Braden had been uncharacteristically quiet standing in the hallway of the patient’s quarters whilst Denis brandished his weapon of choice - multiple bombs scattered around the room with the detonator right in his control. He had left his puppets back in his room in his haste to check outside when Thomas’s announcement rang from the intercoms. It was rare that he would be without his precious puppets, yet here he was, standing amongst the crowd watching in horror as they became pawns in Thomas’s ever complicated game of chess with the mastermind.

The Phoenix Project sounded like something out of a silly game, there was no possible way someone could get resurrected. What was stopping Thomas from simply not following through with his promise after everything was done? Turning to Denis, Braden began to speak. Whether if it was out of fear for his life, or to bring some sense into the spy’s head out of some misguided sense of good in his heart, he didn’t know.

“You’ll die too if you blow us up, you know that right? You know there are some people that believe in their ego more than Thomas’s plan, so why gamble your life away and not see your father again?”

Jezebel looked over her shoulder. “Braden! When did you get here?” But she was totally ignored by the two men.

”I know I not smart, but Thomas is.” Denis's arm stiffened. ”If I die here, he just bring me back. He need us now. We need him.” Denis's thumb hovered over the detonator while Thomas and Davis continued to talk in the background. ”No one need to die now.”

“You’ve seen the plans for the machine, correct? How do you know it really works? That it’ll bring your father back the same way he was before. Thomas is an infinite, he’s not god.”

Denis grit his teeth. ”I know I not smart... but Thomas is! He explain it to me but I not quite understand. He in phoenix project, it will work!”

Was this progress? Braden wasn’t sure. “Yes, Thomas is smart. I’d say that was hot if he was older.” Braden then cleared his throat, going off track. “Thomas is a biomechanic. He can probably bring back your father, sure, but just the shell of his body would be there. How can Thomas promise that he would be anything like the father you know? Surely if Thomas was that smart, he would explain to his only ally how the project works.”

”He did explain, I just no understand it all!” Denis lowered his arm and pointed at Braden. ”How you know it no work? Where's your proof it no work?” He took a step forward. ”We so close to stopping Davis, while you all cower and do exactly what he want! Killing and being killed! No hero do those things for a mad man. Thomas different! Thomas smart! Thomas do what you all scared to do. Thomas and me be heroes. We save everyone, we raise everyone who die.”

Braden had no proof that it couldn’t work. He was banking on the idea that Thomas’s talent could only do so much to bring someone back to life. Was a person really a person if they did not have their memories? Who knew philosophy would be the topic that he’d use to try and survive. “You kill us now, and Davis will bring in more infinites. We are expendable to him. So many of us have died, there are simultaneous games happening at once, but even if people survive they are shuffled to the next game only to be killed again! Davis does not give two fucks about us dying right now, he probably has the next twenty infinites on standby in the damn elevators right now ready to take our place in this game. We are not important, Denis, that’s why we are in this stupid game.”

”But this only candidate's killing game.” Denis waved his finger at everyone standing in the hallway. ”Someone here important to him. Someone need to be selected.” Again, he took another step forward. Everyone was stepping back or at least repositioning themselves, But Braden remained put. ”He no want us all to die here. It set him back big.”

“You think you’re special because he used the term candidate? What is this, a fucked up recruitment? If Davis thought one of us was special, why risk them being killed in the killing game? If he thought one of us was special, he would not keep bringing people into this particular game and make it more challenging for us by prolonging the game like this.” Braden crossed his arms against his chest, feet pressed firmly to the ground as if he were trying to make a point in his argument. “Denis, think about it. Thomas has the ‘key’ to reviving anyone according to you, right? What’s stopping Thomas and Davis from working together, make this into a game so even if this ‘special’ one dies, he can revive them with this piece of tech.” He sighed. “Thomas hasn’t even tried to seem like he is one of us. He’s using you to keep us hostage during night of carnage, a night where if blood is shed for his plan, it could not be used to make him the blackened.”

Denis did not fire back with a response immediately. The growing anger in his face also seemed to subside. After looking Braden up and down, Denis smiled.”You scared.” He nodded to himself, as if just confirming a successful experiment. ”When my dad on trial, I not able to do anything. I could have pulled a gun on judge and escape, but I no confident in that. Dad found guilty, executed, forgotten.” He shrugged his shoulders. ”I had no courage then. No courage to save innocent father. Too scared I would be killed. That change now. Now I have courage. I have faith in myself. I put myself here because I no want anyone else to die.” He lifted up the detonator. His thumb was no longer hovering over the button, but instead was curled around the rest of his fingers. “I no want to push button. I only do that if any of you run.” He lowered his arm back down and nodded again. “No need to fear. Have faith and it work. That what Thomas told me.” Denis turned around and walked back to where he was standing a few moments ago, leaving his back pointed at the people he was holding hostage.

Braden could almost feel himself starting to laugh. He had been in this situation once before, just without the looming bomb threat. This had to be a trap, a spy could never leave his back wide open for an attack. What a shame, Denis was quite the cutie. Braden was the least capable of physical combat out of the group there - he was certain even Jezabel could kick his ass with the trinkets the trickster carried on her body. But the finger was off the trigger. That was progress, but not the goal.

Braden charged, empty fists curled into a ball, ready to land a strike on Denis’s head.

Denis had his back turned to Braden, so of course he couldn't see if he was being attacked right away. But Braden's sudden sprint forward was something the spy's keen ears were able to pick up on. It was not unreasonable to think that Denis knew what a running man sounded like. So he looked over his shoulder just in time to see Braden tighten his fingers together and drop his fist on the back of his skull. The spy was quick to use his empty right hand to “brush” the attack off to the side, causing the swing to narrowly clip his shoulder. With the blow deflected, Denis swung his right leg behind his left to tun himself towards Braden. He used the momentum to attempt to power his left hand into Braden's chest. Denis didn't seem to be concerned about the detonator accidentally activating. He believed that he could be resurrected, after all.

Braden could not let Denis’s left hand connect with his chest, worried that the detonator would go off if he touched it. He clumsily took a few steps back, falling over from the sudden momentum awkwardly on his buttocks. From the floor, Braden tried kicking out his feet in a desperate attempt to kick Denis’s shin so he could fall over as well.

Denis must not have expected his opponent to go down so easily, because he just stood there as Braden fell to the floor and kicked at one of the spy's ankles. His stretched out stance gave him a lot of stability, but Braden was determined to bring the spy down. The kick was hard enough to make Denis lose his footing, and he fell onto one knee. It was painful, but the spy had withstood much worse. He reached out with his right hand to seize the ventriloquist's ankle.

“Braden! Like... GHHAAAHHHHH!” Jezebel must have been afraid to hit her friend, because she removed her lattice-work gauntlet and threw it to Braden. With the two of them on the floor, Denis would perhaps not be able to reach for the device as easily.

Braden kept flailing his lower legs, trying to make it difficult for the spy to grab hold of his ankle as he reached out to grab Jezabel’s tossed gauntlet. With his sitting position, it was near impossible for Braden to land a good, painful hit on Denis - not that he could do it even with all the cards in his favour anyway. He tried kicking his feet out, looking to distract Denis by aiming for his gut long enough for him to slip the gauntlet onto his right arm. It seemed to be working, but Denis was slowly rising to his feet , keeping his hands in front of Braden’s feet to shield his throat and chest from any hits.

Unfortunately in his haste trying to wear the gauntlet, Braden had squeezed the button against his palm too soon. He could see the fist attached to the glove flying in the direction of the closest bomb to them, crushing the contraption under the extended fist and causing it to detonate beside them. Now that Denis was on his feet, the had just enough time to hug the detonator against his chest and brace for impact. Bits of plastic (and Braden) flew out from the explosion like shrapnel, and the spy was thrown against the adjacent wall with a loud thud. Had the bombs on the other wall blown up as well, Denis would likely have been dead. But as evident by all the blood, Braden was the only casualty at the moment. Denis slowly uncurled his arms and looked at where Braden use to be. He hung his head, staring at the floor as the infinites erupted into screams around him.

“Uh! Wha, Gah!?” Jezebel was at a loss for words. Even in a place like this, with death being so commonplace, it was hard to grasp what had just happened. There had been a few deaths during the night of carnage, but this was the first one that had been inflicted on each other.

But Braden’s death was not a vain one. He had kept Denis distracted long enough for the others to break into Davis’s room. What would they find once inside?
still lurking

Grace wiped her face with the back of her hand and sniffed, that’s enough of that she demanded of herself and sat up and looked herself in the mirror above the small table across from her bed. She bent over the edge of the bed and rummaged through one of her bags looking for her makeup bag, when she finally found it she sat down at the table to try to salvage what was going on with her face. In the end she decided to just take all of her makeup of, just as she was done she heard a soft knock on her door. Grace walked over and opened the door to find Chris stand there with a present wrapped in the cutest wrapping paper with small paw prints all over it, she was surprised that there wasn’t some kind of bow on top though, Chris always put bows on his presents.

“Oh Chriiiiiiis” Grace whined taking the present and setting it down before pulling her main boy in to great big hug “I love you.” she whispered in to his shoulder. She released him and gestured him to come in and closed the door behind him. Grace picked up the present and started to unwrap it and open the box, inside was 3 different scarfs for George the corgi to add to his collection. Grace looked up at her best friend tears welling up in her eyes again, she was quick to wipe them away. She was just so glad she had him in her life so the tears were more happy this time around “Thank you” she said softly.

As a way to celebrate the upcoming union, Chris had bought presents for everybody. Though he didn't know everybody in the wedding party, particularly from the bride's side, he still tried to make an effort. What kind of party would it be if someone was left out? Getting Grace's gift was the easiest of them all. Christopher knew how much she adored her little corgi, so the cute scarfs he found on Etsy would definitely be appreciated. After all, who can hate a dapper dog in a cute scarf?

Seeing Grace tear up after opening the gift made him want to hug her again. And, well, he did. He gave her a comforting hug, holding on until the tears stopped. “How are you feeling?” He asked her.

Grace sniffed once more “Oh you know I’m holding up, I guess I’ve been sensing it for a while but I thought the jerk would at least wait until after the wedding!” she tried to make the situation lighter with a small laugh. She laid her head down on Chris’s lap and peered up at him “How about you? Are you ok with all of this?” she asked.

Christopher clicked his tongue disapprovingly. From what he could recall, Tristan was always a selfish guy; never considering Grace's feelings because of his extreme ego. Even though he didn't want to see Grace hurt, Christopher was glad that he was gone. “This break up is Tristan's loss, not yours.” Despite sounding like a typical bestie from a teen rom-com, Grace would know he was speaking honestly.

When Grace shifted the conversation towards himself, Christopher sighed. He began playing with her hair, giving her a half-hearted head massage whilst she laid on his lap in a sorry attempt to distract himself. “I'm... dealing.” He returned with a vague answer.

Grace sighed and closed her eyes as Chris played with her hair, he was right as much as she was about being dumped she couldn't help but feel a little bit relieved of not having to deal with all the crap that came with dating someone like Tristan. As she laid there with Chris's hands doing their magic, she could feel the stress and tension ebbing away. This is what she had been needing, Grace scolded herself for not telling Chris about her break up straight from the beginning.

She opened her eyes to look at him again as he answered her question with a deflecting answer. Grace made a concerned face“Are you though? In a healthy way? Not like me...” she laughed again. Usually Grace was the one who had her boys in check but lately she had been swamped at work and can't even remember when they all had been together at their regular bar. Darien has been busy obviously but how long has it been since she saw Leo? And now with the break up she has not been as stable as she usually likes to be.

“I’ve had some time to think about it and… I cannot be the one to stop them from pursuing their happiness if it’s with each other.” It was a tough pill to swallow, but if you were truly in love you’d want to see them happy. “I’m Darien’s friend before anything else, I can’t ruin this wedding for him.” His response sounded strangely rehearsed, but as long as Grace could understand his feelings, it didn’t matter.

Grace nodded and bit her lip, his response echoing in her mind. She knew she should feel the same but something has been bugging her ever since Darien and Daphne got engaged a year ago.

Rather than dwelling on it, Christopher got an idea. “When we were checking in, I found that this hotel has an arcade. How about we cheer up with some games? I could text and see if Leo is up for some ass whooping.” He offered. Christopher entertained the idea of inviting Darien briefly, before ultimately deciding against it. If anybody asks, he could simply say that he didn’t want to remind Grace about her breakup.

Grace sat up and her whole face lit up when she heard games “Oh yes! I will whoop both your asses if they have DDR!” she ran her hands through her hair to tame it in to place. “Yeah call him over and we can leave after I fix myself up!” She chirped already in a better mood grabbing some fresh clothes and her makeup bag as she made her way into the bathroom.

Leo had only just made himself comfortable in his room, which he honestly found quite to his liking, when phone once again began to buzz. He dreaded the thought of even more work-related matters on his supposed holiday. However, he was pleasantly surprised by the text from his colleague that was on holiday as well. He grinned at the invitation to the arcade with Grace. Not only had he not seen Grace in a while, but he’d never pass up the chance to kick their butts. He texted back approvingly, and got ready to leave.

When Leo arrived, he was able to meet Grace and Christopher at the lobby by the entrance to the arcade. Christopher was the first to wave his colleague and study buddy over. He raised his voice so he could be heard over the excitable Vegas crowd heading into the adjacent casino, beckoning Leo to join them.

Grace spun around when she heard Chris greet their friend “Leo!” she exclaimed almost running towards the man, he was a sight for sore eyes and she hadn’t realized how much she had missed him. She flung her arms around him when she reached her friend “I’ve missed you so much!” she had to hold back so to not start crying again. She pulled away from him and started to straighten his shirt, a habit she had with all of them. She then punched him lightly on the arm “Thanks for calling and checking in… douche!” she smiled widely at her old friend.

Leo bore a wide grin as he found his two friends. He returned Chris’s greetings before finding himself in Grace’s arms. “It’s been a while, Grace. It’s good to see you!” He said back. He was calm and reserved, but that didn’t take away from the genuinity of the statement. He responded to her punch in kind by relentlessly ruffling her hair. “Same goes for you, dumbass! A thousand calls a day, and not one from you.” He smiled back.

She tried to dodge his hand as he ruffled her now pristinely styled hair but to no good “Hey! I’m not supposed to be the one who calls… I’m the girl! You should all be showering me with love!” she turned to face Christopher “Isn’t that right? You call me every day.” she reached out and pulled him closer with her arm around Chris’s waist.

Christopher snickered, allowing Grace to pull him in. “It helps if you call Leo yourself. Sometimes he forgets that his phone is good for not only receiving, but sending calls too.” He jested, before pushing Leo and Grace in the direction of the arcade. “Now come on, let's make Leo regret not calling you.”

“Don’t hate me because I’m popular!” Leo said to Chris in a mock sassy tune. Then he headed into the arcade at Chris’s wish. It had been some time since he had visited an arcade, but he was certain his skills wouldn’t fail him. “Time to beat some high scores, oh and your asses while I’m at it.” He challenged them, his confidence as present as ever. “Ladies first, Grace, pick your poison.”

The arcade was loud and crowded, just as Grace liked it. She stepped in front of the two boys and scoped out their choices. If Seara resort has done something right it was this arcade, they had just about everything from old to brand spanking new and imported from Japan. Gracie browsed the machine until she came to a halt in front of one particular machine. “So how about some classic Tekken 7? Anyone think they can beat my girl Ling Xiaoyu?” She wiggled her eyebrows at favorite boys.

Christopher was never the gaming type. He was part of the minority, growing up without a gaming console (or a sibling to play with) so reading became his passion. So when Grace suggested a two player fighting game, Christopher was certain that he was going to lose so... “I volunteer Leonard as my champion.” He pushed Leo closer, as if to further his point with a wicked grin.

Leonard shrugged as he was pushed forward. “Guess someone is afraid. Anyway, let me show you how it’s done.” He wore his signature cocky grin as he took his place next to Grace on the machine and casually picked his boy Steve.

She scoffed as Leo stepped up “Typical… Honestly so toxic!” Grace said sarcastically and grinned at him. It was a tough 5 rounds but in the end Grace had to accept defeat with two rounds to tree, she slammed her fist down on the machine as the final K.O flashed on the screen. With a sour look on her face she looked up at them “Whatever! I need a drink!” she snapped and started in the direction of the bar.

With Grace gone for a moment, Christopher resisted the urge to follow after to make sure she was okay. But just barely. Instead, he turned to Leonard. “I need to talk to you, but you gotta promise me it'll stay between us.” It was likely that Grace hadn't had to chance to tell Leonard yet about her break up, and the last thing she would need is for him to bring up Tristan after spending some time cheering her up.

“Grace isn't doing so well. Tristan broke up with her just before the trip.” He informed Leo in a hushed tone. “I'm trying to cheer her up but I'll need your help with that as well.” It was clear Christopher didn't want to linger around the Tekken machine for long, lest he risk losing Grace in the boisterous crowd hovering near the bar.

”Is that so?” Leo said in response. ”Can’t say I’m too sad about that. I didn’t like the guy anyway!” He said, knowing Grace wasn’t around to hear it. ”That said, I do feel for Grace. So let’s do a good job cheering her up, shall we?” He nodded, then dragged Christopher along towards Grace.

Grace tapped the bartop with her nails trying to get the attention of the bartender. When he finally finished with the guys the was in front of her she smiled and nodded at him. “Hey, can I have 3 IPA’s?” when she had gotten the beers Grace showed of her former waitressing skills by carrying the boys beers in one hand and drinking from her own glass as she walked over to the men approaching.

Christopher and Leonard soon met with Grace by a recently emptied table. Christopher quickly cleared the table of old rubbish before joining the duo. He wasn’t certain whether telling Leo Grace’s personal problems was the right thing to do, but he only meant well. And he was sure that Leo would want to know so he could help.

From a glance it didn't appear that Grace was suffering all that much with get break-up. But Leo had to wonder how much she was simply keeping herself strong to not ruin the mood. That sounded like Grace. Another part of him wondered if this was the beginning of her drinking her troubles away. That sounded less like her, right? Was that right?

Regardless, he accepted the drink gratefully and promised himself he'd keep an eye on her. He couldn't let Chris shoulder all of the burden, and the best thing they could do was make this one kick-ass trip.

“Cheers!”

Unlike his fellow guests, Christopher’s night was spent… doing nothing. There was nothing to pack in haste, nor was he feeling any travelling jitters as he had the best partner he could ask for travelling with him to Nevada the following day. He wondered whether he should send a message to Grace, to remind her to pack plenty of sunscreen for herself and her partner, but a quick look at the clock on the wall reminded him it was far too late for any friendly chat.

Then what can he do?

It was late enough that sleep was a viable option. But why couldn't he sleep? Well. Christopher was well aware why, and he almost wished that he'd left the packing till tonight so he would have more time to... not think. To hear Darien would be the first out of his admittedly too large circle of friends was not much of a surprise. Everybody knew that the gentle giant would find his perfect match first, but was he Daphne Seara's perfect match?

Christopher could not comment.

Sleep eluded him, much to his dismay. By the time Christopher had drunk his weight in coffee, it was time for him to take the cab to the airport. A quick scan of his mental checklist reminded him that he had everything he needed to avoid an unfortunate situation. With absolute certainty, Christopher climbed into his cab ride.

At the airport, Christopher quickly reminded himself of the plan. With Leonard out of town for his business venture, Christopher and Grace were left to travel together from JFK to McCarren airport this morning, with Grace's boyfriend, Tristan, joining the wedding party that following Saturday for the rehearsal dinner. Christopher first waited beside security, watching time and passengers pass by him but no sign of the one he wanted to see. With so little time left, Christopher had no choice but to follow the crowd through security. He kept his phone in hand, watching the pixels on the screen for any sign of a message but there was nothing from the girl in question. He didn't even see Grace even as he waited by the gate despite waiting a little longer and being one of the last to join the queue to board the flight.

He shot Grace another message, the final one before he was guilted into turning his cell off with a look from the stewardess. He tapped his foot against the floor, the pace growing faster as the minutes passed. Finally, once he was sure the final call was announced did he see Grace, much to his relief.

"You worried me!" The surgeon chastised, knowing that Grace was expecting such a reaction. "Was there a lot of traffic?" Grace looked too tired for her to be late because of her sleeping in, not to mention that it wasn't like Grace to sleep in so late. He adjusted his position so he could pull off his neck pillow, giving it to Grace instead as she began to tell him about Tristan.

The news made Chris want to hug the poor girl. No wonder she looked so weary. He had plenty of things to say: 'Tristan was a horrible person.' or, 'You deserve better' but none of them seemed to be right. Knowing her, she would rather be comforted than pitied. He extended his arm, allowing Grace to rest her head on his shoulder and quietly sob to herself. With the wedding incoming, Christopher knew that all the lovey-dovey behaviour from the bride and groom was sure to be a painful reminder of her break-up.

Arriving at the hotel, Christopher reluctantly let Grace trudge away into her room. The only good news was knowing that Grace's room was right across the hall. Inside his room, Christopher hung his blazers in the wardrobe and put away his toiletries before pulling out something from his bag, wrapped in gift wrap designed with puppy paw prints. He could only hope Grace would appreciate the gift at a time like this.

There was only one way to find out!

He knocked on Grace's door, checking the gift one more time before--

Oh no.

He forgot the bow.
(yeah still no header can someone please stop making me post so late)

There was much to say about the case. Nothing pleasant, however. As usual, Braden’s testimony and involvement with the case was kept to the bare minimum. All he had to prove was that he didn’t kill the crazy bitch, and that was a simple enough hurdle. At least, that’s how he remembered it. Regardless, the case was over and Braden couldn’t be happier to finally leave--

But that was the issue. The blackened was dead, and somebody had to be punished. Something something rule something. What a bother. Couldn’t they just do the thing with Mercy’s body? Pretty sure she wouldn’t mind.

“We don’t trust crazies around here.” The ironic comment was brushed aside as the court fell apart once again. As his husbando concluded the final statement, Noel was quick to pounce with surprising ferocity, taking Alice down like a lion tackling dinner.

Unsurprisingly, Alice did not respond. His analogy was almost correct: the recon was acting like a chicken. After acting so tough, she could not handle the slightest bit of confrontation. Monokuma (“the two-toned traitoring traitor”) did not help by siding with Alice, which further made Braden believe made the recon cocky.

“Now now, Lois Lane. It’s not good to gang up on the weak. I meaaaan, someone that has army training yet is has nothing to offer beyond cliched edge? Tooootally weak. Maybe once she’s done living out her angsty teen years you’ll get a real challenge. Might I suggest Justiciar? I heard they’re reeeeal strong.”

“SHUT UP!”

Krista peeled her hands from her ears, screaming at the erratic ventriloquist in particular to stop the bickering. All they did was bicker- did nobody have an ounce of sympathy for Felix? It appeared not, as Braden and Noel began to pick apart Alice’s behaviour, whilst Ice and Denis tried to act tough in front of Davis.

“Please... just stop... No more... I can't...” How many more have to die before this game would finally end? How many more had to die while she did nothing but aid the blackened in one way or another unintentionally? How many more before it was enough for Davis? Like Ice, Krista wanted to scream at the man causing them misery, but she knew it would do nothing. Even now with someone as fearsome as Ice yelling at him, Davis did. Not. Care. He was nothing more than a friend that betrayed them at their lowest point.

Did anybody care anymore? She wished so, but it seemed as if each blackened intended to prove her wrong. If they didn't care, does someone like Cyrus really care for Bliss, or Jez for Zachary? By now she was certain she was alone in this. Krista tensed as she faintly heard Davis speak her name. “-- a question. Perhaps not as precious as the phone call Justiciar stole from her, but there are no strings attached this time. Regardless of what you ask, I will answer honestly. ”

She could clearly remember what Lucas had told her before he was executed for his crime. To not waste her opportunity on a dead end, but to use it to understand who the mastermind was. But was it worth it now that they already knew who he was? Davis was standing right in front of him, giving her a second chance to finally find her reason to care.

“My brother... tell me! Is he okay?”

Krista did not care about why Davis wanted them to suffer. She could not give a damn about somebody that betrayed them. But knowing that her brother was safe would make it all worth it. That despite the suffering, she could go home to someone that cared.

“He is safe, far away from this place. Last I heard, he found the love of his life.”

Krista laughed. All she could think about was the time she accidentally walked in on her brother trying to put the moves on his nurse. Did Davis know about that too? Would Davis tell her that the nurse was the love of his life? It did not matter, because Krista collapsed to her knees with her head hanging low, tears hitting the floor in front of her.

Krista could not tell whether if she had carried herself to the exit or if she was helped by a carnage sister. She heard the distinct noise of shoes shuffling towards the rollercoaster, and her body instinctively followed far behind everybody. Her skin felt cold and clammy, but for once she left the courtroom with nothing on her mind.
