House Tyrell of Highgarden Growing Strong Important Figures [*]Leos Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden, Defender of the Marches, High Marshal of the Reach, and Warden of the South. "The Mad Lord." Whether the current Lord of Highgarden is an eccentric genius or just insane is a question of considerable debate across the courts of Westeros. Everyone agrees, however, that nobody throws a better party- his masquerades are famous from King's Landing to Pentos. Everyone also agrees that crossing him is a mistake. (Flagg)[/*]
“A most disturbing young man.” - Lord Redwyne, describing his son-in-law and liege lord “A snake in mummer’s guise.” - Bloodraven to Daeron the Good, after meeting Lord Leos The late lord Vyman Tyrell was a broadminded and thoroughly unconventional man, and sent his teenage son Leos on a tour of the Free Cities when the lad reached his seventeenth year. “A breadth of experience” Vyman had told his only trueborn son, “is vital to ruling well." Young Leos was a scholarly boy, artistic in inclination and mercurial in temperament, and he welcomed the chance to see the glories of the Old World first hand. Accompanied by his half-brother, Domeric, fifteen years his senior, he set off for Essos on an odyssey that would last more than half a decade. His exploits, and the chaos that followed in his wake all the way to Qarth, are the stuff of quite a few wild legends and rumors in the Reach. Among other dubious tales, it is said that he drank the wine of wizards and entered the House of the Undying, that he fought in the slave pits of Astapor on a wager, that he bedded the Archon of Tyrosh, argued theology with a high priest of R’hllor in the temple at Volantis, and made a pact with demons in a sorcerous cabal in Myr. That most of these stories are untrue is without a doubt: Lord Leos is known neither for his honesty nor for the clarity of his expression, and the real story of his time in Essos remains obscure. It is said he wished to look upon the Doom, and only relented from this mad quest when news reached him that his father was ill. He returned to the Reach at twenty four. The moody youth his lord father had seen off at the docks of Oldtown years before was now a manic, babbling young man with wild eyes and a wilder smile. He sat as his dying father’s beside, telling rambling tales about slaying dragons, flying horses and visions of the Seven. He wondered aloud if the bones of Garth the Gardener could be fashioned into a suit of armor. When his father expired, Leos’ exclaimed to the room full of mourners “For the best really, he had gotten rather tedious in his dotage, hadn’t he?” He then announced he would marry, and that Lord Redwyne- present at his father’s deathbed- really ought to introduce him to his charming daughter. Cassilda Redwyne and Leos Tyrell were married shortly after Leos assumed the throne of Highgarden, and were in many ways a perfect match- both intelligent, fond of narcotics and alcohol, comfortable with adultery, and thoroughly disinterested with the staid chivalric codes that governs noble life in the Reach. Their court quickly became notorious for its untraditional, even bizarre, atmosphere: lavish masquerades and outrageous scandals were commonplace, and for the artistic and intellectual life that flourished there. Leos gained a reputation as a lordling indifferent to politics, preferring painting, poetry, and sneaking out of the castle to drink with the peasantry for days to the mundane tasks of managing the Reach. Administrative duties increasingly fell into the capable hands of the Court Maester, Mazaryn, who is widely viewed as the power behind the throne at Highgarden- though some perceptive politicos, including Bloodraven, think there is more to Lord Leos than meets the eye. In the Blackfyre Rebellion, Leos sided with the loyalists but remained outwardly aloof from the prosecution of the war, sending his half-brother Domeric to lead Tyrell forces. At one of the few councils of war he attended, he infamously suggested that no king with the moniker “the Good” could hope to compete in popularity with men named Bittersteel and Blackfyre, and proposed that his Grace take the name Goremonger or Fleshreaver or “something else less terribly boring, your royal goodliness.” After the defeat of the pretenders, Leos has moved to rid the Reach of those who remained neutral or sided with the Blackfyres, and the efficacy and ruthlessness with which his insubordinate bannermen have been humiliated (or killed) is taken as evidence by some that there is steel beneath Leos’ frivolous and eccentric façade. She is beautiful, brilliant and infamous for debauchery. (Flagg)[/*] [*]Maester Mazaryn. "The Grey Lord" Lord Leos’ adviser and right hand. He wields considerable, if informal, authority in the Reach as the envoy and agent of Lord Leos. Many suspect he is the power behind the throne of Highgarden (Flagg)[/*] [*]Ser Domeric Flowers. Master-at-Arms of Highgarden. Bastard brother of Lord Leos. He is cunning, utterly ruthless, and possessed of magnificent mustaches.
