant in chains, calm settled anew, and as the dust settled, the Companions set out to continue their journey. On their way to Zerul City the Companions encountered a strange group of foreign people, recuperating after a battle against a ravenous lohk: Claw, Iridiel and Domhnall. Finding at least the latter two agreeable, the Companions decided to stay with them a while, which provided especially Aemoten with some much-needed rest. It would appear that Iridiel and Domhnall will accompany the Companions to Zerul City when they continue on their way. Meanwhile, Jillian began her own tale, forging southward with the intent of entering the Anaxim Forest in search of Gerald, purpose and power. But her tale did not look to have a gentle start, for as she entered she was addressed by Anaxim - an ancient Living Wood, the true nature of the Anaxim Forest - which revealed that the forest was under assault by the Crusader's Guild as the cultists sought to recover the Demon Prison of Hazzergash, which was revealed to have been hidden in the forest for millennia. Two thousand men were pitted against the forest, lead by Kevalorn the Holy himself, a man pretending to be a high priest but who is in fact an avatar hosting the disembodied spirit of Hazzergash himself. The forest was preparing a desperate defense to hold back the invaders, and as Jillian offered her assistance in this, she was taken to Gariel Downs deep within the forest by the green dragon Lailonsaire. There she and the other defenders of the forest awaited the enemy approaching from the south, which marched upon them en masse, bringing with them ferocious belagons and vicious wyverns. The forest brought all of its forces and strength to bear on the Guild, used every trick at its disposal, but while the wyvern-riders rule the sky, the Anaximite defenders falter before the sheer numbers of the crusaders. Jillian and her new ally, Gerald Glass, made a valiant attempt at turning the tide of the battle by wiping out the skyward menaces, exhausting their entire magical reserve to in order to clear the way for the last gambit of Anaxim; two dragon sisters, who decimated the groundbound crusader forces. But alas, even as the crusader army was broken, the Anaximite defenders did not have the strength to subdue Kevalorn the Holy, and with Jillian and Gerald indisposed, the avatar of Hazzergash finally took the scene and wiped out the last defenders. Jillian and Gerald had no choice but to flee lest they fall to the abomination as well, and fled the Anaxim Forest on the back of Renold, the elder green dragon, thus sealing the fate that the forest would suffer at the hands of the vengeful demon lord. Regrouping by a secluded pond in Pelgaid, Jillian, Gerald and Renold were joined by Crone, an ancient magus of terrible potency who had previously been the highest ranking guardian of the now-devastated Anaxim Forest. Gerald revealed to Jillian that the three of them had known this to be a possible outcome of the battle, and that he had in fact been carrying Hazzergash’s Demon Prison on him the entire time, and had ensured that it would not fall into the demon’s hands. A new issue presented itself now, however, for while Hazzergash was the most vulnerable now he was likely to ever be, thus presenting a pristine chance to capture and reseal him, Gerald knew that he did not have much time. His ability to withstand the Withering was reaching its limit, and unless he found a way to save himself soon, he knew that his soul would be forfeit to the disease. Crone and Renold recommended seeing an acquaintance of the dragon for information on how to end the Withering, but Jillian and Gerald rejected this idea, angering Crone for their unwillingness to risk not finding what they sought. She presented them with an alternative, summoning an apparition of the Grand Master with whom they could bargain for the information they needed. The the two mages entered into a wager with the Ancient One: he would give them the information they required, but if they failed to end the Withering within two weeks, he would receive Jillian’s soul and Gerald staff, Omni. They agreed, and learned that the culprit behind the plague was in fact Kreshtaat himself, and that he was spreading it through the Spirit Realm, infecting mortals with the disease in their dreams. This also meant that they had a chance, though, for while Kreshtaat was clearly an opponent that could not be vanquished by the two of them, he would be limited to his power as a mortal as long as he occupied the Spirit Realm. If they faced him there, they had a chance. Meanwhile, the rest of Rodoria remains all but oblivious to the these people's exploits, yet events are set in motion all over the country that are both fateful and unknown to them. As they travel onwards, Nemhim City is attacked by a yet-unidentified heart-devouring monster that has single-handedly destroyed the ducal seat of the Nemhim duchy, and two days later refugees begin to arrive at Zerul City and Seclyr City, reporting that that the entire duchy of Nemhim is being annihilated by this monstrosity. Zerul City is severely undermanned, however, for many of their mages and soldiers have gone on an expedition to excavate Gazzeral ruins in Etlon, and even more of the forces of Zerul, both magi, soldiers and commanders, have gone with most of the noble families - Marcus Zerul included - to Pelgaid City to bear witness to the marriage between Frederick Pelgaid and Selene Zerul, Marcus' daughter. Although Zerul has learned much of what the Companions have discovered, they can do little to provide assistance... What will happen next... is up to you.
