Hi. Someone needs to do something about the quality of the crayons at restaurants. The color doesn't even stick to the menu. How am I supposed to compete with a child with these?

xxxx. Lor-Zod’s fate had been decided long before his birth, his path paved by his father before him who too was predetermined to follow a destiny decided for him by others. War was their craft to hone. The hearth by which they found solace. The only world for which they knew how to exist and exist in it they did. Zod as the general of the Military Guild sworn to protect all that was sacred to his people. To protect Krypton and everyone that called it home, and his son, Lor, carefully shaped to be the point of Krypton’s spear. The knife edge plunged into the dark to draw first blood against an enemy unaware.

Years of intense training saw a young Lor excel and eventually lead his own detachment of the Kryptonian military. Consisting of a handful of ships and their crew, they specialized in long range reconnaissance and could operate long term away from Krypton, participating in sporadic action in hostile space or, would often partner with the Explorer Guild as they searched the dark for treasures untapped and knowledge not yet learned. At a time when the golden age of expansion and discovery was already over, Lor’s was one of the few still scouring the unknown and keeping Krypton's threats at bay.

The recall of all ships caused unforeseen consequences for more than just the defense of Krypton. As her eyes turned toward herself, the skies surrounding her grew dark and the forces working against her that had lay dormant for eons began to move in that darkness unchecked. Unnoticed. Furthermore, colonies established by the Explorer Guild became vulnerable without support from their mother planet and without protection from the Military Guild. They were the first to fall.

Krypton and her people were already collapsing on themselves when an entity arrived to take from it a piece of herself. Lor was powerless to stop it.

Lor is a recent arrival on Earth, having taken refuge within Gotham proper. He hopes the dense city and sprawling crime will obfuscate him and his movement while he gets his bearings. Lor is accompanied by an AI he’s known since he was a child, commissioned by the Artisan Guild to serve the House of Zod and assigned to him at birth. Her name is Kayla and she has since been modified, giving her the ability to exist outside any traditional containment or projection apparatus as a digital recreation of a humanoid visible to all.

Theyra
Reman for a moment stared with horror at the scene unfolding as seemingly hundreds of zombies were chasing a car but heading towards them at a quick pace right before his eyes, and once he realized the great danger he and the group was in. He acted fast and brought down his binoculars, ”We need to get out of here now!” Fear was in his voice as he started to get down from the overpass and towards the cars in a frantic pace. ”There is a horde of zombies coming our way from the city chasing a car and we need to move!”

To be honest, Reman cared less about the car and more about the horde. So rather than try to follow the car and figure out where it is going. Surviving the horde is the first course of action he is focusing on. Also, he really regrets bringing Vun right now. ”Vun get back on the car now!” He yelled at his newest pet.
Exit
A single protruding orb of an eye drew lazy circles around itself until it finally settled on Reman. In it, there was no acknowledgement or any sign of it understanding what was being said. Just an empty distant look, almost as if it were peering through him instead of actually seeing him. Vun continued to chew on the weed he had pulled from the concrete and for the briefest of moments, it seemed the given command had fallen on deaf ‘ears’.

At least it did until his eyes suddenly snapped forward in the direction of the coming horde. Although it was clearly impossible for him to see what was approaching due to his position between what was essentially two hills, Vun began to move anyways. He turned around and very lazily began shuffling back to the Kyoshi.
shylarah
At Reman’s shout, Ziotea broke off her conversation with Weiyuan. “We can continue this in the car -- let’s get out of here!” She dashed for the Kyoshi, piling in the back. She did not want to deal with more zombies, especially not a hoard of them. She only had so many bullets.
KillamriX88
Weiyuan didn’t need to be told twice. He followed after Ziotea quickly… though he had to slow his pace a hair to not accidentally run the shorter woman down. As he climbed into the vehicle after her, he began to once again rethink his life choices. Why was he here? He felt all he was doing was weighing the Kyoshi down. What use was he aside from throwing himself into danger blindly and hoping his other half woke up fast enough?

Though he supposed he at least probably weighed less than Reman’s new pet.
Exit
By now, the car that was blocking their path had been mostly pushed to the side, with enough force behind Feyi that she was eventually able to coast the rest of the way with it to the wall. As soon as she hit the divider, she was out and rushing back to her vehicle, which had already repositioned itself inside the now clear lane. ”Shit shit shit.”

”Zombies?!” Sumire yelled from the driver seat. ”Those things from yesterday? What did you call them, Feyi?!”

”Possessed!” Feyi yelled back.

”Possessed?! But that’s a mouthful!”

”Are you seri- We have to go! We’ve got to put space between us and that car!” Feyi pulled open the passenger door and then stood in the frame. ”Takoa!”

Takoa was already halfway down the other side of the offramp. In short time, he’d cleared his side of the highway and vaulted across the divider in a single leap, diving for the door in the back that was opened for him. As Feyi climbed in and shut the door, her vehicle began pulling off. Another door in the back was opened and held ajar for Tenet who was waiting up ahead. Feyi pulled up beside him, loaded him in and peeled out. Behind her, Sumire followed in the Kyoshi after everyone who had stepped out had piled back in. Pressed for time as they were, she remained in the driver seat. The crew borrowed from the travelling merchant followed at the rear, keeping pace with the two cars ahead of it.

No sooner had they left the overpass did the mysterious other vehicle arrive. It didn’t slow, and with how fast it was moving, it was difficult to tell exactly who or how many occupants there were inside, but it mattered little. As it approached the end of the overpass, it hit a hard turn, whipping itself around to face West to match the direction of the fleeing convoy and flew down the offramp in their direction. In short time, it had closed the gap between it and the three cars and was riding tandem with them, the dust from the road, biting wind and a concrete divider the only thing separating the two groups.

Like every vehicle encountered in the Wilds so far, this one too was cobbled together from a collection of scavenged scrap parts and welded together onto the frame beneath, and just like every one of those vehicles, ingenuity and engineering born from life beyond the walls ensured it survived long after it should have fallen apart. The main difference was its size. It was small, clearly built for speed and whatever modification had been slapped onto its shell was there to keep little more than the dust and rain out. Through the open windows, three individuals could be seen: two in the front and one in the back. The driver kept his eyes forward while the other two peered at the central vehicle, the Kyoshi, with mild interest.

Summary. Feyi begins to push the vehicle out of the way with help from Sumire. Meanwhile, Reman discovers that a familiar danger is very quickly approaching.

Prompt:
Short descriptions of the occupants: The driver has short dark hair. He’s wearing goggles and his face is half concealed beneath a red handkerchief that is wrapped around his mouth and nose and tied behind the back of his head. He is wearing a faded green puffer jacket that has a few old stains and some tears in the fabric along the arm.

The passenger is not wearing any face coverings. He has shoulder length, dirty blond hair that seems greasy and matted. It tumbles about awkwardly in the wind, often slapping himself in the face though he’s ignoring this. Through squinted eyes, he seems to be attempting to peer into the Kyoshi though windows are up and it’s difficult to see through them from the outside. This man is wearing layers with the outer shell a faded gray field jacket and a black hoody beneath it with the hood spilling out the back. A hand is hanging out of the passenger side window and there is a gun in his hand.

In the back, the third individual is wearing a beanie and is wrapped in what looks to be a blue nylon windbreaker and worn and faded jeans. However, he’s not sitting in his seat like the other two are. He seems to be bracing himself against the far passenger door with a leg resting across the seats and the other disappearing into the bottom of the car. A camo backpack is lying on the seat in front of him and on top of that is an odd looking object that could easily be mistaken for a rifle. Or perhaps it is a rifle. Although technically facing in the general direction of the Kyoshi, It is not being held by him as if he means to use it. The butt of the weapon is sitting on top of his shoulder while the rest of the barrel is angled down and slightly across his body, with the end of it disappearing into the bottom of the car.

Whoami
Shun Zhi laid in bed, his wife pressed to his side as he cradled her in one arm. She had her head nestled into his neck while her hand laid on her chest and drew lazy circles. He breathed deep, his eyes staring up at the ceiling as he reflected on things with a stoicism that made him difficult to read. His wife, Mei, had tried many times to pick at his brain, but she had given up a long time ago. She knew that the things that occupied Shun Zhi's thoughts were the things few men could freely talk about. A golden light shone through their bedroom window, casting a ray that stretched across their bed and the tangle of blankets and sheets. The chirping of a bird just out their window was all Shun needed to snap out of his reverie, reminding him of the hour. He brought a hand up to his face and took in a slow breath through his nose as he pinched the bridge and rubbed his eyelids. Shun felt Mei shift and press herself harder against him, wordlessly demanding he stay longer and enjoy the moment. Shun took another breath and relaxed, his hand drifting down her back gently to caress her. This was nice. Peaceful. If he could, Shun would rather spend the whole day like this. But then the alarm clock went off, filling the room with chirps and beeps as the window blinds automatically began to furl up and fill the room with more light.

The couple groaned and lazily started to pull themselves apart. All so Shun could reach over to the alarm clock and set it to snooze for just, "Five more minutes..."

But Mei had already begun to sit up. "If only~ Give it five seconds." she responded, counting with her fingers in the air. On the fifth second, their bedroom door swung open and a small child stormed into the room, bringing all of the day's chaos with him.

The child jumped onto the bed and began to shake Shun to full wakefulness. "Grandpa! Wake up! It's time to wake up!"

Shun shook in place as he stared at his wife. She was chuckling. "How did you know?"

"This day comes only once a year. It amazes me how you always remember one half of it and totally forget the other." she said with a smile.

"Grandpa! We made you breakfast! Hurry up and get dressed!" the child said, continuing to vigorously shake Shun awake.

He looked to his grandson and smirked at him before snapping his hands up to his sides and beginning to tickle his ribs. The child's laughter filled his ears and invigorated Shun. "Very well, Qiang Zhi! But you should know, waking a man and tearing him from his wife's embrace risks overwhelming amounts of ticklish wrath!"

He could smell the fresh food wafting into his room from the kitchen. Mei was roused enough by it to climb out of bed and throw her house robe on. She made her way to the door and looked back at Shun and their grandson. "I had the staff take the day off."

Shun looked past Qiang and grinned, "Ever the merciful wife."

Mei smiled and looked to Qiang, "Come along, Qiang Zhi. Let's let your grandfather get ready for breakfast, hm?"

Qiang looked back to Mei and smiled bright before scrambling off of the bed almost as quickly as he had sprung into it. Mei took the small child by the hand and led him out of the room. Shun remained in bed for just a moment longer before finally pulling himself from the comfort of the sheets. As he stood, he stretched his arms out wide, his spine cracking in some places. He stepped into the room's bathroom and splashed some water into his hand before looking into the mirror for just a moment. He stared himself in the eyes, then his ears began to ring. He clenched his jaw and closed her eyes, trying to grit the ringing back. He could feel his muscles twitching then, and a pressure building behind his chest. Shun gasped quietly and reached for the mirror, pulling it aside to open the medicine cabinet behind it. He swiped a prescription bottle from it and flipped the cap open. Two pills fell out into his palm, the last two in the bottle. He wasted no time in downing them dry. It took a few seconds, but the ringing and discomfort would subside. Shun grimaced as he looked back to himself in the mirror. Everything looked in order. His eyes turned down to the bottle flipped on its side. He had a clear view into the container. It was empty. That made his brows furrow some. He set the bottle back upright before splashing his face with more water and cleaning himself for the day's activities. He was dressed in a suit and tie at the end of it all, but before he left the room, Shun took the empty medicine container and pocketed it.

When he emerged in the kitchen, Shun found himself staring at his family which was gathered around a large table. His wife was sitting in her seat, sipping some morning tea. His grandson sat in the lap of Susu, his daughter-in-law. She was too busy doting on Qiang to see Shun as he arrived. Next to her was his son, Tien. His hair was slicked back, and he wore his sharp police uniform. He was sipping a cup of coffee and reading the morning's news. He had gotten far in the police for his age, just like Shun had when he was his age. Tien made Shun as proud as any father could be. The one to greet him however was his daughter, Yumei. "Happy forty-seventh birthday, father." she said sweetly.

Shun smiled softly at his daughter and bowed his head before replying, "And happy nineteenth birthday to you, Little Petal."

Yumei beamed at his response. Shun loved that he got to share his birthday with his daughter. It truly was a stroke of luck that made it all the more special. Yumei set down a cake on the table, "I figured we could start with the sweets early today."

That made Qiang cheer excitedly in Susu's lap. Mei had to raise a finger and temper the child's expectations, "After a proper breakfast, young man."

The child huffed and looked down to the plate that was set in front of him and puffed his cheeks. Tien glanced over to his son, "Eat up, son. You cannot grow strong on sugar alone."

Shun smirked and looked back to his daughter, "I have a present for you."

Yumei blinked at her father and tilted her head, "You don't have to, father. Please."

Shun shook her head and rounded the table, pulling a small rolled up scroll from his pocket. It was sealed with a wax emblem of Ba Sing Se. "Oh I think I do, Little Petal." he held the scroll out to her, "You wouldn't want to keep the king waiting would you? I hear he is eager to hear your singing."

Yumei's eyes went wide as she snatched the scroll and hurriedly opened it for a read. "I- I need to rehearse! I need a new gown and- and perfume!"

Mei spoke up, "And my gift to you. A new gown. And perfume."

Yumei looked from her mother to her father before throwing herself into Shun's arms. He embraced her gently before gently directing her to her seat. "Breakfast first, yes?"

He rounded the table and sat down at the end of it. He could feel the empty pill bottle in his pocket press against his leg. It reminded him to look to Mei, "Has this month's medication package arrived?"

Mei pursed her lips and shook her head. Qiang heard the question and looked up from his plate, "Grandpa? Why do you need medication?"

Mei turned to look across the table at her grandson, "Your grandfather saved the city. But he got hurt in the process. Do not worry yourself, young Qiang. He is okay." She then looked back to Shun, concerned by the oddity of the late package. Shun saw the look on her face.

"I am sure it will arrive soon. But I will ask about it today." he reassured her. Mei nodded quietly.

The sound of a phone ringing snapped the married couple back to the moment. They looked over to Tien who was promptly standing up from the table and answering. He had barely touched his food by the time the phone rang. Tien came back and collected his coat before kissing Susu on the cheek and ruffling Qiang's hair. "Duty calls... Of all days."

"The C.R.T is better with you there, Tien. Do not jeopardize them on my behalf. Go. And be safe." Shun said.

Tien nodded and placed a hand on Shun's shoulder as he passed to make his leave. "Happy birthday, father."

Shun waited for him to leave before resuming his breakfast. The food was hovering in front of his mouth when yet another phone call chimed up. This time, it was his.
canaryrose
The phone rang a few times before the line connected and the voice of Shun Zhi became audible on the other end. His voice was deep, husky. Intimidating… which made sense, given his reputation and his profession. Or maybe that was just generally true for Piperunners. “Mr. Shun Zhi. Good morning, and…” An flipped a page in her folder over, audibly. “... happy forty-seventh birthday. Do you have a moment to talk?”
Whoami
Shun stared at Mei and his daughter as he took the phone call. He didn't recognize the voice immediately, but the ID on his phone was unmistakable. SynEn. Shun took a slow breath. Work was the last thing he wanted to hear about on this day of all days. But he kept it cordial when the woman wished him a happy birthday. "Thank you. And that remains to be determined. Who do I have the pleasure of speaking to?"
canaryrose
“Apologies for the interruption,” An said, smooth. “My name is Ms. An Tamura. I’m the Director of Operations. I oversee the majority of our out-of-office staff, including our Piperunners. It is very nice to meet you, Mr. Zhi.”
Whoami
Shun stood up from his seat and nodded to Mei before pivoting and leaving the kitchen. He let out a quiet sigh and listened to An introduce herself. He raised a brow curiously, "Sumire usually handles my operations." he said matter of factly.
canaryrose
“Ms. Sumire?” There was a pause as An flipped the page again. “Oh, yes she does. Hm. This is different, Mr. Zhi, I’m not an operator. I’m calling because we have a new assignment for you. You’re being recalled to the storage facility, effective immediately, and we’ll speak personally about the assignment there. We’ll meet at twelve o’clock, unless you have any other pressing obligations.”
Whoami
"Is that so?" Shun Zhi said as he stroked his goatee thoughtfully. He glanced back toward the kitchen where his family gathered and enjoyed one another’s company. Unfortunately, he was rather obligated to answer SynEn’s call to action. He clenched his jaw and closed his eyes as he rubbed them, "Very well…" he said with a pause afterward, "This better be worth my time, Ms. Tamura. I will not sugar-coat it. The timing of your call is very much not appreciated."
canaryrose
“... I understand your frustration, Mr. Zhi.” The response came delayed but smooth, not betraying the discomfort An felt at his voice. Shun heard the response and snorted through his nose. But he didn’t comment on it further. “Rest assured that this is urgent. We wouldn’t be recalling you without prior notice otherwise. Would you like me to send a car to your home, or do you project that you’ll be able to arrive at the storage facility on time?”
Whoami
"Send a car, and give me the details on the way. The sooner your errand is taken care of, the happier we all will be." Shun hung the phone up before An could get another comment in. He heard movement behind him and glanced back over his shoulder, seeing Mei in the doorway.

”Work?”

"... Yes."

”Today? Of all days? What about Yumei’s performance for the king?” Mei asked with a frown.

Shun frowned at that as well. "She will understand…"

”Well I do not. I know SynEn saved you and brought you back to us, Shun. But surely with your status you can have this wait another day?” Mei crossed her arms.

Shun turned to face her, "It isn’t so simple." He said as he nodded over her shoulder to the empty pill bottle on the table. Mei followed his gaze to the bottle and let out a sigh.

”I see…”

"I will make sure whatever they ask of me is done as quickly as possible. I promise you, Mei."

"How recent does this look to you, Feyi?"

"It's a little hard to tell."

Feyi pressed a finger against the back of the seat, smudging a mostly dried stain that was blotted across the worn fabric. The darker layer chipped away revealing a lighter red hue beneath and smeared ever so slightly as she dragged her finger across. "This blood isn't completely dry," she reported, stepping out of the doorframe and studying the red mark on her fingertip. "And the engine's stopped smoking. This couldn't have been more than a few hours or so. Maybe just before we scouted it earlier." She stopped looking at her hand and paused when Ziotea had caught up to them and began collecting the items in the back, as few as they were. It was odd, seeing a vehicle so obviously repurposed in such a way so as to maximize its cargo space, only for it to have been carrying so little. There were very few scenarios where that made sense. "Whoever was here must have already picked it clean and left before we saw anything, but then why'd leave the water behind?

Feyi turned to look down the road, past the rest of the stopped vehicles and past Tenet, who was still standing sentry and keeping his eyes West. The highway continued for miles before turning North where it began circling around the outskirts of Gaoling to its far side. Feyi could see between them and there another overpass not too far up the road. She could also see breaks in the center divider, although she couldn't tell if any of them were large enough to allow their vehicles to pass through.

"We're not that far from the last confirmed sightings of the kidnappers. This could be related so now might be a good time to stop and see if we can pick up any tracks. But not right here. Let's push this out of the way and then maybe get off the road as soon as we can. We'll find a spot to stop closer to the forest."

Feyi was already back in the car when she'd finished the sentence, shifting the gear and setting the wheel so that when pushed, it'd settle in the open space between another disabled vehicle and the wall. There was no point in checking to see if it'd start. The smoke from earlier and the hole Jin had pointed out, not to mention the damage to the dash and parts of the interior was more than enough to tell her that they had no other option but to push. Thankfully, pushing wouldn't be a problem. One of Feyi's men had moved to the driver seat and was already inching the car forward. On her command, the two of them began pushing the car out of the way. It wouldn't take long to clear the obstruction.

As the two of them got to work, Reman was busy at his post discovering for himself disturbing answers to his questions. What had initially begun as only a few silhouettes had very quickly turned to tens and then hundreds, all of them running toward something unseen. But no sooner had Reman began to ponder the nature of the mysterious object did it make itself known to him. A vehicle, not unlike the rest they'd seen combing the waste, rounded a bend and begin tearing down the street away from the group chasing it. It was heading very quickly in Reman's direction and on the very road that led straight to him and the overpass he was standing on. Judging by the speed, Reman figured it would be on him in little more than a few minutes, and although the group chasing after the vehicle was rapidly falling behind, they were not overly slow and they showed no signs of stopping.

Yet this was not the most troubling thing about what he was witnessing. As the main group began flooding the road, it quickly became apparent that they were not the only ones giving chase. More flailing silhouettes began appearing from every path leading out of the city, some even from the walls of the city itself. Reman would witness bodies begin pouring out of broken windows or otherwise smashing through them in a desperate attempt to reach their prey along the shortest route possible, regardless of what hazards lay between them. Regardless of height. Any that survived the fall would simply get up and join the rest of the swarm as it headed South and in the general direction of the fleeing car.

Location. The Wilds, Westbound from Tu Zin.
Time. Noon, SE+12
___________________________..............

Interactions. Everyone.

Prompt:
Reman. It's almost too close to tell for certain, but it seems like the people giving chase are mostly concentrated to this side of Gaoling. They are filtering from the closest buildings East of them (relative to the city itself). This means that they'll be behind the caravan shortly after the main body of the 'herd' reaches the overpass and will in essence collapse on the group from two sides.

Everyone. Barely noticeable above the low rumbling of the Kyoshi and the ambience of wind sweeping across an empty road, is the muted sound of another engine roaring somewhere in the distance. The sound is steadily growing louder. Just below that is the sharper sound of glass breaking, also muted.
