He could have very thin grooves carved into the blade to improve poison use. Maybe dead-mans blood? 
Or how about having the thing hooked up to a battery?
Either have it isolated so the blade heats up and burns when it cuts. Or up the conductivity instead to have it shock your targets? Shocking claws?
