There's plenty of space for OCs in the following RP ideas, including one that demands them!
Please see the "Canon or OC?" hiders beneath each title for specific details.

Also don't take the banner to mean each respective RP is meant to be that iteration of X-Men. 
They're just visuals to make this interest check more enticing.



So ideas typically come to me first as isolated scenes that prove catalyst for entire concepts; in "playing" with part of a thing, I find the compelling connective tissue for a whole thing. I finally had the thought if that works for me, maybe it's a way to go in attracting others.

So you'll find most of the Checks below presented in "scene format" (others will be in a more standard, description format). That is not to say the ideas exist only as these scenes -or that the following scenes will even appear as is in the course of the actual RP; they're pitches not outlines- in my head there's far more to them, but they're ones I'm not interested in playing out just by myself. 
I more want to see where they go than I want to lead where they go. In other words, I've thought them over enough that you don't have to worry about this being aimless, but I'm looking forward to the directions you bring to the table.

A whole point of RPing is exploring a world outside of one's own mind, and that's what I'm here for; the collaboration of it.

Clarification: I don't expect to play all the characters I write for in these scenes.


Something I want to clarify about playing canon:
I actively dislike when "fan fiction" feels like the writers are just making use of an established world of characters as a short cut. It should not feel like these characters are just "wearing the suit" and going by the names of canon with no respect to who they are.

That being said, with years worth of history (and contradictions within it) this shouldn't feel overwhelming with stringent adherence to canon details. It should definitely feel like we're in the X-Men's world and these are those characters, but how I've been enjoying adapting it most is like a riff 🎶 more than a reproduction.

I'm quite interested in exploring mutations (doing something unusual with familiar ones, combining powers, etc.), "slice-of-mutant-life" a.k.a. how does having an X-Gene alleviate or compound certain experiences (such as in my second idea below), and the humanity factor. Not as in, homo sapiens, but like "heroes are human" -- the X-Men are still people trying to live their lives and/or cope.

I really vibe with the Civil Rights aspect of X-Men, how mutantcy can be a stand in for any marginalized or persecuted demographic or experience, and that's the sort of stuff I want to be a throughline.

Canon Roles that could be filled by OCs:
Xavier's "Son" (only key requirements: they're Xavier's offspring -doesn't need be a son- with intense powers).
In a facility, and a room not unlike a prison visiting area, Cyclops and Xavier are in the heat of battle against Proteus; the recently revealed son of Charles Xavier.

Presently, Xavier has been knocked from his wheelchair while a ways beside him, Cyclops is picking himself up from a knock of his own - the room thoroughly wrecked with its tables and chairs broken and strewn.

Proteus is ramping up - intent on destroying his father and the one his father actually cared about.

Xavier (emotionally, painfully, worked up): "You asked for my guidance, Scott, as you approach fatherhood -- SEE the kind of father I am and know NOW to LOOK ELSEWHERE!"

But Cyclops stares steadily at Xavier - until Proteus' movements shift his attention.

To this point, Cyclops' optic blasts have been virtually ineffective against Proteus; absorbed or deflected --he's been too quick in noticing the blasts for Cyclops to catch him off guard beyond once, that blast not dialed up to full. Cyclops was unwilling to go that hard against a kid, Xavier's no less; unaware then that he should've.

Seeing Proteus' latest intent, Cyclops makes a decision-
-pushing himself up the rest of the way, he quickly closes the distance between himself and Xavier in time to take a crashing blow intended for the latter; much more vulnerable than the younger Cyclops clad in his combat costume.

"NHAHHHH!" Cyclops groans; falling to his hands and knees over Xavier - just barely able to keep from falling flat.

Xavier: "You FOOL, Scott Summers! To risk your life for me, when YOU have a famil-"

"You are also my family." He catches his breath, "and I'll manage this," 
he rises with new purpose, a new plan, facing Proteus once more, "I was raised to."

Cyclops starts walking closer to Proteus, firing a series of short blasts---missing his target with every one...

Proteus swings at him with another psionically extended arm.

Cyclops ducks, then finally aims a proper blast at his adversary's centre.

Proteus absorbs the blast as before -- but in paying attention to that and his approaching foe, Proteus] neglected to pay attention to all the previous, short blasts which from point of discharge, had been bouncing off the scattered objects and now, from multiple points, collide at once!

He howls as he finally takes damage --another direct blast dealing more while his defenses are still down --Cyclops dials it up.

But Proteus isn't through just yet; a final show before he succumbs --he psionically shoots Cyclops' blast back at him, its properties changed so Cyclops feels the impact "AUHH!!!!"--

--flung back as though hit by a car

--CCrrRAACcK as he slams into the wall.

At separate ends of the room, both now lay -defeated.

Xavier looks between them. 

Scott's overcome with pain --now in a fight to breathe.

Proteus is injured, extent unknown, yet he stares at his father with a strange look...expectation?
He's waiting to see what he'll do....Who will he go to?

His rage may burn anew if his father cares first, cares more, for his "other son".... and if he comes to himself instead, would it only be with that thinking..

In my head this one is Jean Grey & Scott, but the idea can be explored with OCs (obviously with different mutations etc. so it's original all through; one could be non-mutant)
In the Utopia Era of the comics, there was "Proposition X - an initiative that would require mandatory chemical birth control for all mutants". While we don't need to replicate that, consider what minds like that would think of a mutant already in-utero? Or do we explore "Proposition X" - what new pressures and persecution Jean Grey and Cyclops might face. Do they meet others in their same predicament - already in the throes of what "Proposition X" would seek to prevent?

Note: I wrote the "Scenes" before coming across this, so they don't reflect that xploration, but easily could be intensified. 
They are, after all, just example scenes to set minds going. Not set in stone.
Jean's at the obvious point of her second trimester. 
She and Scott are trying to enjoy a walk through a park, when Jean becomes inundated with the thoughts of the nosy minds around them:

'Is she expecting? Isn't he a mutant?'

'Wonder what the kid's gonna' look like?'

'Well I'd be interested in dating one, but I wouldn't go that far.'
'I hope she had a choice in the matter. Then again, I hope she wouldn't have chosen this.'

'Isn't he the one with the doom ray eyes? Bringing a child into that, how irresponsible.'

'I was kind of hoping mutants were one of those infertile species.'

'Is she a mutant too? Does this make her one if she wasn't before?'

'Sorry life that kid's gonna' have.'
'Pretty bold of them in this climate.

'They should be ashamed!'

'Aren't they both mutants? That kid doesn't have a chance!'

'Will it have powers like theirs? Or will it be worse?'

'Better hope it doesn't have his eyes.'

Scott takes notice of Jean, now paused with a strained look on her face. After all the times they've been through, he recognizes psychic interference in his partner when he sees it. He looks out across the park. 

When most expectant women were experiencing morning sickness, Jean seemed to bypass that, instead experiencing recurring lack of telepathic control. It was worse in crowded areas -they'd thought the park was open enough- but it could happen any time. Interestingly, Scott's thoughts weren't often grabbed unintended, though Jean could occasionally transmit to him when not meaning to; either her own or the ones she was experiencing.

On this occasion he was deaf to the thoughts, but could guess by where everyone's attention's was that they weren't simply wayward. These were directed at them, because of what he and Jean were. 

This gave him a pretty good idea of the type of the thoughts going around.
He reverted attention: "Just focus on us." 

Scott was a reliable ground for her; he could often "relieve these symptoms" just by being actively present.

The trouble in this case was, the thoughts Jean was receiving were tainting the suggested focus.
Her eyes have shut as she tries to block them out.

Scott changes tact quickly: "Let's go," laying his hand on her arm and gently pushing, he starts guiding her away.

They barely get a few steps: "Stop."

Scott does, but he's puzzled.

Suddenly a psychic pulse goes out --even Scott is affected; everyone reacting as though suddenly hit by a staggering headache. 

Jean has gone to her knees, Scott as well, one hand on his head, the other concernedly returned to Jean.

Already the pain is subsiding. But now there's a palpable change to the air of the park. 
Most behave as if Jean and Scott aren't even there. 

One person does come up to them, however: "Is your wife okay? Should I call an ambulance?"

Scott is helping Jean back up. "We're alright. Thank you."
The stranger gives a kind nod. "Strange, wasn't that?" She looks up at the sky. "Probably some radio wave test or something," she adds absently while she begins walking away.

Two other people can be heard in the distance:
"Drone emissions."
"Is that even a thing?"

Scott: "Are you okay?"
Jean: "....let's just get home."

They don't discuss it on the way there, but once back.

Jean: "How could I have done that?"

"There was no helping it, no different than somebody not minding their own business with me and knocking my glasses off," but his tone betrays his attempts to calm her; he'd still feel responsible in that situation. 

Scott sighs, going for a concrete reassurance: "Everyone was alright."

"But what will this mean for us, now?"

"Since we went down too, I don't think anyone realized what actually happened."

Jean shakes her head - he doesn't realize either: "After the outburst, if you could've heard the difference-- I wiped their minds of anything to do with our mutantcy! I altered people's memories without even trying."

Comprehendingly Scott stares,
then takes her into his arms: "We will figure this out."

They hadn't thought the choice would be like this.

flashback to earlier in Jean's pregnancy

She was still on active duty. Actually, none of the other X-Men even knew. Then a direct impact had Cyclops and Jean reacting different than they would otherwise have.

Later, alone in the Med Bay, Scott let out a breath of relief at the word they were both okay.
"We can't have you in a position to be put at risk like that again."

He said it not over-protectively; matter-of-fact. Jean was a responsible, rational adult as he was, and he didn't need her powers to know she was thinking the same thing. It hadn't needed to be said.

But it was something to talk about. The first "big change" they'd known was coming. Now here it was.
Jean sighed. Being an X-man was a meaningful part of her life, and when their mission wasn't too dire a circumstance, she enjoyed the challenge of it; being able to stretch her powers. 

She eyed Scott. "It's different now thinking of even you risking your life. I'm not the only one who could lose you."

". .the next generations are who we fight for." Sighing, he turned off the medical monitor. Turning to Jean on the med table as he stepped closer. "Yet if I'm out on a mission I know I'll feel like I should be here." His fingers brushed over the side of her abdomen, not yet indicative of the life inside. "But if I stay here I know I'll feel like I should've been out there. . ."

Getting off the med table, Jean brought her hand to his chest. "So maybe you consider reserve? You'll go only when you're absolutely needed."

He brought his hand up to hers.

Jean: "And maybe I can find a remote way to stay active. Take over Charles' direction via Cerebro..."

Now here they were, faced with the extremes of each choice.

The X-Men weren't far, fighting the latest against the humans who hated and feared them most.
They were already down members and needed Cyclops.

Jean was on the verge of another psychic outburst brought on by the inundation of hate and fear she couldn't block out. She needn't Scott as her ground. 

He hadn't managed to be that time back in the park, but they'd worked on it since, and she knew he could at least help her endure it for the duration of the fight. 

But how much longer would it go on, and how would it end, if he didn't join it?

Put another way, he had two options:
Leave Jean and risk the release of an intense psychic assault on "humankind".
Stay away from the fight and risk the fallout to mutantkind if the X-Men go down.

As one he was sworn to protect the very "humanity" that was driving this dichotomy.
What choice did he actually have?

Cyclops has joined the Hellfire Club!
Do they accept the ex-X-Man fully or only on the surface?
What history of his and The White Queen's plays a part?
And is anything really as it seems?
Given the canons we'd have in play here, it's going to come up, so how it would be handled is in a consent-focused manner: 
The Player of the Mind Controller would contact the player of the character they'd like to control, laying out specifically what they have in mind. No mind control scenarios will be played out unless both/all parties are in complete agreement. For added security, if this a Group RP and I am neither the Mind Controller nor the Mind Controlee, as GM I will expect the Mind Controller to contact me after a scenario has been agreed on, so I can sign off on it and namely clarify with the Controllee that interpretations match up and they're really agreeing to what they think they are. 

A "yes" can turn into a "no" at any time if a party decides they don't want to continue down this route. 
If that be the case, we'll work in an Xpedient fix to end that disconcerting mind control!
Or, if one wishes they'd never subjected a character to mind control at all, well, that will have to be on a case-by-case basis depending what's happened with it in the story. We may be able to spin it as something that didn't really occur, or we may not. 

If the player of a mind controller wants to use their power on NPCs, for now -assuming you won't be senseless with it- I'll say you can be free with it if the NPCs aren't other canons. If they are, check it with me first.

Roles that could be filled by OCs:
Members of the X-Men besides Cyclops & Jean Grey; Adversaries; Other.
Previously....the X-Men enter a perimetre unaware of the psychic-trap that's set there. While Jean Grey wasn't with them on this mission, Cyclops' psychic link with Jean carried enough of a signature to trigger the trap, causing a destructive entity to enter his mind.

Learning it would be catastrophic to actual psychics and fearing it might piggy-back on his link to Jean, Cyclops employed techniques Jean taught him some years prior to lock off parts of his mind, or in this case, lock the entity in a place all it's own.

While this was thought successful for a while, recently Cyclops has been plagued by psychic assaults at night: the entity is trying to break out, and a mind is most vulnerable while asleep.

He's been managing subconsciously to fend off these assaults, but each day feels like the first after an illness; it's hard to say at this point who's winning in this battle of attrition.

Meanwhile, there's the matter of who left the trap in the first place. Was it meant specifically for Jean, who wasn't with the X-Men that day only by chance? 
Or are there more psychic traps out there, and if so, what is the purpose of this targeting?

These questions take centre stage while Cyclops' plight persists in the background; the answers to all may be the answer for one.
If it's not too late.
Breathing sounds, not restful. The sound and feel of a shift of position, an unusual breath, then the bed dipping down slightly, briefly, before being vacated altogether. 

A tap, water, a vessel being filled. The water's turned off. Vessel replaced.
After a moment, clothing being removed, then damp material hitting the bottom of an empty laundry bin.

A dresser drawer opening, closing.
Silence.

Jean* turns over, pushing herself up on one arm as she looks at the dark figure standing by the dresser.
"Scott?"

"I'm just grabbing a fresh shirt. Night sweats. Just give me a minute." He had the shirt still in his hand, letting his upper body air dry a little longer. Letting the vague sick feeling dissipate a bit. The night sweats were new, the latter wasn't.

Jean feels his side of the bed. The sheet and pillow are damp. She gets out.

A drawer of a separate dresser opens - her powers make quick work of changing the sheets and pillow case.

Scott pulls the shirt on as he walks over to where Jean stands beyond the foot of the bed. Holds her with one arm, kisses her, then turns to go back to his side.

Jean catches his hand, redirecting him back to her. A caress to the side of his face, before her hand wraps around the back of his head, taking him in a tender embrace. "I thought I'd have some answer by now."

"I'm not going anywhere."

That was several nights ago.

The psychic assaults were getting worse. Not so fast as night-by-night, but definitely in that direction, never the other; never less. The waning restfulness of these nights caused him to require it more, occasionally to sleep deeper. The correlation was apparent: deeper sleep = stronger attacks, and so the cycle went. 

This was exactly what Cyclops had considered at the outset of this, why he didn't just try sleeping as minimally as he could sustain or pull periodic all-nighters. This wasn't something you could "starve out -he would only run himself down faster that way and, eventually, into a very desperate place. Not an option. Though it was likely to be a consequence if they didn't figure this out.

Last night, had been a hard one.

Cyclops was starting to feel the tiredness more. There was no waking him once the attacks started, either. It was as though his consciousness was locked away with the entity until the battle subsided for the night. Luckily it never lasted the whole of it. The duration, in fact, didn't follow the same upward arch of the intensity. It varied. So far Cyclops could consistently grab a few undisturbed hours on either side of the attack, though the strain of it once it did come on and was through, rather wiped out what rest he gained leading into it. The best he got was anything after.

He sighed. Presently this was a stamina game, not a strategic one -there was no "Plan 2" to be had. Not one he was ready to call "acceptable", anyway.

Xavier and Jean had been in discussion about ways they could infiltrate --they thought they might be landing on some answer of psychic defense for themselves in order to do this safely-- to refortify, at least, the "doorway" the entity kept seeking to compromise night after night. Ultimately to remove it, once they figured out those particulars.

But Scott wasn't so sure about that. Catastrophic to psychics, that's what Xavier had said.
He wanted neither of them, especially Jean, anywhere near something "catastrophic". 

He sighed again and -finishing getting into his combat costume- refocused his mind to the task more immediately at hand as he strode towards the Blackbird to join his fellow X-Men.

"Sorry," he said briefly for keeping them waiting -probably only 5 minutes, but still, usually they were geared-up and going more in unison. This ordeal was affecting his concentration -when he was off task. "Coordinates input, Storm**?" he asked of his co-pilot as he took his spot in the other front seat. Now, he was mission-minded. Being an X-Man was his thing: it "woke him up".

Jean was seated behind him -she might've piloted or co-piloted, except she had a distinct navigational assignment this mission. Regardless if a mind was being entered or not, they all still had "signals". Scott's wavelength had an altered "feel" to it since the invasion; a unique signature. It was either one piece to a whole or one of many, but Jean was positive she could identify if the source, or another piece -another trap- was nearby. 

For security, they had recently devised and equipped the Blackbird with a special psi-shield so Jean could psychically project -and probe- out, but nothing could come in, unless it was Xavier's mental frequency.

Based on the triggering mechanism of the first trap, there had to be two points it could be between. A "trip wire" scenario, which couldn't exist in the air anyway; even if their psi-shield had faults, Jean was safe joining them at least until they had to deploy on land.

Rounding out the team on this particular mission, was Angel***.

The year is 2030-something. The world has changed. . .Mutants are now being actively reported, hauled off the streets; what progress had been made has taken large steps backwards. Where are the X-Men in all this? Or even The Brotherhood? Nobody seems to have heard of them. Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters doesn't seem to have existed. The building stands but it's never been a school. Who owns it is unknown. "Charles Xavier", "Scott Summers", "Jean Grey", "Ororo Munroe", "Erik Lehnsherr", "Raven Darkholme" et al aren't names on any registry.

But at least one individual, "Master EffeX", remembers - the school, the X-Men, those people - they had existed! 
. . . .hadn't they?

Is this another universe? 
A mass cover up? 
Or was it all an illusion?

It's like a dream yet more than one, but Master EffeX remembers only up to a point. Why doesn't he know what happened? There's a blank space in his mind....and he's not sure where or to whom he can go to fill it in. 

As time goes on, his memories become more muddled. The scenes change. They're at once what he remembers and not. 
But he can't let them go. . . .

Inspired by Wolverine and the X-Men episode #23 'Shades of Grey': what if Jean had a loss of memories (amnesia) no psychic could help her get back?

While inspired by Wolverine and the X-Men this RP would not take place in that universe. The other members of the X-Men, the present state of their world, where in their relationship Cyclops and Jean Grey are, and the events leading to Jean's amnesia will be ours to craft.

What will it be like for her not only relearning who she is, but what it's like to be a mutant in this world?
How will her relationships be informed - will they diverge from how they were?
Cyclops: "You should find some place else to be for a while, Logan."
Wolverine: "Not a chance. Look, Jean chose you before because you two were already committed. Maybe now that she doesn't have all that baggage in her head, we can see if she'd make the same choice."
Cyclops raises his hand to his visor just as a voice speaks from behind them: "What's going on here?"
It's Jean.
"..nothing. Logan was just asking me for a spar."
Jean looks between them, unsure. "Isn't there a training room here for that?"
Wolverine: "You're right. I've got a better idea, anyway." He looks of the mind to spend some time letting Jean get to know him again.
And how do her powers factor in....is control of them muscle memory, or does that have to be relearned from the ground up, too?
Jean awakes in a bed in the medical bay, hearing voices. They sound so close they could be her own thoughts. 
Looking around, she's alone.

With a blink the voices are gone. She gets up, studying this room for a few moments before moving on, in pursuit of figuring out where she is.

It's like the scene from the first X-Men movie; Logan's first experience with the place, only not frantic. To Jean, this place feels foreign, yet harmless.

She's not long coming out of the advanced area of the mansion into the regular halls, passing by groups of mutant youth, when she's met by an older gentleman in a wheelchair and the younger one she remembers from when she woke up before; the red-tinted visor he wore then replaced with sunglasses of the same shade, despite their being indoors.

After an exchange, the older gentleman suggests a small tour.

As they're going along -Jean: "So you built this place?"

"Yes. So young mutants with powers may learn to control and develop them, and those without may simply learn, in an environment which welcomes them."

To a certain confused look of Jean's, he explains: "Many in this world are not like us."

"Many just don't like us," the shaded one adds, or clarifies, though there's a certain sympathy in his expression that seems directed towards her.

Scott comes to one of the Mansion's libraries where he knows Xavier is conducting another psychic session with Jean, trying to recover her memories.

They've just finished. Xavier wheels up to Scott. "Still nothing I try has lead to any progress. The only change is to her emotional state," he looks back into the room where Jean still sits, now alone. "She's understandably discouraged." By his tone of voice he is as well.

Before going on his way, Xavier touches Scott's arm in brief acknowledgement of the deeper challenge this presents to him.

Scott enters the room, taking a seat in a chair facing the couch Jean sits on. 
He eyes the book her hands are clasped over; one of her favourite volumes of poetry. Xavier must've been seeing, along with the psychic probing, if familiar words might trigger something.

Jean: "What if I never get my life back?"

"..You will, though maybe the hard way," he's forced to admit -relearning instead of remembering.

She looks up at him: "But that will never be the same. How we live is informed by our life experiences. I have none, now," her gaze lowers; eyes closing.

Scott's brow creases. He puts his hand over hers. "Some things are ingrained within you. Your body, or subconscious, will remember things even if you don't have the events and the reasons."

She looks again to him; a stranger still, yet...there's something she at least trusts about him she can't otherwise explain. 
The Professor, the others she's "met", this "home" itself...there's something innate here; peace at least in the meantime.

Format/Character Distribution
Whatever will work nicely; I can double up to make any of these with a larger main cast work as 1x1s; you can double up. Some will play grander as a Small or Large Group, however. We'll feel it out. I'm cool with PM or standard thread (so if you wanna' just give it a try without pressure of other eyes on you, or whatever the reason, we can "keep to ourselves"; even move to thread afterward if we think we've got something we want to hit the road with).
Violence
So long as we're not indulging in it I'm pretty chill. If it serves a character or story purpose, even better - Does a teammate (or civilian) get thrown in the way of Cyclops' optic blast and now we're dealing with the aftermath? Does Jean come into their room to find Cyclops seemingly hacked n' slashed by an absent Wolverine, alive but just barely clinging to life, unable to relay what happened?
Relationships
I'm not into smut nor lust. If we want to indulge in some sensuality, that's cool. Presently I'm also more into love than romance. Flowers and candlelight are nice, but "seeing" and "hearing" your partner, being present with them when they're going through something, that's where it's at. Really I'm into connection in general; not just between partners, but platonic, familial. Let's Xplore the depths of it all.
