Not really an odd [i]one[/i] out, since sanitarium originally referred to placed dealing with long term illnesses (like tuberculosis), which is closer in meaning to sanity than the other two.

Anyway, the why is Latin stuff. They have a common root, sanus, which means healthy or sound (as in "sound of mind").
