Citizens of Farmer Hill
[52 | Johnathon Eric Reid | Male]
Description: A relatively known person in Farmer Hill because of how active he is in the community. An older man with slick red hair and a bushy beard usually dresses practically and is in great shape despite his age. John Reid was a farmer since the very day he was born, and he'll die that way he says - but he also says that he'll die happy. Farmer Hill is a community that he grew up in and wants it to be the best it could be, which was why he was always helping people try to build a better community for everyone there. Which is difficult because most are stagnant, and wish to keep it that way. He has a daughter, and a young son, after the strange disappearance of his wife. Though, there are many rumors about John Reid and the secrets he held... He was found dead after the massacre in the camp, murdered by a blade laced with an allergen.
Extra-Normal Ability: N/A.
[20 | Sharon Emily Reid | Female]
Description: Sharon is the sole daughter of John Reid and the last family member they had left after her mother inexplicably disappeared. She takes a lot after her father as she quite the tomboy with her red hair in a low-cut pony-tail, and usually wears overalls of some kind. She's thin, but a little curvy, and has earned the attention of a few boys due to her looks. Sharon isn't exactly all that well-known or liked. She's relatively reclusive and has a rather nasty reputation for strange and rather upsetting mood swings. She's known for blowing her gasket at even the slightest upsetting thing, and thus, doesn't have too many friends. However, despite this, she's still a very caring and compassionate person, that wants the best for everyone. Though, she possesses a variety of secrets of her own.
Extra-Normal Ability: Sharon has the ability to overpower and control all Arthropods within a few miles of her. Essentially enthralling her so that they listen to every command she makes. She's capable of controlling an insane amount of Arthropods at a time, so she could literally control a swarm.
[18 | Zoey Casey Gray | Female]
Description: The rockin' DJ all-star of Farmer Hill, and one of the closet friends to Claire O'Sullivan. A girl that is as well known by her rather joyful demeanor as her height. Zoey is a girl that thinks that people make the world a better place with just a smile, and so she's smiling. She looks punk or alternative with her head of long flowing black hair that has strands of a cyan color, and her pale white skin that contrasts pretty well against each other. She usually dresses pretty well and matches her friend Claire. A student of Grand Ridge, but after the incident at the campsite, she has been comatose.
Extra-Normal Ability: N/A.
[42| Kenneth Ward | Male]
Description: A face unknown to most of the younger residents of Farmer's Hill, Kenny Ward was a native of the town who later on in life would go on to become the successful owner of KW&Co Haulage with contacts dotted around the North-West US. A stocky man with clean-shaven sandy blonde hair and blue eyes, he carries a distinct appearance for those who know him - through these days around town that's few and far between, with most of his time spent on the move.
Extra-Normal Ability: Wealth?
[39| Vivian Ward Taylor | Female]
Description: In contrast to her elder brother, Vivian holds a wiry figure at just over five feet tall, her sandy blonde hair and blue eyes the only distinct characteristics that she shares with him. Also a native of the town, Vivian spent her younger years working for various reputable companies on the Pacific Coast until she met and married an LAPD officer and now administers the Farmer's Hill depot for KW&Co Haulage on her brother's behalf. Despite her less than imposing appearance, she's shown herself to be a competent administrator and has managed to keep the family business in good order since taking on the mantle.
Extra-Normal Ability: None.
Authority of Farmer Hill
[48 | Stephen Howard Reese | Male]
Description: Sheriff Reese was the sheriff of Farmer Hill long as the people could remember. Whenever there is danger in the Williamsboro township, Sheriff Reese is the first person there. He's a fairly tall man at six-four and is in pretty good shape for his age. Though he looks a bit older due to stress - his hair is already greying! Everyone in Farmer Hill knows about him due to his presence in the town, and he's almost never seen out of uniform unless he's at home. He's a stern man, one that's strict on the people of Farmer Hill. As to him, it's the only way to keep them in line. He's a single father after the death of his wife of their only son, and he lives in Mason Square on what's left of his father's ranch.
Extra-Normal Ability: N/A.
[37 | Quentin Taylor | Male]
Description: A 5'11 African American of heavyset build, wearing a close-cropped beard and his hair equally short. Quentin spent his younger years as an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, until at his wife's request, he moved with her from the buzzing environment of the city to a new, calmer (and better paying) life in Farmer's Hill, taking up a new position with the local Sheriff's Department to fa ill the void left behind from his beat cop days. He's a man hardened both by personal and professional experiences in the past, but it's typically kept hidden behind a friendly, relaxed demeanor - though one can tell from a glance that he's dedicated to his work to a fault, much to his wife's chagrin.
Extra-Normal Ability: None.
[Ageless | Unknown | Seems to be feminine]
Description: The Child is the ambiguous being watching over the Awakened and has been helping them. They have a Godly appearance, being made out of bright white light, and having the general shape and appearance of a child female. Being around four feet with a massive glowing ponytail, and round, youthful features. The being warned the group about the Glutton and told them about the nature of the universe at large. The Child belongs to a race of being known as the Primordials, a race of godly beings with immense power. However the Child is young and is nowhere near as possible as the rest of their kind - and they are trapped between realms - so they cannot do much to protect the Awakened. However, they are dedicated to stopping the Glutton.
Extra-Normal Ability: The Child is apart of the race known as the primorials and is capable of Godly feats such as untapped reality warping if they weren't so young that they couldn't utilize their true power. What's more, is that the Child is trapped between the realms and is unable to exert their power in the universe for more than a short amount of time. If they could, perhaps the Glutton wouldn't be a threat. So far the Child has exhibited teleportation abilities and showing the groups visions.
[Eons Old | It's true name is a mystery, everyone refers to it as the Glutton | Above concepts such as gender]
Description: The central antagonist of the story.
The Glutton is an ancient God-like being that was imprisoned within the mountain for centuries, upon the death of John Reid it became active yet again. It's unknown exactly what it is, how it got there, and why it does what it does - but its goal seems to be killing the Awakened across town. The Glutton made it's first move empowering and enthralling Scott Reese, then personally killing the group. It doesn't seem to have any consistent form, it takes the form of an orange light that hides an incomprehensible black mass underneath it. The God-Child warns that the Glutton will wipe out all life in Farmer Hill.
Extra-Normal Ability: The Glutton is, without a doubt, the most powerful being in Farmer Hill, it has an assort of different abilities. It's primary ability is that it feeds off emotions in it's area and grows more powerful by the minute because of it. It has demonstrated the ability to consume anything that it has come in contact with, materalize parts of itself, dominate and corrupt minds, and give people abilities - however, it likely has far more abilities.
[N/A | Is above such concepts | Genderless]
Description: The Speaker is an ambitious underling of the Glutton and is ambiguous as they come. The Speaker takes the appearance of a young, Caucasian, child with a completely shaved head. It's near impossible to tell what their gender is, as their face could go either way, they are bald-headed and wear white dresses (sometimes robes). Their voice is completely androgynous as well, but what's not ambiguous is their devotion to the Glutton. They are completely subservient to the Glutton and have given their all to the cause of breaking it free. However, despite the Awakened being their opposition; they seem to want the Awakened on their side for some unknown reason.
Extra-Normal Ability: Unknown. The Speaker seems to have a teleportation ability, and possibly an illusionist ability.
[N/A | The Hound | Uses Male Pronouns]
Description: The Hound takes the appearance of a massive, wolf-like, being that is made out of a black smoke. He has bright, shining, red eyes, and is always accompanied by a black fog. It's hard to say what size he is because he's always constantly changing size. It's unknown what he is, or what he wants, but he seems to visit those in dreams, warning them that he's going to come after them if they don't come willingly. Naming himself an agent of death, he comes after those who he says "cheated death," and promises to set things right. He doesn't seem to exist outside dreams, but there are stories of those going into the woods and seeing a giant black wolf. A wolf that leads them to a dead body... or some interpret it as a portent of death.
Extra-Normal Ability: Unknown, he may not even exist outside of dreams.
Britney definitely has a bit of size to her body. From the fact that she's abnormally tall - both her mom and dad were huge in terms of height - to her sheer body mass. In fact, her sheer height is the first thing that people notice about her. Something that she's insecure about, very insecure about. Since not too many boys appreciate that she's far taller than them. That's just something that she lives with. The other aspect that makes her look big is her body shape. She has a bit of an oval body-shape that is mostly shaped by extra body fat that she just can't seem to shake off. Though, that body fat compliments her. It makes her very curvy. That was the result of puberty being very kind to Britney. Her behind's size has always been the butt of jokes among friends, and she's definitely chesty (at 44F). She is definitely a woman. Though, because of her body shape, people also get the impression that she is fat. While she is a bit heavier than other girls, she is definitely not obese.
She has an air of confidence around her, the kind of confidence that she owns the world, and that nothing can touch her. Almost like she is noble. She takes large steps and has a big smile on her face at all times. That nobility vibe comes in the way she dresses - she wears quite expensive and fancy looking clothing. The kind of attire that gives away that she comes from Farmer Hill's upper class. If that confidence fades for whatever reason, something is very wrong. Though her tone of voice is quite pleasant (albeit condescending at times), she seems to circumvent that aura by being quite kind and passionate, and happy.
Another thing that makes Britney stick out in a crowd (at least in Farmer Hill) is her skin color. She's African-American and has a bunch of different African nations flowing through her blood. She's primarily Sierra-Leonean and Nigerian, but she is distantly Ethiopian, Sudanese, and she even has a bit of Egypt in her. Which gave her her curly brown hair that's well maintained, her facial features, and skull shape. Her face is pretty round, mostly because of her big rosy cheeks, and her dull jawline. Which gives her a bit of a baby-face. She has a large nose with a wide bridge and fairly large nostrils. Crescent-shaped ears that are pierced, usually with large earrings or jewelry. She has thick lips and a slightly wide mouth that, when she smiles, exposes her very shiny teeth. Her eyes are almond shaped, and a light-brown color.
"I... should have done better."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Britney's goal is to stop the Glutton, and all other threats to Farmer Hill.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Britney believes the only way to get what you want in life is through hard work and dedication. Basically, to succeed in life, all you need is a clear vision and a little bit of dedication. She believes that the people that "failed" at life just weren't passionate enough, and are hardly worthy of her time. In addition, she believes that money doesn't necessarily equate status. To her, it's a tool, a means to an end. Just because she's wealthy, doesn't mean she's any more or less special than anyone else.
SECRETS ⫻ Britney has a lot of knowledge on how the town functions, and the things that lurk in the shadows. She's reluctant to tell, but she has no choice but to share those secrets.
DESIRES ⫻ Britney desires independence more than anything else. To be seen as her own person. She hates the fact that she's only known as a wealthy man's daughter, and wishes to step out of that shadow the best she can. She wants to forge her own identity for herself. She also desires companionship in the people around her, and find people who think like her. No matter of their wealth. Also to grow her garden to be the largest and most luxurious in all Farmer Hill.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Britney is bisexual, leaning heavily on girls. She discovered this trait during a close encounter with her friend, Claire. She knew that people wouldn't reflect too kindly upon the revelation. So to keep it a secret, she's willing to date a boy or two as a cover to keep people off her while she dates her real sweetheart.
FEARS ⫻ Britney fears the Glutton, and what it'll do to the world if it escapes. Which is why she went to such lengths to figure out a way to stop it.
REPUTATION ⫻ Britney's reputation is a mixed bag. There are not too many people who don't know who Britney Williams is. All because her family has a heavy hand in the politics of Farmer Hill.. and also have screwed over more than a few families, and left them homeless. That already gave her a bad start reputation-wise. On a more personal level, Britney's reputation is poor a lot of people due to her attitudes, and whatnot. She is known for being a rich bitch and quite snooty at times. Very standoffish.
PET PEEVES ⫻ Britney has a bit of respect for rules, and order. She can't stand people who can't take things seriously, or just have to buck the system for no reason. She also hates people who are unable to take responsibility for their actions and would turn her nose up at those people at the drop of a hat.
QUIRKS ⫻ Britney has a habit of singing to herself when bored, or busy with work. Expect to hear her sing a song or two during times of silence. Another weird thing she does is her little love of nudity. When no one is around, she likes to strip herself of clothing and simply walk around. Usually done in private, but sometimes she is a bit more adventurous with skinny dipping, and nude morning walks.
"Everything I've told you, it's all been a lie...."
While Britney herself is a native of Farmer Hill, her ancestors were not. It started all the way back before Britney's father was even born. Her grandfather was a very wealthy man that seemingly appeared out of the blue (Actually from Philadelphia) and landed in Farmer Hill. Starting a series of successful businesses in Farmer Hill, and quickly and aggressively snatching power and businesses from the natives of Farmer Hill - forcing some out of jobs. It was a sight to see one man gain so much power in a short amount of time, and it was even more pride hurting for the racist members of the community that a lot of the businesses are owned by a black man. Which escalated the Williams family to a higher status within the small town.
This legacy/empire continues to modern day when the Williams family still have a strong foothold in Farmer Hill's community. Britney was born as the first daughter of her father's new generation, and three siblings followed. While daddy worked hard in the offices keeping the businesses afloat, Britney lived the high life. She had everything that the city had to offer at her disposal, and she used it. From going to expensive schools out of town to buying expensive clothes to going on luxurious vacations abroad! She was living the life that people could only dream of.
Though, Britney's life was a truly lonely one. She really didn't have anyone other than herself, and her extended family. No real friendship. Exploring the US and the luxurious vacations didn't seem all that great when she went home to nobody. She felt that nobody cared. To help her end her loneliness (or at least distract herself from it) she picked up hobbies. The one that she grew to love the most is gardening. She didn't know what drew her to the hobby, but she loves doing it more than anything else. Nothing excites her more than going out and forging her garden into something special. The garden in the back of the William estate was created by her.
Britney's philosophy was heavily shaped by her mother. She did her best to keep Britney realistic and remind her that she is one piece of a greater world. One beyond Farmer Hill. As she grew up, she tried to carefully examine her mother's words, as she began to self-examine. She went out to Farmer Hill and tried to make friends with the other people her age. Some rejected her, in time, she began to make friends with the other girls her age. That put the idea in her head that she could do anything if she put her mind to it. She brought loneliness to an end, so she could bring anything to an end.
Her father learned of her activities and brought an end to it. That did nothing to prevent Britney from going out and having fun with her friends. The last thing she wanted to be was cooped up inside some shitty mansion all day, so she went out and had fun. She met a variety of people she is friends with to this very day. One of her closest friends was one of the town troublemakers, Claire O'Sullivan, and they were practically inseparable. Though, they both discovered something about themselves skinny dipping one night that got rather heated. Sharing a kiss, the two realized their affections for each other. Britney didn't know how to come to terms with it but kept it a secret. This lead to her relationship with her friend becoming a bit awkward, and eventually, they drifted apart.
Once Britney came of age and graduated high school, she chose to attend Grand Ridge Academy to master in Business and Administration. Because she realized that the hatred of her father, and her self-loathing, will never end unless she becomes her own person. She participated in the camping trip that changed everyone's lives; taking the role of a leader in the situation and attempted to lead the escape from the island. Afterwards, she attempted to gather the Awaken and lead them on a mission to figure out just happened to John Reid and solve what was going on. Even though hiding something from the group and there was a great deal of distrust, she took the role of the leader of the "Support Group." Though, she ultimately buckled during the first contact with the Glutton and her best friend got killed.
She blames herself for the death of Claire.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"World class gardener right here."
Gardening ⫻ Britney is an expert gardener. From when she was young, she learned how to garden, and the ins and outs of all plant life. This botany knowledge allows her to identify plants and knows different ways to apply those plants.
Ballet ⫻ Britney was a ballet dancer for as long as she remembers. This lead to Britney being very flexible, and having tons of balance.
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Chloromancy, the ability to channel the force inherent to all Awaken to manipulate plants, and communicate with them.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Spawning from her inherent joy, and love of gardening, Britney gained a connection with plants unlike no other. She has to ability to channel the force shared between all Awakened into the areas around her to create and manipulate plant life.
In it's rawest form, she can spawn a wheat colored energy that appears like a floating light anywhere around her with a mere thought, and move this energy around. This energy appears like a spectral force, and from this force, Britney can create any kind of plant life. Seemingly growing it from the light like a source. From this ability, she can create vines, to trees, to bushes, practically anything plant-based that is limited by her knowledge of the plant. The only issue is that it takes time for Britney to grow the plant. She can't instantly make a tree appear, of course, but she can quickly make vines appear to attack people with. Now let me note, she doesn't need soil or the sort, she can create it anywhere in a three-meter radius (doesn't mean they'll survive long, but yeah). Oh, I should mention that the Blind cannot see this energy, but they can see its effects.
This energy she can manipulate can also infuse plant life. For starters, it can cause them to grow even more (much faster and more efficiently than creating it from nothing), she can manipulate existing plants, and repair damage plants (possibly reviving plants, removing toxins and diseases, and more). As a side ability, this energy allows Britney to telekinetically manipulate certain plants on a much wider radius. From up to ten meters away, she can telekinetically move things like leaves, fruit, pieces of plant matter, etc. Long as it's less than two pounds, she can lift it - but she is capable of living several things at a time, long as she doesn't lift more than thirty pounds. When she uses her ability, it's accompanied by a wind, nothing drastic. Giving the idea that the wind is doing all the work.
Britney is psychically/mentally connected to all plant life around her in a forty-meter radius. She mentally knows where plants are in the area, which part of their life cycle they're in, what kind of plant they are, and what they sense. You see, to an extent, plants can feel, see, smell, and taste (There's also a theory that they can hear, but eh). Well, it's mostly limited to other plants or certain parts of nature. By kneeling down, placing her hand down, and concentrating, she can scry through plants in a way. She can sense the auras of those standing in/touching plant life anywhere within her forty-meter range. However, it depends on how dense the plant life in the area is. If the person is only touching a plant, she can vaguely sense them, but if they're standing in the middle of a forest, she'll be able to see them clearly. She can only focus on one location at a time and a very small radius. The moment she stops focusing, however, she'll lose the ability to see their auras. Sometimes Britney wonders if she can communicate. With plants. Part of her wonders if she's crazy.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ Britney's abstraction grows a bit in power, and allows her to create plant life in a ten-meter radius, and create it much faster. She can potentially cause a tree to sprout near instantly if she wills it hard enough, and can create a wreath of vines near instantly. In addition, her plant empathy will expand to all plant life within Farmer Hill. Basically giving her unlimited sight. Her ability to telekinetically manipulate plants expands to twenty meters, and she can lift a hundred pounds.
LIMITS ⫻ Britney can only create plantlife in a very limited range, and even in the presence of the mountain, it isn't exactly far. Britney's plant manipulation, whilst it doesn't need soil to enhance or grow plant life, she has a far easier time if it's there. It takes far more time and energy to create plant life on non-soils, and the plant life will die very quickly. In order to control plants, Britney needs to be connected to the earth in a way. The closer she is to the soil, the stronger her ability to control plants gets. So, if she's on the second floor of a building, it'd be harder to use her power than if she was on the ground-level.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Britney's plants are as vulnerable as any other plants. They can easily be killed by fire/heat, ice/cold, poison, and they also still require water and other means to stay alive. Britney cannot create plant life from anything - even if it seems like she does. She donates a bit of her lifeforce in order to create her plants. As she uses her power, she runs a little low on lifeforce and becomes physically weaker as she uses her abstraction. She can possibly kill herself if she uses her power too much.
"No more secrets, I promise."
Britney's extended family visit town on a semi-regular basis, mostly her uncle's family. Which includes the cousin that she was the closest with, Cindy Whitehouse.
"I want revenge, for everyone that fell to that thing."
Justin has a cool, confident, presence around him. Despite not being the most intimidating person around, Justin still has the look of a warrior in his eyes. Being raised in such a family tends to do that for you. He stands a little taller than what you'd expect an Asian male to stand at almost five-ten. He would be shorter, but his maternal family is tall (Like freakishly, his late grandmother was six-two). That makes Justin stand out compared to other Asian males. Though, he doesn't exactly have a super high body mass, at least compared to westerners. He carries himself with an assload of confidence. Keeping his hands in his pockets as he takes large steps. Usually being the loud, life of the party. Though, he doesn't speak with an Asian accent, since he's essentially American by all definitions except ethnicity. The only accent he has is a "big-city" accent riff with slang and attitude. You can say that Justin is very energetic, however.
Justin is pretty thin, thanks to a lightning fast metabolism, and the fact that he does a bit of work. His mother didn't want a lazy slob of a son that sits around playing video games, so she made sure that Justin went outside. Justin does martial arts, but he did more skating than anything. He has a bit of a muscle-layer developing because he's been working on getting rather buff. His legs are very strong from running, but his arms are getting there. He's also been working on some abs. Though he's still fairly lanky, and the only way to notice his muscle definition is for him to get naked (or close to it).
His skin tone is an off-white color with golden overtones. Justin is a mixture of Chinese (maternally), and Taiwanese (Paternally). He takes a lot more after his father than his mother, but he still has a little bit of his mother in him. With a strong jaw and a bulky chin, that seamlessly smooths the rest of his face. His lips are pointed, and a little thick, but are hardly disproportionate compared to his rather large nose. With a thick bridge, nostrils, and it is rounded at the tip. His eyes are slanted, and very pointed, but he always seems to give off an approachable, and adventurous look on his face.
"I know times are tough but if we turn on each other that's what that thing wants."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Justin realizes that, in the bigger picture, the Glutton is the threat here. He wants to solve his grandmother's murder, but if the Glutton ends the world that'd be pretty hard. Then, he wants to get his fucking master's degree.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Justin, primarily, lives under the mantra of nothing ventured, nothing gained. It was mainly taught to him by his mother, and he believes that you can't ever accomplish anything without taking a risk or two. Whether it's taking risks with women or money - you can't ever expect anything out of life without putting something in. Secondarily, Justin learned from his grandmother that he can learn from other people more than anyone, and seeks to learn as much about other people as possible. Even from the people he dislikes. In addition, he believes the heart is stronger than the mind, so he's more inclined to listen to that than his heart.
SECRETS ⫻ Justin is secretly questioning his sexual orientation; he feels a growing attraction to men. He fears the backlash that he may receive from his family - especially with the death of his rather traditional grandmother still on their minds.
DESIRES ⫻ Justin wants to learn about other people, and himself, so he can be the best person he can possibly be.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Justin likes to project an outward attraction to the female gender when in actuality, he's developed an attraction to males. He keeps this a secret as he tries to work out everything.
FEARS ⫻ Justin fears to miss all the right opportunities in life because he took a moment to think when he should be acting. He also fears what killed his grandmother may also be coming after him.
REPUTATION ⫻ Among the more traditional members of the Farmer Hill community; he is irrelevant - he is mostly known for being the late Lihua Zhao's grandson - but he has a much better reputation in Farmer Hill for his active role in helping people.
PET PEEVES ⫻ There's not a whole lot that annoys Justin because he rarely cares about such small things.
QUIRKS ⫻ Justin's intelligence is often brought under question because he's, at times, very short-sighted, and doesn't think things through. The problem roots in the fact that actions come better to Justin than thought, so he has a habit of jumping the gun. The other problem is that Justin is blunt about his feelings and generally acts on them, even if they are bad ideas. So that goes without saying.
"If the Glutton is responsible for her death, then I'll just have another reason to burn him."
To make a long story short: Justin's mother, Meifeng Zhao, and his aunt, Lijuan, moved to America from China because of her mother's (Lihua Zhao) dissatisfaction with China. They moved to a Californian metropolis known as Los Angeles, where they had a variety of different adventures. Meifeng grew up into a strong confident woman who went into college for a master's degree in criminal justice where she met her future sweetheart Pai-Han Liao. After a few years of romancing each other, they got married, and Meifeng became pregnant with twins. Justin and Katelyn Liao, two siblings that would pave the way for the bloodline's future.
Justin's early life didn't have much of note, Meifeng was at home raising them while his father was making the money for them to live comfortably. This built up a deep innate connection between the twins and their mother, who imparted many of her ideas and philosophy upon the twins - though she was unhappy with staying home by herself. Their grandmother, Lihua, stepped in and offered to take some of the workloads off Meifeng so she could pursue a career in the CIA. Their dual-earner family is what really earned them a lot of money, and in turn, helped them live comfortably in Los Angeles.
Though the absence of his mother didn't impact him that much, what did was his first bullies at a young age. Just a group of young thugs that thought it'd be funny to pick on Justin. It started out light, then it got more intense as Justin let it continue. Eventually, it got violent, and Justin came home bruised and battered, as the teachers didn't seem to care. Well, Meifeng caught wind of it and was having none of it. She decided to sign Justin (and Katie, for good measure) up for martial arts lessons - specifically Muay Thai. After a few months, Justin felt a lot more confident in himself and stood up to the bullies. It ended with some broken noses and teeth.
From there, Justin's confidence helped him make a scene for himself, and find people like him. He made a friend or two in the skater scene, and after a lot of fumbling, and falling on his ass, became a confident skateboarder (The coordination training from Muay Thai helped). Falling into the skating scene meant he fell into the punk crowd. The kind of kids that liked to smoke (both tobacco and weed). It leads him to become, in his own words, "an impetuous shithead." His behavior took a nosedive as he also became wild and disrespectful. Which wasn't going to fly in the Liao household. Meifeng took all sorts of measures to discipline Justin, but nothing short of drastic measures did anything to curb this ill behavior.
After getting through school and graduation through sheer dumb luck, Justin didn't have any real commitments, so Meifeng sent him to stay with his Grandmother in Farmer Hill. A little shithole of a town in the middle of nowhere... perfect for somebody who doesn't like to be bothered. Of course, Lihua appreciated Justin's company... while Justin hated the town. He hated everything about it. From its location to the people in it. He wanted to get the hell out of there, but Meifeng didn't want to send him home until he learned how to act. Lihua made sure to discipline the child and give him a bit more perspective on life.
It took him a while, but Justin adjusted to life in this backwater shithole of a town and was humbled over time (after many ass whoopings). Eventually, he came to like it over time, after making a few friends in the town, he decided to change. To try to become the best person he can be because life's short. He decided to try to attend college, and get started on his education. His first attempt was to get into a college in Los Angeles failed horribly, and his mother got him into Grand Ridge. He was salty as any human being could be but accepted that this town would never let him go no matter how hard he tried.
He aimed towards a master's degree in psychology, because of his interest in how the human mind worked (and because he wanted to have something to brag about). He bounced back and forth between school, hanging out with friends and his grandmother's house... until one day he came home from class, and saw a bunch of police outside his grandmother's house... carrying out a body in a black bag. Justin was immediately filled with dread, and he asked a cop what had happened, only for his suspicions to be confirmed: Lihua was dead. They said that somebody had broken in and killed her, but stole absolutely nothing. They said that they had no idea what could have happened to her, and absolutely no leads. Which was, from the way Justin interpreted it, their way of saying they were completely useless. The Liao family was devastated by Lihua's death, and they all had no idea how to cope with it.
But, Justin wouldn't let it go. Even as the months passed, and he ended up getting a dorm in Grand Ridge, the haunting sight of what happened to his grandmother made it hard to focus. He felt that this was his higher calling in life: figuring out the mystery of his grandmother.
Because if the stupid cops won't do it; he will.
During the events of the previous part, Justin didn't play a huge part in the events. He merely followed the group from point A to point B, held his tongue about his suspicions of Britney, and fought in the various battles. Yet, he wasn't ready for the confrontation with the Glutton nor was he ready for the death of Claire O'Sullivan.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"I don't think I can use my past skills and experiences now."
Muai Thai ⫻ Justin took some Muay Thai courses when he was younger to help him defend himself from a group of bullies. He'd say that the training paid off because he's a competent fighter, able to use all of his skills to take down even the toughest of opponents. But, he's out of practice due to one; not training or even practicing, and two; not really fighting.
Skateboarding ⫻ One thing that Justin excelled at was skateboarding. Learning from a friend, he became an expert in it and could pull off some sick tricks. His balance and precision are also pretty good because of it.
Chinese ⫻ Because Justin grew up in a primarily Chinese household, he learned how to speak the language - though it comes second to him.
"Love and passion... cannot be burned, it burns you."
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Soul-Self, a flaming manifestation of all of Justin's passion that he can control.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Justin has an abstraction that has a basis similar to Astral-Projection, he can create a flaming being known as the Soul-Self. It is a physical manifestation of all of his emotions, taking the shape of either a Burning Tiger, or a Phoenix - except, located in their chest area is a heart of fire. The Phoenix has a right foot wing-span, and is five feet tall, and is capable of flight. The Tiger is around the size and shape of a South Chinese Tiger (four and a half feet at the shoulder, and eight feet long from head to tail), but is burning far hotter and more intensely. There doesn't seem to be a deciding factor as to which one manifests, it's completely random. Both of these beings are burning with intense flames, and possess rudimentary pyrokinetic abilities (are capable of creating flames), and is capable of interacting with the world via a weak=telekinetic ability, but Justin does not control them directly.
It is true that there possesses a link between himself, and his Soul-Self, he just he lacks control over it. It manifests on its own, and possesses no mind - it fulfills what Justin's heart desires the most at the moment. If Justin wants to protect somebody, it'll manifest and rush right in between them and a threat. If Justin is feeling really angry, it'll manifest and destroy what is making Justin angry. Not worrying about the collateral damage that takes place between itself and the objective. The Soul-Self is a very dangerous being, given that it's hot enough to set a forest aflame just by manifesting - not only that, but it's mere presence "enhances" flames, and makes them larger and more intense by its mere presence. When the Soul-Self is active, Justin himself is disconnected from his emotions. He doesn't use his heart but is instead a cold and logical machine. This is because the Soul-Self is Justin's emotions in a physical form. Justin is immune to flames created by the Soul-Self and has access to the ability to create flames himself - very small, weak, flames, but he can still give somebody a good burn. He's also connected to fire itself. Depending on how he feels, he can cause flames to flare up, burn brighter (or weaker), and flames will go out if he is injured or knocked out. The Blind cannot perceive the Soul-Self, only the effects it has on the world.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ The Soul-Self gets far more powerful in the mountain's grace - its form is twice as large, it's flames are hotter, and it can go further away from Justin. When the Soul-Self is manifested here, Justin doesn't lose access to all of his emotions as it also burns some of his logical sides just to compensate. It turns a blue color to represent the new source of fuel.
LIMITS ⫻ Justin, as it stands, cannot control the Soul-Self. It follows whatever innate desire or impulse that Justin is feeling at the moment, which means that he cannot summon it at will when his mind needs it. Only when his heart needs it. This also means it's extremely destructive and causes immense collateral damage. The only way he can conquer and eventually control the Soul-Self is to face the emotions that he keeps locked up. He also possesses no way to control fire except when he's near the mountain. In fact, his presence makes fire more dangerous. The Soul-Self, when active, is only able to travel within six or so meters from him (nine in the presence of the mountain).
WEAKNESSES ⫻ The Soul-Self is affected by anything that would affect regular flames. Water can extinguish them, they can be suffocated, or extinguished by sand and dirt. If the Soul-Self was to be destroyed, Justin would be knocked unconscious for a few hours. In addition, if he's knocked out, any flames - whether or not it's created by him, would immediately be extinguished in a fifteen-meter radius. Justin's Soul-self is also very dangerous as it burns up a ton of oxygen, and he's not immune to any flames indirectly created by it. It also cannot be controlled and possesses as of a danger to himself as anyone else.
"We all want to be our very best, right? To find our counterpoint."
"Call me cute, whatever you think will get you in my pants."

"Here comes the freakshow herself, whaddup."
When Claire walks in, she'll definitely catch your attention. Whether it's her immense height for a female, attire, eye-catching loud attitude, or "badass" demeanor that she gives off. She usually has a scowl on her face and keeps up an aura of a very venomous snake. One that you want to stay faaaaaar away from as possible. Unless you want to get bit. Course, that aura flips in the blink of an eye, that scowls turns upside down, and Claire is being personable and vibrant. It makes it hard to get a read or her, but easy to stop judging a book by it's cover. Or she just looks like a complete and utter tryhard.
Claire is a tomboy, just super masculine. Whether it's her gruff, weathered voice, from all the smoking she does, and the tough-girl demeanor she gives off. Though, her body is fairly thin, and not especially muscular or fat. She seems to get by on the smallest amount of exercise, and the highest metabolism possible. Though, all the running she does (from people, and just in general) makes it easy to keep the body fat off. The other problem with the whole "masculine" thing is that Claire's body is pretty... flat. She doesn't have too many curves. Her chest is a 32D, and her behind is pretty flat, lacking in sex appeal. She has boy's frame, to put it lightly. That's not even getting into her short brown pixie cut, or the fact that Claire is enormous (up there with the boys).
To say the least, Claire doesn't care that much about being the prettiest princess, or any of that jazz. She's already self-conscious. She's an Irish-woman to her very bone and has a snappy attitude to match it. She's quick with her jabs and will go to furiously angry in the blink of an eye. Claire's skin tone is somewhat tanned due to all the sunlight she gets, but not too brown. She has like a slight brown hue.
Claire's fairly obsessed with the punk aesthetic, so that is something she adapted well. From her short hair to her makeup (usually she has on eyeshadow), to the piercings all over her body (her cheek, nose, ear, belly button, and nipples, are pierced). To her attire, she dresses to get a point across - other than that she likes punk - she wants to look tough, and look good. She dresses like a stereotypical tough-girl by wearing studded jackets, heavy boots, and more. Sometimes she dresses even lighter in things like t-shirts and jeans, and with her resting bitch face alone she gets across her point. Ironically enough, she doesn't have any tattoos at all.
She has a diamond-shaped head that gets thinner the more you go down. She has a fairly good looking triangle-shaped nose, with triangular nostrils, and a thinnish nose bridge. Her eyes are unturned and medium-sized, they usually have a piercing gaze in them as if Claire is staring right through you. Eye colors are a light-brown color to match her dark-brown hair color. Ears are crescent-shaped and pretty damn big, not hilarious, but you'll definitely pay a bit of attention to them. Her lips are thin, and probably the least ladylike possible to make it hard to kiss her. To top it off, her jaw is squared, and sharp.
"On a scale of one to school shooter, how much therapy do I need?"
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Claire's main goal in life is to, surprisingly, become a nurse. She wants to help people, and be someone who will make a difference in life.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Claire believes that everyone has a happiness out there, waiting for them, and most importantly, the decency of human kindness. She believes that it is good for everyone, and unhappy or bad people are the people who need kindness the most. She hates the self-sustaining cycle of rage and hatred that consume so many people (Even though she's pretty angry herself), so she'll do anything to break it. Claire believes that true happiness comes from helping people.
SECRETS ⫻ Claire's biggest secret is her past. She hates the abuse she suffers and will do anything to move on from it. To her, her parents died long before she was even born, and she lived with her grandparents for god knows how long. In addition, she keeps her sex life a secret due to the shame associated with it, and that she's not quite ready to come out as bisexual.
DESIRES ⫻ Claire wants to have fun and will go to any length to forget about the past. Whether it's indulging in any physical pleasure from sex, drugs, or liquor. The consequences are irrelevant.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Claire used to call herself straight, but she's willing to throw herself into the arms of anyone. She's entertained the thought and realized that she's bisexual from this point forward. Something that she's not willing to say out loud, but the girls of Farmer Hill don't seem to object.
FEARS ⫻ Above all else, Claire fears being weak. She fears that she lacks the strength to be her own person and that she'll fail when it's the most important. Which has caused an obsession with appearing tough, and looking for strength wherever she can.
REPUTATION ⫻ Claire's reputation in Farmer Hill is pretty shitty. For starters, she's seen as the town bicycle. That's not great. On the other hand, all the shitty things she's done like vandalism, theft, and other acts, are catching up to her. Everyone in Farmer Hill knows about her and knows she's a wild child.
PET PEEVES ⫻ Claire's main pet peeve is assuming things without knowing the context (or putting in the effort to learn it). Such as Claire, everyone assumes that she's trouble because of a variety of rumors, or just because they don't like her. She hates people who say and do things they don't believe in for approval, and she hates hypocrisy above all else.
QUIRKS ⫻ Claire has the oddest habit of them all... chewing on objects. It's a habit that she had when she was a kid. Whenever she gets a chance, she'll chew on a solid object that'll fit in her mouth. Which is why a lot of her childhood toys have chew marks on them.
"Why do you care about where I came from? Farmer Hill, Montana... Jesus..."
Claire was once a good girl, many moons ago. She had hope, she believed in something. She was just a native of Farmer Hill, the daughter of a diner owner, and a waitress. Everything was good... up until the diner was closed down due to running out of money. Then the O'Sullivan's idyllic dream went sour, and they moved to a trailer park in Mason Square. The downgrade tore the O'Sullivan family apart, and Claire's parents turned to alcohol to cope. And they weren't the happy kind of drunks. They were the violent kind of drunks that turned their rage on anything they could.
Claire was too young to understand alcohol, but she had no choice but to take the beatings with a straight face. Might as well, because it wasn't like Claire had any other options. She would go to school and lie about what happened. Eventually, Claire became the punching bag for all sorts of abuse, since her parents had no one else to vent their rage towards. And there wasn't anything Claire could do to stop them. She'd be homeless or dead if she tried to fight back, but this planted rage in Claire. Rage towards her parents, and rage towards herself due to being so weak.
There was some comfort in life; her grandparents. She went to stay with them as much as she could since they only lived a short walk away at their ranch. She stayed there long as she could, as much as she could. Coming up with excuse after excuse... until they got suspicious, and called child services. This was the relief that Claire was looking for, and she spilled everything they did. She was promptly removed from their household, and placed in the care of her grandparents. With her parents instructed to never come anywhere near her, or her grandparents.
This was like the dream that Claire was desperately looking for... only that the damage was already done. She thought that it was over, but the mental damage was already done. She couldn't help but think about them constantly, and it hurt her in every way. As she matured and developed, she lashed out and eventually sought solace wherever she possibly could. It started with hanging out with the wrong crowd, to trying drugs, to experimenting with the same gender. In the end... it became a habit that shaped her. Into a hedonist that wants to do anything to forget about the past, and erase those thoughts.
Though, there were a few people that were able to keep her on the straight on the straight and narrow, people that reminded her of what she really was deep down. The first person was Zoey Gray, a girl that Claire had known since she was a little girl - before the abuse started. Zoey and Claire were inseparable, and even with the changes, Zoey stuck with Claire. Their friendship was incredibly close (to the point where people wondered if they were seeing each other), but Claire wanted to keep it platonic. Because she felt like Zoey was too good for her - case in point, Zoey was beginning to emulate Claire.
The other person, who was more surprising, was Britney Williams, who was one of the town's princesses. Their friendship was formed by Britney's desire to rebel, and they became friends. Briefly, and secretly, they both became much closer than friends, but they drifted apart rather quickly. However, they remained in touch, remembering the fun they had.
Claire got through school, and wondered about her future... and decided to follow her long lost wish of becoming a nurse. Her grandparents had already saved up enough money for her to get through school, or at least try to, so she got into Grand Ridge Academy. Which she has been attending for a few months, trying to get her life back in order, but yet, she's finding it hard not to fall back onto old habits. She still had problems, and she still looked for ways to ease the pain, anything to make it hurt less. Having sex with her classmates made it hard to shake the "town bicycle" reputation she had before.
She still improved, however. At parties, she went a little lighter on a drinking and wasn't as easy as she once was. With the help of Zoey Gray at her side, she had her own little coach, and everything was going great. Then the semester ended and Zoey signed up for a camping trip that Grand Ridge was hosting that was supposed to take place over the summer, and Claire wondered, why not...
Claire had been through it all, from the massacre at the camp, to Awakening, but at Hillview High she met her end at the hands of the Glutton.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"Got a boo-boo? Let Dr. Claire patch it up."
Medical ⫻ Claire, for what it's worth, sticks to those books. She's determined to become a nurse and has all sorts of medical knowledge. She knows injuries, and how to treat them. Hand her a medkit, and she'll have a stab wound patched up to the best of her ability... enough to get someone to a real doctor.
Sneaky ⫻ Years of acting out requires years of hiding. There were several times where Claire had to dip and duck from someone she robbed or someone's house she vandalized. She turned it into an art, actually. Even if she got caught, she can run!
Tagging ⫻ A little thing she picked up from her friend Zoey was her talent with spraypainting. She has become an expert in tagging any surface and creating art from nothing.
"Hey puddin'... do you really want that handjob now?"
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Psionic-Strength, the ability to augment the user's body with their mental energy.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Claire's abstraction is practically a lower-yield version of telekinesis. Except she can only use that telekinesis on touch with other abilities. It's the manifestation of her will-power in her body and allows her to tap into a strength that no one else has access to. She is immensely stronger than a human being should be, being able to lift 450lb with no problem normally, and strike with bone-breaking amounts of force. Because it's telekinetic in nature, she doesn't have to worry about bracing, and grip, because a telekinetic-field is wrapped around it and allows her to move it. Simulating true strength. This ability also comes with a durability. When she senses danger, she subconsciously projects a defensive field around herself which blocks damage. However, there's a limit to how much it can take before breaking. It can, at most, stop five pistol rounds before giving in. Which means that weak-shit punches and kicks will only annoy her slightly. Whenever she uses her ability it creates a blue aura around herself, specifically the limb that is doing the work (so if she gets punched, the aura should appear at the point of impact). The Abstraction, like the powers of many Awakened, is linked to her emotions. Feeling anger will increase the potency of her strength, and durability. To the point where she can lift up 750lb, and take a barrage of bullets, at max rage. This changes the color of her aura to a bright-red color, and gives off a red "smoke."
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ The mountain, of course, allows her to normally lift around 1050lb, and 1225lb when enraged. Making her a physical powerhouse, but it breaks a sub-conscious limit in her head and allows her to use telekinesis. It allows her to lift up any object that is below a hundred pounds, and small, and manipulate it. Twist it, move it, and send it flying. She can only lift up around two objects at a time, and it requires hand movement from both of her hands - one for each object.
LIMITS ⫻ Claire's abstraction, like many others, require a degree of mental effort in order to tap into its telekinetic force. Such prolongation of usage tends to weaken her body and mind; and in order to avoid a headache and fatigue, Claire has to limit herself in using her abstraction, usually few minutes of extensive and constant use before she feels such effects. Giving proper use and control, Claire manages to use her power for at least 30 minutes or two third of that if in stressful situations. Other Awakened can resist her field's effects, and thank blows from her.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Claire's field can possibly be ignored by the Awakened, and other Extra-Normal beings. As her shield only protects her from physical harm, but not mental. A mental ability of any kind being used on her can interfere with the connection between her shield and her mind, and make her vulnerable by removing it. Or creating a weakness in the shell.
"Now looks like I'm a freak for sure, now...."
Claire... I'm going to miss you.
Dex... I should have saved you. You were the only person in this town I could trust.
I like Justin, he's my friend... I hope that, in time, he'll learn to trust me but it's getting hard with everything that has happened.
Kimberly is odd... strange, and I guess she's the only person not to speak out against me. But I know she has her doubts.
I feel sorry for her, but I feel extra sorry that I dragged her into this.
I used to hate this girl... but help's running short these days and I have to put it aside if we're gonna get through this.
I don't even care about her little investigation anyway - She deserves to know what happened to this town.
She wants answers, I have answers, but will she like my answers.
I hate to say it, but I think he's a lot more useful than he looks and acts... he might be the only thing able to keep Penny calm.
There's a lot more to this girl than she leads on. I just wonder if I can trust her.
Claire... I'm going to kill that thing for you. I promise.
I'm willing to see from her side of the story, but I think she's really starting to push it. Either she starts telling us what she knows or we'll get it out of her.
I think there's more important things to worry about now than our feud, at least for Tuyen's sake..
If I die, I think I should clear up any and all doubts.
"I learned that there's a lot more to this world than I thought, and I'm wondering if I dug too deep."

"Looks and brains... I feel like I hit the genetic jackpot."
Lynette is definitely a girl that stands out in the crowd. With her massive head of kinky black hair, and near-matching dark skin, she stands out in contrast to the predominately white Farmer Hill. Though, other than that, her aura and demeanor are generally subdued. She generally lingers in the back, out of sight, rather than taking the forefront. Even when she's moving, she doesn't really stand out with any kind of swagger, or confident walk. Her gait is relatively calm, and collected, she slowly takes steps one at a time - and also watches her step in case she steps in or on something. Her voice is soft, but she speaks quietly and doesn't really shout, or anything of the sort. She can be called mousy, and what gives her a bit of a librarian demeanor is the large, thin-rimmed, glasses, that she wears.
Lynette is definitely African at first glance - specifically Afro-Caribbean with the slight accent she has. What they don't know is that Lynette has a few South American countries in her blood - mainly Columbia, and Argentina, but it goes a bit deeper. Lynette's skin is such a deep black color, that it's hard to tell that she's anything other than black. Her skin is relatively clear - she has a few scars, but nothing that'd really pop up. She does have afro-textured hair, that is very curly, and forms a near-afro of sorts. Her hair is also so dark that it nearly matches her skin. Her hair is very clean and well maintained.
Lynette's build is very lanky, and thin, built up from a little bit of yoga and morning jogs to keep the weight off. Though, she definitely isn't without her curves. She has a "bubble-butt" that keeps the boys staring, and has a 36F cup which means she isn't a slouch in the chest department either. This would be great if Lynette had any real interest in romance. Probably the most defining feature about Lynette's face is her full pointed lips, and her small, brown, almond-shaped eyes. Her jawline is sharp, and her cleft-chin is hardly noticeable given how it blends into the rest of her face. Her abnormally large, crescent-shaped ears are thankfully hidden by her enormous afro.
"Of course, magic, gods and the occult are real... and are a lot scarier than what I envisioned."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Lynette is trying to figure out her family's past, and what exactly are the "Witch Mothers." After learning about the Glutton, she wants to get what she came for and leave.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Lynette takes a page from Albert Einstein, and says that her life philosophy at its basis is to create satisfaction for herself and other people and to create something from nothing. Which means that the only way she'll be happy is by learning, and finding out about herself, and her past that she didn't know. Not just for the sake of it, because it's something that she's passionate about.
SECRETS ⫻ One thing that Lynette keeps hush about is her fascination with occultism and her search into her grandmother's past. For starters, she doesn't want to sound like some devil worshipping kook - and the fact that she'll probably sound crazy.
DESIRES ⫻ Lynette desires learning, and creativity, though a part of her desires a partner or two to share all this knowledge with. Somebody who's intelligent as she is, and is capable of discussing all of her philosophical concepts with.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Lynette isn't quite sure of what she wants... or if she's even sexual at all. She's tried it with both boys, and even girls, and... it just didn't work. She just wasn't "feeling it." Maybe it was because she had other things on her mind and no time for romance.
FEARS ⫻ Lynette fears nothing in particular.
REPUTATION ⫻ Lynette's reputation in Farmer Hill isn't the best... she's known merely as a nosy girl, due to her habits of trying to dig into the town's past. Mostly the parts about the town's past that nobody wants to be uncovered.
PET PEEVES ⫻ People who expect her to conform to "norms" or other such things and think that she's strange for deviating from them are on top of Lynette's shitlist. She's dealt with a lifetime of being thinking that she's strange because she doesn't get along with people that well, and doesn't want any more of it.
QUIRKS ⫻ Has a habit of freezing when put on the spot, and can be thrown off by people sometimes. She also carries around her grandmother's journal around everywhere in her purse. Also signs her name with her middle initial.
"How did I go from New York to fighting a God? Here, lemme tell you."
Lynette's past was relatively simple: was born in New York as the daughter to a father that worked for one of the big companies situated there. He was no CEO, but he definitely had more than a living wage - all because of good schooling. Lynette's mother was a deaf woman who was one of his coworkers that were brought upon to show that his business is diverse. Eventually, the two got romantically involved, and he ended up marrying her - not before putting a baby in her! That baby was Lynette, the oldest child and start of a vast family with five other siblings coming after her.
Lynette and her siblings were given the best schooling money could buy - and with daddy Dominguez going nowhere, money kept flowing in. She was relatively close to her mother because her father was busy and she was left alone with raising the kids. Lynette was a bit different than her siblings because as where they sought out social interaction, Lynette sought out knowledge. She was far more academic than her siblings. She wasn't the most socially outgoing person, but she was by no means socially awkward. She was good enough with interactions to help her gain a friend or two but largely was ignored by the masses.
Which was fine with Lynette, her raging curiosity was what kept her motivated. Once she hit her teens, puberty hit and she grew out finely. Good enough to attract the attention of a few boys... but none of them went anywhere because it was difficult for Lynette to connect with them - or they just wanted into her pants. She pushed them away... and eventually, through the help of a friend, found the joys of video gaming. It was pretty much her fun outlet she used when she wasn't studying, or researching something. It came to the point where her sisters tried their damn near hardest to pull her away from the consoles, but it wouldn't work.
Lynette gained another hobby when she was digging through her mother's belongings one night - out of a boredom induced curiosity - and found a journal. A journal that belonged to her late-grandmother, oddly written in clear English. It spoke of a line of women that were known as "Witch Mothers," back in her home, and were practitioners of magic. Healers of a different variety that used their talents for good, or bad. Lynette became immediately fascinated with the practice and immediately went to research it online... only to find nothing of it. She looked into Vodou, but it was nothing like what the journal talked about (or even how the West depicted the religion).
So, Lynette launched a clandestine search into her past and roots, and surprisingly there are no traces or records of any ancestors past her grandmother - even though her journal explicitly said that there was a long line. Lynette also dug into any form of practice of magic or occultism and became quite fascinated by the various arts - especially witchcraft. She seemingly became an expert in it in the months that she had researched into it. However, she didn't find a trace of the Witch Mothers, or her bloodline - what she did find, was a little clue to her search.
The end of her grandmother's journal was burnt off, but it mentioned a place known as "Farmer Hill" being a "Nexus." Which was a weird phrase, but Lynette did some googling, and found Farmer Hill, Montana. Which was the only trace she could find. She had become near-obsessed with her grandmother's legacy and wasn't going to leave it alone at this. So, once she finished high-schools lined up... but she settled on Grand Ridge. Just so she can get to the bottom of this, then transfer to an actually good college.
She started towards her degree in STEM and as a way of blowing off steam, she participated in the camping trip later on that summer. Of course, Lynette came out of that incident scarred and getting something that she thought was limited to myth: magic. She accidentally set off an alarm at Grand Ridge, but she joined the support group and played along with the rest of the group... until the battle with the Glutton.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"I don't know everything, just what I know."
Spanish ⫻ Lynette has a lot of Spanish in her family, so naturally, she saw to it that she picks up the language. She had her family teach her a little bit, before taking a class in Spanish in high school to perfect it. She, naturally, is very skilled at communicating in Spanish and can hold conversations at length in Spanish. Though, in Farmer Hill, she just calls people names.
ASL ⫻ Another language that Lynette has picked up due to having a deaf mother was sign language. Since she was a little girl, she has played interpreter for her so things would be easy. So, naturally, she knows this like the back of her hand. She probably knows sign language as well as she knows English.
Knowledge ⫻ Lynette has always been a Grade-A student. She has spent a great amount of time learning as much as she possibly can from a variety of subjects through her schooling year. Mainly things such as English, Psychology, Geography, and so on. She's incredibly book smart.
Gaming ⫻ Lynette is also an avid gamer, and that's pretty much what she pretty much spends most of her spare time doing as has more fun with a controller and keyboard than chatting with somebody. She plays a variety of different games, her favorite being competitive games.
Occultism ⫻ Lynette has devoted a great deal of time in researching the various occultic practices of the world. It wasn't all that useful, and was just a little hobby of hers... but she's about to make great usage out of it.
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Elemental Glyphs, the ability to produce different elemental effects by drawing their glyphs on an object.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Lynette's abstraction is rooted in her fascination in the magical and occult parts of her past, mixed with her interest in spiritualism, and the symbolism of other cultures. She has an abstraction that is best described as Glyph Magic. How it works is that she basically draws one of five symbols on an object, and an elemental (or psychic) effect (or better described as a "spell") is created from the glyph. Lynette has access to six different elementals; the four classical elements. They are Fire, Water, Air, and Earth, each with their own symbol that needs to be drawn to access their power. After drawing the glyph, Lynette, at will, can command the glyph to use their spell. It can be a fireball, to a wall of ice, to a tremor shock, to even a miniature tornado. However, the scale of the glyph is what dictates its strength. A glyph drawn on her palm will be able to produce basketball-sized effects (Fireball, ice-ball, etc), while a glyph the size of a car is what will allow her to create the more powerful effects.
There is no real limit to how large or small a glyph can be. In theory, she can create a glyph that encompasses fields, or even the size of countries. That's only a theory, however, as in practice it'd take incredible amounts of time and effort to pull off, and it can easily be interrupted. In addition, Lynette can create glyphs out of any material, on any surface - she just has to draw the glyph. She can draw it in the dirt with a stick, or even draw it on herself with a marker. The glyphs have a "charge," or are a battery, that depletes with usage. The smaller "spells" use less of a charge, while the larger ones take up a lot more energy. The larger glyphs, of course, hold a bigger charge.
Below are the elements Lynette has access to:
Fire: Fire Spells are fairly straightforward as far as elements go. It's essentially conjuring flames, and Lynette has the ability to conjure said flames in a variety of different forms. From the simple fireball to a massive wave of fire. It's fairly flexible in usage, and the damage it causes cannot be ignored.
Water: Water is the element that Lynette has the highest affinity towards, which means this form of magic is the strongest, and she can do the most with it. Water comes in several forms: Liquid, gas, and solid. In its liquid form, Lynette is able to create water in a variety of different shapes. From a jet-stream, a whip, an orb of water, and more. In its liquid form, Lynette is only really able to create obscuring mist, and fog. However, in its ice form, Lynette is able to create ice in nearly any shape imaginable, limited only by quality. She is capable of manipulating existing water forms by creating a glyph near it.
Air: Unlike the other elements Lynette is unable to create air but has to manipulate existing air. It's as straightforward as manipulating fire: she can move air in a variety of different forms. From creating breezes, squalls, gusts, whirlwinds, zephyrs, gales, tempests, and even hurricanes if she's able to create a glyph large enough.
Earth: Probably the most destructive, and the element that she has the least affinity towards, but it's easily the most destructive. Earth allows her to manipulate all forms of stone, from natural to artificial. She can cause the earth to completely reshape, or send it flying at somebody. She's also capable of manipulating soil and plant life to a smaller extent. She can even cause tremors by drawing the glyph on the ground.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ The mountain's graces allow Lynette to effectively cast spells without needing to draw glyphs first. She gains the ability to manifest "ghost glyphs" on objects by focusing really hard and creating them on the object. These ghost glyphs effectively are the same as her regular glyphs but have one usage before they disappear for good. It takes a few moments for them to manifest, and it takes a long wait before the larger ones appear. In addition, if she draws a glyph, she'll be able to cast larger spells from smaller glyphs, and far more efficiently.
LIMITS ⫻ To even access the meat of her abstraction, Lynette needs to draw it first. Which can be difficult in a lot of situations and circumstances. It may be easy enough to draw a small glyph, but in order to use the meat of her abstraction, she'll need to draw a larger glyph. In addition, the glyph needs to be neatly, and cleanly drawn, or else it won't be nearly as effective. Lynette can only have three active glyphs at a time (five when she's in the presence of the mountain). When she reaches this limit and creates a new one, the oldest glyph will immediately fade away. She can only interact with these glyphs in a five-meter radius, once she's outside of it, they are effectively useless until she gets back in range. The glyphs will also fade away after twenty minutes.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ The glyphs can be destroyed, by either supernatural or mundane means. Even smudging it greatly is enough to render it useless. In addition, glyphs can be destroyed by being exposed to their opposing element (Fire can be erased by a cup of water, air can be removed by a rock, etc). In addition, Lynette lacks any immunities or protections from these elements - and neither does whatever she draws the glyphs on. She can be burned by fire, frozen by ice, and so on... so it's ill-advised that she creates the glyphs on herself. Lest she wants to give herself a nasty burn.
"I wonder where the trail ends... I hope it's satisfying, at least."
"Like the jacket? It almost hides the fact I'm getting fat!"
Kimberly (or Kim as she likes to describe herself) is one of the girls that thinks she's plain. She feels as if she doesn't have the face, body, or curves, of models. And in truth, she doesn't have the attributes that make them attractive. Instead, her round and pudgy face, large angular face, and glasses invoke a librarian look. The appearance of a brainy girl, they wouldn't be that far off. Kimberly likes to look the part. But, in demeanor, she appears to be very excitable, and mobile. Constantly on the move making spastic movements. This energetic, child-like demeanor shows in her face, too. Since, she's constantly smiling and speaks in a cheerful manner. She speaks fast but rarely speaks rudely. Not many people would perceive Kimberly as a threat, but some people get the feeling that she's faking. Which is true in some way.
Kimberly's facial features are rounded, and her jawline is practically nonexistent. She at least wished she got to have a jawline, but she digresses. With her nose being large, round, she invokes a very child-like appearance about her. Her lips are almond-shaped, and not that large. Along with her ears being pretty small, and somewhat pointed at the tip - but her ears are always concealed by her luscious head of chocolate-brown wavy hair that goes down to her chest. Her eyes are droopy, and a bright-green color. Kimberly is also known for having an enormous forehead, one that she keeps covered with bangs.
Kimberly is fairly thin, she has a little bit of pudge building up due to lack of exercise, and her terrible eating habits, but it isn't anything that can't be hidden underneath a heavy layer of clothing. Other than that, her skin tone is slightly pale from all the time spent indoors. She has blemishes on her face and a little bit of acne. She doesn't have any marks on her body, other than a few childhood scars that haven't faded. Her skin tone is the result of being primarily French, with a bit of German, and being distantly Blackfoot. As for the rest of her body, she has a banana body-shape. Not a body with a whole lot of curves, her shoulders are around the same width as her waist. Her bust (28H) being fairly small, and same with her hips, she doesn't have a whole lot of curves.
Kimberly dresses fairly plainly. It seems that she never wears outfits that catch the eye. From hoodies with dull colors, and jeans that are a few sizes too large for her. As Kimberly still gets most of her outfits from hand me downs. But, sometimes her attire dips into the hipster as she adorns varsity jackets and other outdated outfits of the time. But this is rare. The only constant in her outfit is her black, wide-framed, glasses.
"I'm not going out like a dog."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Kimberly wants to surive the Glutton, any way she can.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Her outlook on life is basically to let people live. She's not a fan of forcing ideas on other people, and therefore hates the people that do. She believes that people should be free long as they aren't hurting people or anything of the sort.
SECRETS ⫻ Kimberly has a deep-seated anger, and jealousy, for the people around her all for the fact that they seem to be in better places in life than her. She acknowledges how ridiculous this is, and keeps it as a secret. Instead, she acts chipper, and holds it in, distracting herself with other things.
DESIRES ⫻ Kimberly desires to learn more about herself, and other people, by gaining other perspectives on life. So she can incorporate their philosophy into her own. In addition, she desires companionship and friendship. People who think and sees things the way she does. She also wants to be self-sustaining as possible.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Kimberly is heterosexual to her core.
FEARS ⫻ Kimberly fears going nowhere in life and becoming a parasite for her friends and family to leech off their success. Which fuels her obsession with being self-sustaining as possible. In addition, Kimberly fears spiders and all arachnids due to a hilarious prank played on her by her cousin.
REPUTATION ⫻ Kimberly's reputation in Farmer Hill (and arguably Grand Ridge) is iffy at best. She's known as an over-imaginative weirdo that plays ghost hunter with a camera. All because of her web series, and her love of being an internet personality. Other than that, she remains relatively unknown, and thus, mostly ignored. Most people know her as the barista chick, while others hardly know her for her bootleg DVD creating business. She likes to keep it that way.
PET PEEVES ⫻ Kimberly is deeply annoyed to her core by hypocrisy, and worst of all, people calling her hypocritical. If you want to get on her bad side really fast, make sure to call her that. In addition, she's annoyed by people who think "it's just a joke" is an okay excuse, people who assume things about people, and close-mindedness.
QUIRKS ⫻ Kimberly has a habit of sticking her tongue out at random points in the middle of the interaction. Kimberly also has the habit of holding up her camera to her chin at random points.
"Now Farmer Hill's a literal hell."
Kimberly was born a native of Farmer Hill, born the child of a banker, and a soldier in the army. Kimberly's father was away for most of her life, but her mother made sure to pick up the slack. And when it became hard, her mother would always seek out her extended family, who were also situated in Farmer Hill. Thus, Kimberly had all the love and affection she needed so she doesn't become a psychopath. She had a sister however, and her name was Beth Walton. You see, Kimberly and Beth were the best of friends, and would spend literally hours together every day. It was like Kimberly had the sibling she always wanted! The two especially loved exploring, and traveling to different cities.
But, as they grew older, they began to develop interests and whatnot in photography. It started with buying a cheap disposable camera from the supermarket, and then it sparked into buying them hundred dollar cameras. The two kids had developed an artistic eye from a young age, and loved taking pictures of everything they could. Once this became a bit more serious, Beth and Kimberly agreed that they would become the greatest two photographers in the world. That they would go to Grand Ridge Academy for Photography. The moment came where they both graduated from high school, and college was coming around. Kimberly got accepted into Grand Ridge.
As for Beth? She went to a college in upstate New York. Leaving behind Kimberly to pursue her own goals.
Kimberly was hurt by the betrayal, and could never get a straight answer from Beth. It'd always be something about how she wanted to travel, or how her parents wanted to go, and how she wanted Kimberly to live her life. Only for Beth to send photos to Kimberly of her exploits. Never getting the answer she wanted, Kimberly became disillusioned with her photography, eventually having to drop out of her photography class, and skip a semester as she decided to reevaluate herself.
Kimberly got a job in cafe Sucre (as they were desperate for fresh blood), and developed a mild obsession with web series. As an experiment, she made a few videos with her phone and put them on Youtube under the pen name "PaperSister_07." What little reception she got from the videos was very positive, and motivated her to try something different. She used her camera's camcorder function to record better videos, and give herself a better idea of what she wanted to do.
Her web series (Named "Project: Worlds Unknown") was a ghost hunter series where Kimberly plays a paranormal investigator that hunts monsters of the world. It got fairly good reception, and that was what motivated Kimberly to not only buy better equipment but pursue a career in Cinematography.
Afterward, her popularity boomed (she currently has over a hundred-thousand subscriber), and she became an internet personality. Just as a break she went on the camping trip and was exposed to the horrendous mass murder that she barely escaped with her life. Afterward, she participated in the events of the story with Jordan at her side and didn't contribute much since she was yet to realize her abstraction.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"I'm good at sending my friends memes, that's a start."
Photography ⫻ Kimberly was born to be a photographer. Even from a young age, she put any cheap camera she could find to good use. Now that her equipment and skills have advanced quite a bit, she has quite a photographic eye. With her camera never leaving her side, few things miss her.
Cinematography ⫻ Kimberly was already a bit ahead of the curve with her expertise in photography. The moment she started recording her web series and taking classes, she entered a whole new area entirely. While she is no professional, she isn't a novice either.
Eagle-Eyed ⫻ Leading into the above skill, Kimberly has a very good eye for detail and is perceptive. Not even the most subtle movement gets past her.
Climbing ⫻ Kimberly, to help her take better pictures, have undergone a training to learn to climb things better. So far, she is pretty good. Enough to climb fences at the pace of a slug.
"What can I even do against the Glutton? It's going to kill us all and I can't even teleport away."
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Photographic-Teleportation, the ability to teleport to different locations using photos as a medium.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Kimberly's Abstraction manifested in her love of photography. If she has a photo of a location in her hands, she is engulfed in a white light and is sent to that location. It'll take a few moments to "charge" but she'll appear there in a flash of light. It just takes a bit of focus and envisioning. She has to focus on the picture, and picture herself being there, and then she'll begin "charging," as the aura of light surrounds her. This ability works with any place that Kimberly has taken a picture of, and regardless of if it's a physical picture or a digital one. She could possibly teleport to pictures taken with her phone or ancient ones, but it's a lot more time-consuming. She can bring people with her, but they must be in close proximity, and must also envision themselves appearing in that place. Kimberly can only teleport in places in Farmer Hill, and the further away it is, the longer it takes to charge. Kimberly also can see the auras of people and objects that she has taken pictures long as it is within eighty meters of herself. Even if the object is moving from the point where she took the photo, she can still sense it.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ When infused with the power of the mountain, Kimberly's ability takes less time to charge, and requires less focus. In theory, she could instantly teleport somewhere. This is only a passive buff, she has a few other abilities unlocked in the process. If she focuses on a place hard enough, she is able to scry on the location through the photo. She can see everything going on in the photo in real time as if she was there. A good ability for spying, albeit situational. The ultimate ability that the mountain grants her is the ability to possibly time-travel. It's not something she can do at will and requires a ton of focus, but she may travel to the specific point where the photo was taken.
LIMITS ⫻ Kimberly can travel anywhere in Farmer Hill (She cannot teleport further than that), but the further away from her current position, the longer it'll take. She may be able to instantly teleport to a spot a few feet away from her, or take ten seconds to teleport twenty feet, but it requires a few moments of constant mental focus to teleport further. In this time, she has to stay still and focused. Or else she'll lose focus, and the charge will be "reset." This makes her vulnerable. In addition, if the photograph is damaged in any way, she'll only teleport part of the way there. There isn't a limit to how many people she can teleport, long as they envision themselves being in the location of the photo, too.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Due to the nature of her ability, there aren't too many weaknesses to her ability due to the low-powered nature of the abilities, but she has plenty of limits. There's only one weakness, and it's a mental one. Usage of her ability increases her feelings of jealousy... to homicidal levels. It may cause her to act stupidly jealous of the people around her, and may cause aggression in all of her interactions.
"Nothing to see here."
While Project: Worlds Unknown is a paranormal show, Kimberly hasn't encountered the supernatural, nor does she believe in it. The camcorder that Kimberly uses is a Sony - Handycam AX53 4K, which is what has served her well until she gets a new one. As for cameras, Kimberly has a Sony Cybershot digital camera (one of the compact models), and an instant print camera she got off Amazon. If she had to choose one, she'd chose the instant-print due to authenticity.
Kimberly also runs a business creating bootleg DVDs and delivers them to get some extra cash.
"I think everything that has happened... is because of how badly I fucked up."
Jordan doesn't appear to be the most approachable girl in Farmer Hill. Probably due to that scowl on her face, or that look of general irritation. Her voice is a bit gruff (due to all the smoking she does, but that is neither here nor there) and definitely doesn't help. Usually, she has a demeanor of someone that keeps to themselves, and that shows in how quiet she is. But, when she speaks, no one has a louder voice or presence than Jordan. Though, Jordan cannot walk with confidence, or even straight like other people her age do. Jordan walks with a heavy limp as if she received a horrible injury when she was younger. She can still walk at the same pace as everyone else, but they can tell she has a problem. Closer examination tells that Jordan makes careful and deliberate movements. Nothing sudden, or sloppy. Even as she runs, it looks like she's carefully making every single step to avoid tripping.
But, the one thing that makes her stand out in Farmer Hill so much is heritage. Jordan is African-American in a town that is primarily white. Not a native of the township, however, her "city" (Philadelphian) accent. Jordan's skin is a much lighter shade of brown, almost tan. She's what's called "light-skinned." Jordan's skin is fairly good due to all the maintenance did to it, with only a few blemishes around her body. Jordan's hair is a black color with an afro-texture, and her lips are very large and thick. Hardly disproportionate to her relatively same sized nose, with a thick nose-bridge, and nostrils. Her eyes are small, unturned, and her irises are a dark-brown color. Jordan's ears are a crescent-shape, and medium-sized.
Jordan has plenty of tattoos all over her body. The most notable one is the weave of roses on the left side of her chest, above her breast. Going down her left thigh is three roses with abnormally long stems. On her right arm, she has a large tattoo that says "In Loving Memory of Madison Brown." But, on her right leg, there is a disgusting scar. It appears to be from surgery, but it also looks like her leg has been mangled to the point of no return. It's amazing that she can still stand up on her - but Jordan is more than willing to take barely standing than no standing. She also has a few piercings. On her ears, nose, belly-button, and nipples.
Jordan's build is fairly thin and well-toned. She's in no means muscular, but she has some definition to her body. Of course, this tone appears to be fading, but Jordan still retains some body definition from before the accident. Her active metabolism, good eating habits, and exercise help her stay in shape. Because the last thing that Jordan wants is to become a land whale. Accident or no.
"I don't think I'm going to make it, I just want someone to know... I'm sorry."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Jordan, in these dark times, is realizing that she may not survive neither the Hound or the Glutton. She realizes that these may be her last moments, and wants to go to the other side without any guilt nor remorse.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Jordan's philosophy is a simple one; people have one life, and one life only. That life is too short to hold onto grudges but too long to go into it without planning. She thinks that too many people find reasons to be unhappy, rather than just making the most out of life. She believes that everyone is worthy of respect, even if they don't deserve it, and that other people should do the same. Jordan believes her character is strong because she isn't afraid to admit where she's wrong, and is honest with her emotions, and passions, above all else.
SECRETS ⫻ Jordan doesn't have any notable secrets (other than that time she ate her roomie's cake (that shit was good, though)).
DESIRES ⫻ Jordan wants to be remembered (and remembered fondly) above all else. She doesn't go out of her way to put people down and tries to support people the best she can. So, she'll be remembered for everything she does.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Jordan is heterosexual, but she feels her sexuality is fluid. Anyone that'd comfort her. There were times she kissed a girl. But, maintains that she is attracted to boys above all else.
FEARS ⫻ Jordan, as you may have expected, fears being forgotten. She looked to many people in her family's past and realized how little people knew them, and how little they accomplished. How little they were remembered. Which is why she wants to be the one person to stand out. Jordan also has a slight phobia of alcohol, after the accident that destroyed her leg. She's mostly afraid of what she'll do under the influence. Not anything that causes her to freeze in fear, but she avoids it.
REPUTATION ⫻ Jordan's reputation in Farmer Hill is relatively poor due to her skin color. Few people know her other than being "the black city girl." In Grand Ridge Academy, however, her reputation is a lot better, due to her kind attitude.
PET PEEVES ⫻ Jordan hates excessive drinking, and people who brag about drinking. She avoids those kinds of people like the plague.
QUIRKS ⫻ Jordan has a habit of constantly adjusting her appearance. Fixing her hair, adjusting her clothes, etc. Almost as if it's imperfect, and needs constant correction.
"I'm going to attone for it, in case I die."
Jordan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a relatively lower-class family. She didn't have the best upbringing but definitely made the best of it. Most importantly, she was never alone. She, not only had a big family but a knack for befriending people. She seemed to be born with a special kind of charisma. These people taught Jordan morality, and the importance of basic human decency... to a point. She definitely wasn't one to take bullying and lashed back as hard as they did. She did the best she could to befriend as many people as possible.
It wasn't long before Jordan's interest in music developed into something more. It became a passion. It started with music class at school, and then it evolved into wanting a guitar. Her parents could barely afford it, but they got it for her for her birthday. It was difficult for her to learn with no teacher, but she found every way she could. Until she knew the guitar like the back of her hand. A friend teaching her helped. As the years went by, Jordan's passion for the guitar remained. Regardless of what mood she was feeling.
Eventually, she tried singing... with mixed results.
Either way, Jordan wanted to do it for a living, even though everyone told her that it was a terrible idea, but she didn't listen. She was happy, and that was the way she was going to live. One of the people to encourage her was Madison Brown, one of the cousins she knew as long as she could remember. Madison encouraged Jordan to do whatever made her happy and was the closest link in her extended family. If there was someone Jordan would tell someone, it would be Madison.
Hitting highschool, Jordan hit it off with the "popular crowd." The kind of kids with no sense, that everyone wanted to be. All because of her personality, and attitude. She was the person who kept them in line, in a sense, while also enjoying the benefits they had to offer. Such as status, and a good time. She helped her cousin Madison get into this crowd, and that enriched the experience for Jordan.
This experience went on, Jordan felt like she was on top of the world. Until she hit graduation... and the worst day of her life took place. She and her friends went on a hardcore night of debauchery. Full of drinking, sex, and partying like it was the last day of their young lives. Jordan was driving them around, drinking like a fool. On a dare, Jordan ran a light and was hit by another car. The car was sent flying, and Jordan hit another car. The car was horribly mangled, and Jordan was impaled through the leg with a steel beam. The rest of her occupants weren't doing any better, were either badly wounded or... in the case of Madison Brown, dead. Bust her head open when the second car hit her.
Jordan didn't even get to see it, as she had passed out due to traumatic shock. She woke up in a hospital and was told what happened. What happened to Madison... and was sent into a deep descent. Jordan was catatonic for a day straight as she processed what happened. She was consumed by guilt, she felt responsible for what happened to her cousin. She took some time off from her passion to come to term with what happened. Though, her leg was badly injured, and she would never walk the same again. Hell, it took months of physical therapy to learn how to walk again. Then it took even more months of psychological therapy to come to terms with how reckless and stupid she was back then, and how it cost someone their life. She promised that she would never do something like that again.
Then she turned to the guitar to alleviate stress and remembered her goal in life. Becoming one of the best guitarists the world has to offer, and hell if she was going to let a bad leg stop her. Her parents surprised her with an acceptance letter to Grand Ridge Academy. Before shipping her off to Montana... and one of the biggest changes of pace of her life; the caping trip. Afterward, she was tormented in her dreams by a being known as the "Hound", a supposed "agent of death" that claimed that Jordan should have died back in the accident. Jordan ended up losing sleep and getting paranoid - but she ultimately participated in the story with Kimberly at her side.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"It's something I use to cope, anything helps these days."
Guitar ⫻ Jordan had that musical touch from a young age. Almost literally, as she can play the guitar like a madman. It doesn't matter what kind, but Jordan prefers the acoustic guitar.
Singing ⫻ While her singing voice isn't the best out there, she knows how to work with it. Years upon years of singing classes, and talent shows have made Jordan into a great singer. Her tone changes are great, and she never sings off key.
"... And everything froze. I thought it was just a shock kind of thing, but literally nothing moved... except for you."
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Temporal-Pausing, the ability to stop time, while being able to freely move.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Jordan ironically gets the one Abstraction that could have saved her cousin. The ability manifests in creating a temporal field around herself in a seven-meter dome. Inside this dome, everything else is frozen in place, but Jordan (and by that extent, other Awakened, as their resistance to each other's powers render them immune to Temporal pausing) are able to move freely. While everything is static, Jordan is able to manipulate the environment by touching it. However, she is unable to manipulate people, who are entirely immutable during Temporal-Pausing. Which means she cannot injure anyone inside the field. Outside the field, paused time is entirely imperceptible to normal people, they just won't notice it - but can be frozen if they enter it. Awakened can see the field, and stopped time. The duration of temporal pausing is somewhat short, around one minute give or take, before time resumes. Once time resumes, any changes that Jordan make will instantly happen. Almost as if she had teleported. However, this isn't a voluntary ability, she has to be in a state of intense stress (I.E be threatened) for it to activate - along with having to perceive the danger. It's almost like a fight or flight reaction. It has a couple minute cooldown before she can do it again.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ The mountain extends the range of the temporal field to twenty meters, which is fairly distant. In addition, the extension of the temporal field is greatly increased to five minutes. Which makes her Abstraction much more powerful. The mountain also grants the ability to voluntarily stop time... but only at a short range, and for around twenty seconds. She requires thirty seconds before she can voluntarily stop time again.
LIMITS ⫻ When she's away from the mountain; the temporal field lasts for only one minute at a time at most, and afterward it takes around five minutes before she can stop time again. Which means that there will be a gap in time before she can save herself, or someone else. Awakened are immune to its effects, and some Extra-normal beings are also resistant to her time changes. She cannot manifest the field at will, she can manifest a weaker field in the presence of the mountain.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ There aren't too many weaknesses to Jordan's ability, other than the fact that some things are outright immune to time pausing. Which means that there's some instances where her power is completely useless. In addition, she's not the most agile, because she has a bad leg, and her time stopping is sometimes the only thing that can save her.
"... I'm sorry."
Again, nothing to note.
I think she's the key for what I'm looking for - once I get it, I'm out of Farmer Hill.
I think she was on to something.
Jordan had it tough, I hopes she makes it out. She's strong.
I can't believe she was killed while I was under. I couldn't protect her... I couldnt even say goodbye.
With Aliana gone... I should stick closer to Penny.
I hope his brains keeps him alive.
Grant & Jasmine
They didn't make it... I wish I had gotten to know them better.
She's my only friend these days, I need to hold onto that. I need to keep her safe from the Hound.
I don't know... She's hiding something and I refuse to play her game until we hear about it.
Third member of the hipster group... that's what I called it? She's, like the rest of us, really in over our heads.
I wonder what she taught me about the occult will come in handy against the Glutton.
I think he's not as cool as he used to be. Honestly, I can't keep the business going.
She's so strong for holding on, I don't think she'll make it.
Weird, but she's still the only girl out here I can trust. Not Britney, not any of these kids, just her.
Soon as possible I want my fucking answers. If I don't get them... well, she better be ready to die with them.
I think we... I can't really figure out what to make of her anymore.
I get the feeling what she's after has something to do with all this.
Our support group can wait, we have to survive this thing.
"You can stop staring now. This may come as a surprise to you, but I already know I'm missing half a leg."
The most immediately noticeable thing about Paige is that when standing, she leans on a crutch held under her right arm, which she leans on heavily. The reason that she needs this is that her right leg has a prosthetic above the knee. However, this is almost impossible to find out without asking; Paige hates her disability and wears trousers long enough to hide it as often as possible. Even so, she cannot hide the effect it has on her gait or her speed, and is utterly resentful of this fact.
Paige wears a lot of white. She naturally has pale skin and eyes, so she decided to go all-in on that aesthetic, dying her naturally brown hair to a silver-grey colour. Her clothes are generally simple but tasteful, as is the little makeup she wears. While she always does her best to hide her prosthetic with what she wears, Paige is significantly more comfortable with her upper body, and prefers a t-shirt underneath an open jacket.
Paige is not an especially talkative person. This is not born out of a desire to be unpleasant, just a dislike of conversation. Paige is not impolite, but she does not tend to initiate conversations or make any effort to perpetuate them. Paige's voice does have a slight German accent, but this is picked up from her mother as she herself never lived in Germany.
In terms of build, Paige is quite thin. As hard as she tries, she doesn't get much exercise, but doesn't eat enough for that to affect her weight. She stands at a fairly medium height, but can seem a little shorter than this as a result of her gait. She has no piercings or other scars, and her only tattoo is a simple, black treble clef symbol on her collarbone, offset slightly to her left.
"Oh, that's a fun question. Most people prefer to learn by actually spending time with the person, but bluntness is cool too."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ The perfect world for Paige would see her whole again, but she recognises this is impossible - she's not delusional. Her goal is simply to be as unaffected by her disability as possible, to spit in the face of her injury and live her life as close to possible as how she did before.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ If it's not worth working for, it's not worth doing at all. Paige doesn't believe in not doing something just because it's difficult or inconvenient. She has discovered through her additional hardships in performing relatively simple tasks just how much (or little) they are worth. Most notably, Paige has tried to learn again how to walk without a crutch, going out into the fields on the edges of Farmer Hill, taking the falls, and letting inner strength carry the day.
SECRETS ⫻ Paige is not comfortable describing how she got her injury, though to a close friend, she would be more willing to talk about it. Besides that, there isn't much; Paige is generally an honest person. She doesn't mind telling people that she has the prosthetic, if they ask, but would rather not go into much detail. She hides it more from herself than other people.
DESIRES ⫻ Firstly, Paige wants to finish with university, more to keep her parents happy than anything else. After that, maybe settle down for a few years, focus on personal development. Some day, though, Paige wants to see the world, to spend a few months travelling from place to place. Of course, that will take a lot of money, which Paige doesn't have yet. In terms of family, she would quite happily never marry throughou her life, though she wouldn't be opposed to the concept if she met the right person.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Not much thought has gone into it. If asked, Paige would describe herself as bisexual, if asked, but she's never met anyone she's been particularly interested in, nor has she known of anyone being interested in her.
FEARS ⫻ Snakes creep out Paige, but it's no phobia. As for something on a grander scale, she is afraid of always being physically limited by her injury, dreaming that one day, with enough practice and effort, she could walk properly or even run. The idea that that will never happen is what scares Paige the most.
REPUTATION ⫻ A few people know Paige, or know of her. She's only been in town a few weeks, and though she doesn't go out of her way to talk to people, those who have spoken to her will have found her polite, and amiable enough, though a bit reserved.
PET PEEVES ⫻ People who sit around all day doing nothing. The worst part is that they can stand up and run around and play tennis or soccer or whatever they want, and they don't, while she can't even though she would if she could.
QUIRKS ⫻ Paige bites her lip and looks off to her right when concentrating. Not much else.
"I'm glad my future's looking brighter than my past, 'cause hell, it's pitch black back there."
Paige is the daughter of Laura and Michael Davis. Her mother grew up in Germany, but now lives in America. She met Paige's father while attending Harvard, and several years later they married. It was in Cambridge that Paige was born and grew up.
Paige had a fairly normal early childhood. She was active, had some musical talent, and while no erudite, was getting good grades at school. Her family never had to worry about money; her parents' degrees made sure of that. Everything was going absolutely fine.
When Paige was 14, she was made a victim of collateral damage as a pair of heroin addicts robbed a store to fund their addiction. A stray bullet hit her just above her right knee. By the time she recieved medical intention, the injury was badly infected, and an amputation was the only solution.
Paige's wonderfully normal start to life fell apart after that. She suffered from depression for some time. She was the victim of bullying. Her grades dropped and she couldn't do sport. She hated what had happened to her, but there was no way to fix it.
Paige dealt with her issues the way she's learned is best: she clenched her teeth and just put up with it as best she could. Of course, she never returned to her sports, but eventually, her grades came back up. She spent her new spare time on learning to play the violin, and, after some time, she also took up archery as a hobby. Eventually, she decided to leave home, move somewhere quieter. Her parents couldn't let their child miss out on higher education, and it couldn't be just any university either. Eventually, a compromise was reached: Grand Ridge Academy wasn't Ivy League, but it was good.
Paige has only recently arrived in Farmer Hill, but so far. she's preferred it to her home city.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"What? I had, like, 8 hours of sport a week on my schedule, and suddenly I had none. I had to do something."
Ambidexterity ⫻ Paige is naturally right-handed, but, needing that hand for her crutch, she had to develop skill with her left as well, and has reached almost perfect ambidexterity.
Violin ⫻ One of the ways Paige found to fill the time after her injury. Paige is very good at playing the violin, having had a lot of time by herself with which to practice.
Archery ⫻ Another skill Paige picked up trying to fill her time. Paige has spent less time on this, and her leg affects her stance, but she's far from a beginner.
"I suppose I'm lucky I didn't get, like, super speed, or something. This, I can do sitting down."
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Mental Combat, a strange Abstraction which allows Paige to battle opponents on a psychic level, each combatant draining the other's energy and eventually knocking them out.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ When Paige wishes to engage someone in mental combat, she focuses on them for a moment. Then, it is simply a battle of wills. Both combatants drain each other's energy through sheer desire for victory. Their focus will need to be absolutely perfect, so they can do very little physically during the battle, unless they are willing to risk losing. Only the combatant that is winning can choose to end the battle; the losing combatant must either turn the tide or accept the consequences. Nearby people can also bolster a side of their choice in a battle that is already taking place. In doing so, they can add their own willpower to the side they fight on. Alternatively, they might be antagonistic to both and fight as a third party, putting a large strain on all three. When a combatant is defeated, they are left unconscious and exhausted but otherwise unharmed. Normal people can't see the battle taking place, but Awakened, and anything else that might be able to sense auras, can see a strange light show of colourful energies moving between the combatants.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ Fighting mentally is much easier for Paige when close to Mount Ever Reaching. She seems to have a much larger reserve of energy, and that pool of energy feels it is being depleted more slowly while her oppoents' are more quickly. Close to the mountain, Paige could defeat two or maybe even three normal humans at once, though Awakened would still pose a significant threat.
LIMITS ⫻ The mental battlegrounds is very exhausting for Paige. The amount of combatants and the scope of the battlefield plays a part in how stressful the battle is. If the fight takes too long, Paige may pass out from exhaustion. Other than that, there's no real limit to how many people she can pull into mental combat - in addition, the Awakened are not immune to any of the effects of her abstraction.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Once mental combat begins, both parties are rendered stationary (or close to it as possible) with little awareness of the outside world. Basically, this means that Paige and her opponent are sitting ducks. The effects of losing is a bit harsher on Paige than anyone else as it takes a toll on her body and her mind. Afterwards, Paige will be tired, and suffering from a very sharp headache.
Yeah, I knew this one was coming. People always mention her when they see my leg. Not that they're wrong; Jordan understands me in a way most people never will. That's not the only reason I like her either. Jordan has a lot of inner strength, a quality I have a lot of respect for.
Kim's an odd one. She gets along with Jordan, and she seems nice enough, but I think she could do with taking things just a little more seriously sometimes.
Well, I don't actually have much idea what Penny's like, but she defended my life at great risk to her own. What kind of person would I be if I wasn't grateful for that?
I wrote here before that I was afraid of becoming a liability for the group. Apparently that's happening. I barely know Caelea, and yet she's risked her life for me twice now. I'll find a way to pay her back for that, whatever it takes.
I'm proud of her. She's taken my advice and tried to be more transparent with the rest of us, and I think it's going to help us. Given enough time, maybe we'll truly feel we can trust her.
Don't bother looking for any of these; they're the ones I noticed, so they're the ones I fixed.
”Is it normal to spend so much time in front of a mirror to end up looking this blasé?"
Rita’s mother has the body of a Greek goddess; Rita, unfortunately, takes after her father. Her brown eyes, already sunken and small to begin with, are bloodshot from a lack of sleep and an overabundance of allergies. Her fairly full lips only manage to form meager smiles on the occasion, her gap teeth that she hates always kept hidden from public in all but the most genuine of reactions. Her dark brown hair is straight and oily no matter what she does to it, with bangs that cover her thick eyebrows and the aftermath of a brutal battle with acne on her forehead from her adolescence. Her nose slants ever so slightly to the left from when she broke it, and there is a small scar underneath her chin from when she once fell off of her bike and clipped the corner of a brick. Her skin tone is fairly light, but her Greek roots do allow for her to get a rather wicked tan if she tries.
She’s a petite girl with a straight, modest build. Rita’s in fairly decent shape due to her constantly biking around town when she can, and she’d die before she admits it but she’s really proud of how her butt looks in jeans. Her clothes fit her very well, but her style is fairly conservative and has been described by one of her peers as “dad-esque”—collared shirts and cardigans paired with jeans and roughed-up white sneakers. The most risque she has ever been seen in public is capris and a polo with all but the bottom button unbuttoned. She almost never takes off the black “I <3 NY” bracelet that she wears on her right wrist, and she’s particularly fond of using vibrant hair scrunchies to contrast the drab, neutral tones of her outfits.
Rita manages to make herself always appear to be uncomfortable regardless of where she is, prone to unwarranted flinches and shrunken shoulders. Her face defaults to a pensive and distant stare, although one can truly tell when she is actually in deep thought by how intensely she is sucking in her lip. Her voice is quiet and tight, as if the act of speaking is a chore in it of itself, and an obvious Texan accent betrays her as not being a local.
”How obvious is it that I’m hopeless?"
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Let’s not pretend that Rita is more heroic than she actually is: the girl wants nothing more to survive and move back home. Turns out Texas isn’t the worst state in the union.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Life is chaos and coincidence, and the only way to get through it is to swim with the river and pray that it doesn’t rush her over a waterfall and smash her against some jagged rocks. There’s no certainty that what is true today will be tomorrow, and that sucks.
SECRETS ⫻ She keeps a journal and regularly writes poems. Somehow this deepy embarrasses her. Oh, and Rita is short for Margarita—and there’s no question about it, she was named for the drink. Her biggest secret is her Abstraction for it’s her only defense against this nightmare, and she can’t let others strip it from her.
DESIRES ⫻ In one of her more bitter moments she’d say that all she wants is to meet someone who isn’t a backbiting, selfish son of a bitch, but really she’s more looking to be accepted above anything else.
SEXUALITY ⫻ The few relationships she has had with boys always left her feeling more drained and defeated than anything. Still, she’s pretty certain that she is heterosexual, because her friendships with girls have typically made her feel even worse.
FEARS ⫻ Besides the Glutton? She actually fears the other Awakened more than anything else. Scott was manipulated by the Glutton, but he was used like a hammer. What’s to say the Glutton isn’t now using one in a subtle way?
REPUTATION ⫻ She’s the anxious, quiet girl prone to outbursts, and she fears that the others view her as a weak link.
PET PEEVES ⫻ Lying is a big one, but she truly can’t stand people talking behind another’s back. Part of it is because she feels guilty for being associated with something she disagrees with, and part of it is because she fears that they must be talking about her when she is away. She has ruined more than a few budding friendships by directly confronting people about the nasty things they have said about someone in front of the person that they had been bad mouthing.
QUIRKS ⫻ Rita has a bad case of the fidgets. She’s a knee shaker, a toe tapper, a finger drummer, a pen clicker, a coin weaver, a hair curler, and just about anything else that can keep her hands and feet busy.
”Ready to be let down?"
Dear (New) Diary,
How does a girl born in a small town in Shithole, Texas end up moving to the even smaller town of Bumfuck, Montana? Well, the short answer is she’s taking a forty-four hour long Greyhound ride to attend Grand Ridge. That’s where the girl is at right now; stuck in the aisle seat next to a man with the world’s smallest bladder and the thirstiest mouth. The long answer is people. Three people, actually. Old Diary knew all about these people, but we don’t talk to Old Diary anymore. Old Diary is dead to me. We only have eyes for New Diary.
The first person was the mother. The girl lived with the mother in 3C of Sunshine Apartments, and for as long as she can remember the girl and the mother hated each other. The mother resented the girl—if it wasn’t for her, she could land herself a good man and get out of Shithole. The girl resented the mother—if it wasn’t for her, she wouldn’t have been born in Shithole. They could’ve called it even there, but then that’d require one of them to admitting that they were at fault. Plus, the girl felt that the crimes of the mother greatly outway the crimes of not being polite to the strange men that would claim to be the mother’s friend and then break her heart a week later. See, the girl was brutally teased by the boys who told her that they had seen her mom’s tits last weekend, which was obviously untrue in fifth grade but come highschool and fake IDs to get inside the strip club it had a chance to be accurate. Girls were even worse. They’d say, “Your mom is so pretty”, which meant “So why aren’t you?”
But, worst of all, the mother did not want the girl, she just wanted her freedom. Every year she asked “So, when are ya moving out?”and every year it became clearer that the question was not tongue-in-cheek.
But the father was perhaps worse than the mother. He was fun and kind, and the girl would spend weekends with him in Corpus Christi where they’d go to the beach or ride bikes. He’d buy her ridiculously expensive gifts for her birthday and for Christmas, and every summer they’d go travel together for a week. New York City was her favorite trip. It was also her last trip with him. When the girl was fifteen he gave her the best present somebody can possibly give someone—the truth. He had been married for the last eight years and had another daughter of seven, and now he felt like she was old enough to understand why it was impossible for her to permanently live with him.
I’m sure you already guessed it, New Diary, but the girl wasn't. She still isn’t. She doubts she’d every be old enough to understand that. But, even if she couldn’t understand it, she did know what he was saying: he didn’t want the girl, he just wanted a buddy.
Then there was her friend, not boyfriend. She wanted not boyfriend to be her boyfriend for years, but the girl was too stupid to say anything until senior year. After not boyfriend had been dating her best friend for a year. At prom. In front of everyone. While drunk. It was harrowing how embarrassing the entire thing was, and the girl ran out of the prom. Now, in the movie version of this story the not boyfriend would chase after her and admit that he liked her too and then they would kiss and the credits would roll and we’d assume everything worked out. In the real life version the not boyfriend did chase after her, and he admitted he liked her, and they did kiss, and then the credits did not roll and she screwed him, and then he didn’t talk to her the next day at school. And her best friend did not talk to her at the next day of school. And her best friend’s friends did not talk to her at the next day of school.
Eventually the girl heard through the grapevine that not boyfriend didn’t want the girl; he just wanted a girl before he went to college, and she was clearly more willing to put out than the one he had.
So the girl figured, hell, if they don’t want me in Texas, then I don’t want them either. She didn’t pick Grand Ridge because it was prestigious or because of its a good school to study to become an actuary, but because it was a forty-four hour bus ride from home. The girl struck herself a deal with a private room for the summer on Airbnb and hopped on a bus the week after she graduated. She was even invited by her future roommate to go on a camping trip with some other students. So, screw it, it’s time to shed her wallflower petals and turn a new leaf.
She really hopes this isn’t going to be some hazing bullshit.
A girl named Margarita
P.S. thirty times. He went to the bathroom thirty times in forty-four hours
Since writing that life hasn’t gone so great for Rita. Her chance at reinventing herself was screwed when a student decided to go all Jason Voorhees during a camp trip. She awakened and soon realized her Abstraction after getting in an argument with Claire at school, before she practiced and learned the limitations of her ability with her only friend, Martin. Since then she has kept in the background and stayed with the group out of fear of Scott Reese, although she began to use her Abstraction more and more to peel the truth out of the others. Everything came to a head when they went to the abandoned school, and when she fled from the Glutton she got in a confrontation with Billy—saved only by the interference of Rien.
SKILLS & TALENTS
”Should I put these on my résumé?"
Sewing ⫻ Rita can’t afford to purchase new clothes, so being able to patch up old outfits and properly fit thrift shop hauls is essential.
Cycling ⫻ She rides her bike almost every single day. Mostly it’s out of necessity—she doesn’t have a car—but she enjoys the exercise and finds it fun to ride. She even knows a few minor tricks that only result in her eating asphalt one out of every four times.
"Can I ask you something?"
SIGIL & LOCATION ⫻ Four black lines circle the fingers on her left hand and then travel down her palm before terminating at the bend in her arm.
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Question Master, the ability to compel someone to tell the truth (and other fun things) by simply asking a question.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻Question Master allows Rita to expel her doubt about others. Whenever she is in a conversation with someone that person is compelled to answer any of the questions she asks with what they believe to be the truth. This is not an ability she can will on or off: every single question she asks forces the answerer to give the truth if they heard her. The ability can only be focused on one individual at a time, directed through her maintaining eye contact on the target—so people around the corner who hear the question don’t feel obligated to chime in too. If she wants to let someone answer uninfluenced, she could always just avoid looking at them.
Her questions can range from narrow to broad, but the more specific or direct ones tend to wield better results as a person is compelled only to answer the question, not to compulsively tell the truth about every single thing they are keeping a secret. For example, asking if someone was lying would only get them to say yes or no, while asking what someone was lying about would get them to divulge a bit more information. Furthermore, asking someone about everything they lied about would result in them going down a laundry list of how far back they could remember. So, it’s best to be thoughtful in her probing.
The Blind cannot sense that she is making them answer her truthfully. However, they are fully aware of the words coming out of their mouths after they finish telling the truth. If they had intended to tell the truth than no harm no foul, but if they had intended to lie then they completely think that they just had a pretty harrowing slip of the tongue. This means that is rare for someone to sit down with Rita and air out all of their dirty laundry. After all, people tend to try to duck out of conversations pretty quickly once it gets awkward.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ She puts the master part into Question Master. Rita’s questions take on a much stronger influence in regards to the Blind. They become suggestions that people are compelled to follow, although just because she suggests someone does something it does not necessarily mean that they will succeed in whatever the act is. She still has to say it in a question like, “Why don’t you give me twenty dollars?” for it to take effect, but the action does not have to be immediate. For example, she could ask someone if they would leave town next Saturday and they would have to. Once a suggestion is fulfilled the person is no longer compelled to follow it, so to use the previous example the moment they left town on that Saturday they could just as well immediately head right back into it.
LIMITS ⫻ Rita's abstraction suffers from two obvious limits; sound and eye contact. If nobody can hear her, they are immune. Same goes for those who aren't making eye contact with her. Rita's abstraction is interesting when it comes to other Awakened, they are resistant to it, but not completely immune. An Awakened that is unaware of her abstraction may find themselves unintentionally answering her questions, but they feel a psychic pull in their skull telling them that something is wrong. If they find out her Abstraction, then they'll be able to resist her abstraction.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Rita's abstraction, not the strongest, has a peculiar weakness; she finds it difficult to lie herself. She unconsciously tells the truth even when it's foolish to do so, unless she tries extremely hard to lie - even then it comes out strained and forced.
"Seriously, aren’t you tired of asking questions?"
roses are red, violets are blue. actually no, that’s not quiet true, roses can be red, but also white and pink and orange, while violets are just violet, obviously.
i guess like everything else, they lied about that, too.
"Your mom thinks I’m handsome. And she’s makes a fantastic breakfast, too, champ."
Billy looks like he could be attractive if he put in the effort, but he never felt the need to really go out of his way to look good. He’s tall, with lanky limbs like a basketball player, but has the athletic build of someone who has never lifted a dumbbell in their life. His dark blonde hair is cut in a popular short on sides, long on top style and kept messy. Not in the “spent fifteen minutes trying to look like I got out of bed” messy, but the “yeah, I just actually got out of bed and thought this would work” messy. His eyes are blue and have the glossy look to them of someone who is perpetually having an allergic reaction, stoned, or both. His skin is lightly tanned and blemished with moles, but it is in good condition. He’s trying (and failing) to pull off a wispy beard. There’s a large tattoo that says “Shrug Life” in thick , cursive script spanning between his shoulder blades, and a little triforce on his left wrist.
His clothes fit him loosely, and he dresses almost exclusively in schlocky, ironic tees and khaki shorts or blue jeans. Tan, worn down work boots are his go to pair of kicks. When it gets colder he busts out the heavy flannels and the trapper hat, but to see him in an actual winter coat is a rarity. He wears a thick pair of black glasses that he’d be next to blind without—the idea of something going into his eyes spooks him, so contacts and lasik are a no-go. He’s the kind of guy that carries around a messenger bag. It’s made of blue canvas, littered with patches and stickers from bands he hasn’t seen live, and the butt of many jokes.
Billy’s tall but he slouches so much that nobody would ever describe him as such. He moves to the beat of his own drum, which happens to never be playing anything faster than a funeral dirge. His lack of a sense of urgency carries through to his deep voice. It is slow and clear, so he’s easy to understand, but it has that stereotypical stoner vibe to it as well, man.
”Bro, I’m totally good in the brain department. Maybe it’s everyone else that is crazy, though. Or what if we were all the figment of some crazy guy’s imagination. Now that would be crazy, dog."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Billy wanted to become a critic, but with the world potentially going to hell why not just embrace the chaos and have a little fun with it? Everyone is so uptight; as long as he lives it doesn’t matter to him.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Life is tough, but ultimately it is good. Things aren’t always as bad as they seem, and with every door that closes a window opens. So relax, indulge yourself a bit, have some fun while you’re young, and know that people can bounce back from just damn near anything. There’s nothing more narcissistic than being a worrier.
SECRETS ⫻ Billy’s a coward; if he puts someone before himself, it’s only because others are watching.
DESIRES ⫻ The suburban dream was a nice want, but seems impossible now. He’ll settle on instant gratification now that the world has been turned upside down.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Heterosexual, but Candyland has more game than he does.
FEARS ⫻ Pain, or rather, acknowledging things that are painful. Better to be deluded than disenchanted.
REPUTATION ⫻ Billy is known to be unreliable. There are moments where he helps, but often only after he has dragged his feet and bitched about it for way too long.
PET PEEVES ⫻ Pretentiousness. Probably because it makes him realize that, at the end of the day, he’s also an ostentatious jerk.
QUIRKS ⫻ Billy tends to say dude a lot, bro. Even if that dude is a chick, man. It’s almost as if he’s bad with names, son, and just inserts whatever he feels like, buddy. Also, like his sister, he seems to not know how to shut up, although he is decisively less confrontational than her.
”Oh, yeah, boss, it was real dark and mysterious. Certainly didn’t spend my entire life in a small town trying not to die from boredom or anything like that."
Billy was born in Farmer Hill, and as far as he cares he’d be fine with dying in Farmer Hill as long as they have fast internet and access to a VPN. His dad runs Lawson’s Body Shop, a car repair place that was open by his grandfather decades ago, while his mom works at a flower shop to get away from the boys in the garage. Billy is the oldest of three. He has a sister, Penny, that is two years younger than him and a brother, Henry, that was five years younger than him. He fought a lot with Penny while they were growing up, and Henry was always the tagalong little brother.
Most of Billy’s youth was spent playing with friends and trying to avoid putting in any effort at school. He was a pretty normal, if geeky, kid, preferring video games and movies over hockey and tag. He didn’t get great grades, but he did good enough to fly under radar. He was one of the first boys to hit his growth spurt, so he was always too tall to be picked on. His love life was nonexistent, but then again so was the case for most of his friends so it was never really a point of concern. He smoked weed for the first time when he was fourteen and kept that shit hidden from his parents for an entire seventy-two hours. When he was sixteen he started helping his dad out at the shop, and when he was seventeen his brother disappeared.
Alright, that last one might be a bit atypical, if not for it being Farmer Hill. The last time anyone saw Henry he was walking home from school. Obviously, his family freaked out, as did he, and the police did their investigation. Henry was never found, and they ruled that he had runaway—the preteen had been getting bullied at school. The Lawson’s hired a private detective to try and find Henry, but all that came their way was zero leads and plenty of bills. Eventually they too, like the rest of the town, moved on. Billy’s mother and father got rid of any pictures of Henry and pretended like he never existed, while Billy, after a grieving period, came to the acceptance that his brother was most likely dead than in hiding. Only Penny was unable to move on, but even she knew not to mention her little brother around her parents.
Due to being tied up in the investigation, Billy entered Grand Ridge a year late to study film, but he quickly fell into the routine college experience of barely going to class, smoking weed, drinking warm PBR, and trying too hard to get laid. For all anyone can tell, he seemed as if the year off had been enough time for him to recuperate. Heavy self-medication helps, too, and Billy almost never starts a day off without a proper wake and bake. Now he’s got one more semester to go before he’s done with the academy, and he intends to go out having fun.
Unfortunately, his intentions were more literal than he had planned. After almost being killed at the sleepaway camp, Billy went back to his old self before witnessing Scott Reese murdering one of their fellow campers back in town. During the Awakened assembly he warned others about this, and tagged along to search Reid’s house with the others. While under assault from Sharon’s bugs he was able to communicate mentally with his sister, Penny, and together they helped the group survive that situation. However, when he witnessed the Glutton at the old school for the first time, Billy gave into his terror, abandoned Rien with the unconscious Maddie that they were saving, and fled into the woods surrounding the school, only to find out that they had been cut off by a living wall. He literally ran into Rita and—as a joke, or so he claimed—suggested that they test the wall with a sacrifice. Rien came along at this time and they suggested trying it with an animal they created, which Billy was all too quick to throw into the wall.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"Kid, I got a backup plan if Ebert doesn’t respond to my emails."
Gaming ⫻ There was a period when Billy thought he was going to become a pro gamer. That was when he was thirteen and before his mom took away his system for a year because she got tired of hearing him scream obscenities in the middle of the night. Now he has to live with the small victory of being the Soul Calibur II champion over at Arcade Blues. Bastard only plays Maxi.
Cars ⫻ Repair, specifically. Dad’s a mechanic, so Billy’s been helping him with that kind of thing since he could walk. He’s currently restoring a 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit. He’s been restoring that damn car for the last two years. It doesn’t need as much work as he claims that it does.
"Okay baby, it’s naptime."
SIGIL & LOCATION ⫻ A spiral on his upper right arm.
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Daydream, the ability to to lull someone into a sleep-like state.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Billy’s abstraction allows him to finally get other people to stop stressing out so much and take a break. It just happens that his way of getting people to relax is by hypnotizing them and forcing them into a dreamstate while their body (literally) falls unconscious. Billy can cause a person to fall asleep within a 30 meter range, and he can keep them asleep for as long as he is actively focusing on them. If he leaves the range or loses focus his target will groggily wake up a few seconds later. He can only make one person fall asleep at a time, and an intense of enough pain will force them awake.
People trapped in the daydream actually do have dreams, although they are influenced by their emotions and state of mind—Billy has no control over them. People who are primarily experiencing a positive emotion, such as happy or peaceful, will have nice, pleasant dreams like spending time with loved ones, flying, going to places they’ve always wanted to visit, and so on. Neutral emotions, like boredom, tend to have mundane dreams, like going to school, work, or dreaming that you’re waking up. Negative emotions, like sadness or anger, tend towards more towards extreme dreams or even nightmares, often tortuous or violent in nature.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ As well as being able to keep one person asleep, Billy is able to channel a dreamscape around himself—anyone that comes within a 3 meter range of his physical body will immediately fall asleep. Once he is no longer in range, they will again awake a few seconds later.
LIMITS ⫻ In order to make someone fall asleep, Billy requires active knowledge of where the person is. Which means that he can't just make somebody sneaking up on him fall asleep. It works best when they're in his line of sight, as well. He also cannot make somebody instantly fall asleep - it takes a few minutes (five at most) before they fall asleep. He can only use his abstraction on one person at a time, and the minute he stops using it on them they'll quickly wake up. The Awakened are not immune to his abstraction, but they are resistant - it takes three times as long (fifteen minutes) before they fall asleep. In addition, they'll be immediately made aware of his interference the moment he uses his abstraction on them.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Billy also gets induced in a serene state by using his abstraction. He doesn't quite get put to sleep, but he's noticeably slower, and more tired after utilizing his abstraction. Sloth-like would be a good word.
"Nah, I think we’re good bro."
Definitely not repressing anything in regards to his missing brother. Nope.
"I’m not going to say that I’m surrounded by idiots, because the idiots wouldn’t understand that the idiots I am referring to are them. That’s what makes them an idiot."
“Oh, yeah, it’s totally what’s on the inside that counts. Totally. I mean, because I’m pretty sure it’s DNA that determines how hot someone is, and the entire continuation of the human race is dependent on us being attracted to one another so that we can reproduce. So, yeah, definitely, it’s what’s below the skin that matters. Christ, seriously?"
Penny’s actual appearance is hidden beneath a veil of makeups and creams. Her skin is made a light tan with spray and concealer. Her hair is dyed a lighter blond than her natural color, and waves are constructed with hot curlers and precious hours wasted in front of the mirror. Her eyebrows are meticulously plucked, her lashes are curled, and her blue eyes are lined. Her nose is small, and her lips, thinner than she would wish, are kept glossy and hide a big, Invisalign smile. Her chin is pointed, and her ears are pierced. Penny has a slender build; she’s more like the fields of Kansas than the hills of Montana. She doesn’t really work out much (and it shows). Seemingly her frame is kept small through cigarettes and diet soda serving as meal supplements. Her right arm is a colorful sleeve of flowery tattoos and a bright wand tattoo is on her inner left forearm.
Penny’s outfits varies—her closet is stuffed to the brim with clothing—but she favors colorful, bold dresses and skirts whenever she can get away with them, often paired with a leather or jean jacket weather permitting. She has another closet dedicated to knee-high boots that cover varies shades of brown, black, and gray. She’s particularly fond of a pair of knock-off Ray Ban aviators and almost never leaves home without them; even at night they can be seen pushed up to the top of her head like a makeshift headband.
She has a severe case of resting bitch face, and walks as if she is always in a rush. Her voice is high pitched, nearly grating, and somehow always manages to sound as if she is exasperated. She tends to stand askew with her hip jutted out and her arms crossed over her chest, perhaps in some subconscious way to make herself appear more curvy than she is. Also, it should be noted that since the Glutton, she has stopped putting as much effort in dolling herself up.
"I’m scared. Of course I’m scared. You’d have to be insane not to be scared. That doesn’t mean I’m going to give up on myself or the others."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ She wants to find out what happened to her little brother, but more than anything she wants to take down the Glutton and protect Farmer’s Hill.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ She thinks Private Joker put it best, “I’m in a world of shit. Yes. But I alive. And I am not afraid.”
SECRETS ⫻ Penny has begun to understand why she tries to push everyone away, and wants to stop.
DESIRES ⫻ Justice. She cannot accept the fact that Henry, her younger brother, just “ran away”, and she holds a personal grudge against the police in charge of the half-assed investigation. Likewise, she refuses to just let some monster run rampant on her town unchecked.
SEXUALITY ⫻ She’s straight and, like most kids raised in extremely Christian families, believes that sex is very naughty and a sin, which is part of the reason why it is so hot. Love, however, is a completely different subject, fitting somewhere in the realms of elves and dragons.
FEARS ⫻ Apathy. It truly terrifies her at what horrible things can occur when people stop giving a shit, and she prays that she never lets herself become that way. She is also afraid of being too weak to stop the Glutton.
REPUTATION ⫻ Oh, it’s not really good. Being a jerk to just about anyone tends to make people not view you in the best of lights, oddly enough. Plus, her distrust and straight out contempt of authority figures, not to mention her inability to to leave the disappearances of Farmer Hill alone, has painted a fairly large scarlet letter on her chest. She hopes that the other Awakened can see that she is seriously trying to help stop things, at the very least.
PET PEEVES ⫻ Fake pleasantries. She cannot wrap the idea around her head why people would offer that they should hang sometime when they hardly even talked in high school, and why bother asking someone how they are doing if what is really meant to be said is that you see that they happened to have gone to the bathroom at the same time as you.
QUIRKS ⫻ She’s loquacious. Especially when it comes to talkin’ shit.
"Aw, geez, I can’t think of a single reason why I act up like this. Golly, if only there was one small, minor event that may have really gotten under my skin and made me really see how useless others could be. I just, I just can’t think of any. Wow. Guess I’m just being too emotional again. How stupid of me."
Detentions and visits to the “Princi-PAL” were a daily routine for Penny in her formative years. The middle child of two working parents, she was the prototypical example of someone starved for attention, and she seeked it in the form of distracting her classmates and disrupting her teachers. In junior high she attached herself to the popular crowd yet never quite carved her way into the circle, becoming the girl who would hear about the parties they had over the weekend the following Monday while sitting with them at lunch. By high school she was determined to finally make her breakthrough, which she would succeed by using expensive clothing, fancy makeup, and acting with disdain towards everything. If experience taught her anything, people were desperate to be liked by those who hated them.
And it kind of worked for the first two years of high school. She went through all of the motions that she assumed made girls popular: cheerleader, drinking, senior boyfriend, bullying, general bitchiness, etc. She was even able to use her older brother Billy to win her brownie points with the older kids by stealing his actual pot brownies to give out. And then her little brother Henry disappeared, and with it so did the little delusion she was living. That was four years ago.
She was always close to her little brother, primarily because he was her only real friend pre-high school and she was stuck babysitting him post-ninth grade. They used to walk home together, but at her insistence they were exclusively to walk separate once she entered highschool cause no way could someone adult like her, like, be seen walking with a dweeby kid, gawd. And it was during one of Henry’s lonely walks home that he disappeared, and it was because of this that the police questioned her, and her family blamed her, and her friends whispered about her. What a shit sister, right? Got her own brother killed because she wanted to look cool.
But...she could deal with that. It wasn’t until the police had declared Henry missing with no leads and they, and the town, and her friends, and her family, stopped talking about her missing brother and pretended like everything was hunky dory that things were flipped on their head. Penny couldn’t possibly understand how anyone could be satisfied with the results of the investigation, and the more people told her that she just let it go and move on the more bitter and jaded she grew. By junior year she stopped trying to fit in, becoming too outspoken and volatile to sit with the cool kids anymore, who had grown tired of her one-woman crusade against the incompetence of Henry’s investigation.
Billy told her one day that she had become an asshole. And she was okay with it. If being one meant that the lazy police in Farmer Hill got put on blast and actually did their job, then good. If being one meant that her parents open their damn eyes, then good. If being one meant that her dumbass brother Billy stopped doing drugs and started asking questions with her, then good. And if being an asshole meant that she alienated everyone in this garbage little town and made them hate her, then great—because she had been wrong. People didn’t give a shit about those that hated them. No, people gave a shit about those that they hated. And if they thought of her, her little brother wouldn’t be too far from their mind.
But she’s still going to school because once she cracks this thing open, she’s getting the hell outta town. Although, she’s not budging until she takes care of this new nightmare. Once Scott Reese began to kill kids, Penny started a one-woman crusade against him. She honed her Abstraction after the death camp, and often pushed herself to the limits where her body would start to suffer. With Lynette and Aliana, the three continued to test their Abstractions. When she was shown a vision of Scott Reese as he headed to attack more survivors Penny didn’t even bother to think; she immediately went after him in an attempt to stop him and save the others. Her Abstraction proved to be ineffective against him, but Claire and Justin arrived in time to drive him off. She stuck with the group when they went to Reid’s house and was able to communicate with Billy mentally to help guide them through Sharon’s Awakening. She helped the others takedown Scott Reese at the old school, only to realize how powerless she was when they squared off against the Glutton.
SKILLS & TALENTS
”Pass isn’t an option for this one, is it? Sure, sure, everyone is a special snowflake, but by the end of the day you’re still being pushed off the street by a snowplow and turned into a pile of dirty snow that will slowly melt in the sun and drain into the sewers to mix with piss and shit. What I’m trying to say is that it doesn’t matter that the most impressive thing I’ve ever done with my time was learn how to tie a cherry stem into a knot."
[Arguing] ⫻ There’s something remarkable about someone that’s so stubborn that they could convince someone that their blue shirt was red just by unrelentingly unleashing a torrent of words their way until they simply breakdown and give up.
[Double-jointed] ⫻ The useless ability to freak people out by bending joints far beyond where they should bend. Good for winning bets and pretending to be that dead girl from the Ring for Halloween.
"My mom keeps saying that my bad attitude pushes people away. I wonder if she saw this coming."
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Repulsion, the ability to telekinetically force people and things away from her body.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Penny can force almost anything that enters a five foot radius around her to rapidly move away from her. Thing reflect back in a straight line from her until the effects of gravity or other interference stops them. This means that if she repulses something that is on the ground, it will only hit things that are level with the ground and the moment it hits something with enough force it will stop. She’s only capable of forcing objects that have a weight equal to or less than twice her weight away from her, so she’ll lose any match of chicken that she plays against a speeding car.
The velocity and distance at which an object blasts away from her is dependent upon its size; the lighter an object is, the further and faster it travels. Small objects (less than a pound) likes coins, paper clips, pens, and etcetera, act almost like a weak 9mm bullet, traveling fast enough to penetrate skin, clothing, thin walls, doors, and glass. Medium objects (more than a pound, but less than fifty) like computer monitors, baseballs, bricks, and so on only go about 30 meters before quickly succumbing to gravity, and tend to only have enough force to dent metal, knock the wind out of someone, and possibly fracture or break bones. Large objects (more than fifty, less than her peak) like desks, bags of cement, and some people can be sent back 3 meters. The force is about as strong as an incredibly fit person’s push, so it’s largely only effective at moving large things out of her way, bracing doors, or keeping people forced against walls.
There isn’t a limit to how many objects she can force away from her at once, but she does have to direct the repulsions. This means that she has to know an object is coming at her or within her range for her to repulse it, and she actively has to focus her mind to push it away. Therefore, she isn’t constantly blowing the dirt and trash at her feet away (unless she consciously decides to), nor is she able to push away an incoming projectile if she doesn’t know that it was fired at her in the first place.
Penny’s Abstraction has a secondary effect that allows her to sense the mass, velocity, and trajectory of any moving object that enters her field of view, even if it were moving faster than her naked eye could see. This gives her enough time to react to incoming objects and determine if her ability can affect it. In a way, it acts as a limited danger sense, however the effect is an information overload that can be detrimental to her mental and physical health. After using it for five minutes she starts to experience splitting migraines, nosebleeds, and vision loss, and if she goes with it on for longer than ten she will start to experience blackouts. If she toggles it off before the five minute mark she can recuperate fairly well, but there is a cool down that is directly correspondent to how long she used it for, meaning that if she was channeling her secondary vision for three minutes she would have to wait three minutes before using it again. Once she goes beyond the five minute mark the cool down greatly compounds, tripling once it hits five and doubling itself every minute after that.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ Penny is able to assign an attraction to any object that is also within the presence of the mountain, meaning that objects she repulses will no longer travel in a straight line but instead change their trajectory towards an item or person of her choosing (again, she has to be aware of their presence). The basic limits of her range still apply, and her “heatseekers” are rather dumb—they will try to take the most direct path to the target, regardless of objects in its way.
LIMITS ⫻ Repulsion has a much weaker potency on the Awakened, and thus, is much less effective on them. They can easily resist the push, but are not entirely immune to it. In addition, Penny can only manipulate objects that are within five feet of herself, otherwise it's out of her hands. Her Abstraction is completely useless against objects that are grounded, or people with strength-based abilities.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ The Abstraction is connected with her mind, and causes strain. The usual psychic-nosebleeds, but it can also cause intense headaches, blurred vision, and memory-loss if overused. The Abstraction also requires care, as Penny's ability is automatic, and she can accidentally hit herself (or someone else) if she isn't careful.
"I think I’m all talked out."
She went out at least once a week looking for any clues in regards to her missing brother.
Dear Diary— He was my one friend. I miss him.
Dear Diary—Is it wrong that I don’t feel bad that she is gone?
Dear Diary— I don’t know what his intentions are, but I know they are not good. I will never let myself be alone with him ever again.
Dear Diary— She saved me but I do not trust her brother and they have a strange connection. It might be best to avoid her, too.
Dear Diary— I feel like she is trying to see through me, and I know she knows more than she lets on. Whatever I do, I can’t let her find out about my Abstraction.
Dear Diary— I’m beginning to see a lot of myself in Tuyen. She was friends with Martin; maybe I should try and talk to her more.
Dear Diary— Thank You Thank You Thank You!
I can’t let her know that Henry is dead; which is gonna be hard now that we can telepathically speak to one another.
Why can’t the Glutton kill an ugly girl?
Guess I don’t have to worry about being nice to him.
She's pretty cool for a hipster, and I'm actually kind of obsessed with her show. Plus, who else is gonna supply with cheap, kitschy horror movies?
Man, I’m gonna miss her. She was totally my best chance at getting laid.
Is it weird that we've lived in the same town our entire life and still can't manage to have a conversation without it killing itself with a bullet to the head? I just don't get it, dude.
Oh, I forgot about her.
They’re pretty cool. Hopefully, they don’t misconstrue what they saw...
He sucks because he's family. He'd suck if he wasn't family, too, but the fact that I have to deal with him more since we're blood related is the absolute pits. He sucks even more because he always tries to pretend that things are fine when they aren’t. What a jerk.
I wish I had been a better friend to her.
I can’t believe she was killed. Listen, I know we didn’t get along and, hell, I even hated her because she was a total bitch, but I didn’t want her to die. Jesus Christ, I didn’t want her to die. She was the toughest out of all of us, and the Glutton tore her apart like a ragdoll.
We were friends. We aren’t friends. If she doesn’t start spilling what she knows, then we’ll be enemies. Everybody that has died so far is on her hands because of her fucking secrets. She needs to own up to that.
Keep this a secret between the two of us, but I really do enjoy spending time with Lynette. Just...it's really nice to meet someone else who doesn't give a shit about what other people think, and if she knew I felt that way I feel like it would weird her out considering, well, it'd be kind of hypocritical right? Not like I'm trying to impress her or anything, it's just that she and Aliana are like the only people in this town that are cool. I feel like when I'm with them that I'm indestructible. God, that sounds lame.
It was weird being appreciated by someone for once. Okay, actually, it was uncomfortable being appreciated by someone for once. Still, if everything wasn’t as crazy as it was, I wouldn’t mind getting to know her better. She seems genuine.
He’s always there to help whenever there is a fight, but he was Claire’s buddy so we could never really talk. Now that’s she gone...
For a bumblebutt, he sure is helpful. Just don’t let him know that I think that; he’d probably let it go to his head and get all weirder than he normally is.
"I can't ignore everything that's going on, not like I used to."
[ 18 | 5’4” | DutchThey/them | 112lb ]
"Yeah, my hair isn’t naturally this colour, isn’t that pretty obvious?"
Marijn, or Rien (pronounce Reen) as they generally go by, is pretty average in a lot of ways. They stand at a fairly average height with a fairly average weight and blue. They’ve got a very androgynous look to them; slight curves, but nothing special. It’s something easily fixed by a binder if they want to. Most of the time they don’t bother – people struggle to figure out what their gender is by appearance anyway (which is what they aim for). They’re pretty unnoticeable, honestly, which is added to by the lazy smile that’s almost permanently stuck to their lips.
In a contrast to their rest of their appearance Rien’s hair is the kind of thing that stands out. Dyed bright blue (like in your face bright), it’s obviously not their natural colour. Naturally their hair is properly blonde – which only makes it all the easier to dye. It’s rare that Rien’s lets their hair become its natural colour. They don’t really have much reason for this outside of liking how it looks. It’s incredibly curly natural and they just let it stay like that. They keep it relatively short with the fringe cut so it just doesn’t fall in front of their eyes.
Their eyes are also blue and quite a vivid shade, but not unnaturally so like the air. Their skin is fair verging on far too white. They just can’t seem to get a tan no matter how hard they try though they do have a sprinkling of freckles across their face. Rien has a fairly slim face, with a smooth jawline. Their nose sits evenly between their eyes, a bit on the large side (in their opinion).
As said previously, their body is pretty flat. It’s not particularly feminine or masculine – rather somewhere in between. This is added to by the baggy shirts they wear, topped off with jeans and denim jackets. Their not super fashionable but they do put in some effort. They’re almost always found wearing some kind of hat – probably a black beanie. Rien also has a fair few tattoos. One of the more predominant ones is a circuit board design going down the majority of their left arm. They’ve also got one on their chest (roughly above their heart) of a treble clef, with the name Katja Driessen written through it and ‘I still hear your music’ written below it in Dutch. Apart from tattoos their skin is relatively unmarked by scars.
"I don't think I can be as carefree as I used to be."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Rien’s goal is to get to a point where they live a comfortable life, probably working in computing or something. But honestly they don’t really have a solid goal in life.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Rien’s outlook on life is to live it without caring for what other people think, without putting too much effort into it. They think it’s better to just not give a fuck rather than make a big deal out of anything. They also think that getting too close to people will just get your hurt and it’s better just to look out for yourself.
SECRETS ⫻ With a very not caring attitude Rien has few secrets. Their biggest one is something pretty minor to other people, but probably the fact that they actually try very hard at and enjoy their subject – computing. They don’t want other people knowing they actually put effort into anything. They also don’t like talking about their family, but they don’t make much of an effort to hide it.
DESIRES ⫻ Rien just wants to live life as carefree as possible, enjoying their time. Whether that is playing video games at home or getting drunk at parties it doesn’t matter as long as they have a good time.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Pansexual. Rien doesn’t particularly care about gender when it comes to dating.
FEARS ⫻ Rien fears losing anyone that they get close to, so they just don’t get close to anyone. They also fear disappointing their twin sister and the wishes she had for them.
REPUTATION ⫻ Though they’ve only been in town for a couple of years Rien’s reputation is pretty much of someone who is lazy, carefree and occasionally makes trouble. They’re not particularly looked upon fondly by those of the older generation (what with being so open about their gender and sexuality) but have a decent reputation at the academy.
PET PEEVES ⫻ People who butt into other people’s business or are too full of themselves and thus try to push their opinions onto other people.
QUIRKS ⫻ Rien shrugs a lot, especially in the middle of conversations even where there is no need to.
"I feel like my past is coming back up again, with a risk of repeating. I want to avoid that and not lose someone again."
Marijn grew up in the Netherlands, predominantly in the city of Utrecht. They were born to a single mother and with a slightly younger twin sister, Katja. Their mother passed away when they were both quite young, too young to be properly affected by it, from illness – she had always been poorly. The two were put into foster care and jumped between families. They always managed to stick together and as a result had a close bond.
At ten Rien and their sister were adopted by a relatively young couple who could not have children of their own. The two flourished under proper parents, with Katja especially growing attached. They were both very artistic and would often sketch or paint together. Rien even took up an instrument so their sister wouldn’t be alone in learning the violin – though they much preferred sketching.
Growing older Katja got more and more sickly, before getting diagnosed with a degenerative disease and given only a few years to live. This, unsurprisingly, hit Rien hard. They really counted Katja as their only friend or family – so what would they do when they lost her.
It was at the age of fifteen, just a few weeks after their birthday, that Katja passed away. Rien tried to continue living normally – that’s what their sister would have wanted after all. But it was difficult to draw without her there and to pretend to care about anything anymore. So they just didn’t, deciding that growing attached would only get them hurt. They stopped doing traditional art in favour of digital, because it wasn’t quite as painful, and discovered their skill at computer science – throwing themselves into it.
Their adopted parents decided it would be best to start fresh in the hope that it would help. They entirely upped and moved country, all the way to USA and Farmer Hill. It was easier for Rien there, to pretend things hadn’t happened and to just live their life. They worked hard, though, to get accepted into Grand Ridge Academy as they graduated – and got a place to attend studying Computing Science.
After the camping trip that went wrong, Rien was as shaken as the rest of them – and came out of it able to bring their drawings to life. They tagged along with the others while trying to figure out what was going on but ultimately didn’t really contribute. They did stop Billy from (maybe?) throwing Rita into the wall, providing a drawn animal instead.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"Oh yeah, I'm sure drawing will be a big help now."
Computing Science ⫻ Rien is good with computers, but especially focusing in software – they can program in a few different language quite well (Java, Python, C, HTML/CSS mostly). They do video game programming a lot but also for more practical things, making some money off designing websites for other people. They can also do a bit of low level (assembly) code.
Art ⫻ Rien is very talented at art. She used to excel in traditional art, especially pencil sketches and oil paintings but hasn't done that for a while. Instead she now specialises in digital art using the graphics tablet she has for her computer.
Dutch ⫻ Rien is fluent in Dutch, as it's their first language. They speak it better than they do English and it's the language they use when at home with their adoptive parents. Along with this they speak a bit of German, enough to get by.
"Just one more reason for me to not want to draw anymore..."
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Artistic Animation, the ability to create things from drawings.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Animation is maybe not the best way to describe it, because Rien cannot really create living things (normally). If Rien draws some kind of object and focuses on it they can essentially make it come out of the picture / create it. It’s created exactly as it was drawn (so black and white comes out black and white). It’s also the size that is was drawn on that paper, so if Rien draws a tiny mug they’ll get one just like it. Unsurprisingly the abstraction manifested from their love (or former love) of art.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ In the presence of the mountain the first thing enhanced is the size of the things Rien can make. They’re not limited to the size of the paper, but can rather make things bigger than how they were drawn. They can also actually draw and bring into the world living beings (as long as they actually exist) – so they could draw a plant and bring it to life, or a cat.
LIMITS ⫻ In other for Rien to manifest an object out of art, they physically have to reach into the painting and pull it out, all while focusing on it. Almost like they were pulling something from another world. Which can make pulling an object out on the fly difficult, as they can't just rip it out. Or they'll damage the painting. The only way they can manifest from a distance is in the presence of the mountain (around eight meters). Once manifested, the object has all the properties of it's real life counterpart (A sword would be hard and sharp, water would flow around and be wet,). So by all means, it's "real." Which means it can be destroyed by any other means, and it may not be that useful to manifest. Though, Rien has to draw the object at least somewhat realistically - or it'll crumble to pieces upon being manifested.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Manifesting art drains the "color" out of Rien. In a literal and metaphorical sense. They'll literally start to lose the color out of their body and clothes until they are black and white. On the other sense, they'll gradually begin to lose their emotions, and ability to feel anything pleasurable. In the most extreme cases, they'll be a hollow, emotionless, husk, that cannot taste, smell, or feel anything good. In addition, water is the primary counter to their manifestations. If exposed to water, they'll gradually lose shape and then fall apart. Getting submerged would completely destroy them.

"You think I look weird? You looking for a fight, huh?"
First noticeable thing about Caelea is that she's short. There are people that are shorter, sure, but not very many. She pretends not to care about this - and honestly she doesn't, unless someone makes a comment about it. Then she'll make a big deal about it. But that'd happen if someone made fun of her for anything else. It's obvious by her body that's she's quite fit, with well toned arms and legs. She's slim with little extra weight - she exercises too often and eats too little for that.
Aside from the fact that she's short, adding to Caelea being easily identified is the fact that she's albino. This means that everything about her it very pale. It gives her a certain ethereality to her appearance which is only added to by the fact that she's pretty aloof. Her hair is such a light blonde that it's looks practically white. While most would be happy to have a hair colour others would have to dye to achieve it annoys Caelea to no end. She's not exactly going to blend in with it is she? Still she keeps it long enough so that it falls below her shoulders. It's quite feather like and messy, often tied back to prevent it from falling in front of her face.
Caelea’s skin is, unsurprisingly, very pale. To the point where the smallest bit of sun could burn her. It’s a pain, really. Her face is quite round and lacking in any sharp edges – quite long in shape. Her nose and lips are well proportioned to it. She has eyes that are technically very pale blue. However in certain lights they look more purple then anything, and sometimes even have a reddish tint. She likes to stick with describing them as blue. It’s more normal.
Along with being slim and fit Caelea has decent curves for her size. Nothing too large (or annoying) but enough to make her body quite attractive. She generally lacks in scars – her hands and feet are tough and callused from gymnastics, but she doesn’t have anything else noticeable. They’re pretty obvious to in her more normal attire – she has a preference for shorts and tank tops over anything else, sometimes with a jacket on the top. She’ll swap to jeans or leggings if it’s really cold. Most of her clothes are quite plain coloured in varying shades of blue or any other colours she thinks don’t make her look washed out. Most of her clothing is quite sporty. She doesn’t have any tattoos, but she does have a right nose piercing.
"Everyone still annoys me, but I can't bring myself to watch anyone else die."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Caelea’s goal is to, first of all, to leave Farmer Hill. As soon as she can she’s getting out. Along with this she wants to compete as a gymnast or work as an acrobat – but she knows she has limited time before she’s too old for that.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Caelea believes that if you want something you have to work for it yourself, without depending on others. She’s also of the belief that there’s not enough time in life to put up with bullshit and that you should just cut off anyone you don’t want in your life. She thinks it’s okay to be harsh if it benefits you.
SECRETS ⫻ Caelea’s biggest secret is probably the fact that as much as she claims to not put up with anyone’s shit that she can’t cut herself off from her parents. Is because of them that she’s going to the Academy and doing a degree she hates. She doesn’t really want anyone to find out how bad her relationship with them is.
DESIRES ⫻ Caelea wants to be free, in a way, to do as she chooses. She wants to do what she wants with her life without it being dictated by others.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Bisexual. Though Caelea has only ever really dated one guy before and it didn't last particularly long, she just knows she'd date either.
FEARS ⫻ Caelea fears being injured. The last thing she’d want would be to be unable to move or do what she actually enjoys. She also fears failure and disappointing his family.
REPUTATION ⫻ Caelea doesn’t have a particularly good reputation. Her reputation in Farmer Hill is of someone who thinks she is above everyone else (like her parents) while being way too quick to anger. At Grand Ridge, where she is around people more, she’s got the reputation of being stand offish and, again, quick to anger with incredibly changeable moods. Generally people don’t want to spend time with her.
PET PEEVES ⫻ People who don’t work hard and get results anyway. Also people who insist on talking to her even if she clearly doesn’t want to talk to them.
QUIRKS ⫻ Caelea has a habit of randomly stretching a lot, sometimes just raising her leg so that its behind her head or touching her toes. It’s not too show off but more subconscious. She also quite often stands on one leg rather than both.
"All my past problems pale in comparison to what happened in the past few months."
Caelea was born in Farmer Hill and has never lived anywhere else. Her parents both moved to America when they were younger, after just marrying. So she’s technically Scottish and Irish even if she’s never visited the countries. Caelea was their second child, born ten years after her older brother. A mistake, you could say.
Her childhood was pretty normal, though. Her father was a banker and her mother an accountant – both well enough of that they were comfortable. With this came a certain stuck up opinion. The last thing they wanted was for their children to become farmers. That was below them. Because of her families nature Caelea didn’t have many friends in school. As she grew older the number decreased. Her parents pushed her hard to follow after them and be academically – to be like her brother who aced all his exams and easily got into Grand Ridge Academy to study mathematics. This was the last thing Caelea wanted. She was much more into sports and physical activities. Her parents said some pretty harsh things when she asked to join just a normal sports team.
So she learned simple gymnastics herself and worked on her flexibility through videos online all while going to school. When her brother graduated and got a good job in Farmer Hill she confided in him – he wasn’t as bad as her parents. Grudgingly her brother agreed to take her to gymnastics classes out of town, claiming that he was spending time with his sister once a week. Caelea excelled and enjoyed herself for once.
Then the end of high school came and with it the prospect of College. It was the last thing Caelea wanted to do but she wasn’t exactly given a choice. So, she got a place doing accounting at Grand Ridge because her parents made her and because she can’t say no to them. After all, the last thing she wants to be is a disappointment.
Since coming to College things haven’t gone to well – what with barely escaping for her life a few times, and discovering she’s got some weird ass ability to manipulate air. She watched her only friend killed in front of her by the glutton, and immediately after helped Paige get away.
She’s not going to watch someone die again if she can help it.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"At least I can run away if I need to..."
Gymnastics / Acrobatics & Flexibility ⫻ Caelea's main skills comes with her flexibility, trained over the years, and the gymnastics that she's learned. This helps with balance and looking cool for no reason by doing back flips or walking on her hands.
Quick Footed ⫻ Not the most useful talent, but Caelea is quite a fast runner (though doesn't have the most stamina) and can move about quite easily.
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Air Manipulation, the ability to control air
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ In actuality Caelea’s ability isn’t quite full blown Air Manipulation. She can control air but only in a more limited way – she can essentially create blasts of air out of her hands or feet. These have a range of maybe up to a foot. She can control just how powerful the air is, from a light breeze to a very strong gust. It’s obviously only useful in close range but allows her to do things such as propelling herself into the air or softening a landing. It can also blow stuff away and if she used it at its strongest on someone it would be quite damaging.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ In the presence of the mountain Caelea’s power becomes more full blown out air manipulation, so its controlling air in the more traditional sense. She no longer has to strictly shoot air out of her hands or feet and the distance is much greater, probably about ten times the amount.
LIMITS ⫻ Caelea's ability has a painfully short range, which means it's limited, but quite strong. Her ability may have a lot of raw power, but it lacks precision. She may be able to knock a car over with wind, but would find it hard to move a threading needle.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Caelea's power disrupts airflow on a minor spectrum. Which essentially means it's hard for Caelea to breath while using her air powers, to the point where it becomes incredibly difficult. She may suffocate herself if she isn't careful with her power.
"Yeah, sure, I’m done."
Not really, apart from the fact Caelea is a remake of a character from way back.
"Success isn't so easy anymore."

"I’ve been told I’m handsome by some. It’s not something I concern myself with."
Min-Jun, who often just goes by Min to simplify things, is on of those people who is unfairly attractive without trying. He got the best traits out of both of his parents – and it’s wasted a bit, because he only cares about his academic ability. Min isn’t particularly tall but he grew an inch taller than his father so he was never going to reach much further. His build is the closest thing to average – he isn’t incredibly skinny but a high metabolism keeps any weight in check. If he did any frequent exercise he’d probably have a good build.
Min’s face is well defined, with noticeable cheekbones and hard edges. His eyes curve inwards slightly, a brown that’s practically black. They’re a bit on the small side but go well with his other features. His skin tone is a soft yellowish-gold. His hair is practically black, with a slightly brownish sheen to it. He keeps it short and neat with just a bit of a fringe. Something easy to manage.
Min pulls of simple clothing too well, looking good even if he’s just wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Often he’ll be found in just that – it’s more comfortable to work in. If he’s actually meeting people he’ll probably upgrade to a shirt and darker trousers. He owns his fair share of suits thanks to his parents which he saves for the special occasions. More practical and warm clothing is maybe the one thing he is lacking. Min tends to dress in monotone black, white and grey with a little bit of blue thrown in.
"I need to be the best, to protect my cousin."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Min wants to take on his parents business and take it even further, expanding it all across the country and becoming a business entrepreneur.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ You won’t get anywhere if you don’t work hard, but there’s no point in putting effort into something you’re not good at. Min believes in people sticking to their strengths and not straying. He’s also self critical and thinks others should be too, always trying to better themselves.
SECRETS ⫻ Min knows something about Tuyen’s father’s disappearance, having overheard his parents talking. He won’t tell her though. Along with this he actually doesn’t particularly like his mother, not that he would ever say that to another family member.
DESIRES ⫻ Min wants to leave Farmer Hill one day to go somewhere bigger. He also wants to continue to gain knowledge.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Probably Heterosexual
FEARS ⫻ Min-Jun fears failure and not achieving his goal, while disappointing his family. Along with this he fears losing the friendship with his cousin.
REPUTATION ⫻ Min’s reputation is mixed – he is well thought of for his intelligence and ambitions among his parent’s generation, but this opinion is tarnished for some by the fact he is not white. Among those his age he is seen as a bit of a stuck up and intelligent snob.
PET PEEVES ⫻ Careless people and those who do not think before they do something.
QUIRKS ⫻ Min will often chew on a pen or something else when thinking hard.
"My family raised me well."
Min-Jun had a relatively normal upbringing. When he was five his cousin, Tuyen, moved in with them due to her father’s disappearance. Min was quick to get on with her – always taught that family was important by his parents. And without any other siblings she quickly became like a little sister to him.
Min always had the wait of his parent’s expectations on him. His grandparents had came over to start a simple business, just buying in goods you couldn’t get in Farmer Hill and selling them there. From that starting point it had expanded until his father took over. And Min would take over from him. His parents always pushed him to be the best, teaching him to constantly work hard. This combined with his natural intelligence meant that he excelled and easily gained his parent’s pride.
He knew that his cousin didn’t get the same support he did, so tried to help her a little himself. He’d always encourage her to do the things she loved after seeing her struggle with academics – he’d always believed it was best to do something you were good at. He was the one who made sure she aspired to do writing and made his parents allow her to drop science subjects in high school. If anything he was proud of her like any older brother would be.
Min got into college as expected of him, studying Economics and Mathematics. He hasn’t socialised very often, concentrating on working, but with his cousin now around he’s likely to be dragged out a little bit more.
Min hasn’t done much during the last part, just following the group and making sure Tuyen survived.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"I know that I’m intelligent, but I still work hard."
Intelligence ⫻ Min-Jun is incredibly intelligent, like far above average. Most things academic come easily to him, but he doesn’t have an artistic bone in his body and struggles to explain things simply.
Diplomatic ⫻ While not social in the sense that he’s good at making friends, Min is incredibly diplomatic – easily sweet talking people and knowing how to say the right thing.
Photographic Memory ⫻ Aiding his intelligence is the fact that Min has a very very good memory. He just has to read something once, or maybe twice, to remember it.
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Psychometry, the ability to perceive information from objects and people
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Min’s abstraction allows him to gain knowledge about an object, or a person, through touch. This information varies. For objects it might be who made and used it, along with information about what has been done with it and how it is used. For people he learns about basic facts; their names, background, where they’ve recently been, what they’ve recently done and the like. He can discern knowledge off both people and objects.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ In the presence of the mountain Min does not have to touch people – he can instead discern stuff from a short distance. Along with this it is possible for him to look deeper into a person, being able to replicate knowledge and skills they have. It allows him to go further into the past when looking at information related to objects.
LIMITS ⫻ Min's abstraction only works through touch, and it requires prolonged touch before he can pull deeper knowledge out of people and objects. He can get an object's entire history by holding it for around thirty minutes. However, he can force more information out faster if he focuses really hard. This is one of the few abilities that Awakened or other Extra-Normal beings are not immune or resistant to.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Min's abstraction doesn't have too many weaknesses... other than potentially suffering an information overload if he tries to force too much information out of an object at such a short period of time. This causes him a massive headache, and makes it difficult for him to tell thought from information.
"There’s no need for me to say anymore."
Min is fluent in Korean.
( Đoàn Thị Tuyen)
"How are we meant to surprise? I can't stay positive anymore, not when there's nothing to be positive about."
[ 19 | 5’2” | South Korean / Vietnamese | She/Her | 121 lb ]
"I’m pretty average, really, nothing special."
Tuyen is a bit on the shorter side, but not that small in the grand scheme of things. Her mother was smaller. She has a quite stocky build – a little bit wider than most her height. Along with this she is quite flat. Not enough so that she’d be mistaken for a guy, but there isn’t really that much there. She has a little bit of weight to her too which mostly goes to her legs. There isn’t much but it’s enough that she has to watch what she eats.
Tuyen’s hair is a dark brown-black, more brown in warmer lights. It falls down just past her shoulders and keeps relatively straight without much work. It frames a round face with a relatively soft nose and undefined lips. Her eyes are a very dark brown and a little bit bigger than normal. Her skin is golden-brown, inherited from her Vietnamese father – as many of her features are. She has very little of her mother in her aside from her hair.
Because she lacks in more feminine curves Tuyen tends to dress in nice tops and skirts, having a wide variety of combinations. She doesn’t often wear just a dress, finding it a bit stuffy, but is rarely found in something that isn’t a skirt. She does wear practical clothes when out and about around nature. She tends to prefer shades of purple, blue and pink though she isn’t very fussy when it comes to colours.
"It's getting harder and harder to pretend I'm okay..."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Tuyen hopes to becoming a properly published author in the future, making money off her books while having money to travel the world and see exotic places.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Tuyen believes in pretending to be okay and to keep up a positive outlook. However she also believes you should always lend a listening ear to friends and will always offer her help (even if she will never seek it out from others).
SECRETS ⫻ Just how much she lacks in confident about her own abilities and her constant fear of failure. How much she needs validation from others. Not to mention her sexuality, which she’s been question for a long time.
DESIRES ⫻ To be as happy as she pretends to be and to be free of the pressure of her family. She also wants to visit Vietnam in the hope she can find some of her father's family.
SEXUALITY ⫻ Gay, but in denial.
FEARS ⫻ Forever being second best and never living up to expectations.
REPUTATION ⫻ In the wider community of Farmer Hills Tuyen’s reputation is of the younger cousin of the intelligent Min. Among those at college she is seen as a happy go lucky, if absent minded, and friendly girl.
PET PEEVES ⫻ People who constantly talk about their troubles and are always mopey, bring down the conversation. Also people who put themselves down (somewhat ironically).
QUIRKS ⫻ Tuyen often hums or whistles to herself, and will just zone out at random times.
"At least I won't be missed by my family when I'm gone."
Tuyen was a bit of an accident. Her mother was a farmer hill native, with parents who moved over from South Korea to set up business. Her father, on the other hand, was a post graduate student who had moved over from Vietnam to study. The two hit it off and hooked up after a little too much to drink, resulting in Tuyen. It was safe to say her mother’s parents weren’t too happy about the child out of wedlock.
Things didn’t get much better after her birth – her mother had always been poorly and the pregnancy took its toll on her, meaning she passed away when Tuyen was only a few months old. Her father did everything to try and raise her himself – including submitting to the whims of her mother’s family. Tuyen doesn’t have many memories of this time, but what she has are happy ones.
Tuyen was only four when her father disappeared without a trace. His name was added to the list of people in Farmer Hill who had just gone missing and everyone went on without saying anything. Tuyen was taken in by her mother’s brother and his wife, since they had a son just a bit older than her.
After this her life wasn’t anything spectacular. She got on very well with her cousin, Min-Jun, even as they became very different as the years proceeded. She was always in his shadow – she couldn’t live up to her aunt and uncle’s expectations. She couldn’t be as smart as Min or as perfect as Min. She pretending she didn’t care, especially to him, but deep down it slowly chipped away at her self confidence. It didn’t help that they disapproved of what she was good at.
Still, Tuyen pursued her dreams and managed to get a place to study English Literature and Creative Writing at the college. Here she’s managed to get out of her cousin’s shadow just a little bit, easily making friends in different circles from him.
After the murders during a camping trip Tuyen was haunted by her shadow and constant hallucinations. Still, she joined the rest of the group in investigating – discovering that this was some kind abstraction she had. During the fight with Scott her shadow manifested physically – allowing her to help finish him for good. But like all the others she wasn’t prepared for what was to follow and barely made it out alive.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"I feel like my skills are useless."
Writing ⫻ Tuyen is good at writing, both fictional and non-fictional (like essays). Her main strength does come in fictional writing and novels.
Animal Identification / Knowledge ⫻ Due to her strange fascination and love for nature Tuyen has accumulated all sorts of useless knowledge about animals. If you ever need to know the exact subspecies of an animal or a random fact she’s the girl to go to.
Imagination ⫻ Tuyen’s imagination is quite something – you could say it was overactive. She gets ideas pretty easily, especially for stories. If it’s for something non-fictional, however, don’t expect something sensible.
Languages ⫻ Due to her parents, Tuyen is fluent in Korean and Vietnamese. She speaks Korean better due to her Aunt and Uncle using it around the house a lot but has made sure to retain her knowledge of Vietnamese (though she doesn't have anyone to speak it with).
"It’s a shadow constantly clinging to me and I wish it would just go away. One day it will get me killed, I'm sure of that."
SIGIL & LOCATION ⫻ Tuyen's sigil is located on her chest right above her right breast. It's a featureless silhouette-like figure of herself that's all black, but it's in a poised stance with a hand in the air, ready to stab. Instead of the knife being in the sigil's hand, it's in the silhouette's chest.
ABSTRACTION ⫻ The Shadow, the ability to create a shadow-like entity spawned from negative thoughts and emotions that otherwise tortures her.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Linked directly to her negativity, and other such dark thoughts, Tuyen has her own doppelganger that takes the shape of a shadow. This Shadow is a sentient being that near constantly taunts her, and tortures her with the deep down feelings of dread and insecurity that she has inside of herself. It has two states; inactive and active. In its inactive state, nobody but Tuyen is able to see it (Not even the Awakened can see it without certain abilities), and it actively protects her from psychic intrusion by filling the intruder's mind with screams. It can cloud Tuyen's vision by creating illusions, and fooling her into believing things that are not there, or hiding things. With enough focus, Tuyen is able to ward off the Shadow for a period of time, and get some peace - but it'll always return.
While active on the other hand... it manifests in the physical world. It's default appearance is of a black, inky, version of herself, but one of the basest abilities of the shadow is the ability to manipulate its own shape with the only limit being that it cannot get larger than twelve feet. It can either keep its form as a shadow of Tuyen, or it can become some horrific monster, whatever is spawned from her imagination. The Shadow is capable of interacting with reality, from reaching over and grabbing objects, to attacking. It's fairly strong, too - it's strong enough to throw a fully grown man around like it's nothing, and flip over a car with sheer brute strength. The Shadow will either manifest on it's own, or if Tuyen is able to plead with it. Normally, the being is only interested with tormenting Tuyen, and will do as it pleases, but if she is able to convince it, maybe it'll assist her. It has some semblance of self preservation and will protect her if necessary.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ While in the mountain's graces, it's strength doubles, and is able to lift up a minivan (albeit with much strain on itself and Tuyen). It's able to grow up to twenty-five feet in height, and mixed with its strength, it's incredibly dangerous. Able to compete with some of the strongest Awakened and extra-normal beings.
LIMITS ⫻ Tuyen's shadow, first and foremost, cannot move away from her. It's effectively clung to her body, and is as mobile as she is. This also means that she's effectively it's weak spot. Again, as stated in the description it can get up to ten feet tall, strong enough to pose a threat, and is able to near-limitlessly change its shape. Tuyen cannot control the Shadow - unless she learns to get over her insecurities, and her fear of failure. Otherwise, it'll do as it pleases.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ As stated before, the shadow is her own worst enemy, and only wishes to torture Tuyen. It's as much of a detriment (possibly even more) as a strength, and will do anything in its power to keep her from knowing her worth. Tuyen will have to conquer her inner-doubts in other to defeat it, and control it. The two of them are linked together, and both receive the same damage. If the Shadow gets injured, the same wound will appear on Tuyen (Where ever the location of it's anatomical equivalent is). It's possible for the Shadow to receive damage that'll kill Tuyen, or be disabled. Also, the Shadow merely manifesting is a drain on Tuyen, and will cause her to feel more and more exhausted the longer it's out. Until she can't take it anymore, and the Shadow will go inactive.
"I just wish everything would stop."
Kimberly's a bit odd but a good friend. I only hope that she’s ok, I haven’t seen her properly since shit went down.
I dunno, are we really friends? I don’t think she trusts me anymore. I honestly don’t know.
I wish we’d talked more.
I barely know him, but I hope that he made it.
I might’ve saved her life?
I mean, he seemed sort of cool. That was until he abandoned me to carry someone alone when shit went down. Not to mention he was maybe going to use someone as a human sacrifice. Normally I wouldn’t care much but man, I just don’t know what to think.
She may be confrontational, but she helps when its important.
I can’t believe she’s dead...
I never liked her, and I really don’t trust her. I think people are giving her too much shit but she better start spilling what she knows.
I keep helping her, cause like hell am I going to let someone else die if I can help it. I don’t even know her but at this point it doesn’t matter. I'd like to talk to her when we aren't running for our lives.
Tuyen is like a little sister to me and I’m going to do anything I can to protect her. I don’t know how to, but I will/
I still don’t like him, but that’s not important anymore. I care more about making it out alive with Tuyen than fighting with him
She got on my nerves, but that doesn’t mean she deserved to die...
He’s been there for me recently... I think I’d be dead without him. I just don’t know how to tell him about what’s going on for me.
He’s the only one I talked to about the shadow following me... though I guess everyone’s seen it now. I don’t know, we really need to talk.
He was so nice... I can’t believe he’s gone.
Rita's odd, but I like her. She's the only one I've really talked to since everything went down and I think I'm going to stick with her.
Barely reaching a total height of 5'6, Charlie isn't exactly the kind of person to be noticed, at least that's what one would think, until you stared a little closer. Its nearly impossible to determine exactly what Charlie is on first glance, though this hasn't stopped many an eye from trying. They carry with them a mysterious beauty and elegance, but somehow sending mixed signals of masculine and boyish behavior. Charlie is speculated to be trans, but the truth is Charlie is just very good at hiding whatever lies within their pants. Gender is nothing more then a social construct.
Their body is thin, and their face is very pronounced, sharp, with features that look like they could cut through diamonds. Unsurprisingly though, their flesh is very soft, much more so then their features would lead on. Their skin is almost perfectly tanned between the point of being pale and being nicely done, so it's safe for one to assume they spend a fair amount of time outside and inside. They manage to give an illusion of being both mildly shapely, and completely flat at once. The only clear body marking is a long scar from some years back, that runs along the outer rim of their right arm.
Charlie's eyes are a faded blue, bordering on grey, much like a clear day with a storm on the horizon, but still shining with enough pigment to be considered a blue color. Their wavy, somewhat messy white-blond hair trails down to near the end of their neck line, and that's the way Charlie likes it, short enough to not be a bother, but long enough to be good looking. Charlie's clothing style is somewhat simple, often consisting of tight fitting jeans and running shoes, long sleeved shirts, and baggy hoodies, with no particular color scheme in mind for any of it. Oddly enough, they have a habit for rarely wearing socks underneath their footwear, so they occasionally complain about their feet blistering.
"There's always tomorrow."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ They just want to live peacefully, maybe finally get a job as an actor and get out of the backwater town they find themselves stuck in. Sadly, Charlie hasn't been able to scrape together the funds to buy a functioning car and still have enough to live on for a small while.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Life could always be worse, right? Always look forward to the future, because someday things will work out, someday everything will finally get better. Of course, there will always be bad days, Charlie knows that, horrible days you might not recover from, but that's no reason to give up. Everything will get better someday.
SECRETS ⫻ Besides whatever happens to be hidden by the strange items known as clothing, Charlie does have a few things they refuse to talk about. They never let anyone see them change, which has about as much to do with the scar as it does with modesty, and they have yet to reveal to anyone where exactly they currently live.
DESIRES ⫻ To at some point settle down in a nice place, and pursue their dream career of acting. Charlie wants to make it big and participate in all sorts of films and plays. A happy life may be a bit much to ask for, but it's a goal, and Charlie will continue to work at it.
SEXUALITY ⫻ They haven't really thought about it. Much of their time is spent trying to enjoy life and make money at the same time that they haven't had time. People are people, no matter their gender.
FEARS ⫻ Being a burden. Charlie has often worried about messing up around others, or even taking up their time for longer than necessary, and they often excuse themselves when they feel like they've overstayed their welcome. No matter what, Charlie refuses to burden others, when they have lives of their own, the guilt would be to much. Death doesn't sound to appealing either.
REPUTATION ⫻ Known as the oddball jogger with a tendency to preform weird movie style action scenes when they think nobody's around.
PET PEEVES ⫻ When people say it's no problem after assisting Charlie with something. It is a problem! They didn't need to help them out and trouble themselves with Charlie. Cheaters are also considered despicable, never taking the time and actual effort to succeed in life, which often makes Charlie push themselves harder then they should if they find some sort of loop hole around something.
QUIRKS ⫻ Constantly twirling their fingers through their hair, Charlie also frantically glances around during conversation, finding it impossible to keep direct eye contact with others for long, for no real reason.
"My past is action packed and full of adventure! Nah, just kiddin, it's pretty normal."
Born in the city of Pomeroy, is Washington, Charlie grew up in a family of six, being the youngest of two brothers and a sister. Their family lived a rather simple life in a large apartment building, with enough money to live comfortably, but not enough to really enjoy the luxuries of life. During the first ten years of their life, they never felt comfortable in their own skin, up until they were introduced to the concept of being neither gender. This felt about right to them, and being a close enough body type, they were able to effectively fool their classmates at the local school for a short amount of time until the wig fell off. They had to figure out the perfect length of hair after that.
They would often find themselves at friends places, and ended up watching TV with them, where they were slowly introduced to the world of acting. Acting brought such a spark to their life, that they began obsessing over it, constantly begging to go over to friends residences and watch movies, to the point of where others started avoiding Charlie all together. This didn't stop Charlie though, they began looking for any way possible to continue learning as much as they could about acting, going as far as reenacting a suicide scene from a movie on the top of apartment building their family lived in at the age of thirteen. Trouble followed very quickly.
As the years passed, they began studying every single angle they could about getting a career in the movies, even trying out in local plays at school to ramp up their acting skills. They were met with mixed success. Years passed, and they took a rare opportunity to travel from their home to the prestigious Grande Ridge Academy to further their education. However, Charlie's only mode of transportation was a crummy junk car, and it took them longer then they might have thought originally to make it. Regardless, after many pit stops to make money for gas and keep themselves fed, Charlie made it, they were in Farmer Hill, now they just had to survive College. That's been turning out to be harder then they thought.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"Things won't get better immediately, so I spent a lot of time goofing off."
[Acting] ⫻ Studying the art of being somebody else for a good chunk of their life, Charlie knows how to play both male and female characters, and also has picked up knowledge on a number of random little things that might but probably won't work in real life from studying movies.
[Jogger] ⫻ Running around everywhere to keep in shape, and to save on gas bills, damn those prices are getting up there, Charlie can move at a pretty decent speed for quite some time. Charlie's had to outrun a good few drunken morons too, so this has helped.
"It's a good day, I feel energized."
SIGIL & LOCATION ⫻ Located on the very back of their neck, rests a ball of pure light, possibly the sun, maybe just projection of a flashlight, either is likely.
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Hope-Infusion, the ability to strengthen the properties of items and people based off hope.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ Tied to their optimism, anticipation, and desire for a great outcome, Charlie has the ability to project it as an energy. This energy infuses objects depending on how hopeful they are feeling and boosts their properties such as durablility, and various other properties. If Charlie were to infuse a kitchen knife it'd be twice as durable and sharp enough to cut through way more than you'd expect a simple kitchen knife would. If they infused a wall it'd be more durable and would hold together. If Charlie infused a gun the bullet would have more piercing power and be able to affect the Extra-Normal. The examples go on, and it makes Charlie a very powerful Awakened if they get their hands on the right items. However, Charlie isn't just limited to inanimate objects, they can infuse people and animals. Anyone that Charlie has contact with will feel the energy and will be stronger, faster, and tougher - and the Awakened will receive a small boost to their abilities. In addition, Charlie is capable of infusing themselves and make themself a lot stronger.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ The mountain's presence creates a field that Charlie can control. This field is around five meters and she can selectively pick and chose what gets stronger and what doesn't. Which means that Charlie can infuse a lot more items than they would normally be allowed to, and they can infuse a lot more people, too. Their infusions also get a lot stronger.
LIMITS ⫻ Unless in the presence of the mountain, Charlie can only infuse one thing at a time, and it takes a few moments of focus in order to infuse an object (when strengthened by the mountain any objects that enter their field still takes a few moments to be infused). Which slows them down considerably and isn't that helpful in a fast-paced fight. They can only infuse one object at a time and for as long as they have contact with it (or its within their field), after fifteen seconds the effects will fade completely. Any infused objects have lesser effects on Awakened and other Extra-Normal beings.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ The ability is directly linked to Charlie's optimism and anticipation, and if they don't feel particularly hopeful, their abstraction has an opposite effect; objects will get weaker. That kitchen knife I mentioned before? It'd probably shatter on contact with a soft object. That wall? It'll fall apart. This may be a double-edged sword, but this will apply to any objects that Charlie touches, including themselves with no option to turn it. They'll be weaker, slower, and more prone to injury until they get their hopes back up.
"I may be part Canadian, but I'm don't always say sorry."
"Curiosity had killed the cat, yet no one knows how it came back."
[ Age 19 | 5'4 Ft. | French-AmericanShe/Her | 133.7 Lbs. ]
"Well, I have to look decent, don't I?"
Standing at 5'4, Madeline's fair skin, short dark brown hair, and blue eyes would make to think she could be of regal ancestry, but her lazy, casual, and partialy apathetic personality says otherwise.
She's normally seen wearing hoodies and tanktops with pastel colors, due to her hair color making her a walking solar pannel. With her formal wear being no different, a leather jacket in place of the hoodies. She's never seen without her boots, changing pertaining to the current weather or season.
If one could look hard enough, they would see old burn scars on her skin. Madeline wont say how she got them, but you might already know either way. She has ear, nose, and mouth piercings, but is never seen with all three on. She has a slim build, keeping her weight in check.
"No, I haven't been in an asylum, thanks for asking."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ Her main goal in life is to become a lawyer- Well, it was. Now her goal is to survive through the fight against the glutton, or die saving someone else.
PHILOSOPHY ⫻ Madeline concluded that everyone in the world is born an idiot, and is always an idiot, one way or another.
SECRETS ⫻ She tries to hide her burn scars from childhood, afraid it'll make her seem like a weakling and coward. Madeline also has a form of PTSD, which tends to make her cautious when it comes to handling fire.
DESIRES ⫻ Madeline wishes she could do more with her abstraction than heal herself, and others on occasion.
SEXUALITY ⫻ No preference. If there even is one.
FEARS ⫻ Madeline is afraid of fire, enclosed spaces, and being concidered a coward. She's also afraid of dogs, but no one really knows why.
REPUTATION ⫻ Talk of the town has made her "The Ghost of Farmer Hill", from her "Dying" and "Coming back to life" a week later in her childhood.
PET PEEVES ⫻ Strangely, people who bombard others with questions. Oh, and having to deal with bugs before she does something, like sleep. Reason why she hates cockroaches.
QUIRKS ⫻ She tends to draw on her arms, mostly simple stuff like music notes, and has a habit of drumming on flat surfaces when she's bored.
"What? I'm not dead."
Once upon a time, back when she was a child, Madeline had lived an almost simple life. She was an orphan, living in a small run of the mill orphanage in Denver, Colorado.
From what she was told, her biological parents supposedly died, drowning from a hurricane flood, and the intended guardian she was to be given to was in no shape to take care of her. So Madeline was taken in by the local Orphanage.
She spent most of her time alone, trying to learn how play the instruments that were allow to the children. The one she liked to play most was the piano, branching to her hobby today. Yet she still managed to gain some friends over the years.
Then one day, when she was 7, she was finally adopted by a family of a mom, dad, and a pair of older twin siblings . Life seemed to improve then. When they moved to Farmer Hill, she got decent grades in school, she improved on playing the piano, and gain an interest in gaming. Her parents, working as a waiter and waitress, were constantly working, so she was left alone with her siblings for most of the time.
One day, when she was 14 however, things seemed to take a drastic turn. When Madeline, her mother, and her sister went into town to shop, they had accidentaly hit a gasoline truck, resulting in the vehicle exploding into flames.
While her mother and siblings bodies were pulled out of the rubble, she was no where to be found, so Madeline was asummed dead.
When in reality, she was able to pull herself out of the car. Burnt and bleeding, Madeline was able to limp to the nearest family member, and was taken to the hospital, where she was treated and recovered.
Three years later, Madeline returned home.
Aparently, her mother survived the crash too, but her sister died from one of the car parts puncturing her lungs. She tried to get her life back on track after so, but will still, and always be, the ghost of Farmer Hill.
And that was made clear when she was a part of the camp massacre. Madeline tried to fight the murderer back, a monstrous Scott Reese, so that some of the others could escape, but was struck down in a single blow. While it did seem like she died, that was when Maddie had awakened her abstraction. So her wound healed, and she managed to survive. That was only the begining.
She had join the other survivors in solving the mystery of John Reid, which revealed more than she expected. Especially about what happened to her sister, Samantha Levine. She turned out to be an awakened as well, and the car accident that heavily scarred Maddie was planned. Despite wanting to call bullshit on it, things took a turn for the worse.
Scott Reese had found them, and murdered the only friend she managed to make in front of her eyes. In disbelief and silent anger, she tried to attack Scott, but was only used as a human shield. The last thing she remembered before being knocked unconsious was seeing everyone fighting Reese, and wishing she had left with The Hound.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"Just simple hobbies of mine."
Gaming ⫻ A console gamer, she mostly plays horror and shooter games in her freetime.
Piano ⫻ Self taught, Madeline can play the piano by here. According to her, trying to follow music sheets was hard for her when she was a kid.
Hunting ⫻ Sometimes, Madeline and her brother go out to hunt deer and such for sport.
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Self-Healing, a restorative energy flows through Maddie that repairs all of her wounds, and resets her to a certain point.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ To reflect her thoughts of coming back to life, Madeline's abstraction gifted her the ability to heal at an accelerated rate using the same mystical force that flows through all the Awakened. Whenever she gets an injury, no matter how minor, it'll begin to glow with a mystical blue light that'll engulf it. After a few moments the light will fade, and the wound is healed. Depending on how severe the wound, the longer it'll take to heal. A stab wound would require, at most, ten minutes, while a broken leg would need an hour of healing. Anything smaller than that would either instantly regenerate, or take only a few moments. Any of Maddie's physical injuries can be healed (except for one type of injury). Long as she can survive it, she can effectively heal from anything. In addition, she can also heal from attacks dealt to the mind, or her emotions.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ When in the mountain's grace, her healing rate doubles. A stab wound takes five minutes, while a broken limb requires half an hour. Again, she'll near-instantly heal from anything smaller than that. In addition, she can pass on her healing energy to other people, and heal their wounds (albeit at a much slower rate).
LIMITS ⫻ Obstruction is the biggest limit to her self-healing. If there is an object in the way, then Maddie cannot heal it until the object is removed from her being. Speed is also the other limit; there isn't a limit to how much Maddie can heal at a time, but only how quickly she can do it. In addition, Maddie can still be knocked out, suffocated, etc.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Fire is a big weakness for Maddie, not only does it disrupt her aura-reading, but it also disrupts her healing ability. When in the presence of fire, her healing slows down - and if it's an injury caused by fire, she actively cannot heal it any faster than any other wound. The process of healing is also a painful one, that'll make her feel twice the amount of pain as she heals.
"Beware of The Hound..."
- Madeline is usually called Maddie for short. - Tends to play old arcade games when she can. - Is a sucker for broadway musicals.
At just under six feet tall and inheriting his dad 's stocky build, Nate is someone who in another world could've had the look of a Schwarzenegger-esque body builder. His only problem? He didn't work towards any of that - instead, he has a substantial bit of fat on to the point of being overweight, though not outright being in the classification of obese. His pale complexion betrays his origins as a Bellevue native.
His eyes hold a solid brown colouration whilst his hair is of a slightly darker complexion, not particularly long but definitely getting towards the shaggy side of things. If he doesn't shave for a while he develops a thin mask of stubble along his lip, cheeks and jawline though it never goes beyond this - and he seldom goes without shaving it for that reason, which in turn contributes to his 'baby face' appearance.
In terms of clothing, there isn't a great deal that can be said about Nate's sense of fashion - he isn't particularly bothered about fashion labels or anything like that and tends to dress with a utilitarian approach, favoring cargo pants over jeans and throwing on whatever shirt and hoodie he's got to hand. It's seldom he's seen wearing anything other than a pair of size twelve trainers.
"Just have a good time."
MAIN GOAL ⫻ At this point in life Nate is in the mindset of enjoying himself whilst he can, making connections along the way and developing a career - he's studying towards that later point and has a rough idea of where he would like to be but no clue to get there. Maybe working for his dad if it didn't work out.
Nate' primary concern is just to run through and let things happen as they happen and just have a good time in the meanwhile, making friends along the way. He has a fair share of personal doubts about life and himself but he doesn't allow it to show at the surface and instead masks or distracts from it with a combination of humour, impulsive behaviour and other displays in which he is outspoken. On top of this is a tendency to lash out in frustration when humour fails him which itself causes its own issues.
The recent loss of someone close to Nate is one thing he doesn't particularly dwell on or talk about - he has a habit of masking it and bottling up his frustrations and other demons with his outspoken demeanour. He's also been bullied to varying degrees in the past but this isn't so much a secret as it is an undisclosed topic.
DESIRES ⫻ As said before, Nate wants to enjoy life in the short term and that extends to making some good friends, getting to know others.
He enjoys playing video games and browsing the internet, spending a significant amount of time doing these either of these things - often staying up well into the early hours of the morning when he's not doing something (such as study or work) the following day or even in spite of these things, occasionally to his own detriment.
He doesn't drink often either (being underage doesn't exactly help with that) but when he does he's usually one to try and have a good time, his outspoken demeanour only exacerbated by this.
One other thing he's acknowledged is that he's a little out of shape and as it happens he enjoys going out walking, particularly at night, just to clear his head.
SEXUALITY ⫻ He prefers chicks without the dicks.
FEARS ⫻ Aside from dying fears losing all joy in his life and becoming miserable and depressed, amounting to nothing. Losing or ending up with no friends is another thing that terrifies him - or being ignored.
REPUTATION ⫻ Nate is a newer face to town but those who've paid him any attention have probably come across his sense of humour and how abrasive it can be.
PET PEEVES ⫻ If someone contradicts Nate when he firmly believes it to be factually correct (or incorrect) he will get incredibly frustrated and sometimes end up pressing into an argument about the matter.
One of his big problems is that Nate lacks the same kind of "brakes" that others might have and, for example in an argument or discussion he'll be stubborn enough (or fail to take a hint) to keep pushing a subject even when it's clear it's in the best interest of all to stop. Sometimes he has a habit of digging himself into a hole, then digging some more - at points where other people would stop he continues to keep on going too far.
As another example of this, he once took the photo of someone else in high school who'd been an asshole to him, put it on a gay dating website and gave a would-be suitor the guy's phone number and another his address to meet up, only stopping when a meeting was called with all students to warn them that whoever was responsible would be found and punished if it continued. It's one (of many ) examples of the twisted sense of humour he can have and how he can push things too far.
"Does it matter? I'm trying to enjoy things here."
Nate's parents divorced early in his life, when he was about five years old - things remained amiable between them however and he initially spent every other weekend travelling between Bellevue and Tacoma, his father having refused to move too far away from him in his earlier years so as to ensure his son didn't grow up without some influence in his life.
This changed as Nate grew olde however and as a successful businessman his dad found that for the greater wealth he had to support his son he had less time to spend with him. Fortnightly visits became monthly, then bi-monthly, depending on things. As a consequence, he spent most of his time with his mom and stepdad and grew closer to them along the way.
Eventually his dad, who was from and owned a significant stake in a business in Farmer Hill moved back to Montana and saw Nate only when he was able to - but life moved on.
In school he did alright, nothing particularly outstanding but nontheless not failing in his grades, though a point was made that if he tried harder he could've done better. He endured a share of bullying just like anyone else but the only thing it did was leave him with a bout of pent up frustration that wouldn't be worked out for years - he made some friends and things seemed alright, particularly towards the end of school.
That was, however until Nate came home one night and his mom didn't turn up at ther usual hour, his stepdad unable to reach her line. Neither of them heard anything until the following morning when they received a knock at their door -her car had got into a head-on collision with a truck, she'd survived that but had been left brain-dead, the decision to cut off her life support coming soon afterwards at the urging of her husband and a reluctant Nate.
Devastated, Nate spent the final third of his time in high school withdrawn, reverting to whatever means he could to numb himself to the grief, his stepdad only able to offer a limited degree of consolation and his biological dad only able to offer financial support. He lost a few friends due to his own actions and as he finished up the school year there was the question of what to do next.
Partially as a measure to offer Nate some new surroundings and partially because he had family there and was therefore better off, his dad arranged for him to stop with his sister (Nate's aunt) at a home he leased them in Blacksmith Square whilst he studied engineering at Grand Ridge, bolstered by the financial support his businesses provided.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"I'm told I'm an expert in knowing things which are useless."
[IT Guy] ⫻ Nate is more than competent when it comes to working with computers and digital equipment alike.
[Encyclopedia] ⫻ Nate has a habit of retaining even the most insignificant piece of information and keeping it in his head, a skill honed by hours of browsing the Internet looking at wikipedia articles about the Second World War or articles about the production of Game of Thrones.
ABSTRACTION ⫻Intangibility - the ability to become intangible to the world.
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ By concentrating (or involuntarily if in a stressful situation) Nate can render himself and entities in immediate contact with him (such as clothing or objects in his hand) intangiable and pass through solid materials or, in turn, allow solid objects to pass through him as though he were walking through water.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ (Explain to me how the Abstraction grows stronger in the presence of Mount Ever Reaching. What extra abilities does your character have?) The water-like resistance to movement through solid materials whilst in an intangiable state is reduced by a large margin, allowing Nate to almost jog whilst in this state and retain a greater degree of manoeuvrability. Furthermore, his ability to extend his intangiable state to other entities is expanded to a wider radius around him.
AURA SENSING ⫻ Being in an intangiable state has exposed Nate to a gap between the physical realm and what is beyond and, as a consequence, he is able to pick up on auras affiliated with the dead or the dying. Whilst in his intangiable state Nate can outright see things that he wouldn't be able to otherwise see and whilst he'll learn to tune it out there are some things out there that can be downright fucked up.
LIMITS ⫻ Phasing through objects is incredibly difficult for Nate because there is a resistance. Almost like passing through water, he can't move that fast while phasing. He's limited to a heavily inconvenienced march while phasing. He can only phase for five minutes straight before needing a rest. He also cannot phase through high concentrations of energy, such as power lines, and flames, and anything of the sort.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Phasing reduces his ability to see by a great margin, his vision will be very dark and blurry. He'll no longer be able to see color, and his distance will be greatly reduced. Which makes it incredibly difficult for him to maneuver.
"Uh.. something something whatever."
Nate's dad, Kenneth Ward, is the owner of KWS Co - a successful shipping and haulage companywith an office and depot in Farmer Hill, among other places across the northwest.
Cyrus stands at a height of six-foot-two-inches tall and weighs in at a meager one-hundred and eighty-five pounds, packed into a slender but lean-muscular frame. His face features a strong jawline, a thick scruff of hair that he likes to pretend is his beard, and a hairline that is kept short and messy; constantly looking like he just woke up. His sense of fashion is absent, and as such his usual clothing bears some semblance to a simple pair of boots underneath some slim cut grey chino’s underneath a simple white V-neck shirt underneath a, once again, grey jacket. While he sometimes adds some frills, such as the multi-colored scarf that he wears during the winter months, he is ever so much the basic dresser in terms of appearance. He wears glasses and his frame is a very simple, brown-like color.
"If I can help why shouldn’t I?"
MAIN GOAL ⫻
Currently, Cyrus hopes to hit the restart button on life and begin anew here at the academy. Ever since the injury, and the re-injury months later, he has had to put his dream of being a professional athlete to rest and embrace that he will never compete in sports ever again. He sat back, took a look at the possibilities, and decided he wanted to pursue a career in sports still; on the medicine side of it, however. He is currently a true freshman with a focus on a degree in the sports medicine field, hoping to one day be a team doctor for some professional team.
Life is good as long as your living it, or so Cyrus says. Cyrus is an active participant in his own life, and soon hopes to have a group of friends to participate in theirs, and wants to experience all the fun he can now that he is away from his childhood home.
His injury is very much still present. He will often stumble as his ATFL tendon simply gives out, and will be left with a red sore on the side of his ankle and foot for days after.
He abandoned his brother to suffer the same fate that he had suffered.
Is very much into Pagan music, something his Catholic family would be up in arms to learn.
To always make the correct decision and to always be the best in whatever field he finds himself in.
Straight as an arrow.
Cyrus is afraid he will never live up to the unrealistic expectations set upon him young in life. He was destined for greatness, and if he does not crest the mountain that is school ahead of him, he might just crumble into nothing.
Cyrus is a nobody here. Back home he was a bright star yet here his light whimpers and barely burns.
PET PEEVES ⫻
Not giving one-hundred percent effort in any task. If you have to do something it only makes sense to do it right.
Under the breath, he is often humming a tune; recognizable yet no one can seem to name it. He never catches himself doing it, instead has to be reminded of the fact. When asked, he will say it is from one song or another but it never is.
"I could have had it all."
Cyrus was born to a former athlete as a father and his college sweetheart of a wife in one of the many small suburbs outside Detroit, Michigan. From as early as he can remember, sports were always a part of his life. Baseball, basketball, football, soccer, and more form the core memory of his youth as he was always playing. His father, a former football player whose promising career was cut short by a bad injury, had an unhealthy obsession with his potential sports career, with the prevailing sense that he was living vicariously through his kid. It didn't take long for anyone to realize that Cyrus was good at one sport in particular; football. Every aspect of the sport seemed to resonate with something primal within Cyrus. Tackling, juking, and every other facet you could think of were areas that Cyrus excelled in. His father, sensing potential greatness, pushed him past his limit with a relentless training regime that forged an Adonis of an athlete. Even before he stepped on the high school field, scouts were filming at his games and taking notes at his practices. His free time was spent hunting with his extended family when the seasons would allow.
Once in high school, Cyrus began destroying records at a pace that was unprecedented. He was a running back that could catch like a receiver, he was a linebacker with the stopping power of a full-sized safety, and he was punt returner with the speed of a sprinter. He led his squad to four straight state championship games and was well on his way to win his fourth when he suffered a catastrophic injury to his right ankle in overtime as he was making his way to the endzone. The pain caused him to lose his grip on the ball on their first possession, resulting in a defeat. He later learned he had a full tear of his ATFL ligament and had to undergo lateral ankle ligament reconstruction as a result. While the surgery went well with expectations being, he could start training again in four months if the physical therapy went well, and with college teams still interested in the speedy player, that timetable did not match his fathers. Instead, two months after the surgery, he was back to practicing in his back yard; and proceeded to damage the same ligament; and was forced under the knife once more. After this second surgery, all scholarship offers were pulled after the doctors informed him the injury was likely to reoccur if he ever played football again.
With his future sidelined, Cyrus’s father instead turned his attention towards his younger brother who had shown signs of being the talent that Cyrus could have. Cyrus clashed with his father about the way he was treating him, forcing him to practice when he should have been resting was the main battleground that the two fought. Eventually, after three years of fighting Cyrus decided he had to get out of the area. He had been attending a local community college with a focus on sports journalism in the years since he graduated yet he felt this primal urge to go into the medical aspect of the sports world. He saw an ad online for a school, far from home and far from the abusive home life. He had saved enough money to cover tuition for at least a semester at a proper school and had assistance from his grandparents for the rest. Registering last semester, he had to buy his time until he could arrive for the new semester. He left, leaving a note explaining where he was going and why.
He is now on his second semester, and he couldn’t have been worse for wear at Grand Ridge Academy. His brother has suffered a bad injury when trying to return from a minor one, and it appears he may never play another second, and might never live a normal life again. Remorse lashed over him like a river lashes against a rock, causing his abstraction to appear on his hands. At first, he thought he was going mad. He asked a friend if anything about his hands looked off, showing the abstractions in plain view, and they responded with a no. As a result, he started wearing gloves. The gloves, however, couldn’t protect him when he accidentally crossed his hands. When his right hand crossed over his left, he experienced everything would happen over the next thirty seconds simultaneously as time went on; and he could pull himself back to any point in that time frame. When his left crossed over his right, his mind felt like it split and he suddenly had three separate perspectives that could move and act as if they were unique. For days, Cyrus played with it and was slowly driven to madness as he thought he had finally snapped and had fallen down the rabbit's hole, unaware of just how far down it goes. In a fit of madness, Cyrus went and bought a bottle of whiskey and drank too much of it before stumbling his way outside with some vague nothing of a plan to prove to the world that he was not crazy, tripping over himself and falling down the stairs before blacking out; or so he thought. He awoke a day later, in a hospital, with a pain in his side and a terrible headache in his head.
He thought nothing of it until he heard a scream.
SKILLS & TALENTS
"I’m fast and I’m accurate"
[Hunting and tracking] ⫻ Spending much of his life in the forest, Cyrus is an accomplished hunter and tracker. Starting at an age much too young, Cyrus was taught how to handle a firearm and how to keep it clean. While he has no weapon with him at the academy, the skill still lingers.
[Speed and jukes] ⫻ Cyrus, despite his injury, has kept his natural speed and athleticism. He still runs to keep himself in shape and this has allowed him to keep the dream alive; at least for one day more.
[Intuition] ⫻ Cyrus always seems to have had a vague notion of how an action will play out. This helped him avoid tackles when he was playing sports and has now led him to figure out what direction to take in life.
"It's hard to explain, but it’s more than just time manipulation. Here let me show you."
SIGIL & LOCATION ⫻ The first sigil is on his right hand and is in the shape of a three-dimensional pyramid. The second sigil is on his left hand and is a three-dimensional representation of a circle. When he activates his abstraction, both sigils combine on his right hand showing the circle spinning in a hundred different ways simultaneously over-top the pyramid.
ABSTRACTION ⫻ Dimensional Manipulation
ABSTRACTION DESCRIPTION ⫻ When activated, Cyrus’s abstraction allows his body to enter a higher dimension; in two different forms. In its first form, Cyrus gains the ability to revert himself back anywhere he was in the thirty-seconds after he activates it. Wounds or injuries suffered before he pulls himself back will disappear. He can activate this abstraction by placing his right-hand over-top his left-hand and he can pull himself back simply by picturing the position his body was. The second form, creating this time by a left-hand over his right-hand approach, creates two shades that he can control in addition to himself.
The first ability (named Hike! by Cyrus) is one that's used retroactively after activation. He has a thirty-second window to reactivate it, by mentally picturing where he was along the way and what he was doing. He can grab objects, and potentially people, and bring them back with him as well. The entire time he is moving there is a trail that follows him that shows what movement he was doing along the way. The trail is visible to everyone, and it looks like every second there was a snapshot of where his body was; arms, legs, head and so forth. These snapshots are the points where he can pull himself back to. One potential use is to activate the ability, throw a punch, and then run and grab somebody and pull them back and have the punch hit. He, as he thought he was going crazy, has very little control over this power, however. Sometimes when he activates it with a set purpose in mind, he will go about the task yet the ability will retrigger itself and pull him back to the start point.
The second form of this ability (named Break!) is active in use. Cyrus will spawn forth two "shades" of himself that are incapable of physical interaction with the world. Cyrus will have control over all three, with him seeing in real time what his shades see. They aren't entirely there, and will often phase in and out of view. They are translucent in nature, making it painfully clear who the real Cyrus is. Furthermore, they are more random in their actions than Cyrus. While Cyrus might have one wave, the possible outcomes will often trail behind much alike in his first ability except instead of just showing the wave motion, you will see things like the middle finger, a fist, or a peace sign as opposed to the traditional notion of a wave. The problem using this ability is he has to control both the shades and himself at the same time. Often times he will trip, be painfully unaware of something right in his face as trying to digest the sheer amount of information from three separate entities overwhelms him. He can, however, re-trigger this ability and pull his physical form to one of the shades; causing the illusion to disappear. Again, he has very little control of this ability and will sometimes be pulled to a singular shade by accidentally thinking about it.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MOUNTAIN ⫻ Once Cyrus is in the presence of the mountain, his abilities generally become more controllable. In the first form, the presence of the mountain extends his control by another thirty seconds and allows him to reactivate his ability once more. In its second form, he gains a stronger link with the shades that allow them to move and act with less mental input from himself.
LIMITS ⫻ In the first form, he is limited to a thirty-second window and he must have a clear mental picture of where he was before he can pull himself back. He also does not have the ability anywhere close to being mastered and sometimes, after he activates the ability, he will be pulled to a random spot without warning. In addition, while in the second form, he is limited by his mind. He has trouble controlling both shades let alone both shades and himself at the same time. Furthermore, accidentally thinking of a shade has proven to potentially send him to the shade's location; with comical results.
WEAKNESSES ⫻ Cyrus's ability doesn't necessarily have too many weaknesses due to its relatively low-yield nature. Using it a often takes a toll on his body, and excessive use will cause nosebleeds, headaches, and may even knock him unconscious.
