After the smoke from Cassius's explosion cleared, all that remained was a thick black fog that remained only a little while longer before it, too, dispersed. It was over quickly, but it had been enough to get Cyan's adrenaline going. Now that the chance came for him to calm down, he finally noticed how uncomfortable being completely drenched was. The air within this abandoned building had already felt unnaturally cool, but that and the water together was enough to cause the boy to shiver.

"... Katherine? Tails?"

Cyan had been temporarily distracted by his own predicament, being barely conscious from self-imposed fatigue wasn't helping much either, so he hadn't remembered to return to visibility after the battle. Nor had he been paying attention to what others were saying until Andreim spoke his name, or rather his unfortunate nickname, and brought him somewhat back to focus.

After walking out from his hiding place, a dripping wet and dust-covered foxboy reappeared in front of the stairs.
"I'm here," he said, raising his hand slightly. He tried hiding his weariness, as people would often make fun of him whenever he failed a coin-flip. However, his drooping tail that dragged along the floor kind of gave everything away. As usual.

In all honesty, Cyan kind of wanted to go back. He was cold, wet, and tired, and it's not like he was helping much anyway. Alto made a mistake choosing him to go on this mission. The others were perfectly capable of finding the missing students on their own. Andriem only spoke aloud what the boy was thinking when he said, "Hm... and try to not get in the way, Tails."

That didn't make it feel any better to hear, though, and Cyan reacted.
"Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence. Guess I'd better leave, then," he said sarcastically, tossing a dark gray coin towards the ceiling. 'Heads, I'm back at Mrs. Winter's, tails, I'm somewhere else in Rhea,' he thought, before catching the coin out of the air and vanishing.

Even he had to admit it was rather immature of him. Cyan would almost definitely regret it later, having to deal with fixing broken trust and listening to whatever scolding they'd put him through. However, he was pretty far past too tired to care. He just wanted to find someplace warm and take a nap. He'd deal with everything else later.

The Arcane Ascension series by Andrew Rowe, it's so good! Book two is coming out this year and I'm getting it as soon as it hits the shelves, I'm so hyped! The tl;dr is that it's about a world where the gods created towers at various points about the map with traps, puzzles, and enemies within. People can enter the tower and if they escape, they're blessed with a mark that grants magical power, with different marks giving different magical abilities. However, after they've gotten their mark they can go in again to attempt getting further up the tower for other rewards. It goes really in-depth about the magic system and life in a society with that type of magic, and I love it so much. I don't want to go into too much detail since I don't want to spoil it for you, but if you're even remotely interested in magic systems and/or tabletop RPG inspired fantasy, I highly recommend checking it out.

I can't say I have much experience with bad fantasy novels. As crazy as this might sound, I think Harry Potter might be my least favorite of the ones I can remember reading. There are so many books out there that I'd like to read that I just don't bother with any that might be considered poor. Harry Potter of course got a lot of hype around it so I finally got around to checking it out a few years ago and I wasn't really a fan of the writing style. It was very Roald Dahl, which I can respect as he was a famous author and an inspiration to many, but his stories weren't grounded enough for my tastes.

On the topic of fantasy, what is your favorite fantasy species and why? It can be from books, movies, games, doesn't matter, just give an explanation to what they are perhaps for those of us who might not be familiar with the material. It doesn't have to be a species you'd want to be yourself, just a species that you felt was well thought out and designed.
ANSWER: That's a really tough question, since while I have plenty of memories from before I was five, I have no sense of when they happened in correlation to each other. Using some logic, however, I might potentially get it down to a few memories.

For example, I remember the time I slid head-first down an elephant slide in a church nursery during a Thanksgiving dinner, and a pin I was wearing ripped down the front of my chest (I still have the scar, it's almost three inches long). However, I also remember being given the pin before going to the dinner, so while much less in significance, being given the pin was an earlier memory.

Another is a nightmare I had about a giant fish that could swim up waterfalls. However, I remember waking up in a hammock, and I know that me and my siblings slept on mats on the floor before we had bunk-hammocks. Therefor, I know that my incredibly simplistic and probably insignificant memory of standing in a room wall-to-wall in my many siblings' mats is older.

While I have no real way to tell whether the pin incident happened before or after standing in the room of mats, my guess is that the mats is my earlier memory.

QUESTION: If you could create a completely new biome for earth, what would you make and why? For the sake of this thought experiment, imagine that the laws of physics changed to make said biome possible, however the change doesn't impact anything else.

"Come, Cyan. We're done here. Every room is clear." Samoth's voice came from behind Cyan causing him to blink, slightly startled.
"Oh, okay. Coming." He replied over his shoulder, then glanced back down at the picture frame he was holding. After another moment's thought, he took the faded photo out of the frame and stuck it into his pocket before leaving the room and following Samoth back to the lobby staircase.

When they returned, Cassius and Katherine were already relaxing with their backs against the wall.
"Woah, you guys are fast. And I thought we did good time," Cyan laughed and waved as he approached, "I'm guessing you didn't find anyone? We didn't either." The boy walked over and plopped down next to Cassius. Just as he sat, a nearby door suddenly smashed open and swung on its hinges. Scared of potential danger, Cyan immediately leapt back to his feet to find that it was just Liselotte and Andriem finishing up their section.

"I take it all went smoothly?" Andriem asked the group after smirking at the fox-tailed boy for whatever reason.
"We didn't find anyone," Cyan repeated his earlier statement in an attempt to be polite to the other boy, but his tail's irregular movements spelled out his suspicion of them.
"I guess since everyone's here, we're ready to move on?" he asked, backing towards the rail of the staircase in order to start heading up when confirmed. That was when he heard scratching and thumping sounds coming down the stairs. "Um, guys?"

Cyan started backing away from the staircase, with his eyes on alert and his tail stiff up against his right leg. That's when he spotted a large black beast with a sleek form and burning red eyes charging down the steps straight at him, and the boy vanished from sight.

Samoth and Cyan

As Samoth neared the threshold of the room in which he had just dispatched the two beings, he heard a clatter of metal, accompanied by breaking glass.
He hurriedly stepped into the dusty hall, immediately looking to his left, towards the rest of the rooms in their section. He didn't see Cyan, nor any open doors. But what he did see was a ghostly being standing in the hall. Briefly, it seemed like it was looking for something, and started heading towards the middle of the hall.
"Cyan! Where did you go?" He called, in a hushed tone. The creatures on these grounds weren't very much of a threat, but if they got swarmed, it could be a problem.

The ghost turned its ugly gaze towards him, giving up its old target for a new one. It started moving towards Samoth, armed with the broken lamp. However, it didn't get far before its side buckled inward and it was forced to the side of the hall. It glanced back in surprise, only to get its head thrust back as it took a strike to the forehead. A deep, quiet growl came from somewhere within its throat. It was mad. Not knowing what was attacking it, but knowing where the attacks were coming from, it swung the pole in a sideways arc. However, the pole was stopped mid-swing, and the ghost took another punch to the gut. Deciding the best course of action was to flee, it dropped the lampost and floated backward through the wall, disappearing from sight.

"Here." Cyan said, breathing heavily. He appeared back into view as he turned to face Samoth. "I can punch ghosts, but it they still hold together pretty well. I was hoping it would be like punching pillows, but it's more like punching taffy I think."

Samoth watched as the ghost was seemingly pummeled by nothing.
"Next time, tell me when you're gonna do something like that. Thought one of em had got you for a second...but good job."
It made him feel slightly more relaxed to know he could at least turn his back to Cyan for a second, without him getting hurt by one of these gheists. He nodded, seemingly to himself, and turned his attention towards the next door.

One of them almost did get me for a second,' Cyan thought, but was too busy trying to calm his breathing and adrenaline to say aloud. While the younger boy took a quick rest, Samoth stepped towards the room missing a doorknob, putting his hand on the aged wood and pushing it open. It looked empty. But so had the last one, when those two things rushed him from the dark.
This room, however, was more lit. He stuck his head past the door checking behind it. Nothing. He focused his mind, searching the room thoroughly for anything that might be hiding under the bed, or behind the curtains. Nothing in this room.

He retreated from the room, moving to the one across the hall. He threw the door open, and stepped into the old room. His heavy boot caught on the rug, and he fell to the floor, instinctively putting up his arms to protect his face. "Oof!" he coughed. He heard the ruffling of movement in the room, and scrambled to his feet. Three sleeping imps did the same.

Samoth summoned an invisible hand axe to his aide, while simultaneously sending a psychic bolt at the closest Imp. Being as they were quite small, and pretty fragile, it knocked down the imp, and it lay still. The other two approaching him quicky, one with a nicked dagger and the other with a switchblade, Samoth stepped furher into the room, throwing the axe with force at the closest one. It crumpled from the pain as its ally reached within Samoth's reach.
Flailing to stab him with the knife, the Imp was met by a palm to the forehead, as the human's limbs were much longer. It then felt a swift chop strike the wrist of the knife-hand, and then was thrown and forcefully punched against the wall.

Samoth collected the bodies, silencing the one that was still conscious, and threw them in a nearby closet. He turned to the hall, and stepped out of the room.

In the mean time, Cyan had skipped a few doors ahead, and so, luckily for Samoth, had not seen his blunder. Staying close to the wall, he checked the knob. Locked of course.
'It's a good thing the wood is so old, otherwise getting into these rooms could be a real pain,' he thought, and used his elbow to crunch a small hole above the latch. After peaking in to check if the coast was clear, he reach his arm through the hole and unlocked the door from the inside, and opened it. A quick look around the small, grungy apartment proved it to be empty of any ghosts or imps, but he did find a picture frame on the dresser. It was quite faded, but Cyan could make out a middleaged woman and an older man standing in a forest of very large trees. They were wearing backpacks, and the man was holding his walking stick high in the air with one hand like he was cheering.

'If this photo is still here, then whoever lived here probably didn't move out. I wonder what happened.' The student thought, holding the picture and looking at it. He hoped they weren't one of the ghosts that stayed here now, but it did bring up the question. What did happen to this apartment building, and more importantly, what happened to the people inside?

Hey guys! I've had a bit of a black out. Hope its not too late to join in?

You should be fine, hop aboard :D

Cyan had to take two steps for each of Samoth's one, but he managed to keep up. The passed through the lobby into the equally, if not seemingly more decrepit, hallway of the northeastern section. The apartment doors were evenly spaced in a zigzag pattern. Three meters, apartment on the left, three meters, apartment on the right, three meters, apartment on the left, and so on. Across the hall from most of the doors were electric wall lamps, though some had lamps on poles connected to the ground. Of all the lamps in the hallways, all but one were entirely dysfunctional, and the one that worked was dim. Cyan wondered why it worked at all, who was paying for that? The pattern-less carpet was worn, torn, and dirty, with parts peeled back revealing a tile floor beneath.

Samoth walked up to the first door and after trying the door to find it was either locked or just stuck, he smashed it open with his boot. Cyan, assuming he could probably handle whatever was in there and if he couldn't, he could just call out, moved on to the next door. This one was missing a doorknob entirely, just having a hole on the right side. Cyan knelt down to peak inside, when he heard and loud clatter and a grunt from Samoth.

"Are you alright?" Cyan called in a worried voice, jumping to his feet and beginning to dash back to where he left Samoth. He was interrupted by a sharp pain emanating from the back of his head, and he vanished as he fell forward. Something had caused the lamp from across the hall to fall over and slam into Cyan's skull, to which he reacted instinctively by turning invisible.

After crumpling to the floor, Cyan whipped his head around to try and see what just hit him, and gasped in surprise and momentary fear at the horrific creature. Behind him was a tall, semitransparent white humanoid with sunken cheeks and dark holes instead of eyes. Instead of a nose, it had lose flaps as if the cartilage had been removed but pieces of skin remained. Its crooked mouth gaped wide open, as if one of the joints in its jaw had snapped leaving the jaw hanging to one side. Its hands were large, especially the fingers, and looked to be missing any resemblance of ectoplasmic flesh. Wrapped loosely around its body and arms were strips of "cloth" that floated slightly, as if submerged in water.

Cyan froze in place on the floor as the ghost began glancing around wildly for where he went. He'd heard about ghosts, but stories couldn't prepare anyone for their true monstrosity. Eventually the ghost stilled, appearing to be listening. Then it started moving slowly in the boy's general direction. Cyan began to panic and did the first thing that popped into his mind.
'Heads: I can punch ghosts, Tails: Ghosts can punch me.'

Materializing on his right thumb was a thin disk made of glass, clear but with a white design inside. One side showed a smiling face, the other a frowning face. Immediately when Cyan felt the weight on his fist, he flicked the coin upward, but moved his fist upward and caught it before it even began to fall. After slamming it onto his left arm, he pulled his hand back.

"There are many entities here," the older student said, looking around the large room. However, he had a slightly blank look, as if he were focusing mentally rather than visually. Welp, that probably confirms the haunting, unless there's a bunch of kids having a really quiet rave in here.
"Can you tell the difference between ghosts, imps, and people?" Cyan asked without looking at his partner. Instead, his attention was on practicing swinging his newfound weapon around in front of him. Doing so gave off several satisfying wooph sounds. That is, until the weak, worm-eaten leg broke from the force. The upper half flung wildly across the room and skid across the floor before coming to a halt just before the wall.

"...and you probably won't be needing that," Samoth said, trailing off something he had said earlier. Cyan had been distracted by his combat training exercise and missed the earlier part, but the soft crack had brought him back to attention.
"Oh, um. Yeah." The boy paused awkwardly for a second, a bit embarrassed, before tossing the piece of not-fit-for-firewood aside and sticking his hands in his pockets.

"But to answer your earlier question. Yes. My power allows me to touch incorporeal beings..disperse them, even. Imps will take a little more effort, but still..of little relevance." Before Cyan had a chance to respond, he heard a small explosion out front and Cassius skid inside, creating a trail of airborne dust as he entered. The faint smell of burnt grime drifted about the room as Cassius kicked the floor, attempting to put out his burning sneaker.

"D’ya guys mind taking the North Eastern section? Me and Katherine will take the North Western section," he offered, to which Samoth nodded, agreeing for the two of them. Immediately after, Cassius burst back where he came from. Now it seemed very little of the dust remained on the floor, and Cyan had to bring his sleeve up to his nose to avoid breathing it all in. His eyes weren't feeling too great either.

"Come, Cyan. Take it slow and stay close to me. Tell me if you see anything suspicious." Samoth said, and turned towards assumably the northeast. Cyan just nodded and followed him. He felt a bit like a kitten partnering up with a bulldog. It was unlikely he would be able to do anything Samoth couldn't just handle himself. Cyan sighed, a bit at the circumstance and a bit at himself. He needed to make sure to remember that this was about the missing students, not his adventure.

After leaving the vehicle, the first to greet them was Andriem. Or rather, he greeted Liselotte with a grand flourish and a mouthful of words, and then gave Cyan a simple greeting with a hand on his shoulder. Andriem made him feel a bit uncomfortable, there was something about him that felt subdued but hostile. Cyan wished he would get his hand of his shoulder already, even his touch caused discomfort. However, he assumed it was just his imagination and didn't say anything, not wishing to be rude.

"Do you guys want to tackle this in a three groups of two? It’s best to make sure every room in each floor is clear. We can take out floors more efficiently if we move in groups of two, and meet up at each staircase when we had cleared out our sections," Cassius offered before apologizing and suggesting they could draw lots. It seemed not many cared much about the drawing lots part, Cyan included as he wished to partner up with Cassius, but everyone basically agreed that partnering up was a good idea.

"Now please, don't all swarm me at once for partnership propositions!" announced Liselotte, standing a couple yards to Cyan's right. One might assume at first that she was joking, but being classmates Cyan knew she was actually like this, and rolled his eyes. Nobody would take up a partner proposition like tha-

"I'll be your partner, Lady Valois-Saint-Remy!" Andriem exclaimed almost into Cyan's ear, holding the fist they had rested on his shoulder up in the air. Cyan couldn't help but take a step backwards and look at him with a glance of surprise and bewilderment. Replying like that would just encourage her pride, why on earth would anyone want that? They must have some other agenda. Maybe they were after her money? Feed her ego and strike when she least expected it? Cyan didn't particularly like the haughty girl and her antics, but he wouldn't want that to happen to anyone. He'd keep an eye on Andriem, but for now the missing students were more important.

Cyan was about to ask if Cassius would be interested in teaming up with him when Samoth half-offered, half-ordered their partnership together, and proposed Cassius and Katherine to be the remaining team. Of course, he knew Samoth wasn't really ordering people around, it was just the factual manner in which he spoke that made it seem that way. Cyan had no problem teaming up with him. As Samoth turned and began moving into the apartment building, Cyan moved around Liselotte and whispered, "Be careful," as he passed, glancing in Andriem's direction. Hopefully she would understand and be wary. It was just speculation at this point, but he thought it best she at least know he could have something nefarious up his sleeve.

After passing by Lise, he sped up into a jog, heading up towards the entrance through which Samoth had gone. As he stepped past Cassius, and Katherine who put her arm around him, he turned as he moved and gave a small wave.
"See you afterwards, good luck!" he called back, before swiveling around back to facing where he was going, and he stepped in through the door.

"So I know you have some magic-stopping type power, do you think that would work on the ghosts?" Cyan asked once they were alone inside the entry lobby of the apartment building. The whole room was filled with dust, with thick layers on the floor and the ruined tables and chairs, and a haze of the stuff in the air that caused Cyan to sneeze a couple times. Beams of light shone through the grungy, broken windows. The wallpaper was peeling and gray, with hints of pale color to them. Remnants of when there was an actual pattern.

"If you can't, what do you think we could do against them? And I think there's supposed to be imps, too." Cyan bent over and picked up what once was a leg of a wooden chair. Wouldn't do much against ghosts, but imps better watch out. It's batters up!

Cyan and Liselotte

Despite the geography class being over, Cyan was still seated at his desk in the front, going back over the portion of the textbook that had been discussed. He was pretty sure he understood everything, but it was always a good idea to check. Besides, the classroom was always a tad difficult to maneuver through immediately after the bell rang as everyone tried to leave, and he didn't have anywhere particular he needed to go.

Unbeknownst to Cyan, Lise was stalking through the classroom, as stealthily as she could. Before her, today's quarry was sitting, completely defenseless. The after-school hours were perfect for fox hunting, and anyone as regal as Liselotte Castellan de Valois-Saint-Remy wouldn't call a day complete without doing something regal.

Which is why it was unfortunate that a corner of her skirt managed to catch on a chair and knock it over completely, causing a loud crash several desks behind Cyan. He glanced around in reaction to the sound, he hadn't realized anyone else was still here. And of course it was Liselotte. He tried to make no change in expression as to not give her the satisfaction of a successful tease, but his tail instinctually curled up under his chair.

"Um, class is over. Did you forget something?" he asked, pretending he wasn't pretty much exactly sure what she was doing here. As he watched her, he closed the textbook and began putting it into his backpack.

Lise folded her arms, smiling to try and cover up her true intentions. "It's not important, what I'm here for. You can just go back to reading." Her eyes wandered to the tail that was currently cowering under the chair. It immediately changed position, as if attempting to dodge her gaze. It was at that point that the deep tone of the geography teacher's voice came in over the loud speaker.
'One would never have guessed he was such a small person if they just heard his voice,' Cyan thought.

"WOULD MS. VALOIS-SAINT-REMY AND MR. BRIDGET PLEASE REPORT TO MY OFFICE."

Lise scoffed at the speaker. "Does this man not know how to address me? It's not "Miss," It's Lady Valois-Saint-Remy!" Grabbing her bag, she began storming out of the classroom before turning to Cyan. "Come on, we've got to teach him some etiquette!"

Cyan grabbed his pack and followed her, though he wasn't exactly worried about teaching any etiquette. He was more paranoid about what reason Mr. Greyfelt had for requesting them. He couldn't think of any specific action he had taken that would've gotten him in trouble. Probably. Perhaps it was about the tournament in a month? Unlikely, that wasn't exactly in the geography side of things. As he walked, his tail flicked back and forth irregularly, reflecting his thoughts.

Upon arriving at the office, Lise did not hesitate to throw the door open. "Now, from what I understand, someone is not aware of how to address a lady in this room?!" She folded her arms once again, looking indignant. The small man payed her outburst little mind, but did turn in his chair to face her as she came in.

"Ganze told me to hand you two these messages," he said mildly, handing a piece of paper out towards Lise. He didn't seem too phased by the young girls declaration. He then handed a second towards Cyan as he entered behind her. Cyan was watching Lise warily as he took the piece of paper, a bit distracted and as such missed who the message was from.

Lise narrowed her eyes, weighing the choices - ignoring the messages would most likely involve Alto, and she didn't like dealing with him. As much as she would have enjoyed to leave until the man showed her due respect, she would have to accept. "Don't think you're off the hook yet." She grumbled, snatching the paper.

They read the letters detailing the situtation with the eight missing students and the lead pointing to a haunted apartment building. Cyan's heart lept when he realized that it was from Alto, the student council president. He was famous, always doing spectacularly in the tournaments, and apparently he was giving Cyan a mission. This, however, confused him somewhat. Why him? There were probably others better at such an objective. Oh well, if Alto was putting his trust in him, then Cyan wouldn't let him down. This was exactly the sort of stuff he was hoping he'd be able to do when coming to Saint Laurel's. He turned his head towards Lise.

"Did you get the same letter I did?" he asked, forgetting that even if she did, it's not like she'd know that.

"Well, mine has my name on it, so I don't think so." Lise held out the letter in front of her, quickly skimming it. "Though, it seems I've finally been called to-" She stopped momentarily, her expression souring. "Clean an apartment? What kind of assignment is this?! This isn't what you assign royalty!!" Lise pouted slightly. "What does yours say?"

"It says some students went missing in a haunted apartment building, and I'm supposed to help find them. And it has the address, though I have to look it up. I don't really know where this street is," Cyan replied, looking down again at the piece of paper. Saying it out loud made the little adventure sound a bit more dangerous, though. Cyan of course knew about ghosts, but he hadn't really come across any. Luckily, it didn't look like they'd actually have to fight the ghosts, just find the students and get out. He then looked back over at Lise, a bit confused. "Does yours actually say to clean an apartment?"

Lise looked back at her letter. "Well, that's the summation of it..." She looked over it again, this time slower. "I suppose I misread it slightly. It seems that we both have the same assignment, Cyan."

"You can use my computer to find directions if you'd like," Mr. Greyfelt mentioned, wheeling his chair to the side of his desk with all the papers he was going through, allowing them access to the desktop computer, "Just don't look where your eyes don't belong."

Lise faltered at the mention of computers. One of the things the Valois-Saint-Remy manor didn't have was anything that advanced. "Y-Yes, Cyan should do it." She nudged him towards the computer.

"Sure..." he said, glancing at the girl with uncertainty, not quite understanding her motive. However, he walked behind the desk and kneeled a little to put himself at the same level as if he were sitting down, and pulled up a GPS website. "Mind if I borrow a pen to write this down?" he asked the teacher, who nodded and pointed towards a cup of pens with his pinky finger. There wasn't much room on the half of the desk with the computer, so Cyan had to use his leg to scribble the information down on the back of the letter. It wasn't the neatest of handwriting, but it would do. Putting the pen back where he found it, he started heading back to Lise and the door, handing her the paper of directions.
"I guess we should go together? It would probably be safer if we work together," Cyan offered. She was a bit of a pain, but it was nice to have at least someone he knew working with him. His tail, however, pulled away in disagreement.

"Consider yourself lucky, Cyan, to have none other than Liselotte Castellan de Valois-Saint-Remy to accompany you on this mission!" Lise puffed out her chest, striking a pose befitting royalty.

Lise stepped out of the limousine, taking the hand of a shadow butler. Lise wasn't the most familiar with the city, but she did know that an important part of travelling in a city is to use a limousine at all times. It definitely was better than walking. She turned after setting foot on the concrete, gesturing for Cyan to follow her.

The boy was a bit taken back by the limousine ride. It made sense that Liselotte hadn't planned on travelling by bicycle like Cyan would've, but limousine's were famously used only by rich people. He, of course, not part of such class. Stepping out of the vehicle, he took a deep breath to calm himself of such an experience outside his comfort zone, and looked at where they arrived. Yeah, no, it was pretty obvious they were where they needed to be. When a place collects enough ghosts, it just has a certain aura about it the sends chills down spines. This abandoned building was one of these places. Also up ahead, he saw some other people assembling at the wall near the front door. He recognized Samoth and his friend Cassius right away, and then there was also Katherine and Andreim. Four in total so far. While he wasn't too familiar with either Katherine or Andreim, or their abilities, Cyan knew this would probably be a piece of cake with Samoth and Cassius here.

He waved at the bunch, jogging ahead of Liselotte to meet them. "Hey! Did you guys get letters from Alto as well?" he called cheerily.
