I believe that the Dwemer, using the Heart of Lorikhan, ascended from the mortal plane and departed Nirn to wander the stars. I hope we never see them again, they are gone, but their legacy remains.
That is a possibility...
Did you forget that Alduin was the Eater of Worlds and that Dwemer were Tamriel's equivalent of Dwarves? It might have taken some time, but Alduin could have easily destroyed the world if the Dwemer were still around, sending their automatons at it and also blocking the path for the Dovahkin. As we've seen in the games the Automatons attack without discretion, and I severely doubt the Dwemer would program them to not kill the previously faceless Dragonborn when approached. It's basically a 'stall the only thing that can kill it while trying to kill it' situation.
Not really.. The nordic belief system is rather barbaric/Celtic so I would take most of what their beliefs say with a grain of salt. Their belief was that Alduin was Akatosh himself (when even Alduin called himself the first born of akatosh) and that Alduin completely destroyed the world before to start a new one (the current world of Nirn)... So While I'll agree that the Dragonborn was the only known being that was able to defeat alduin at the time (with the help of the other spirits of the most heavy duty dragonslayers of their time, all of which previously fought Alduin before and "banished" him) I can honestly say I disagree. The Dragons were yes, almost as powerful as the deadra themselves but the dwemer were a major threat to them as well and they have been gone for quite a long time as were they hitting major technological advances in record times with overly advanced technologies. If they were able to continue their creations and if they never disappeared, I think that even Alduin and the deadra would have some struggles against them. Though if Blitz's theory is true as well, We'll probably NEVER see them and they probably learned to even surpass the gods of Nirn or would hold equal power to them.
