Goodbye, catfriend. I hope you don't get turned into a Kamal battle flag
Hey guys, I'll be leaving the voting thread for Gratis up for a little while longer, and during that time I will also be working on the next prompt! I expect to have it ready by the 14th.

Voting and Critique

Welcome to another round of voting!

I encourage everyone that cares about the Contests(and if you don't already, I encourage you to begin now) to read through all of the wonderful entries submitted in the past two weeks, and cast their vote for their favorite! The submission with the most votes will be posted in a stickied "Trophy Case" thread where it will be displayed for all to see, and its author added to the list of Meritorious Writers at the very top!

Of course, this thread is also for critiquing. Note I said critiquing, not shitslinging. Constructive criticism only, please. Feel free to go through any one or all of the entries and give your two cents in helping your fellow writers improve! Those that have entered this contest are absolutely allowed to critique each others' works, contestants can absolutely vote, though not for their own, obviously.

Needless to say, using multiple accounts to vote more than once is NOT ALLOWED, and if an author uses alts to vote for their own work, they will be disqualified on the spot and disbarred from entering any future Contests.

Please vote based on the merits of the work, not for the sake of a clique or just because the author happens to be your friend. And mostly certainly do not attempt to have an author falsely disqualified because you don't happen to like them, because I'll fucking find out and it won't be pretty.

Would have considered joining, but with the contests coming out more or less whenever frizan and co feel like it, I was unable to anticipate it and set up other arrangements. That, and I'm now GM/Co-GM of 3 games now. I'm still not sure how that happened.

Regardless, I've read both entries and eagerly await the chance to cast my vote.

@Frizan

Yeah, I really do apologize for how...sporadic the contests can be. I'm going to try to set a schedule in the future, so there can be a bit of consistency in everything.

Thankfully, I already pretty much have this month's contest figured! Given the holiday it's probably fairly easy to guess what it's going to be, but fuck it real life is shitty on its own. I would prefer, if at all possible, for my fiction to be a bit more chipper.

Besides, it's a fun concept anyway.
Hello again everyone! I know a lot of people are still reeling from the effects of Thanksgiving, be it a wicked stomach ache or coming back home from visiting far away relatives, but I just want to give a reminder for the Contest! Officially, as of the very moment, the deadline is the 30th of this month. However, like I said in the prompt and entry thread, I am more than willing to give an extension if needed! Just let me know!
I have a story written. It is being edited for grammar mistakes and shall be submitted soon. However, it is probably too passive, again. Ah! C'est la vie!

Edit: Passivity x Infinity & Beyond!

Also, crikey, Briza! That was fast! I like it, though. Short and ever-so-sweet, and sprinkled with the main character's pomp for a bit of depth.
um... what exactly is the prompt? We couldn't get any real sense of what it was from reading it.

Yeah I do apologize for that. It was late and I was having a lot of trouble wording the prompt. I about scrapped it, to tell the truth.

Basically, write the sappiest most diabetes-inducing Christmas story possible. Just make sure the person/thing doing the good deeds are not compensated. Gotta give it from the heart, yo.

Oh, and the movie that inspired me to make this prompt wasn't intended to have any real bearing on the actual content of the entries. It really was just a fun fact. I recommend everyone sees it, though! Pay It Forward is a nice little movie.
Feel free to direct any feedback or questions here! Please keep discussion relevant to the associated contest. All other Guild posting rules also apply.

I wrote out this prompt while listening to "His Dream" from the Nier soundtrack. It's a nice piece.

Fun fact, this prompt was inspired by the movie Pay It Forward

There's always someone out there that needs help. Fortunately, there always seems to be someone out there willing to lend a hand. Of course, often times the problem of payment arises...after all, time, like money, is precious. Who can really be expected to give their blood, sweat and tears for naught but thanks?

Sometimes, though, those people can arrive, and they are a flame in a cold world. There simply are some people who would give everything for nothing, and then more. "But Frizan", you shout from your desk of pens and paper, "the stories of these people are oft told already! Why tread trodden ground?"

And I would answer, "But how often do these stories of selflessness end with the hero being bestowed with glory, gold, and an attractive partner to boot? It was not their intention, indeed, but they were still rewarded!"

Winter is upon us, and with it comes the dark and the cold. Gather 'round the hearth, and share your tales of the strong and the humble, those who wanted nothing, needed nothing, and asked for nothing, but gave every fiber of their being. Those who accepted only the barest of thanks in return, if that. As the chilling winds breach our cloaks, our platemail and our blackened leathers, it is a time to warm the body...and the heart.

Contest Rules

1. If you guessed "characters cannot be compensated in any material way", you win! ...what do you mean "what did I win"? Didn't you read the prompt?

2. Take the time to show the struggles of those in need. Paint a picture as to why your character/party/force of heartwarming goodness is required. Maybe your characters have crucial skills those they are helping lack? Or perhaps they have simply lost the will to go on and fight for a better day.

3. We've focused on motives before, now hit on those emotions! Go for gold, and write scenes that would soften the heart of my feared beloved GM Glaciercold himself. I want TEARS, people! And BIG ones too!

4(optional). When your character/party/force of heartwarming goodness eventually leaves, spend a brief paragraph or two detailing what happens to those they have helped. Did their lives turn around? Any lessons learned? Maybe even put a moral or two in there!

5. Please title your entries!

6. There will be a total word cap of four thousand for this prompt.

Grounds for disqualification

1. Plagiarism.

2. Your entry having no clear connection to the prompt.

3. Gratuitous violence or gore.

4. We probably won't be experiencing any of this due to the nature of the prompt, but I gotta cover all bases. No explicit sex scenes. Fade to black is fine.

The deadline is going to be a bit further along than usual due to the holidays coming up. I am obviously open to requests for extensions as well. Please submit your entry here in the Prompt and Entries thread by Friday, November 30th. Direct all questions and feedback to my PM box or the associated Discussion thread, and I will gladly answer them.

Please hold off all votes and critiques until the proper thread has been erected for this prompt.
