Many of the more powerful demons would remember life before, if they have been keeping records. Their memory isn't perfect, what with the constant dying that usually goes on in the Inferno. That being said, there is a sect of demons who have isolated themselves from the inhabitants of the Inferno solely for the purpose of record keeping. While most of their records are very specialized, finding them often allows the person access to ancient knowledge. Or something. You'd be surprised how many demons of this type would cling onto meaningless things, like how to make soda.
