In order to fully take in the story potential behind firearms, you need to write more about what the user is feeling while under fire or when they're the one doing the shooting. Appropriate portrayals of modern warfare can be just as engaging, if not more so, than your run-of-the-mill fantasy story. The weapons or the world aren't what make something interesting to read; it's about how it's written.
