Most likely it's a program bug. When someone edits a pos to shorten it, it reduces the amount of pages. Unfortunately the string that puts posts onto a page is seperate from the one that makes new pages, and the one doesn't tell the other when a post is shortened, so the second program keeps making pages as if all the posts were original length.
