Bio

British gal. Watches far too many films. Loves travelling.

Been into RPs for a while and I generally seem to stray towards more fantasy/supernatural based storylines. I also like detail and in-depth plots as much as possible! Always up for new ideas though.

CATMOSPHERE
HEBE & JULIE

Two days after the Acropolis party...

“Oh my gosh! He’s soooo cute!” Hebes voice squeaked in excitement as she knelt down in front of the object of her excitement. Wide eyes peered back up at her, a gentle vibration emitting from within his chest. He was beautiful. She wanted to pick him up and take him home right away. Of course, she knew she couldn’t, but it did make her wonder whether Coco would be agreeable to getting a pet...

Reaching a hand towards him, Hebe first allowed him to tentatively sniff her before moving to pet the soft fur atop his head. The ginger ball of fluff gave Hebe a rough lick with his sandpapery tongue. Her lips parted to let out a small laugh, head turning to look at the waiter who was standing patiently behind the pair. ‘Catmosphere’ was a small but cosy cafe nestled into a side street in the centre of downtown Seattle. It was one that you wouldn’t know about unless you heard about it by word of mouth or, like Hebe, had done some rather excitable googling. The goddess of youth, when given the option to choose an outing, would always prefer to pick somewhere different. Sure Starbucks was nice but getting to cuddle cats was so much better! Though she hoped Julie wasn’t allergic...in her eagerness she’d forgotten to ask.

“What’s his name?” Hebes eyes widened eagerly as her attention flitted between the server and the animal in question, scratching gently under the latters chin.

“Rupert. Y’know, you can take him to your table if you’d like...” The waiter looked like he had dealt with far too many teenagers squawking over adorable felines but Hebe seemed not to notice this. Instead she gently scooped the kitten into her arms before scrambling to her feet. “I can?!” She grinned happily. Excitement reeled off the goddess in waves as she clutched the creature to her chest. She’d had no idea that she’d actually be able to hold the cats. This was great!

“Yeah, sure. Whatever.” The ever disinterested waiter muttered, whose name Hebe ascertained was Trevor by his cat-shaped badge, before leading her to a table that was located next to a large set of bay windows. It only afforded a view of the street below, where she could see mortals busily going about their everyday business, but she was happy to watch them whilst she waited for her companion. Taking a seat, she gently placed the kitten into her lap. As Rupert curled up into a comfortable ball, she glanced at her phone, trying to ignore the slight nervousness she felt creeping into her stomach. Gods, she hoped they got along.

“No! No! No!” Julie kept saying as she was literally running past people. How could she be late now!? Every now and then she checked her watch. Angry with herself for every minute she was late. Eventually, after getting the wrong address two times she finally found the little hidden gem in Seattle. It was strange, she had lived here for over seven years now and not once had she heard about something as amazing as Catmosphere.

Bewildered and a little exhausted she pretty much stumbled into the cozy place. The cats, quite to her surprise, didn’t even mind her just barging in. If she had been early, as she had planned, she probably would’ve played with the cats a little bit. “I’m so sorry.” She whispered at the lounging cats as she past them. In truth she really shouldn’t have been here. Cats being one of her weaknesses, she probably would probably end up adopting one right now.

Still, first she wanted to meet the very first family member of Alex! Julie’s phone was in her hand with an Instagram picture of Hailey Cooper as her eyes darted from table to table. Hoping to find the brunette with such a wonderful, bright smile. Eventually she thought she had found her. Well, the girl was looking down at her phone and looking away. Quite sheepishly the blonde approached her. “Hi…I’m sorry but… are you Hailey?” She asked with a slightly worried but also hopeful smile.

Head shot up when Hebe heard her mortal name, face lighting up in excitement as her eyes landed on the woman standing cautiously in front of her. She’d had no idea what Julie looked like but as her eyes passed over her, she couldn’t help but admire how beautiful she was.

“Yep that’s me! Oh, are you Julie?!” She blurted out, enthusiasm quickly etching itself across her features. When Julie had contacted her she’d been more than excited to meet with her big brother's girlfriend…even if it was kind of disappointing that he hadn’t mentioned her before now. But she figured that Ares must’ve had a good reason to keep it secret. “I’m so glad you managed to find your way here! I was a bit worried because it’s kind of hidden…” She added as she took one last glance at her phone before placing it face down on the table.

Normally she would have shot up to give her a hug but with the kitten fast asleep in her lap, she simply stayed put, basking in the warmth that his small form radiated. “This is Rupert by the way!” Hebe smiled, nodding her head at the curled up kitten. Clearly used to the hustle and bustle of humans, he seemed completely unperturbed by her excited outburst, remaining fast asleep throughout.

“Yep!” The mortal said in response to Hailey’s blurted out question. Julie took the seat in front of Hailey but then looked over to see Rupert on her lap. “Awww!” She exclaimed, wanting to reach over to pet the kitty. But seeing it so fast asleep on the girl’s lap stopped her. She really didn’t want to annoy him with her own attention. Which was frankly limitless when it came to cats. “He looks really cute on your lap!” The mortal said as instead she outstretched her hand towards Hailey. “So yeah, it’s a real pleasure to meet you Hailey. I’m so sorry I couldn’t make it for breakfast yesterday. Work just suddenly bombarded me with a photoshoot but it’s really nice to finally meet someone from Alex’s family!” The pure, unbridled excitement was quite evident on the girl’s face.

Taking Julie's hand in-between hers, Hebe gently shook it before bringing her hands back to absentmindedly scratch at the nape of Rupert's neck. He began to emit a small purr, which she couldn’t help but smile at. “That’s alright! It’d been a while since I’d seen Alex so it was nice to catch up…” Despite the wholly unexpected news, which she was still desperately trying to push to the back of her mind, it had been fun to catch up with him. Ares was always so busy that she couldn’t help but worry about him a little, but it was nice to know he had someone to look after him.

“A photoshoot? Oh wow, are you a model?!” Briefly distracted by thoughts of her brother, Hebe's attention flitted back to Julie when she mentioned the shoot, eyes widening. Leaning forwards in her chair, her eyes flitted over the woman more carefully, trying to remember if she had seen her in any magazines or on any billboards. “What kind of work do you do? My best friend does some modelling too actually!”

“Oh yeah, I know how that feels.” Julie said in response to Hebe telling her how she hadn’t seen Alex for a while now. She hadn’t either. In the past it felt strange how he often just seemed to disappear. These days though, she got a little used to it. She still missed him every day when she wakes up alone. A small smile crept on her lips though when a thought slipped in her mind. She would see him again tonight. That was his promise. Hebe’s sudden questions about the photoshoot and modelling pulled Julie back into the present. “Oh no, no. I’m not – I mean I used to be a model.” Julie explained. “It was just some small scale stuff. You know some lingerie.” Her cheeks turned a bit flustered. “But these days I’m the photographer. I’ve been lucky enough to do some gigs for Aeon!” But then she heard that Hailey had a friend who modelled as well and instantly the blonde’s face lit up even more. “Really!? What’s her name?” She asked as excitedly as Hailey was.

“Aeon? Oh wow, I’ve seen some of their stuff! Their clothes are beautiful…though a bit too expensive for me unfortunately.” Pulling the menu towards herself, Hebe began to flick through it as she spoke, letting out a small laugh as she considered the dire state of her bank account. The goddess failed to omit that she did indeed know the owner of Aeon, feeling it would come across as strange for her to have any association with Venus. Or at least it would to a mortal. “I bet you were a great model! I could never be brave enough.” She continued with a smile, her expression filled with genuine curiosity. Hebe hadn’t met any of Ares’ previous girlfriends but she for sure was liking Julie already.

“Oh my friend? She’s called Coco. She’s so pretty! I’ve seen a bit of her work though I’d love to see her on a shoot!…Ooh, pancakes—” Hebe gushed, briefly getting distracted as she spotted one of her favourite breakfast foods on the menu. They were shaped like cats too! And came with strawberries!

“Yeah… they’re very expensive.” There was a slightly cheeky smile forming upon Julie’s lips which she quickly hid behind another menu cart. Those dresses were expensive, too expensive for Julie. Not for Alex, who had surprised her with one only a few months back. “Leona’s so talented. I really wish I could meet her someday.” So far the blonde had only seen the world famous artistic designer from a distance, surrounded by people there were always vastly more important than a simple photographer. Maybe someday she’d get her five seconds. For now though, she was putting down the menu again to look at Hailey right when she name-dropped Coco.

“Wait...Coley ‘Coco’?” She asked. “Coley ‘Coco’ Merkouri?”

“Yep that’s her!” Hebe nodded, the excitement that was splashed across her face now tinged with a hint of surprise. Forever struggling to remember their mortal names, it took her a moment to recall that Coco's chosen last name was indeed Merkouri. “Wait, do you know her too? Oh! Have you worked with her or something?” She briefly wondered if Ares knew about their common connection. It would seem strange if he did, especially because he had never even mentioned Julie to her before now. “That’s so funny! Isn’t she great though?!”

“She really is!” Julie exclaimed, almost jumping in her seat. “I’ve known her for five years already! She is one of my best friends!” What were the odds that they both were so close to the same person? Well, she certainly had to tell Coco about all of this, but only after Julie hit her friend on the arm for not telling her about Hailey.

Right then though, one of the waitresses came up to take their order. “Oh I’ll just take some pancakes with maple syrup.” The blonde said before she turned towards Hailey. “You can take whatever you want.” She assured the student before quickly flashing the black credit card she had in her palm and giving her a rather brazen face. Alex could afford some expensive milkshake and whatnot Hailey really wanted to eat. If he even noticed the charge.

Hebe listened happily as Julie spoke about Comus. She couldn’t wait to let her know about this and she found herself having to resist the temptation to pick up her phone and text her straight away.

“Aw thanks but you don’t have to! I can pay for myself. I’ve got enough…I think.” She trailed off awkwardly before turning to the waiter. Trevor still looked equally as disgruntled but amusingly had somehow now adopted a pair of adorable cat ears (work mandated she assumed). “Can I have the pancakes too but with the strawberries and whipped cream! And…um, I guess the rainbow smoothie as well please.” Hebe reeled off what she wanted before handing her menu to Trevor, who had scribbled down their orders with only the odd grunt of recognition. He must be a dog person or something.

Julie didn’t mind. And in a second the card vanished out of her hand again. “Sooo…” She said, verbally dragging her feet. In all honesty, she didn’t know how Alex would react if he knew she would be asking this question. He had always been so mysterious about his family. Julie didn’t even know the names of his parents! “What’s your family like? Like how are Alex’s parents? His aunts? Coco always tells me about her crazy family it… kind of makes me envious that Alex never talks about his.”

“Well…” Hebe paused, unsure how to answer. Julie was under the impression that they were simply cousins when in-fact they shared the same parents. “Our family is kinda complicated. It’s hard to explain…but he loves his mother.” She smiled gently, picking at the edge of a pink napkin stamped with cat paws. Although her own relationship with Hera hadn’t been great recently (which she knew was kind of her fault), Ares had always been extremely close with their mother. It made her happy to know that at least one of them still had a good bond with her, especially now that Hephaestus was gone.

“And his father is—” The colour suddenly drained from Hebes face as she stopped mid-sentence, words disappearing in a strangled choke. A hand closed to clutch tightly around the napkin as her gaze strayed past Julie to the entrance of the cafe. No. Please no... At first all she’d noticed was a shock of blonde hair but this had been enough to send a heavy weight into her stomach, heart beating so hard that waves of panic began to rush throughout her body, skin crawling in protest. He was turned away, looking at the several felines that were perched on a rather tall cat tree, but she didn’t need to see his face to be able to tell who it was. Hebe knew that figure well enough to recognise it in an instant. It-it couldn’t be…

The once soothing noises of the cafe — the gentle meows of cats & kittens, and the quiet chatter of mortals — faded into the background as Hebe suddenly shot up from her seat. Rupert let out a mewl of surprise as he jumped off her lap, scattering away to some other patrons. “I-Can we, I-…” Hebe began to stutter, her eyes flitting anxiously between Julie and the cruelly recognisable form. Every breath, every moment here was one too long and she once more had an intense desire to run away. “P-please can we go?” She whispered quietly, a well of fear rising up at the chance that he might recognise her voice. Without waiting for a reply, Hebe's shaking hand had tightly grabbed Julies, the goddess pulling the mortal up from her seat.

Seeing the colour drain from Hailey when she mentioned Alex’ father made her anticipate the worst at first. Maybe he and Alex’ mother were divorced and it was a sore subject in the family? But only a moment later Julie realized that the girl wasn’t reacting to the family exposition. Her eyes trailed past the blonde at first. When she shot up from her seat, almost launching poor Rupert, Julie tried to as subtly as she could turn around to see who she was looking at. It took a moment, but then she noticed the figure standing by the cat tree. The way Hailey was reacting, especially now that she grabbed Jules’ hand to get her up made the mortal assume the worst. She shot up as well.

Julie’s own heart began to beat faster as she stood in between Hailey and the figure, almost hiding her. The man was much too close to the exit. “The back.” She immediately said as she nodded towards the kitchen doors that just opened with the waitress bringing two plates of pancakes, one with strawberries and whip cream and the other with just maple syrup. Julie hadn’t made a suggestion though. She was actively pushing the girl towards the door, keeping herself between the guy at the door who seemed to have triggered Hailey. As she passed the waitress she quickly whispered: “I’m sorry I’ll be back to pay.” Before ushering Hailey on through the door.

Her fingers had clutched tightly, perhaps too much so, around Julie's arm and she daren’t let go even as the woman led her into the kitchen. It was this minimal of contact that kept Hebe from breaking down right there, although she could feel the panic pushing at her already fragile limits. Through the heavy veil of fear she couldn’t help but feel a warm bloom of gratitude towards this woman who was barely more than a stranger, but who had not needed to ask one question before rushing to help her. “I-I’m so sorry…” Hebes voice was a mere hush, barely perceptible above the whir of chaos that was the kitchen. She moved her body to slide past cooks and waiters alike, cringing back at the contact when she accidentally brushed against their shoulders or arms. They looked at her with confusion or pity, some opening their mouths to question the pair, but she noticed none of it, only craving escape and distance.

The quick head shake of Julie was often enough to shut anyone up who would’ve piped up. She could see the cringe reaction from just touching someone. What had this guy done to her!? The anger towards that stranger quickly faded again as Julie got her to the other end of the kitchen and the both of them went through the back door. Ending up in a rather deserted alleyway, though the both of them could still hear the bustle of cars and foot traffic not too far away. At least Julie hoped Hailey would feel safe here. Luckily the cooks of the café were exactly like the cooks anywhere else. Which meant there were about three chairs in the back and a small table, upon which there was an ashtray with a literal mount of ash in it. “We can sit here, if you want. I doubt that guy saw us and even if he did, that kitchen won’t let him through.” Especially as she threw one of the cooks with a ‘Semper Fi’ tattoo a look her brother had taught her.

As Hebe did as she was advised and sat on one of the chairs - the cheap plastic of which was still wet from the eternal Seattle drizzle - the tears that had welled in her eyes began to spill over. Palms came up to brush them away but despite her best efforts, they kept on coming. “Y-you definitely think he didn’t see us?” She mumbled, her voice weary as she gave up on trying to stop her silent tears, head coming to rest between her hands. Hebe gripped at the roots of her long brunette hair, trying to will her shaking hands to stop. She opened her mouth to say something more but her mind was blank, hazy fear and panic lingering behind her line of vision, the sight of him still imprinted even now upon her gaze. He had been mere feet away from her, in a place he never would have gone to, and the goddess felt a deep pit of concern for why he had even been there in the first place.

“He definitely didn’t see us.” Julie said slowly but firmly. Yet it was a lie. She couldn’t really know if he had seen them or not, she had her back to him. But she wasn’t about to tell the panicking girl that. So Julie just feigned certainty, though she hated having to lie. Still, the promise didn’t seem to calm the girl down. In fact it looked like she was crumbling where she sat. Slowly Julie put a hand on her shoulder first, to see if she would flinch from the touch.

“Okay...” Hebe let out a deep sigh, one that would’ve threatened to turn into a sob if she hadn’t swallowed it down. At the feeling of a gentle touch on her shoulder, she looked up, before suddenly wrapping her arms around the woman. “Thank you.” She mumbled, still clinging onto Julie tightly, their close proximity causing her tears to wet the mortals dress. “Y-you must think I’m really weird...” The goddess let out a forced laugh, shaking her head at herself. Once her episodes of panic had been often and overwhelming but time had soothed her, terror mainly striking her at night and in her dreams, pulling her to a waking state. But now they had become frequent again and she felt a deep tinge of embarrassment for how weak she was being.

“I don’t think you’re weird.” Julie said as she firmly embraced the girl. Holding one arm on her back while with the other hand she gently brushed Hailey’s hair. She did think something terrible had happened. Few things could set a person off like that and none of them could be rationalized in Julie’s mind. “I just think you’re afraid of someone. It’s okay. It’s all okay.” She kept quiet as she held Hailey, letting the hug comfort her for just as long as she wanted. For a second she opened her mouth to say something, but still decided against it. Alex never told her about Hailey’s panic attacks but he would’ve if he knew. If she were being honest, she didn’t want to keep that secret. She wanted to get on the phone to Alex right now and explain everything. He often looked like a softy, but he could get things done. He could help. Still, as Julie held Hailey she knew she couldn’t breach the girl’s trust and she didn’t want to pressure the girl right now.

Even Hebe, who loved the familiar embrace of others, knew it was strange that she was clinging to this woman so fiercely. But having someone…anyone around was more than she’d had in the last five years. Not that her friends wouldn’t want to offer her comfort but she daren’t let her emotions spill out in front of them, for fear that they would ask one too many questions. The goddess had always figured it was better to try ignore it. She was immortal after all...the pain had to go away eventually. Right?

Eyes, through the hazy screen of tears glanced back towards the kitchen, heart lurching into her throat as the door suddenly swung open, banging loudly against the dirty brick wall. The smell of baked goods wafted through the air, only adding to the lingering nausea that she felt in her stomach, and she fought back the urge to throw up when a figure stepped into the narrow alleyway. Trying, and failing somewhat to hide behind Julie, Hebes pounding heart only ceased a little when she saw that it was just a kitchen porter lugging a bag of garbage next to the already overflowing cans. Staring at him warily, tears still flowing down her cheeks, her grip tightened around Julie's jacket. He barely seemed to notice them, grumbling something about not getting paid enough before storming back into the cafe.

After several moments, she looked up at the woman. “Could- could we walk somewhere else?” She breathed quietly, looking around the alleyway as if he would just pop up behind them at any moment. “If you have to go though that’s fine. I-I can get a taxi home…” Hebe desperately hoped she didn’t have to, or want to leave, the contact of another being the only thing that was stopping her from crumbling completely, but she also didn’t want to make her feel like she had to stay.

When the door flung open Julie cursed internally. Did the cook fail her? Her hand instinctively went into her handbag as she looked back. Only to see someone throw a bag of garbage in the bin. Muttering something Julie couldn’t care for. But it had a clear effect on Hailey. She wasn’t improving. “Yes, yes we can go anywhere you want.” Julie said as she wrapped her arm back around the girl, walking away from the backdoor and keeping an eye out along the street as they walked. Making sure that guy, whoever he was, wasn’t around. At first Julie just walked a few blocks with Hailey, hoping it would calm her down. Her phone was exploding in her pocket though. Probably irate calls of her manager demanding why she cancelled a photoshoot meeting on such short notice. That didn’t matter right now. “And just so you know.” Julie suddenly said. “I’m not going to tell Alex.” Not unless Hailey wanted her to.

He raised a visible eyebrow at Comus. Heracles tried to figure out what her plan was and more specifically, how she thought he was going to believe that she didn’t mean to tip over the table. Whether or not this was a play to prevent from losing and, in the process, sabotaging the deal they made, mattered the least to Heracles right now. Even he, someone so dense like him, could pick up on the not-so-subtle changes Hebe was showing. Granted, it did take a bit longer for him to notice, but once he did, he walked with her to a slightly less noisy part of the loft, which took the form by the sink in the second kitchen out of the main party stage.

As he ran a kitchen towel under some water, he handed it to Hebe, offering her a smile in hopes she would be more receptive to it than how she was to how out of control he became. “Here, this should help.”

“Thanks.” Smiling back, Hebe took the towel, beginning to dab at the spots of beer that had splashed spectacularly across her outfit. “And I thought I was the clumsy one…” Shaking her head, a small laugh escaped her lips, the gentle sound tinkling across the space between them. Being alone with him brought the nerves rushing back and Hebe found herself gripping onto the towel, eyes focusing anywhere but directly on his face. Inwardly she cursed herself, wishing she were more like...well more like Coco. For gods sake Hebe. It’s not like he’s a stranger…

It seemed obvious to her that Heracles would prefer to be in the throng of the party, rather than stand idle in the kitchen with her. The buzz of drunken excitement though quieter, was still audible from over here, music and raucous laughter echoing throughout the large loft. “You should go back to the party! You are the host after all.” She blurted out after a moment's silence, gaze moving over to where she could see a mortal drunkenly trying to do a handstand…or maybe it was a cartwheel. It really was difficult to tell amidst the inebriated tangle of limbs. “I’m okay. I’ll just wait for this to dry…” Hebe pulled a face as she looked down at the oversized t-shirt. She was going to stink of beer for the rest of the night. Maybe Hel would have some perfume in her bag or something…she seemed like she would be organised like that.

He brushed off her suggestion for him to go back to the party. “I’m sure they’ll survive without me.”

Truth be told, Heracles didn’t want to go anywhere. Maybe it was the guilt he suddenly felt for possibly triggering something for her, which he still didn’t understand but Heracles had enough awareness to know that much. Besides, if he was earnest with himself, having some time with her away from the chaos of the party was a reward in its own right.

Looking down at her shirt, he tried not to stare but Heracles had wandering eyes and the silhouette the beer made on her chest was a point of interest for those eyes of his; though he quickly brought them up to hers, finding the selectively absent control he rarely had. “I’m sorry, your shirt is ruined.” He frowned for a moment until a lightbulb of an idea went off and he began undoing the buttons of his shirt, unpromptedly taking it off and handing it to her. “Here, you can wear this until your shirt dries. I mean, obviously not here, but you can use the bathroom down the hall if you want.” He offered her a comforting smile, hoping the gesture meant something.

Chestnut eyes widened as Herc suddenly pulled off his shirt, heart racing at the sight before her. She had not expected him to do that. “What-Herc you don’t have to-I’ll be, I-…okay.” Hebe stammered, a blush flaring uninvited upon her cheeks. Despite herself, she was unable to stop her gaze from roving over his bare chest, eyes lingering for a moment too long on those well-earned muscles. Somehow she’d forgotten just how well..hot, he was. “I-I’ll just be a minute.” Not wanting him to see how easily embarrassed she had become, Hebe quickly grabbed the shirt from his hands before rushing off to the bathroom.

They had been gone for quite some time and Coco was getting restless catering to the whims of the mortals that surrounded her. It was intoxicating for a time, being the centre of attention, but it was only because of her 'drunken performance' and she was done playing actress. Pushing herself up from her seated position, one that was forced upon her by someone or another, she went off in search of her cousin and party brethren. Coming around the corner to the kitchen she could hear the two of them conversing lowly with each other. A warm smile spread across her face as their conversation ebbed and flowed as easily as drink from the very cups she poured for her father.

’Where is the old man… haven’t seen him since the meeting… the imprint on her shoulder from the grip of Hades was still throbbing if she dwelled on it for too long, luckily the bruise was covered by her shirt dress. With her father on her mind, as well as the previous knowledge of the conclave coming back to bring down her spirits, Coco took off in search of Dionysus in hopes of preoccupying her demons; just for the night.

A couple of minutes later the goddess of youth returned, looking utterly out of her comfort zone. As she wandered into the kitchen, she placed her own crumpled up t-shirt on the side before leaning awkwardly against the counter. It felt strange to be wearing a piece of his clothing, although she couldn’t help but enjoy the woody scent of cologne and pine that drifted up from it. “So er...how does it look? Totally instagram worthy right?” Hebe nervously joked as she pulled at the bottom of the shirt. It was a little bit shorter than she’d like, only just stopping her from completely exposing herself, but it was at least still better than smelling like an alcoholic.

“Damn!” His voice trailed into an extended, low whistle. “You wear that better than I could ever.” And that was the honest truth of the matter. Hebe had always been a cutie. Dating all the way back to their Mount Olympus days, she was quite literally the shining gem of the Gods. Nobody held a candle to her unrivaled beauty, not Aphrodite nor any other love god. Fast forward several centuries later and all of those feelings he could have sworn were lost found themselves at the forefront of his mind once again. “Well, since you mentioned it, we should totally take a selfie!” He pulled his phone out of his back pants pocket and placed his left arm around her neck, holding the camera up. “Smileeeee!”

Hebes cheeks had once again become tinged with pink at his sweet compliment; though she didn’t have time to dwell on this for long as she found herself suddenly drawn close to him. Her body involuntarily flinched at the sudden contact, instinct willing her to pull away. And she nearly did but for the infectious energy that always surrounded the god of heroes. It instantly put her at ease and she reminded herself that it was fine. It was just Herc…no-one else. Pushing back any undesirable thoughts, a genuine smile lit up her features as he took the picture.

“Oh no, I look like such a dork there!” She found herself laughing as the photo popped up, pulling a face at the result. Without thinking her fingers came up to tap on the screen, swiping through a couple of options until a filter came up which gave them both adorable pink bunny ears. “Everything’s better with bunny ears…” She added happily, before suddenly realising that Herc probably wouldn’t enjoy such a thing. Or at least that’s what she’d been told many years ago. “Sorry…that’s stupid.”

Normally, he wouldn’t but seeing how her pure, innocent, absolutely intoxicating smile flashed as soon as the bunny ear filter came on the screen, Heracles went along with it. He couldn’t remember the last time he felt so free. Parties were one thing. They allowed him to let loose when he needed to, but whenever he was with Hebe, her mother and everyone else be damned, he was able to let go of preconceptions about himself. And, honestly, seeing her so happy and giddy and embrace that adorkable nature she’s always emoted had never made him happier.

“No, no it’s not stupid. I think it’s cute,” he said, offering her an assuring smile. You’re cute.” He snuck a quick peck on the cheek while he was at it, not even realizing what he had done until he felt a warm, goosebump-like sensation crawl up his arms.

Her heart fluttered madly, unstoppably at his words, and it took her a moment to acknowledge the kiss. A hand reached up to her face, fingertips running softly over where his lips had been only moments ago. She knew the mere thought of such a thing would’ve once pushed her into a downwards spiral but now the action itself only sent butterflies into her stomach. It felt like a wave of fresh air, one that she hadn’t known she needed but one that enveloped her whole body. Part of her still wanted to sink into herself as she had been so prone to do recently, but another stronger part lit up at Hercs enthusiasm, happily following along.

“Mm, well you look pretty adorable yourself Heracles…” She teased, placing an emphasis on her use of his full name as she pointed to the selfie. “I wonder what your followers would make of this?” Slipping the phone from his hands, Hebe pretended to swipe onto his social media so she could upload the precious cargo.

“Yeah, same here,” he commented absentmindedly. It was only a few seconds later did he register what she meant. “Oh..oh.” Insert overused joke about Heracles being an idiot here. “I mean, I doubt they’ll be looking at me when you’re the real eye candy of this selfie.” He would note, bumping into her shoulder as gently as he could. Given her smaller frame, he didn’t want to hurt Hebe.

A giggle escaped her lips at his slip up, head tilting as she looked up at him. “You’re just being nice.” She said with a shake of her head. Hebe hadn’t been planning to actually upload it but seeing that he didn’t seem too concerned by the idea, she found herself shrugging her shoulders. A playful smile lit up her face when she had added the photo to his stories, shifting her body to lightly nudge him back. “There.” She said with an air of finality before passing the phone back to him.

After a brief series of moments spent looking at Hebe and how incredibly beautiful she was -- a thought Heracles entertained longer than originally intended -- he then thought about that text message just about everyone in the Pantheon he talked to on a regular basis received and how he was certain she did as well. And some ten seconds later, his thoughts focused on them and immediately blurted out, “so this might be out of the blue, but you know that ball that’s happening a couple of weeks? The ones the Romans are hosting?” The transition wasn’t something anyone would call subtle, but he ran with it. “Anyway, I usually avoid their events because they aren’t my cup of tea and I’d rather host another epic party like this one than get all dressed up.” Get to the point, Herc. “Anyway, would you wanna be my date?”

Hebe, who had been distracted by the body heat radiating off the god — which was both intoxicating and comforting at once — found herself staring at Herc blankly when the question finally slipped from his lips. She'd been leaning into the warmth but as confusion spread over her, she took a step back. Maybe she'd just misheard him or something. Surely he didn't want to go with her?

“Me? Are…are you sure?” She stammered nervously. The dizzying sensation of butterflies had crept back into her stomach once more and the goddess busied herself with looking at the pastel pink colour she’d painted onto her nails, not daring to look up at his face. “I mean- I, well there must be loads of influencers and stuff who’d love to go with you…” Her voice trailed off, disappearing into nothing. What she really wanted to do was just say yes but somehow she found the word getting stuck in her throat. Dammit Hebe.

She’s not making this easy for me. Damn it. The thought came to him as he took her hands into his, partially so that she would know he was sure and so she could have a chance to take a breather. He maintained a fixated gaze on her, smiling to ease the worry that was clearly present on her face. “Yes I am absolutely sure. Listen,” he paused, taking a moment to find the words he needed. When he did, he continued, “spending the short time with you--” even if Comus was there, too “--has made some stuff in the past come back up and I just wanna re-get to know you, Hebe.” He admitted with a delayed laugh. “And maybe I just want an excuse to see you again.” He shot her a wink.

Looking down at his hands, Hebe found herself focusing on them as he spoke, carefully taking in his words. After a few moments she willed herself to look back up at him, eyes moving over his face before returning his gaze. She could see the authenticity etched across his features. It was something she’d always admired about Herc. So many of the other gods would lie and trick but he had always been honest with her…at least as far as she knew.

“That’d be nice…” She eventually replied, head nodding gently. The idea that he wanted to get to know her again sent a burst of giddy excitement blooming in her chest, causing a smile to pull at the edges of her lips. “I’d love to go with you.” Without really thinking about it, her hands squeezed his gently, having no desire to let go. “I don’t usually go to balls either. But I guess it wouldn’t be too bad if you were there…” For what felt like the umpteenth time that evening, Hebe felt her face heating up again at her own words. It was amazing how easily he could both put her at ease and make her feel impossibly nervous.

“Though you do know you’re meant to dance at balls right?” She added quickly, a light laugh escaping her lips as she tried to ignore her reddening cheeks.

“Oh yeah, of course!” Great! Dancing, my single greatest foe behind fried stuff with cheese. He gave her a light shrug and a smile. On the outside, he put on a brave front. On the outside, Heracles made it seem as though he knew how to dance. He had the confident smile of someone who knew what to expect, but none of that was the truth. Heracles could do a lot of things: pose for an infinite amount of selfies, shoot a table tennis ball into a solo cup while his back was turned. He could fight an army of Hades’ undead army, but what has avoided him like the plagues and flus has always been a simple one-two step art known as dance. He didn’t know why he couldn’t dance because fighting was just a harsher version of dancing, yet the only times he ever found himself doing it was when he was forced to. “But, it’s not like required, is it?” He asked, trying to casually weave in his inquiry while hoping his worst fear wouldn’t be forced upon him.

“You don’t know?” Unable to resist teasing him just a little, Hebe tried to contain the laugh that threatened to spill from her lips. Apart from the few bits and pieces she’d picked up from the sororities, Hebe barely knew how to dance herself, so she didn’t really expect anyone else to know how either. Though she couldn’t deny that it would be fun to see Herc try. The idea of having an excuse to be closer to him also made her want to give it a go, even if she knew that she’d be far from perfect at it. “Yeah it’s totally compulsory.” A grin spread across her face as she looked up. “The romans are really big on the whole dancing thing apparently…” Unable to go any further, a giggle finally slipped out, nose crinkling playfully at him.

“I’m sure it’ll be fine!” He wasn’t sure if that was the truth or not but some part of him needed it to be so. Dancing was a foe he didn’t want to tame unless he had a good reason. Maybe Hebe would be that reason.

Looking up from her seat on the rock as Charlie approached, Summer tried to feign disinterest, lifting up her nails to admire them before realising that she could barely see them in the darkness. She could hardly see the outline of her own hand, let alone the pastel coloured pink she had carefully applied to her nails only the night before. So sadly she was forced to focus her attention of him instead, eyebrows narrowing a little at his words. “I’m not sulking. I’m just choosing to distance myself from annoying little witches.” She offered him a sarcastic smile, eyes rolling at the thought.

“Why do you even care anyway? It’s not like we’re friends.” Summers words were blunt as her gaze lifted up to stare at him, eyes unflinchingly looking into his. Her look might be construed as predatory by some, her brash nature radiating off her in waves. “Like I said before, I don’t need anyone’s pity...” Letting out a small sigh, she looked at the bracelet which she still had clutched in her hands. Despite its unclean state she decided to slip it onto her wrist, a small pulse of magic washing over her body like a gentle breeze. Whether it was because of the familial bond or just because she was used to its presence, the bracelet always put her at ease.

Lips pursed at his question, instinct telling her that he was asking it for vindictive reasons. Maybe so he could make fun of her later or something. Eyes narrowed as she looked at him, trying to figure out what his motivation was. The guy had always been surprisingly nice to her. Maybe it was a British thing...she had heard that they were known for being polite. It seemed kind of stupid to her but the thought that he might actually be genuine, drew an answer from her lips.

“My father gave it to me. That’s all.” She said as she stood up, brushing down her bare legs where a few bits of dirt and foliage had clung to the freezing cold skin. Summer wasn’t sure whether Charlie knew about her father, he was relatively new to the coven after all, nor did she feel like going into the details. Not that she’d be able to. All she knew was that one day he had been there...and then the next he had been gone. Telling other people seemed a pointless exercise in self-pity.

“We should head back.” Summer finally admitted after a moment's silence, although her tone made it sound like it had been her idea all along. “I don’t really feel like getting killed by some stupid animal. I’ve heard there’s wolves hanging around here...” She added, walking into the darkness before Charlie could respond.

“Are you coming?” Her voice called out as she strolled into the dense gathering of trees, body soon disappearing amidst the foliage.

Summer, oblivious to the darkness that weighed heavy about her, charged into the forest, hands angrily brushing at branches that blocked her path. She ignored the feeling of the foliage as it swiped against her legs, leaving small scratches dotted about the skin of her calves. Nothing mattered apart from putting as much distance as possible between herself and the camp. If she saw Dakotas stupid little face again...well, she didn't know what she'd do.

Eventually though, the cold, that was creeping in to rest uncomfortably against her exposed skin, caused her to stop in her tracks, arms coming up to wrap around her chest as she realised how inappropriately she was dressed for her current predicament. Her summer dress had been a pretty choice for the garden party but for a traipse in a forest containing who knows what, it was possibly the worst thing she could be wearing.

“Shit...fuck...I hate this bullshit!” Summer raged as she kicked at a tree trunk in frustration, biting her lip at the pain that shot through her foot. As agitation ran through her body like wildfire, she brushed icy-cold fingers through her hair, trying to release a few of the knots that had tangled there. If her mother could see her in this state...well, she’d probably disown her. If her father could see her like this...well, he’d probably just laugh and tell her to stop being a dumbass. Just the mere thought of her father was enough to improve her mood, or at least to calm her enough that she could think sort of rationally. Smiling lightly at the memory of him, her attention was suddenly brought back to the present by the voice of another shouting out from amidst the darkness.

"I have a bracelet...I have your bracelet.”

Summer paused, her whole body still as she listened to his words. It took her a few moments but eventually she was able to recognise the voice as Jean-Lucs. A small bloom of gratefulness began to gather in her chest. Was he actually being kind to her? It was more than anyone else had done. Or it had been...until he mentioned pity. Who did he think he was? The last thing she wanted was anyone feeling sorry for her. To be hated, despised, envied. All of that would be preferable to pity. “You can take your pity and shove it up your ass!” The teen yelled back as a new wave of frustration overcame her, voice penetrating like a knife through the heavy silence.

After a moment of standing there, Summer, despite her words, began to look for her bracelet. She expected it to be on the ground and had been wholly unprepared for it to suddenly land in front of her, as if god himself had tossed it from the heavens. Crouching down to retrieve it, she looked up just in time to see an owl flying past, wings gliding silently through the cool air. “Weird...” She commented as she squinted her eyes to look at the delicate piece of jewellery. She couldn’t see very well in the near pitch-black but it didn’t look too damaged...or at least not so bad that she wouldn’t be able to fix. Clutching it to her chest, Summer released a breath she hadn’t realised she’d been holding. She had it back and she was never letting go of it again.

Still standing there clutching the bracelet, Summer had to bite back a scream as three figures suddenly appeared from amidst the trees, at first being unable to recognise their dimly lit forms. She’d been so caught up in her own thoughts that she hadn’t taken notice of their approaching footsteps. Her eyes glanced over them impassively as they spoke, offering what anyone else would take as words of comfort. Charlie she could understand being there, maybe. But Jeremy she’d only just met and Kate...well, they’d never exactly seen eye-to-eye. It seemed strange to her that they would seek her out, just so they could make sure she was okay. Afterall, that’s not something she would’ve done.

“Fuck off...” Summer muttered halfheartedly, arms moving to fold against her chest. “I don’t need your help, or your pity.” Deep brown eyes rolled at the last word, a small bitter laugh escaping from her throat. “I’m perfectly fine on my own, thank you very much. Now if you don't mind...I’m off to find a tree to sleep in.”

Internally Summer cringed at the idea of having to sleep in a tree. Not only would it be incredibly uncomfortable but it was also likely to ruin her clothes even further. It was still better than returning to the camp though, so she promptly turned on her heel, striding off in the opposite direction to the trio. She didn’t get far though, before she had walked into a very large and very annoying rock. Letting out a yelp of pain, she crouched down to clutch her foot, which was now aching for the second time that night. “Damn it...” Summer muttered as she moved to sit herself down on the offending rock, no longer caring that she was getting both herself and her clothes extremely dirty. "Stupid wilderness..."

HEBE
SOMEWHERE IN SEATTLE
MOOD: NOT AGAIN

☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚:⠀ *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: .⋆
A twilight breeze. The smell of summer
Familiar ageless lands
Tall grasses keep her safe; if only for a moment
But hiding is not easy
And shadows reach where light cannot
Hands rise up to clasp
to claw
to…

Hebes eyes suddenly blinked open, the cold metal of the elevator reminding her of where she was. She thought she'd only shut them for a second, enough time to try and slow her racing thoughts. Yet an unimpressed figure now stood in front of her, arms crossed rigidly across his chest. It wasn’t clear how long he'd been there but she could tell that he was mere moments away from tossing her to the curb. Opening his mouth as if to chastise her, before he could utter a breath, she had cut him short. "I'm so sorry!" The words escaped her lips in a strangled sob as she lurched to her feet, small frame brushing past the stiff board of a man that was the Maître d’Hôtel of L’Atelier Du Rhöne.

Swerving past a couple of finely dressed diners, who had equal looks of perplexion etched across their faces, she darted out of the building. Ares’ words ran through her mind like bullets, one barely having passed through before the next took its place. Why was he here? Why now? What could he possibly want? He had turned her dreams to nightmares, and now her nightmares to life once more. Life was short for mortals and she had expected that the inevitable passing of years would be enough time to remove her from his mind. All she wanted to do was forget but apparently even that was impossible.

The weary goddess began to walk, mind so clouded with fear and worry that she barely took note of where she was headed. There was no way she could go back to her dorm, so instead she focused on putting one foot in front of the other, each step feeling like a heavy weight. She could only tell she was crying, once more, by the looks of concern that strangers by sent in her direction, unwittingly ignoring the few who reached out to ask if she was okay. How many times had she done so this week? For her brother, for herself, for something else which she wasn't quite certain of. It made her want to shed tears again when she realised how weak, how fragile she must look. It wasn't as if the other gods didn't have their struggles too but only she seemed to be unable to bear her burden. Even mortals could cope in times where she was just apt to drown in her own tears.

Eventually, and without knowing how much time had passed, she reached a secluded park...one that looked like it had seen better days. The grasses grew tall, weeds sprouting up amongst the few isolated flowers, and a children's playground was filled with rusting, half-broken equipment. Ignorant to her grungy surroundings, Hebe took a seat on one of the swings, legs mindlessly swaying beneath her.

"Oh Virtus, I'm so sorry about all of this." Reaching towards her companion, she ran her fingers gently through the fur at the nape of her neck. Hebe couldn't help but feel a bloom of gratitude towards Mars, for asking her to take care of his beloved pet on this day. Of course he could have no idea how much she would need the canines presence, but she was thankful nonetheless. "This is just between you and me okay? It's our little secret." She managed a weary smile, one which only reminded her of her aching head, as she raised a finger to press gently atop Vivis nose. "Boop. Gotcha nose!" Laughing softly at the stupidity of her action, her own nose crinkled in a brief moment of delight as Virtus' tongue reached up to lap at her finger. Animals were so pure and unconditional. It was soothing to be around them and she couldn’t help but be reminded of all the hours she had spent playing with her father's eagles atop the summit of Mount Olympus.

Looking fondly down at Vivi, Hebe moved to pull her phone from her pocket — mind searching for something, anything to distract her as she slowly began to scroll through the wall of notifications. Shaky fingers passed over an image from the Snapchat group she’d been added to, a light giggle escaping her lips at the picture of Hermes' face, which was barely visible behind the two floof balls that were currently sat atop it. Always so silly Hermy. Brushing a stray tear away from her cheek, she swiped until she landed on a familiar conversation. Coco. Part of her wanted to ask for her help and, cautiously, she began to type. 'Something happened...can we talk...i don’t know what to do.' Again and again she tried to will herself to send something but her trembling hands daren’t commit. Coco was also struggling in the aftermath of the conclave and it would be unfair to expect her to help with this too. Deleting her last few words, she wrote a new message, one which she felt much happier sending.

BFF 👩‍❤️‍👩
GL with your shoot! You’ll be awesome! 🥰😘 luv u xxx

It wasn’t a lot but it was better than nothing...

As the message sent, Hebe suddenly became aware of a presence behind her. She'd been too engrossed in her own thoughts to hear the rhythmical beat of footfalls and so, when she turned her head, a scream threatened to slip from her lips. Clasping a hand over her mouth, her heart began to race as she focused on the shock of blonde hair in front of her.

"Are you okay miss?" His voice slurred slightly as he spoke, the overtones of cheap booze evident in his speech patterns. The guy looked like he was probably homeless, one of the down & out struggling in Seattle’s hidden world. Raggedy oversized clothes hung off his body and he clutched a half empty cider bottle in his hand. Thankfully, it was also clear that he was definitely not Kyle, which was what instinct had first threatened to tell her and this was at least soothing enough to allow her to clamber to her feet. Managing a small nod as she began to back away fron the stranger, Hebe kept her eyes fixed on his precariously wobbly form. Despite his intoxicated state, he seemed nice enough, simply enquiring as to her wellbeing...but she was wary nowadays. Her mind would only tell her that if you could be betrayed by someone close to you...then what could a stranger do?

"Are you sure?" His voice was a nearly incoherent mumble as he reached a shaky hand towards her, prompting a small growl from Virtus.

"Yes, t-thank you-" Her own words came out in a stutter as she took off again, not daring to look back until she had turned onto a busy street. The hustle and bustle of everyday people going about their business was comforting and she eventually slowed down to a steady pace. Looking around, she realised she had no idea where she was. Surely it couldn't be any unreasonable distance from the restaurant but still, she felt a sudden desire to rush home, to be away from this place. Well, not home. But at least she could drop Virtus off and then figure things out from there. She hoped so anyway...

Brunch & Bonding
L’Atelier Du Rhöne, Seattle
Ares & Hebe

a @Danvers & @Legion02 collab

“Monsieur Miknosos!” Exclaimed the Maître d’Hôtel of the prestigious L’Atelier Du Rhöne restaurant. A restaurant that would never advertise itself as a restaurant. It was a tasteful yet extravagant location. A mixture of clinical white and the deepest, most light consuming black. Specially indoor grown vines and plants separated the few tables. Creating both a visual and auditory boundary between each table. It was located on the fourth story of some office building. It is also a place you need to be introduced to. “I have your table for two ready right here.” The man guided Ares to a small table situated right near the glass. Offering a wonderful view of the nearby park and the further skyline of Seattle. Especially now during autumn the view was magnificent. “Anything else I can offer you?”

“A coffee would be fine, thank you Jacques.” Ares said as he took his seat. The man was quick to assure L’Atelier’s in-house ground coffee would be in front of him within minutes. He looked out the windows into Seattle. Normally he would be pondering on the idea that somewhere out there, he could see his brother’s killer. Was he looking back at him? Or were they arrogant enough to believe Ares wasn’t a threat? If they did, it was a mistake. But they wouldn’t be the first to underestimate him. To his own surprise though, he felt his own thoughts drift along with his vision. Towards one place, now sadly blocked by a building.

Whilst Ares mulled over murder & revenge, an extremely flustered goddess stood outside of the establishment, hands nervously twirling a strand of her long brunette locks. Gently she shifted her weight from foot-to-foot, the restless movement prompting a small whine from the canine stood next to her. “It’s okay Vivi.” Smiling lightly down at her companion, Hebe ruffled the soft fur atop her head, receiving a small lick in response. This prompted a glance of disgust from the Maître d standing in front of them, who already looked like he was dealing with little more than shit on his shoe. Letting out a sharp cough, the attention of both the girl and dog were drawn back to the overly snooty employee, whose arms moved to cross stiffly across his chest.

“Like I was saying Miss-”

“Cooper.”

“Miss Cooper. This establishment caters to a very specific clientele, which thankfully does not include broke college students.” The air of superiority around the man was almost palpable as he looked her attire up and down, a smug smile spreading across his face. “We also have a wait list of several months, which I definitely do not see your name on…”

“But I’m meeting someone here. I promise I am!" Hebe, now looking to be on the verge of tears, pulled her phone from her pocket, beginning to route through her messages. Unfortunately she’d saved everyone by their original names and she, for the life of her, could not remember what surname Ares had graced himself with. “He’s tall and erm…has dark hair and probably looks a bit grumpy?” When this still didn't grant her entry, a momentary pout graced her lips before she let out a small sigh. Even though this man was being extremely rude, she couldn't bring herself to be mad at him - maybe he just had a really stressful job or he'd forgotten to have his coffee this morning. Yet, she also couldn't stand out here forever, so she dialled her big brother's number, anxiously waiting for him to pick up.

The Consigliere of Seattle’s largest mob empire (second largest, some would say) had his contemplations interrupted when the phone in his pocket suddenly started vibrating. Who would dare!? His calendar was very specific. The following hour was reserved for his sister and his sister alone! No matter what happened. No matter if a warehouse full of cocaine was blown up or the ATF lifted an entire container worth of guns headed for Mexico. He would not be interrupted. With fury he grabbed his phone. Ready to tear who ever dared to disobey that order a new one verbally with the promise further punishment later. Yet when he saw the caller ID he instantly softened. “Hebe! How are you?”

“Ar-” Glancing at the Maître d, who had fixed her with a hard stare, Hebe moved to shift her body away from him when she heard her brother's voice. Cupping a small hand over her mouth, she began to whisper into the phone, a fretful edge to her words. “Ares, I’m sooooo sorry I’m late! I’m outside but this guy won’t let me in! He says I’m not the right er…clientele and he’s not being very nice. Help me please!”

“I see…pass me on would you please?” Ares said quite calmly as he waited to hear the Maître d’s voice.

“Alright I have had quite enough of these jokes-“ The man got in before Ares interrupted him.

“Jacques. This is Alexander Miknosos. As I understand it you are currently standing in front of a lovely lady who you’ve deigned to be ‘not your clientele’. Well may I introduce you to my niece. Miss Cooper to you. You will extend her the same courtesy you will extend me, Jacques. Do you understand?” He made an extra effort not to sound menacing for once.

“But sir- She- The way she’s dressed. It goes against all that is L’Atelier. And she has a dog! A dog sir! I cannot stand for such vulgar displays and breaches of our image.” The Maître did not have the same desire to hide away what he said. Instead he was looking straight at Hebe and Vitrus beside her with utter disgust. As if he was just asked to let in some mud-covered animal into his own kitchen.

Ares remained silent for a second. Mulling over his next words. “You will let them in, Jacques. As a favor to me.”

The other side of the phone call went quiet for a while. “Very well then sir.” Ares heard and that was enough for him to end the call and wait a few more minutes for his favorite sister to come in.

When Jacques reluctantly informed her that she was permitted to enter, Hebe rushed past him, Vivi at her heels. A blush was burning her cheeks from his earlier words, which he had made no effort to disguise. She’d thought her outfit was cute and she found herself pulling self-consciously at the edge of her top as she made her way into the elevator. Hopefully Ares wouldn’t mind that she was wearing something so vulgar...as it had been so bluntly put.

When the doors of the elevator doors eventually pinged open, Hebe couldn’t help but let out a small ‘woah’, her eyes widening at the beautiful decor that surrounded her, gaze straying with wonder over to the view the windows cast over Seattle. She probably would’ve stood there admiring the surroundings for much longer, if she hadn’t suddenly spotted her brother, a wide smile spreading across her face when she did. “Ares! Hi!” Practically skipping over to him, Hebe instantly moved to wrap her arms around him. “This place is amazing! I’m so glad that he finally let me in!” As she pulled away from the hug, Hebe happily looked up at him, any earlier apprehension immediately washed away.

Ares embraced her with the same warmth as she embraced him. All his other siblings would laugh or scoff at him but never Hebe. Never sweet, innocent Hebe. When she let go, he did so as well. “I can assure you Jacques will remember you next time. But please, sit!” He said, motioning at the chair. “Oh and Hailey. Let’s be careful with our names.” He offered with a smile, before taking a seat himself. A waiter almost appeared out of nowhere beside the table. “I shall have a Chambord croissant-“ they were made fresh by the cook, Philippe. “-with a salmon selection and…a tin of Beluga caviar, please.” He then motioned for Hebe to order whatever she desired. The menu itself showed no prices at all. Like all restaurants of this caliber, even asking towards the price would be extremely impolite.

After taking a seat, Virtus had come to sit at her side, head resting gently against her lap. Hebe moved one hand to play with the dogs soft velvet ears, whilst the other flicked through the menu, a small indecisive frown crossing her features at the luxurious nature of it. It far exceeded anything she was used to and for a few moments, she was unsure what to choose.

“Um…can I have the-” Eventually having decided, she pointed to the ‘sweet pancakes topped with caramelised labneh, syrup stone fruits and sorrel’. “Thank you!” Hebe chirped to the waiter politely, before turning back to the Olympian sat across from her. She wasn’t entirely sure what half those words had meant — normally she would be just opting for some overly sugary sweet cereal for breakfast — but she at least knew that she liked pancakes. “This place is super fancy!” She half-whispered when the waiter had gone, leaning conspiratorially towards her brother. “You really didn’t have to go to this much effort just for me…”

“Nonsense!” Ares exclaimed. “I’d move heaven and earth for my favorite ‘niece’.” Right then a waiter appeared with two flutes of mimosa. Putting them down before Ares and Hebe. For a second Ares had eyes up Vitrus. He was well aware who the dog’s true owner was. But at the same time, the way it behaved around Hebe no doubt showed it was loyal to her as well. He could despise Mars with every fiber in his being but those same fibers harbored no ill will to the creature. Dogs did not choose their masters after all. A fact Ares was painfully well aware of at times.

He took a quick sip of his mimosa before asking her: “So how have your studies been? Actually, what is it you’re studying now?” While he was truly interested, this was all just a build up towards the real reason he had invited Hebe here. The notebook in question was still on Ares’ person. He had to know if his sweet sister was in any kind of danger. The Romans could pretend they were careful and protective of her but Ares had seen the gaps in their armor already. Or were they bait setup by Janus? This was the eternal shadow game Ares was playing.

“Oh, Anthropology!” Hebe nodded enthusiastically at his question as she took a sip of her mimosa, relishing in the sweet orange taste. “It’s actually really interesting! We’re learning about hominid social structures at the moment, and how they contributed to early modern human societies…” She paused when she realised that Ares probably did not find the details of an Anthropology degree all that interesting. “Lectures are kinda boring but I’m used to that by now.” She shrugged her petite shoulders as she took another gulp of her beverage — it was far too easy to drink — and if she had been around certain other friends, she probably would’ve been tempted to make it stronger.

“How’s your er…work?” Hebes head tilted as her gaze passed back over to Ares, a look of childlike curiosity flitting across her features. She wasn’t entirely sure what he did for work but she did know that he was always very busy, so she figured it must be something important.

“Oh things are perfectly fine at Aegis Capital.” Ares said with a dismissive ease. Of course, Aegis Capital’s sole reason for existence was to offer Ares a mantle of legitimacy. It was also one of the few companies he owned that had no ties to the underworld empire he helped manage. While he disliked lying to Hebe, he preferred her not to know that technically the United States would classify him as a terrorist. Either way, he wasn’t interested in his own work. It was the infectious enthusiasm Hebe had that he enjoyed vastly more. Of all the subjects in the world, history intrigued him the most. Probably because he lived through the vast majority of it. Though admittingly Anthropology was not his strong suit.

Right then he was once again disturbed by his phone vibrating on the table. With a frown that hid a storm he picked turned on the screen while it was still flat on the table. The second he saw the message though, his scowl disappeared and his entire face lit up. He even cracked a small smile when his eyes darted over the name. Before he quickly turned the phone off again and turned all of his attention back to Hebe.

Well, it was time then. “Hebe…” He said while leaning forward. “Did you… talk to Hephaestus sometime recently?”

The goddess in question, who had been leaning forwards to try and get a sneaky peek at Ares’ phone, quickly scrambled back to her seat at his question. A mischievous smile had graced her features when she had seen him looking so fondly at his messages but this dropped away, replaced instead with an expression of soft sorrow mingled with regret. “Did I…” Hebe paused, managing to hold back the tears that always threatened to well up when she thought about Hephaestus. “No, I hadn’t spoken to him in ages. I don’t really remember the last time we did to be honest…” Distractedly she played with the edge of her napkin, gaze looking anywhere but at her brother. She still felt so bad for not having spoken to Hephaestus before he died. Maybe things might’ve been different if she had...

“Why? Did he say anything to you before he y’know…” To say that word was still too much, still too impossible. So instead she just let the idea of it hang in the air, eyes moving for a moment to glance at the blanket of autumnal colours that had spread across the trees outside. To look down from this height made everything seem so peaceful and simple, even if she knew it was only an illusion.

She hadn’t spoken to him. That was a setback for sure. The only other option he had then was for Hephaestus to have had his people tail Hebe perhaps. It’s what Ares would’ve done. But at the same time, something was gnawing at him. Why Hebe? Why was she in the notebook with the other minor gods? Why was her name circled? What if the notebook didn’t come from his brother but in fact from the stranger that entered the forge god’s apartment? In that case he would have to track those pixels back to the main in question. But that still didn’t answer why Hebe’s name was circled. Under normal circumstances, he would have a detail of Spartans on Hebe’s tail by now. But her unique lifestyle coupled with her closeness with the Romans made that impossible.

The god of war wasn’t blind to Hebe’s own feelings though. Their brother’s death still hurt her. “No… No I hadn’t talked to him either in recent times.” Ares admitted. A weird realization dawned upon him. Zeus could not stand Ares, but Hera couldn’t stand Hephaestus. Did he fail his brother? Or was it better to have stayed away? No, no it was better to stay away. Still, that and several other things began to weigh down on his stomach like stones. So when the food came, he barely touched it really.

“On to better thoughts then.” He finally said, trying to break the perhaps somewhat awkward silence between them. “Guess who I met on my way here this morning?”

“Ooh, who?” Hebe was glad that Ares didn’t want to dwell on their lost sibling for too long. There was nothing that she or he could say that would make things better, nothing that would bring him back. So when he moved on to other matters, she gladly followed along, stabbing her fork into her pancakes as she wondered who had run into. “Was it someone famous?!” She added, only half-joking. Celebrities never seemed to come to Seattle, so she was always hoping that there would be news that one had graced the rainy city with their presence.

Ares was carefully dabbing his lips clean before answering, letting the tension slowly build up. “Well… no.” He began, having a slight teasing smile on his face. “It was Chadwick. The kid surprised me to be honest. I didn’t think he’d come up all the way from Washington. He said he came up to visit you.” He would’ve invited the mortal along if the Hephaestus matter wouldn’t be raised. Sadly duty took precedence. But surely they would meet again. He only hoped he didn’t spoil some surprise now though.

At Ares’ words, Hebe nearly choked on the mouthful of pancakes she had been chewing, prompting a rather loud coughing fit. A few of the surrounding patrons turned to glare at her and she could do naught but smile at them apologetically until it was over. Her thoughts were far away from the room though, a buzz of anxiety and familiar panic filling her mind. Chad was here? Now? How did he even know she was in Seattle? And why?

Her hands had begun to tremble and she tucked them under the table, clasping them together tightly. She could feel her body beginning to shut down and the only thing that kept her from completely freaking out, was the gentle nudge of Vivis wet nose against her fingers. Oh god. Don’t freak out Hebe. Just stay calm. She could not start panicking in front of Ares. Not only would it be super embarrassing but there was also no way she’d be able to explain herself.

“W-what did he say?” She eventually managed to blurt out some words, hoping that the shakiness wasn’t evident in her voice. “I mean, I-I didn’t know he was coming to visit…”

“Oh...” Ares said. Fuck, it was a surprise. And he just ruined it. Well he would have to make it up with Chad at some point. Though it was cute how she was so nervous and fidgety when he mentioned Chadwick. Young love was like that. Electric and fiery. Everything moved fast. The thoughts made him a bit melancholic. At least sweet Hebe was being reunited with her love. “He didn’t say much. Well in all honesty I didn’t really have the time. He just told me he’d find you anyway. I guess he knows you’re living in the dorms.” Ares said as a waiter took away their empty plates. “He seemed good. Driven.” When the move to Seattle happened, it felt odd that Chadwick didn’t seem to join Hebe. “You’ll have to forgive your older brother for asking” - Ares joked - “but… why did you guys decide to break it off?” He assumed it was at least mutual. With Hebe being so cute and flustered while Chad looked driven to get her back. “Surely he would’ve come with you to Seattle? You two were so close.”

“We, I-, It well…” Struggling for an answer, Hebes lips suddenly felt uncomfortably dry and she found herself downing the rest of her mimosa, taste buds barely acknowledging the sharp citrus tang. “We just- it just…wasn’t working out.” Her voice was a mere whisper, an excuse that she barely managed to let pass her lips. Looking up at her brother's eager expression, she found herself struggling to control herself, her chest moving in and out as breaths left her lungs in shallow gasps. She couldn’t do this. She had to leave. His words were too much for her… What did he mean he’d find her? That he knew where she lived?

“I just remembered I have a sorority er, thing. I have to go...” Hebe suddenly shot up from her chair, sending her cutlery as well as her thankfully now empty flute glass clattering to the floor, the latter smashing into countless pieces. “Oh god, I’m so sorry!” She exclaimed as a waiter came rushing over to pick up the pieces, bending down to help him before he politely brushed her away. “I-I’ll pay for the mess!” Hebe turned apologetically back to Ares, it taking everything in her not to run straight for the elevator. The barest of smiles pulled at the edges of her lips as she stepped over to him, waiting for the moment in which she could dart away.

Ares was quick to get up as well when the glass broke. His friendly demeanor instantly shifted to one of control. The waiter was quick to react but Ares was already walking around the man towards Hebe. He took her hands and turned them up so he could look at her palms. No cuts. No blood. Good. That was good. He dropped his commanding presence when he cracked a smile at her, released her hands and hugged her tight. “It’s okay sis.” He said, dropping the act he’d normally maintain in the presence of mortals. Hebe was the only one who returned the unconditional love he had for her. And as he held her in his arms, he wished he never had to let go. That he could protect her from everything. That was impossible and selfish though. She was her own person with her own freedom. So as he released her after the long hug, he gave a soft kiss on her forehead. “Take care, Hebe.” And then he let her go wherever she was needed.

"Bye..." The young goddesses words were weak and lacklustre as she was released from his embrace. Normally she would love being fawned over by one of her siblings but now, all she wanted to do was run. So when Ares let her go, she turned on her heel, rushing into the thankfully free elevator. Covering her eyes when the door closed, Hebe sunk to the floor, ignoring the pleading whines coming from Virtus. Her instinct was to rush straight back to her dorm and seek comfort in the distraction of her friends, but she daren't even do that. She could barely breathe let alone think. Pressing her palms against her face, she willed herself to calm down, to pretend that it was all going to be okay, to be brave enough to face up to it...to him. It didn't work...it never did. What was she going to do?

Well she hadn’t expected that.

Well, maybe she had. It wasn’t exactly the first time she’d been socked in the jaw...after all, no-one was as aggressive as a gymnast in the height of competition season. Apart from the coaches that is.

Nevertheless, the punch had been surprisingly strong, causing her to stumble backwards, and she'd been required to reach out a hand to steady herself against a tree trunk before she lost her balance completely. Blinking, Summer slowly became aware of a sudden bloom of pain that was spreading across the bottom of her face. The pain was intense but it soon began to dull to a mere, more tolerable throbbing ache. For a second she hoped that it wouldn’t bruise, before remembering that was something she could easily cover up...especially now that she had access to the Wellsprings magic.

Looking down at her other empty palm, she realised that the ferret must’ve slipped from her grasp. No surprise that such a weaslley person would pick such a weaslley familiar. She didn’t really care about the creature anyway. It had been a crude bargaining chip and when Calypso picked it up with the aid of her magic (why she couldn’t just used her actual hands, she wasn’t sure), she inwardly shrugged her shoulders. It probably wouldn’t have been a great idea to kill the thing anyway...she was pretty certain the elders would be extremely pissed off if she had.

Arms hung at her side, Summers nails dug into the palm of her hands as several of the other initiates came running over, all keen to end the fight. It only served to irritate her further as streams and streams of empty words rushed over her head. ’Let’s cool our emotions...let’s start being civilised...let’s think rationally...' Summer wanted to tell them all to shut up. Did they not understand? Did they not know that she couldn’t? And that even if she could, she could never...would never stand for such a belonging to be taken from her.

Calypsos words in particular bit at her already short tether. For a second, a couple of tears threatened to well up at the edges of her eyes but she pushed them back, determined that she would never cry in front of such annoying people. Anyone with even an ounce of taste could see that the bracelet was no simple dollar-store item. It was pure silver, a ring of perfect (once unmarred) metal. On the inner ring was inscribed ‘SA’ but aside from that, it was simple and delicate. It’s true power came from the magic that was imbued in it. It’s why she loved it so much...it not only reminded her of her father, but she could practically feel his presence when she wore it. And it would’ve helped calm her, at least a little, during times like this...but sadly, and obviously, she did not have it on her.

Shaking herself from her reverie, she realised that the punch had affected her more than she’d initially thought. Her vision blurred for second, a fresh wave of dizziness threatening to send her tumbling to the floor. Holding her nails tightly against the skin on the palm of her hand, she let the pain jolt her awake. Fuck. If she tried to fight now she knew she would be out within seconds. Even using the small amount of magic she had planned was risky but she just couldn’t help herself.

Strolling up to Dakota, seemingly oblivious to the threat of another punch, she stared her dead in the eyes. “I’d ask you for it again but you’re clearly so obtuse that anything I say will just go straight in one ear and out the other.” Managing a grim smile, Summer lifted up a finger to prod Dakota in the centre of her forehead. The magic was subtle, flowing through her fingertips like a gentle breeze...like the fringes of a dying wave at the shore line. One moment Dakotas vision would be normal and the next it would be, well...gone. Not darkness or blackness. Gone, as if there was no input feeding into the occipital lobe of her brain. Of course it was just an illusion (and one that she knew would only last a minute or two max) but it was horrible to experience. She’d tried it on herself several times...once having lost her vision for the good part of an hour. The image of her trying to leave her room and walking into the doorframe several times would’ve been a funny one, if she’d been able to see it.

“I’ll have that back now thank you...” Summer held up a palm, initially planning on teleporting the bracelet back to herself. Yet as she did so, she felt her body weaken, threatening to collapse once more. She was running off empty and it could sustain no more magic. “I-I...” As tears of frustration actually begun to spill from her eyes, Summer suddenly charged off, straight into the darkness of the woods. Her own vision blurred a few times as she walked, body stumbling over roots and branches and rocks, but she didn’t stop. She wanted to get away from them all. She wanted to be alone...so she walked, deeper and deeper and deeper. All she could think was that her bracelet was gone. No doubt Dakota would toss it after what she'd done to her...of course she would.
