Equestria exists some distance away from a Mass Relay, and the princesses are "aware" of space but do not see a reason to explore it. And they are unaware of the relay connecting to other systems and the galaxy as a whole, thus the beginning can be introducing Equestria to the galaxy at large (whether against interference protocols or not) So yeah, now we need a conflict I guess.

MAGIC! not eezo powered, but a new type of energy source, or perhaps a new form of manipulating an already present yet unknown energy source [the whole, you've already got the power but don't know how to use it' thing XD... maybe], the excessive use of baysplosions powah from the finale could perhaps be detected by staff on the Relay in that system [they need staff due to being 'new/manmade' relays, and not hardly as 'perfect' as the originals], naturally word would get out, investigations could be setup, and of course, more 'behind the scenes' missions may be taking place =D

I.e. while your spectre is arriving to investigate, there may some form of 'black market harvesting' operation going on somewhere else... i smell all kinds of potential conflict popping up XD or possibilities exist too of course.
