The squad will be mostly military officers, maybe a few scientists and engineers. I considered a mix of environments but it didn't make sense on a planet like that. When planets form they spin on the Z axis, Earth is tilted because a massive meteorite hit it and tilted it. The reason it doesn't make sense is because when a planet is not tilted the light and heat from its star is distributed evenly and you get a planet with only one type of environment, I added jungles by making them grow around oases and added mountains so that we could have snowy terrain at high altitudes. It will be a planet of mostly sand dunes and salt flats but there will be a couple other terrain types and even an ocean covering a portion of the planet, though it would be very small compared to the oceans here on earth. While earth's oceans cover around 70% of its surface and this planet's ocean will cover maybe 5-10% of its surface.

I was going to use mechs of one kind or another, I just didn't put anything in this post because I thought it was pretty long already, I have a few ideas though. Mainly I was thinking of something similar to lost planet. There will be some military mechs but they are rare because Earth wasn't expecting to need many of them so most of the mechs the group would come across will probably be meant for construction or exploration that were jury rigged with various weapons. The scouting team that is sent to the planet will probably have a couple military mechs now that Earth knows there is a threat present and the rest will be meant for exploration and recon.
