A relatively lithe form, Harley has an unassuming figure in the way that he carries himself and is often distant in his actions, if not overly hesitant in the way that he moves. He's got a perpetual aloof look to his face, an expression usually lost and inattentive when calm—that 'in the clouds' look, with the glazed over eyes and slight yearning that tugs at his brows. Though, he often cares more about how he looks than most would determine, even if his attitude is more unsocial than the average person; he is well kept, clean, and keeps himself as fresh as possible. Elongated features and doe brown eyes, Harley usually wears a curious expression, though riddled with lines of worry and anxiousness; his brown eyes are often wide in observation and dart around with equal parts curiosity and caution. Often regulated to a slightly unkempt hairstyle a simple hand through would fix, he's afflicted with an astigmatism that requires the use of glasses or contacts, though forgetfulness forces glasses more often than not. His voice is very quiet and muffled, though has a softness to it unlike any others with a soothing quality to the slight high intonation. Name: Harley Roald Coeman Codename: Progenitor Age: 18 Place of Birth: Stillwater, Minnesota Occupation: Student (Volunteers at the local animal shelter) Family: Joanna Loraine Coeman - Mother/Deceased Lucas Kaiden Coeman - Father/Deceased Esther Anna Coeman - Older Sister Relationship Status: Single (Homosexual) --- --- Mutant Ability: Hallucinogen Emission/Emotional Manipulation Through the emission of certain toxins or pheromones, whichever one wants to classify it, Harley can effectively manipulate a person's emotions to cause increased rage and anger, as well as reduce the need for self-preservation and can increase depression so much that an individual can literally lose their minds, to the point where they inflict extreme self harm to themselves. The effect starts upon being within the general vicinity of Harley and increases the closer an individual gets. The effects usually span from mild irritation to outright berserker rage, which is directly correlated to how much control Harley has over his power. It can also either cause a person to become unwilling to do anything but wallow in their sorrow or completely go mad from their depression, causing themselves and others around them harm. The effects can be subtle, in that Harley can direct irritation toward an individual or themselves, or blatant, in which a victim can effectively become consumed with rage and attempt to outright harm someone closest to them, including themselves. Not only that, but the hallucinogen when used as an agitator can amplify a person's strength, endurance, etc. to make them an effective combatant and increase their potential damage output; it unlocks subconscious restrictions on powers to use them to full effect. When suppressed, the power merely amplifies the strongest emotion of the people around him, but has greater and easier effect on those already angered or with temperamental issues and people prone to depression or already afflicted with chronic depression. Harley doesn't have particular control over his powers, especially when under great duress. When panicked, he can literally cause the people around him to tear at each other's throats or undergo a state of masochistic madness until he is either subdued or calmed down. He is immune to the effects of the hallucinogen and any emotion altering powers and is only as strong as the people around him, should they be susceptible to mind altering effects. The toxins are relatively hard to detect, though can be resisted with enough will power or through telepathic intervention, the latter of which has the most chance of success. When suppressed, they are still powerful enough to increase the depression of a person currently afflicted by it and can potentially dip them over the edge. The radius increases when he is panicked and loses control. Personality and History: Stories have to begin somewhere. Harley's began in Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, Minnesota to two loving parents, and one well trusted sibling. Life from then to the activation of his x-gene was, in general, average and kind of expectant from a small, middle-class family. He lived in a modest home in the suburbs, went to the largest public school, and had parents who provided well with the work they did; his father was a real estate agent and his mother worked as a doctor in Saint Paul. With an older sister, he had more than enough people to confide in when things got rough and they didn't normally get rough until he hit middle school, at about 12. It was that awful moment in just about most people's lives when he started the school year off with copious amounts of acne, large-rimmed glasses, and larger than average braces. He looked to be the easiest target to enact some prepubescent, hormone driven assertions of dominance. In other words, he was bullied. And with his sister off in college and his parents so swamped in work, he had no one left to confide in. It got particularly bad when he hit the 7th grade and had developed a particular crush on a male teacher in school, who'd showed him more sympathy than most. The kids tormented him relentlessly, calling him more words than one; unfortunately for him, this was about the time his powers began to accumulate. Under a copious amount of stress due to the physical and verbal abuse the surrounding kids were dealing, he unknowingly began emitting his toxins, causing the children to mercilessly attack him with even more force and when finally pushed past his limit, they began to turn on each other and themselves. They were ripping at each other's flesh and near bleeding out before Harley realized what he was doing and effectively stopped it by ramming himself into the nearest wall, ending it all the moment he fell unconscious. They were all sent to the hospital, in which one child died due to loss of blood and the others remained for a few months due to broken bones and severe internal bleeding. The school faculty had no idea what had happened and determined the school closed for inspection of a possible terrorist attack. Scared out of his wits, Harley didn't say a word; in fact, he was under such shock he could barely make out where he was. Unfortunately, he was back at home when his powers acted up a second time. He was tucked into bed with his parents hovering above him, attempting to garner any kind of interaction from their child. Frightened by the sudden realization that he was a mutant and the fact that he could harm his family, Harley began hyperventaliting uncontrollably, succumbing to a terrifying panic. It, in turn, caused the air to begin to cloud with his toxins, though it went unnoticed to his parents. His parents, not noticing the sudden change, forced Harley to stay in his bed in order to calm down. By then, it was too late, as the room was so thick with the hallucinogen, that they fell into a mindless haze and began attacking him and then each other. His mother quickly dispatched his father before turning on Harley. Out of a need to survive and unable to stop what was happening, Harley panicked even more, which shifted her mother's hatred to herself. The adrenaline that surged through her kept her conscious as she did herself in, ramming her head and body against the wall until she finally slumped over and died. Harley could only frantically call his sister while he watched, who came home immediately to find him huddled on the sofa talking to a police officer attempting to coax the story out of him. Their parents were long gone by then, having been taken out to the ambulance the moment Esther arrived. Rumors quickly spread that the family was unstable and it was only a matter of time before either cracked; it was unfortunate that both did, and forced their son to witness such a traumatic event. She was the only one who had learned of his mutation and the only one who knew he killed their parents. At first, it was hard to take in—she was so filled with anger and disgust that she literally locked herself inside her room for an entire week, ignoring Harley's cries and leaving him to cope on his own. But, she came to and realized that she was the only one who could safely take care of her brother. Though, he was quickly left to his own devices in his grandmother's home, somewhere in Wisconsin, whilst his sister finished her last few years of college. They both understood that only with a proper education and job could they take care of each other, so Esther made good use of her time in college, whilst Harley breezed through middle school and part of high school. More cautious and afraid of himself than anyone else, Harley was distant to practically everyone but those he trusted. He and his sister had a plan, which revolved around being able to take care of each other, but most of all themselves. They needed to be self-sufficient. Though, he felt she was more scared of him than she realized—something he merely accepted and learned to live with. Esther, however, made sure to find a way to support him in more ways than just a good job and possibly an education; she knew he couldn't live in a world where he could still hurt people and get hurt himself. Finding time outside of her busy schedule, she ventured to the newly rehabilitated Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters in order to find a way for her brother to better control himself and his powers and possibly protect himself from the prejudice of the outside world and those beyond—the world quickly forgot about the incident Harley caused in the destruction brought upon by Apocalypse's wrath. After a discussion with the newly appointed headmistress, she gathered Harley's things and made for the institute, explaining what Mrs. Pryde had told her along the way. Whether he'd need her or not, his sister saw this as the best possible opportunity and the best way for Harley to fulfill his dreams. Though, he quickly saw it as a way to get rid of him; he was volatile and dangerous, so he understood. He didn't like it, but he understood. He quickly found a place for himself, however much he distanced himself from others in the process. He didn't relate to anyone because he was even more of a danger there. Scared of himself and the potential of his own powers, Harley limited himself to aloof interactions, became adept at hiding in the background, and quickly engulfed himself in study and hard work. If he busied himself so much, people wouldn't have the chance to get close to him and he wouldn't have the chance to hurt them. Extra: —Harley has a penchant for chemistry and biology, but in particular loves veterinarian work and animal studies. He hopes to some day be able to either help form medicine through the research of exotic flora and fauna or just find a small town where he could pursue veterinarian work. —Out of all the animals, Harley loves bugs and deep sea creatures. Anything that's extremely exotic in nature, or different and unique. —Loves romantic comedies —Is keen on learning to cook, though is currently terrible at it. —Has recurring nightmares of what he caused his parents to do and is ultimately unable to forgive himself, despite his sister having done so, so quickly too. —He's got a very distinct Minnesotan accent, seeing as he's lived there most of his life. --- ---
(Please tell me if anything needs to be changed or if I should add anything else.) --- Katherine Anne Pryde Nothing but respect, if not a tad bit of intimidation. Who knew such vast intelligence could be so intimidating. However, Harley does his best to keep on her good side, if not attempt to impress her with his own studies and intelligence. If he has a chance of getting into a good college, while also controlling his powers, it's under her guidance and tutelage. Not only that, but she serves as a good role model to aspire to, and though her powers don't seem like they would a danger to others but herself, the way she can control them instills hope and confidence that he could become that proficient in using his own. Harley's not talked to her much, but due to his sister having accosted her so much to admit him and help him, he's certainly on her radar. Out of most of the candidates, Harley's ability draws a lot of concern for the well-being of both the students and faculty. If anyone has to potential to fall further than they already have, it's probably Harley. Every power has a dark side, but Harley's is blatant enough to warrant further caution. Armonia Torres Art isn't really a subject that Harley is proficient in, or has much passion in, but Armonia just has the way of talking and teaching that makes you believe in it, if that's the right phrasing. Harley can't really explain it, but he's never been more enthralled with an art class than he has when Art is teaching it—a very apropos name, he's regarded plenty. And though he doesn't often talk, Mrs. Torres is nothing but sweet to Harley, as if she kind of understands the pain he keeps locked up inside. Artwork isn't something he necessarily wants to find work in, but when he's feeling down or just out of it, which is a lot of the time, he can always look forward to expressing that through his artwork. Armonia has become somewhat of a silent confidant, in that she's given him a way to vent properly and safely and, though he's particularly shy about talking to teachers, he would love to let her know how big of a role she's played in helping him. If not to control his powers, but to properly understand himself and his feelings, and giving him an outlet for the things he's bottled up since birth. Daisy Vaughn Harley exercises regularly, but fighting isn't necessarily one of his strong points. Though, he takes Daisy's classes as seriously as possible primarily because he'll need to find a way to enhance his own skills, if he wants to survive outside of the Institute. He's a fast learner and does his best to properly study outside of class; in fact, all he has time for is studying. As well, he figures if he knows how to control and defend himself, then doing the same with his powers will come more naturally. He's got a lot of respect for Daisy, as he does all of the teachers, and her strong hearted, but sweet nature comes off as very helpful and amicable to Harley. He's not particularly close to her, but she's among the many teachers he can confide in, if he every brings himself to do so. Steve Irvine History hasn't always been a strong subject for Harley, but he does his best to keep within Steve's good graces. Of course, there's not much he can say about Steve as he purposely attempts to avoid any interaction with him; the man seems too friendly and Harley's not one to get too friendly with really anyone. There's always something about talking to authority figures, especially ones that try to relate to their students. The only thing Harley really has in common with Steve is the fact that they're both mutants, other than that, there's really no reason that Harley feels the need to talk to Steve, other than to participate in class and ask questions like a regular student. But, even that is kept to a minimum. Marlowe Faraday If there had to be a teacher that he fancied more for his looks than anything else, Harley would be ashamed to say that Mr. Faraday is that teacher. But, other than that, Harley enjoys science as a subject and does his best to preform as well as possible in and outside of class. There's something about Marlowe, however, that either brings Harley slightly jealous or inspires him, and it probably has to do with how sure Marlowe is about himself and what he's saying. There are plenty of teachers to be inspired by for the tact and control, and Mr. Faraday is one of them. And there's no other teacher he feels the need to impress and whose disappointment he fears, other than Mrs. Pryde, than Mr. Faraday. Inside of class, Harley is the perfect student and is truly interested in the subject that Mr. Faraday teaches. Outside of class, Harley has a relatively hard time approaching him for anything other than classwork, which is natural for him, but Marlowe, along with a lot of other teacher he wishes to confide in, has a set of talents that could possibly help him achieve his goals. He truly wants to end his senior year able to fully control when and where his powers activate and he intensity of such. Marlowe's combat prowess and general confidence is like one of the many lighthouses for him to work towards. Freddie DiAngelo Physical Education, despite Harley's aptitudes, has never really been a problem for him and it still isn't, to be honest. However, Freddie is probably the most intimidating of all the teachers and scares Harley the most. Like Steve, Harley does his best in class, which in P.E. isn't hard for him to accomplish, but outside of it, he often makes a fool of himself trying to avoid any contact with Mr. DiAngelo. Put Harley and Freddie in a room together and he'd probably start clawing at the door and screaming for someone to let him out. What more, Freddie should be even more volatile around Harley, due to the nature of Harley's powers, and that scares him even more. Though, even without his powers causing a mess for him, he'd probably still attempt to avoid interaction with Freddie, at all costs. --- --- Luna Marionette Due to the nature of Luna's powers, Harley has made an effort to avoid interacting with her. Not only does she lack the control of an expert, but he's in the same boat as her. Mix those two together, and you've got a gal with fully unlocked potential under an insatiable bersker rage causing mayhem and destruction wherever she pounce. To that effect, Harley doesn't know Luna too well and doesn't try to. As such, he can come off as a little too cold and distant, as if he has an actual problem with her. Though, if asked he is more likely to tell her the reasons in person, rather than lie about it. But, that opportunity has not presented itself and he's not found the right moment to right any small rumors going around about how he feels about her. Most of all, he fears that the whole avoidance thing is going to blow up in his face and when it does, he only hopes there are people around to stop that from happening. Duncan Spencer Both are rather distant, though Duncan is of the colder variety, but if there's anyone who could still be affected by his powers and go relatively unharmed, it'd probably be Duncan. That and he'd probably not really care about what just happened to him for the last 30 or so minutes. But, their personalities are relatively alike, which means they don't really find the necessity to talk to each other. Though, Harley can safely say that the two are on good terms—Harley likes to think he's on good terms with everyone. Duncan's also not that bad to look at and he's relatively isolated enough to get a good view. Of course, why would Harley admit anything like that. Any relationship that ever forms between them would probably be very platonic, but that doesn't mean attraction is totally out of the window. Right? Harley's not very experienced when it comes to the touchy feely aspects of relationships, much less relationships in general. River Hunnigan Well, there's not much to say about Harley and River's relationship because there really isn't anything aside from the odd hellos down the halls. There's an obvious troublemaker vibe coming off of River that Harley would really want no part in, but that doesn't mean anything in terms of interacting with him. It just means he's most likely to say no to any offers of graffiti or smoking a joint or causing mayhem around the town. They don't have much to relate on, so Harley doesn't push any further than just be a polite acquaintance, like he does with most people. He likes River, he likes everyone, but he doesn't like socializing outside of his comfort zone, so if anyone had to initiate conversation, it'd probably be River. Naka Vejay Currently doesn't know who Naka is. Alicia Taylor Luckily, Alicia's powers don't affect other mutants... that would be rather bad if she had take control of Harley through some unfortunate mishap. That would be pretty bad for everyone, actually. There would be no tell what she would effectively cause them. He, however, makes sure to keep her distance when they talk; his powers have been known to further enhance other mutants and who knows how far Alicia's powers could go. But, she's social and friendly and he does his best to keep up with her when she approaches him. Other than that, he's not a fan of talking and often wishes their conversations would go by a little quicker, not out of some underlying misanthropic hate, but more out of just being outside of his comfort zone for too long. They're decent relationship wise, but Alicia probably understands that Harley has his limits when it comes to other people. Oona Fredrick Oona's clingy nature is very, very off-putting to Harley, so he does his best to draw a line between them in order to keep her from getting a little too close for Harley's comfort. She's a nice gal and all, but clingy and Harley just don't mix... like, ever. His often quietness can come off as cold, so that helps to draw a bit of distance between them. He'd love to keep their relationship at relatively close-ish acquaintances, if that's even possible Alucard De Vinci Yeah, when confidence kind of goes over the line, it comes off as arrogance and Harley's not a fan of people who are too sure of their abilities. If they know where they're going in life, what they're capable of, but also respects those around them, then that's a good balance of confident, but still humble. Something about Alucard just rubs Harley the wrong way, whether it's the fact that he's pretty much a walking vampire or his deluded sense of righteousness, he doesn't quite know. There's way too much grey in the world to force oneself to look at things from a black and white perspective. So, Harley does the minimal amount of interaction when Alucard comes into the picture, and he's pretty adept at not socializing with people if he doesn't want to. Not only that but his powers don't quite mix well with insatiable blood lust. Harley Coeman Ooh, there's no one he dislikes more than himself. Sad to say, but if there were anyone he'd want to be, it'd be anything but who he is now. Harley himself treads a very thin line and can honestly go either way with the proper (or improper) nudge and he knows it. That's what scares him. He could control his powers and become something he could only dream of, or he could let it overwhelm him and be the thing he's worked so hard against. --- --- Daniel Green They have a few things in common, though Harley isn't necessarily timid—at least that's not what he thinks he is. Danny kind of encompasses all there is to love about nature, though all of nature is a bit much for Harley. He'd rather find a good balance and does so with bugs and animals, in general. They don't talk much, but when they do it's usually about the subjects and things they have in common and it's really one of the only types of conversations he appreciates. There's not really many people in the building that share his fascination with animals, much less the insects or arachnids that he fancies. But, Danny's just a kind of friend, just like everyone else to him. If he had a choice between talking to Danny and spending time alone in his room, he'd almost always pick the room. But some people are little harder to subtly push away than others. Jade Green They both work at the animal shelter and they're both pretty scared of their powers. Of course, anything beyond having class and working together could possibly spiral down into a lot of terrible things. Of course, in the institute, they have plenty of people there who could contain the situation, but outside of that sanctuary, there's not much to stop any mayhem that could ensue. So, Harley doesn't associate with her unless it's absolutely necessary. He doesn't know her that well and the same goes for her, but she seems nice, if not a little scared of herself. But, in order to help someone else, he must first help himself... and there is a lot of help that he needs to do in order to even be considered remotely safe. Aurora Claudwell Harley likes Aurora, but like everyone else, he does his best to keep the distance fairly open and rather far. He doesn't know much about her, but from observations she seems to hold a lot of weight on her shoulders, though she seems to get relatively lighter every passing day. It's nice to compare when he first met her to how he sees her now, but her spontaneity and how close she tends to get to others is off-putting to Harley, for the same reason he gives for distancing himself to everyone. Though, when she does get close enough to him, he enjoys her wild spirit and her smile can be infectious, even if he's not willingly participating in the interactions. They friends, but not close enough for Harley to be concerned. Adrien Timoshenko Adrien is a nice fellow, but is too close to him for his general comfort. What he could do with all that stuff pent up inside him, should he ever lose control of himself. But, Harley doesn't necessarily know how much his powers affect Adrien, though he wouldn't like to test any of his theories. He likes to keep Adrien thinking that they're pretty close friends, but in reality, Harley often finds himself purposefully drifting away from him whenever he gets the chance. Luckily, he usually forces himself to get swamped with schoolwork, not short of asking teachers for extra assignments, so it gives him the proper excuse to avoid Adrien without really raising any suspicions. He's a nice guy though, and he appreciates his effort, but Harley's much too used to being alone and is far from allowing himself to potentially put others in danger, regardless of whether or not Adrien is immune to his powers. Elena Elwyn Harley doesn't know Elena all that well (Not sure if she's new or not.) Flavie Lefèvre Due to Flavie being a new arrival, Harley hasn't gotten a good opinion of her yet. Morena Silicus (Don't know if she's new or not either, but will gladly change to add any thoughts, etc.) ---
