If they at least have the decency to say that they're leaving instead of simply ghosting the RP, that's good enough to me.

Novak

Novak awoke from what was fortunately an uneventful night, having slept fairly well considering how unfamiliar his surrounding were. On the other hand, it wasn't like he could remember what constituted "familiar" to him. He had ended up choosing to take up Enli's offer of lodging rather than join his companions with Lazirha's dwelling, which was already cramped enough. It wasn't just Lazihra and Novak's two companions either- it seemed that Nobunaga and Misaki had joined up with some more of the goddess' chosen, specifically a cat-girl and an albino woman. Just how many people did the goddess bring to this world, he wondered.

After dressing himself, Novak headed outside to see if his companions were up and about, and to look for the prospect of getting some breakfast. Because he had turned down Bolcha's offer of payment, he himself had no money and for now would probably have to rely on Lazirha's hospitality to stay fed. As he headed to Lazirha's home, however, he noticed the congregation that had formed at one end of the town. Novak's curiosity got the best of him and he decided to first check it out. It looked like a tent was set up, perhaps it was the trader that Lazirha mentioned. Admittedly, Novak wouldn't exactly be able to buy anything, but he at least wanted to see what was going on, and what sort of things were on display.

The skillseeker trotted up to the tent, where several guards clad in foreign-looking armor- probably the merchant's hired guards- stood distinct from the crowd around them. There were a few stalls, but Novak couldn't see what was being peddled. He weaved through the congregation to get a closer look, but when he drew near, he was greeted by a most surprising sight. The merchant peddling these goods appeared to be none other than the fox woman whom he had met yesterday, currently being addressed by the white-haired man from yesterday.

So that's what she meant by "I'm a bit ahead of schedule," he thought. At least, that's what it seemed like. She seemed...different than yesterday, no longer reeking of alcohol or fish, no longer inebriated-looking, and...well it seemed rather odd to envision the fluffy-tailed thief from yesterday as a well-off merchant. Perhaps he could ask Bolcha, he seemed to have been familiar with her. For now, however, he'd content himself with quietly browsing the wares, curious to see if the fox-girl would recognize or acknowledge him.

Did he ever see her yesterday, or did he leave before getting a peek into the shed?.

Fleuri Jodeau

It seemed that the masked necromancer was prepared for Fleuri, having summoned a magical barrier to block both his and Fanilly's attacks. Behind the conjured shields, their foe confidently announced that he'd kill everyone in the room, reaching for a vial. Fleuri had no idea what those vials did, but it was clear that they were very bad news.

Before the masked man had the chance to make good on his threat, however barrier was struck and shattered by a spell cast by his own ally, the female mage. Before Fleuri or Fanilly had the chance to strike the necromancer through the opening, a crossbow quarrel- specifically one of the bolts taken from Damon's corpse- struck their foe in the eye, killing him instantly. With the man's death, the slime-like creature dissipated into a puddle of disgusting but otherwise harmless sludge, and the female mage surrendered without any further resistance.

It seemed that the fight was over. The Nem's sister was rescued, the conspirators and their mercenaries were defeated, and the desecrated dead had been put to rest. From the look of it, none of the other knights appeared injured. It was another victory for the Iron Roses.

Fleuri had mixed feelings about the mage's abrupt surrender. On one hand, he had hoped that they'd be able to take at least one of the conspirators alive, and the woman's abrupt double-cross suggested she was amenable to cooperating if it meant avoiding execution. On the other hand, Fleuri was doubtful that the woman did this out of any moral compunction- she probably took exception to her companion's threat to kill everyone in the room and thus was simply seeking to save her own skin. Perhaps it would become clearer after they searched the place and questioned her.

"The conspirator and mercenaries on the upper level are all dead, Captain," Fleuri reported to Fanilly, opening the visor of his borrowed helmet. "What are your orders?"

Novak considered the fox girl's words. Perhaps she was right, this elder beast's thought processes could be fundamentally different from that of a human's. Such a possibility might be useful to remember if they were to attempt to reason with it. Her other suggestion, that someone else was riling up the animals and using the Kyrinth as an excuse, was also something to think about. It would be best to consult Misaki later and see if she had uncovered any information about the village's arrangement with the Kyrinth.

When he returned the bag to Bolcha and was offered a reward, Novak politely declined. "That isn't necessary, I was merely assisting with a mischievous animal." He was certainly tempted to take the reward, but it didn't feel right, not after everything Bolcha and the rest of the village had done for them. Novak had been given a second chance at life, and while he could not remember what he did right or wrong in the previous one, he wanted to do things right this time. This act might annoy the fox girl considering her implied materialism, but was his turn to have some amusement at her expense. If Bolcha insisted, however, Novak would take the reward, for he did not wish to insult his hosts.

After this was done with and he left the building, Novak turned back to the vulpine woman.

"Now that's over with, would you care to join us?" he proposed. "Myself and a few other outsiders intend to try and reverse the town's misfortune, and we could definitely use someone with your talents. I figure you might stand to gain from preserving the profitability of this village, and our accommodations will probably be more comfortable than that storage shed."

There was definitely some risk in attempting to recruit the aid of a stranger, especially an unscrupulous one, but it's not like Novak, Nobu, or Misaki had anything worth stealing. Additionally, someone with the skill set of a rogue or thief could be useful, especially if this person could shapeshift into an animal.

Whatever the fox girl's response, Novak would track down his companions and inquire if they had learned anything more about the Kyrinth, the village, and the deal between the two. Afterwards, he would ask Nobunaga if she would be willing to instruct him in swordsmanship in the near future. He needed to start acquiring useful skills if he wanted to make anything of himself in this world, and being able to fight would be a good start.

The fox-woman assured Novak that she was not a violent sort, and even gave him the stolen bag. Unlike her previous assurances, this one was more...convincing to Novak, and caused him to relax a bit. She even handed him the bag, after having posed a question to him.

"I haven't been here long, so far they seem like decent, hospitable folks suffering from misfortune," he replied to her query as she pulled on her boots. "You may have noticed the remains of the beast that attacked the town. From what I've heard, it sounds like their woes stem from a compact or covenant with an elder beast going sour."

Novak had made a few more observations about this woman. First, from the way she spoke, and from the way a stolen bag found its way into her possession, carried by a fox with the same features as her, she appeared to be a thief. Second, while she certainly stood out as much as Misaki or Nobunaga or the white-haired man, she seemed too...settled and familiar with the village to be one of the goddess' recent arrivals. Assuming she was a native of this world, she was clearly well-traveled, and Novak might learn something conversing with her.

"If it's possible to communicate with this elder beast, I'm sure it'll have its own side of the story, and its own grievances," he continued as the walked through the village "But whatever the case is I hope that reconciliation is possible, before the village is pushed to its breaking point."

Perhaps it was unwise to disclose this to a stranger, especially an unscrupulous one, but if she had been squatting here for any period of time, she probably already knew of what was going on. If she could shapeshift into a fox, perhaps she even may have even been able to "hear" the Kyrinth's anger and its inciting of beasts to attack.

"How about you?" he asked. "You seem to have some familiarity with this village. What do you think of them? And do you have any idea why this Kyrinth might have become angry with them?"

In any case, Novak would eventually arrive at the workshop and return the bag of tools to Bolcha.

"Here are those tools back," he stated, not remarking on the assuredly not-suspicious fox-woman accompanying him. "I'm afraid I lost track of that other fellow, however."

Novak

The fox girl continued to profess her innocence and dismiss the notion that a person could shapeshift into an animal. Her augments didn't come off as convincing in her arguments, and her mischievous tone only further undermined any chance of it alleviating Novak's suspicion. If anything, her nonchalant, playful denial suggested that she wasn't making any real effort to convince him of her innocence.

She's playing around, just like before. She's clearly not the least bit worried.

It was at this point that Novak noticed the items behind her as she moved. The leather bag was there, as he expected, but what really caught his notice were the fox mask and a pair of bladed weapons. Together with the woman, these items spelled out a concept that Novak could recognize.

This woman is dangerous, no wonder she's so calm, Novak concluded, alarmed. The blades were enough to worry about- people didn't usually carry weapons unless they knew how to use them (with obvious exceptions like himself), but together with the mask, it cast the impression that she was fighter or...what was the word...ninja? The point was that fox transformation or no, the woman had nothing to worry about. It was also only at this point that he realized that his white-haired companion had not followed him in at all, meaning he was alone with this potentially dangerous fox-girl.

"I'm not accusing you of anything," Novak responded, not quite able to mask his alarm, "But that bag there appears to be the one that the fo...err, the animal had run off with. If you would allow me, I would like to return the misplaced item to its owner." In truth he had already resolved to play along in this manner, to politely and non-confrontationally talk her into allowing him to return the bag, but it had suddenly seemed very unwise to deviate from this approach.

@Rune_Alchemist
Novak

The white haired fellow's attempt to get the fox to drop the bag was to command it to do so. Normally even Novak, someone who was making a fool out of himself to try to talk to a fox, would've found it silly and a bit odd, but there was something strange about his words, something oddly compelling about his command. Was this some form of magic? Was it the ability that the goddess had given him, just as she had given to Novak?

It didn't really matter, the fox was unaffected. It did, however, respond to Novak's offer, except it dropped the fish instead of the bag, then darted through a hole into the building. It was very clear at this point that this fox was far more intelligent than a regular animal, and its actions were definitely not those of a simple beast seeking sustenance. What Novak didn't understand was what a fox would want with a leather bag of tools. Fortunately, with the animal having retreated into the building, it'd be a simple matter to corner it and extract the stolen goods from its maw.

"When we get in there, we need to make sure it has way to escape until we get those tools back," Novak advised his companion as he walked up to the door. He picked up the fish on his way there, intent on giving it back to the villager, assuming they wanted it after being dragged around town in a fox's mouth.

Novak opened the door into the building and stepped inside, intent on getting those tools back. He was actually a little surprised that the fox didn't bolt out as soon as the door opened. Much more surprising, however, was the scene that awaited the two inside. At first glance, it appeared to be a storage shed for the fisherman, lined with nets and smelling strongly of fish. The fox was nowhere to be found, but residing within the shed was a very strange sight. A fox woman, similar to Misaki but with black hair was lazing atop some boxes. Judging by the smell of alcohol emanating from her, she was likely drinking.

For a moment Novak was unsure what was going on, until he noticed the color of her eyes and the white fur on the tip of her tail, same as the fox they were chasing. Was this fox-woman the fox, having changed form? He knew almost nothing of what sort of magic existed in this world, but after everything he had witnessed in his flight from the place of their rebirth, shapeshifting didn't seem so impossible. Or perhaps it was an ability tied to the woman's race. Either way, this would explain why the fox seemed so much smarter than a typical animal.

When the woman finally spoke, she didn't deny that she was a troublemaker, but insisted that she was not the least bit suspicious, which only made Novak think that she was in fact suspicious. Her insistence that they not tell anyone about her squatting in here, and her rather specific query as to whether or not they were looking for something, only made her look even more suspicious. Novak wasn't sure what sort of powers the fox woman possessed, but he was pretty sure that if they did go inform on her, she'd be gone without a trace as soon as anyone came looking.

"Yes, we are in fact looking for something," Novak replied, having opted to play along. "We're looking for a leather bag of tools that a black fox with a white-tipped tail and green eyes stole and ran in here with. I don't suppose you know where it might be?"

Novak

It was fortunate that the silver-haired fellow took off after the fox, because Novak would likely have lost track of it in his detour to find something to lure it out. Once he had a piece of beast gut, Novak dashed after his impromptu companion, reasoning that the fox would not be far ahead. With how much the unknown man stood out, it wasn't hard to track him down, and soon the two of them were in hot pusuit of the little furry thief.

The chase took them all over the town. The fox proved too elusive for them to catch, and even had the audacity to steal a fish mid-pursuit. At the same time, however, for all its clever moves, it did not succeed in shaking its pursuers. Eventually it took them to a house, where it once again evaded the other fellow's attempt's to catch it. It did not flee into the woods, however, but simply circled the house. It was at this point that Novak began to suspect that something was going on.

It's got a straight line into the woods were we'd never catch it, so why is it running around like this? As Novak looked at the animal, a thought dawned on him. It's toying with us. It didn't fail to shake us off, I'd bet it wanted us to chase it.

"Does this animal seem to be acting strangely to you?" he asked the white-haired man. "There were several piles of edible flesh lying nearby, and it chooses to steal a bag of tools instead. It could have bolted into the woods where it'd never be caught, but it instead leads on a chase all over town. I think this fox is playing with us."

Novak knelt down and held out the piece of animal intestine, offering it to the fox. "Perhaps this might be to your liking, but you can't hold it, the bag, and the fish in your mouth all at once," he spoke softly, feeling a bit silly about talking to an animal. If the fox were to approach, Novak would place the piece of viscera on the ground and take a few steps back, and gesture for his companion to do the same.

@Rune_Alchemist@Cu Chulainn
I never bought into CDPR's hype or that "CDPR are the good guys" stuff, but this is still too disheartening for me to get a laugh out of it.
Novak

The first thing that came to Novak's mind when he saw the animal was that it appeared to be a fox, the same type creature with whom his companion Misaki shared physical characteristics with. He didn't have time to think about it, however, because the fox bolted past them out the doorway, with a leather bag in its mouth, to Bolcha's alarm. Even with all the strange twists and turns that had taken place on this day, Novak could not have predicted that he'd be chasing a tool-pilfering animal.

Then again, I suppose I did spend most of today following a fox around, so perhaps this is simply the new routine for me.

As they pursued it outside, Novak looked around hoping to find something that could help them. There's no way I can catch that thing on foot, he thought to himself. On the other hand, they didn't need to catch it, they only needed to get the animal to let go of the sack it was carrying, whilst not losing it. Maybe if the fox saw something it wanted more than a leather bag, Novak wondered as he glanced at the butchery in progress.

"That thing eats meat, right?""Perhaps it might be willing to let go of the bag if it's offered something more edible," he suggested to Bolcha, glancing down at the pile of unpalatable-looking viscera that nonetheless may appear more appealing to a wild animal.

The pile of guts and organs looked like inedible waste to Novak, but he didn't dare take any without permission. Akando did say that they try to use every part, and the last thing the heroes needed was for one of them to squander the goodwill gained from killing the armored beast.

@Rune_Alchemist@Cu Chulainn
Novak

Akando left to take care of other business, leaving Novak with Bolcha and the new arrival. He appeared fully human, but the man's blue eyes and white hair made him stand out, and reminded Novak of Misaki. He certainly looks the part more than me, he thought. Novak was unsure how the goddess chose the forms of the people she summoned, but he was grateful that he himself had been blessed with an appearance that, judging from the reflection he had beheld on the blade of his sword, seemed to not stand out. Not that it stopped this stranger from correctly suspecting Novak of being another of the goddess' chosen.

It seems that even without white hair or animal ears, I stick out like a sore thumb to a perceptive soul. Between his attire, quite distinct from the locals' clothing, and Akando mentioning his role in slaying the beast, it was clear he wouldn't be blending in. Whatever the case may be, however, the white-haired man did not press Novak on the matter further, and did not seem to rouse the attention of the locals.

Bolcha spoke up, asking the two new arrivals for help with some work. The stranger replied first, offering his assistance without hesitation. Perhaps there was more to him than Novak thought. After all, the goddess wouldn't summon someone whom she didn't see potential in for fixing the world, right?

"Certainly, I'll help with whatever you need," Novak spoke. He hadn't been in the town for very long, but he had already become quite invested in the well-being of the locals. Perhaps it was simply his emptied mind latching on to the first friendly civilization he had come across, but he wanted to help put an end to the problems that afflicted them, and every little bit of aid would help. It certainly wouldn't be fitting for one of the goddess' chosen heroes to stand around when there was work to be done.
