Turn 5




The Iceborn

Sigdar had slewn hundreds of Deep Ones by himself, and the rest of the Iceborn had slain hundreds as well. Still, they had lost many good warriors, and the aftermath of the battle and the deluge was devestating.
The Deep Ones had retreated back to the sea once the route had been complete, and Sigdar had finally felt the constriction of fatigue once again. His eyes returned to normal, his size diminished and the only thing that remained was the mystical runed axe and the runes that now covered his body like tattoos - matching each other.

Dag embraced his son, who embraced him back. The bearpelt over Sigdar's body was drenched in dark-red blood and the smell of salt lingered heavy in the air. The deluge had washed away much, and was still running into the seas. All the people of Dagshall gathered around Dag's longhouse up on the hill, expecting some sort of speach or at least an explanation from Sigdar.

Afterwards, there's the matter of what to do with the dead, and the surrounding lands that were damaged in the flood. Some of the pallisades had collapsed due to muddy ground, but the repairs could be done within a week. Dag and Sigdar stood upon the former field of battle, with other Iceborn carrying bodies away. What were to be done with them?

A) All dead Iceborn are to be burried together and honored in a grand ceremony to the Gods, fanfaring their way into the eternal afterlife.
B) Each dead Iceborn is returned to his or her family, who can decide for themselves how to bury their fallen.

The Antari

The scouts ventured outward into the surrounding region and found seemingly abundant wildlife. To the north the terrain was mostly open with a river cutting through the grasslands. With only a few trees and forestated areas to protect them, the animals here were mostly small like rabbit, deer, beaver and the occasional fox or other lesser predator. The river was full of fish however, and near the streams where the samon jumped up the small falls, bears could be found waiting for an easy snack. In the mountains close to Pachacamac, the scouts found mountain goats and great rams that seemed a good choice for domestication indeed, but they were such adequate climbers that they simply eluded the scouts wherever they found them.
To the west, the scouts dared not venture too deep into the unknown forest but they noted a few brown bears near the outskirts. They must live north and west of the river that cuts through the grasslands, and in the forest they found elk and moose.
Lastly, to the east, the scouts were chased out of the mirky woods by packs of wolves, more brown bears and territorially aggressive moose and elk, even reindeer. Why had the wildlife grown so hostile to the east, and not the west, the scouts wondered.
Oh, and boars. Boars were pretty much everywhere, in the grasslands, near the slopes of the hills before the mountains and the woods to the east and west.

Rano Rancor looked at his new invention. Not bad, he thought, but not a masterpiece either. He held up the crude crossbow in his hands and aimed at the target he had set up in his workshop at the opposite side of the wall. He aimed, placed the sights at the bullseye, and fired. THWOP, THUNK... The bolt hit slightly off target. No matter, he thought. Nothing that a simple adjustment can't fix.
He barely had time to finish his thought before Amari Asto himself, accompanied by a few advisors including Manco, came to his workshop to check on his progress.

"Well sire, I do believe I have a good enough prototype ready but I was just about to make some final adjustments. Would you like to try it? It's quite easy to use." he said, quickly showed Amari Asto how to properly aim and fire, and off went the bolt toward the target.
Still slightly off... Hm. Oh well. It was still a strong invention, and on par with the lizardmen's own contraptions. But would Amari Asto be pleased enough with his endeavor?

An expedition was formed. If the supposed human tribe to the south could be contacted, the Antari thought they might be allies against the lizardmen. They trained themselves, supplied themselves and finally set off toward their destination, given to them by their captive lizard, so many were uncertain of the accuracy of this intelligence. Still, they had a mission to complete and they would see it through for their people, their family and friends and their ruler. (Is Amari Asto a king?)

It occured to them once they had exited the guarded pass however that... Well, they can't just simply stroll by the lizardmen camp. They might be spotted, attacked and eaten or worse, in that order.
They came up with a few alternatives, and the man or woman who had been named expedition leader considered their options. They could either...
A) Stroll straight south, hoping to avoid the lizardmen in the mountains while they take the most direct route toward their destination.
B) Go further west around the great lake, to (hopefully) avoid the lizardmen but to complete their task at a slower rate.
C) Get as far away from the lizardmen as possible westward to completely avoid them and safely get to their destination, but cost them a lot of extra time.
D) Southeast! Of course! Obviously the mountains can't go on forever, maybe there's an easy way to the humans by going around the lizardmen no their east side.

The Children of Artemon

"Where have you been?!" the Scout-Commander demanded of his scouts. They had just returned from exploring the abandoned cave-settlements by the mountains to the north-east.
"We, erhm... We got lost." the leader of the group answered, embarassed.
"Lost?! You got lost-- ... No matter. At least you have safely returned. Now, report. What did you find?"

At first, the earie silence of the caverns and occasional echoing drip or scuffle of rocks from the elves' feet were unnerving. It's like anything that had once inhabited the cave had up and vanished into thin air. Not only the architects of the hovel-settlement, but also every bat, insect and rodent. It was completely empty of life, the black walls cementing the feeling that this place was nothing but a hole of nothingness.

Or was it?

Up ahead, something caught the light of the scouts' torches and glimmered back at them.
"Watch out!" the second-first scout exclaimed as the scout on point almost stepped over a ledge.
With elven agility, the scout quickly regained his footing and avoided certain death. The group had come into a vast grotto, with a ceiling a hundred yards high and fifty yards down. The walls all around them ran with veins of iron, silver and something else of the sort as if it just... ran out of the walls like liquid. What the third mineral was, the scouts couldn't say for they were no excavators, but they could tell it was like iron and silver in one, but seemed sturdier, at least at first glance. Thus they had come to call it "Silversteel" while they were lost in the vast cave-systems. They had found multiple shrines and hovels around the great mineral veins and deposits, with plenty of evidence to suggest the settlements were of goblin make. They seem to have been worshipping the metals in some way, perhaps as the literal lifeblood of the mountain, judging from the way the veins ran down the walls.

Other than that, the scouts had found nothing of value other than a few lumps of ore that they brought back as proof that they had looted from the abandoned hovels. The more knowledged among the children would examine the "silversteel" and determine it's value.

Before they had returned, another scouting group had been sent toward the blastsite of the giant blue bolt of lightning. They had no idea what to find, but luckily they had some guidance.
Craftpriest Aleon came to them hurriedly right before they left. He instructed them to find the "crater" and fill a specific pouch with the "ash" he believed they would find there. Why he wanted them to do so, the scouts couldn't tell and didn't really ask, but they understood it was important. If the Craftpriest needed something of them, they would do what they could.

The day  before, Aleon had carved a wooden idol to Belia and prayed for guidance. While he had received no answer during his attempts, he did not lose faith. He went to bed that night, determined to try again in the morning.
That's when Belia visited him in a dream. At least, he assumed it was Belia. Nobody had spoken to him in the dream, but he had been in a place so real and livid, he could swear he had actually been transported there in the night. 
He had stood in a crater of blackened ground. Trees all around him were demolished and fallen away from the crater from the blast that had created it. He knew instantly, it was the blue lightningbolt. There, among the blackened ground he saw ash. Not volcanic ash, but ash much like it. Aleon got the feeling once he saw it, that it won't be the same as using volcanic ash in his ritual, but it will still have the desired effect.

Clan Oreborn

A goldenbeard explorer sat on a rock, resting after his recent voygages. He had been tasked, along with his group, of finding animals nearby that could perhaps be tamed or domesticated. It was a tale he'd be telling over a pint of ale for many years to come.

Hours earlier...
The beast whirled, almost knocking the dwarves over by the sheer gust of wind. It was bulky, giant and had huge tusks but its' legs were short and sprinty so it couldn't strike at all of them at once.
When it snapped back to fight off one of the dwarves, another stabbed at it with his spear. Eventually they managed to tire it enough that it collapsed on the ground. Everyone drew a sigh of relief. The beast was in fact a boar, but calling it a boar was a gross understatement from its' immense size. It was like a rhino, or a mammoth if there were any in this world. How they would tame or domesticate such a giant pig, they had no idea and so they left the beast to recover on the ground. Much to their shock and awe, and indeed horror, as soon as they turned around the beast lept up again and charged at them. In a strange turn of events, Gorgh the lead scout was flung up in the air, harmlessly landed on the beast's neck and gave it a good whack with his fist. The beast stopped dead in it's tracks, throwing Gorgh off to land in front of it, and when everone thought the beast would devour him whole or trample him to death, the darn thing licked him. It suddenly became like a lost puppy who found a new mother - so docile and gentle. The entire scouting group rode on the back of the giant boar back to the clan's lower settlement where they initially scared the living hell out of the villagers, but later managed to convince them the beast was harmless. Mostly.
Now, Gorgh and his dwarves had been tasked with finding more of the beasts to domesticate and bring back. Oh woe is me, Gorgh said and fell asleep on a rock.

Back home, the smithy and the few Ironbeards available had started working on crossbows for the military. The woodworkers were soon brought into the project and eventually, a steady workflow was created. They would continue their work until told to stop or until materials ran out.

Echadon and his companions of 8 were sent to the Ursar, who welcomed them warmly but would not let them pass into the settlement center just yet. It seems some sort of celebration or ritual was under way and while the dwarves were welcomed in, they were not allowed to participate.
After a moment of waiting in the large tent that has become the sort-of embassy for whenever the dwarves visit, an Ursar you have never met before enters the tent. He is old and venerable and speaks slow in a croaky voice. Barely did you even have to ask them about the strange storm, for they told of the omen their God had given them. They revere a God called Khoros who is their God of strength, blood and honor. The storm was to them Khoros leaving his mark upon the world. They said very soon, Warriors of Khoros shall come to call upon all true followers for the final war for the world itself.

The Lycan Covenant

And so the resistance finally takes shape. After the secret meeting of the tribe leaders, a storm rolls in over the lands. Rain washed down upon them for a few hours, and the Ogres and Lycan alike watched in awe as a giant bolt of lightning struck somewhere far into the south. After a few hours had passed however, the weather returned to normal. (See more in the world-event section at the top of this post.)

While the mystical phenomenon had dazed the fellowship momentarily, they soon got to work. Bloodfang sought out his warriors. Some had survived the battle but fled into the wilds to avoid capture by the ogres, and not all had returned to the settlement. It would take a while before Bloodfang could gather all his forces.

SIlentpaw and her stealthy lot had already been tracking the ogres for weeks, very discreetly. The ogres were vigilant and so gathering any information about them had been very hard. Recently though they had gotten bolder and with Vlath's instruction they began mapping and time-tabling the Ogres' movements. For now, all you know is that they patrol the village three times a day with a large band of soldiers - once at sunrise, once at mid-day and once at dusk. Once a week they also came into the settlement to take some lycans away for presumed slave-labor, but seeing as Silentpaw hasn't been able to stalk the Ogres back to their camp that often she has no idea where the captives are actually being taken. Time would tell.

Goldtooth had a hard task before him. He would aid the others in any way he could, but... It simply wasn't possible to learn how to forge armor and weapons the ogres had without gaining access to their camp or by having the ogres yield their secrets of own free will. The latter, Goldtooth remarked, wasn't likely.

[Goldtooth has no idea how to gain the ogres secrets. He has no objects to examine to attempt to replicate forging, or any recipe to go from.]

Vlath wasn't having much luck either. He knew the Gods had placed trust in him and that he was charged with a monumental task... But they were earily silent as of late. He had a feeling they were conserving their energies, biding their time. After all, eternal beings had all the time in the world and Vlath realized if he didn't finish his task, they would wait a millenia if they had to until a new chosen race would ascend to take the task upon them. This gave him new determination to see it through, but as of now he could only meditate and guide the others as best he can.

The Orc-Grave Swamp Enclave

Gredy proves to be resilient and headstrong. He does not sway or budge from the show of affection he gets from the other Goblins who seek his affection in return, but instead he keeps his mind focused on the task at hand.
One girl, Spunky, took it especially harshly and stormed off after Gredy had rejected her in the politest possible way. Hopefully, he thought, she wouldn't do something stupid. 

As for the boat idea in the swamps... It worked both well and less well. Having a floating house sure was convinient when you live in a swamp, and so the residents of the outpost soon took to the idea. This way, the outpost was even semi-mobile and could relocate (albeit slowly) if need be.
The travel-by-boat thing however, had varying results. It was hard navigating a boat through the narrow moats around the marshes, but through the larger waterways it worked fine. Depending on the size of the boat, of course. Meanwhile, the small path and walkway through the swamps that connected the Enclave and the Outpost would make do.

Clan Metalbeard

"Bloody 'ell mate, ye didn't win! A nosebleed don't count - I whacked ye good and ye kno' it!" roared Farlen Quickhands over the longtable. "Hah! First blood is first blood, ye twat! Tha' whack came afterwards, which means yer disqualified an' I win by default!" yelled Gorm Ragetoes from the other side. Their companions all laughed heartily as they all shared drinks.
The night prior, Quickhands and Ragetoes had dueled over some minor quarrel that they had now forgotten.
Blackhand sat over at the master's table, overhearing the bickering. "Well..." he thought to himself. "This 'ol dueling thing sure works wonders when settling disputes."

Indeed, the dueling had caught on fast. Dwarves were hearty folk who liked to be active, and now that the downpour had kept them in their holdfasts they had begun to feel quite restless. Through this new cultural phenomenon, the dwarves were able to not only strengthen their morale but also settle their disagreements rather bluntly. The dwarves respected the rules - the winner is deemed to be in the right. Some called it barbaric, as strength alone does not nullify a good argument, but everyone knew that. Might does not make right, not on the scale of a nation, but perhaps from one dwarf to another who fight under the same rules, a concord could be reached.

The Elven Enclave

With the elves' magic not working, manual foodproduction had to be expanded upon. However, rumours had spread fast and now everyone knew of the spear Saleian had brought back to the settlement. While not many knew of the whole undead deal, elves began noticing Saleian's worry after he ordered new warriors be trained and all expeditions be guarded at all times by no less than three elves-at-arms. Some had begun to think Saleian was just paranoid, seeing as they didn't know he suspected undead foes may lurk somewhere.

The pathfinders that were sent to find the source of the spear went to the place where the wilder drake had been found. It was no longer there, and where its' blood had been spilled was now a patch of verdant green grass with flowers of many colors. The beast's blood had fertilized the soil of the earth to an extraordinary level. They travelled further west, where the grass became less green. First it became yellow like fields of grass often do, but then it became gray and scarred. It seemed the further west they travelled, the less wildlife they encountered. They prepared for the worst, but nothing happened. Suddenly, an elf foot stepped on something. It cracked and broke, and when the elf looked on his foot he saw that he had stepped on a bone. The entire party stopped and looked around. They all spotted the dead in the grass. Skeletons of warriors long dead, barely even dust left. If these were undead, they would pose no threat, for they all missed important parts to be able to move. Their armor and weaponry however was strange and foreign to the elves. They had never seen it before. The bones were those of dead humans, but the elves had never met a culture like this. Strange.
