The chūnin exams begin today.

Young shinobi from all five of the great shinobi villages were gathered in Konoha, accompanied by their jonin squad leaders — along with a few participants from some of the smaller shinobi lands. The annual chūnin exams were a huge deal for shinobi everywhere. They dictated what the future looked like. The villages with the strongest showing in the exams would get the most work following them, and the village with the most work would have the most money, and thus be the strongest village.

Truth be told, it wasn’t too common for the Kage of the host village to address the genin so early — typically, it was saved for before the finals… but Kaminari Masuyo was far from a common Kage. Plus, her own son was among the gathered genin, and she wanted to at least see him before the exams started.

That was why the Lady Hokage was standing in front of all the gathered genin in the staging room before the first phase of the exams. It was time for her favorite part of the job: speeches.

Smiling out at the genin, Masuyo shifted her Kage headpiece and prepared to officially initiate the exams.

“Welcome to the chūnin exams. Most of you have been preparing for this all your life… and it will be the toughest challenge you’ve faced yet. The chūnin exams are going to be your first real test as shinobi — it won’t be like the standard missions you’ve been completing during your time as genin. But, all of you have been marked as ready for examination by your assigned jonin leaders.”

A brief pause as she let her words sink in.

“The exam will be in three parts, each more dangerous than the last. I’m going to be very, very frank with all of you. There is a chance some of you may die. However, that’s a risk I and my fellow Kage are willing to take. If you want to leave, leave now. If you want to stay, then you can wait in this room for when the proctor for the first exam comes to fetch you. Feel free to talk to one another, but just know that during these exams… The only allies you have are the genin from your squads. Everyone else — yes even genin from your own village — are enemies.”

“Good luck, you’re probably going to need it.”

With that, Masuyo turned, with her cloak sweeping behind her, before she left out the door… and left the gathered genin to their own devices.

Our story begins with the genin gathered together in a large room, surrounded by ninja from different villages, and their own fellow Konoha rookies! For now, write your introduction posts and interact with your teams and the other rookies. Once all of the characters have been introduced, there will be another GM post in which the proctor will come and collect you all for the first, and by far the most difficult, part of the exams: the written test!

- Tetsu: For Tetsu, we'd like to see you change from being both a genius and having larger than average chakra. Please pick one of those two things, and for now stick to techniques that Gaara was using in part one of Naruto. Let's save the stuff from Boruto for at least after the timeskip.
- Yachiyo: For Yachiyo, the only issue we have is having both fire and water natures (even in the future). We talked about it some and think this would take years and years to get to. If you can remove one of those, we think it's fine!
- Satoru: Please make a decision on whether or not you want to commit to Byakugan and taijutsu, or Byakugan and ninjutsu. After some discussion we don't think you should have the Eight Gates if you're not going to commit to it as a main gimmick; letting something like that scale off in the late game doesn't feel right to us. We'd also like you to remove prodigal levels of chakra. We don't want many people running around with too much chakra, it'll make fights less fun.
- Usagi: There's really only one thing and it's not a huge deal, but ANBU is a position, not like a strength level. They're basically ninja CIA and don't really take medical nin with them when they go out. I suggest changing this point to just say 'jonin level!'

Once the WIPs are finished, we'll review those, too.

Born to the Kaminari clan, Hikaru is brimming with natural talent, and considered a genius by most of his peers and instructors.

Or, at least, it’s what people expected of him. Reality, however, is often disappointing.

Hikaru is a post-war baby, born to parents who couldn’t make it all the way home before they got at each other. By the time they’d traveled across the nations and back to the Village Hidden in the Leaves, Masuyo was five weeks pregnant. Hikaru grew up with an older brother who was a prodigy and parents that were deciding factors in the war. Both of his parents were exceptionally influential in the war; after one particular battle, where the pair were said to have fought off a thousand shinobi — each. Following that fight, both Masuyo and Daisuke Kaminari were left with a unique designation from the enemies of the Leaf:

Run on sight.

Ever since he was old enough to talk, Hikaru has been convinced that one day he’ll have that same designation.

Unfortunately for him, he’s had trouble getting there. While Karu’s heart has always been in the right place, he wasn’t born with a lot of natural talent — not gifted, like his older brother Kenshin. He’s not a ninjutsu genius, like his mother. And he certainly doesn’t have the control of the clan dojutsu, the Sharingan, that his father has.

In fact, Karu dragged himself through the Ninja Academy kicking and screaming, and relying on his friends (now squad mates) for assistance. He didn’t understand why he wasn’t as good as his family members, and to this day he still doesn’t. Even with the famed Kaminari blood, Karu has been decidedly average, or even below average in some respects. To their credit, Karu’s family has been nothing but supportive in his struggles — there’s no disappointment from his parents, and no resentment from his brother. And Karu feels the same way. It isn’t their fault that something isn’t clicking with him.

Once he graduated from the Academy, and finally pulled the Leaf headband onto his forehead for the first time, Karu couldn’t have been prouder of himself. It was a long road to get there, and truth be told he wouldn’t have made it without his friends or a dash of dumb luck… With that burst of motivation, Hikaru has trained obsessively. While his goal isn’t quite as squishy as other people his age — a lot of them want to be Hokage and as the Hokage’s son, Karu can confidently say he doesn’t want that job — it’s a goal nonetheless, and Hikaru has dedicated himself to it entirely.

He works hard, and he never gives up. In fact, his obsession with training and pushing himself endlessly has proven to be unhealthy at times. More than once, Kenshin and his parents have had to scrape his exhausted, heavily sleeping body off of the ground in the training area. More than once, Hikaru has woken up and done it all over again. If it wasn’t for the Kaminari blood, he may have in fact worked himself to death already.

More than once, Hikaru has bit off more than he can chew, and landed himself, or the entirety of Squad Three in trouble. More than once, Hikaru has fought his way out of it and come home covered in bruises and cuts to ‘sleep it off’ with a quip of ‘you should see the other guys’ in Kenshin’s direction.

It’s all paying off.

Hikaru has recently hit his stride as a ninja, and as a Kaminari. He’s leaps and bounds better than the kid who could once barely name the different hand seals that form the basis of ninjutsu. While he may not have the natural abilities of his family(or even have awakened his Sharingan), Hikaru has something proving to be even more valuable.

The will to never give up, and push past the boundaries of his limits.

_{C H A R A C T E R D E V E L O P M E N T}

Hikaru’s story is one of never backing down. I mostly designed him because I want to see what a character who has the Sharingan on his side, but lacks the genius status of most of the canon users is like. Hikaru will eventually unlock his dojutsu and its abilities, and by the time we get to the meat of part two,l he’ll have hopefully overcome his limitations further.

After all, he’s got to take it even further beyond.

To do so, I’d like to have someone play his mentor! Someone who can totally teach him the Rasengan.

• The Will of Fire: Truth be told, Hikaru doesn’t have much in the way of skills or talents. The main source of his success can be attributed to his unbending will and refusal to give up — one way or another, Hikaru is going to make his village proud of him. The will of fire burns bright inside of him, driving him to keep moving forward and become someone who the people of the Leaf can look up to, and rely on for protection. So far, at least the kittens of the Leaf can rely on him!
• Looking on the Bright Side: As much a s kill as anything else, the infectious good mood and optimism of Karu is as helpful to his team’s success as the Ketsuryūgan or the Mori’s fūinjutsu. Or at least that’s what he likes to tell himself!
• Creativity: Karu is a very creative young man, doing the best with what he has. He’s more or less made up his techniques as best he could. It’s a start, but it’s nothing special. Not yet anyway.
• Naming Techniques: The truth is, all of Karu’s attacks are nothing special. They’re a combination of low level attacks and flurries of taijutsu moves. It tends to work out in the end, mostly because Karu has improved leaps and bounds since the Academy, but… Karu thinks it’s because it’s a lot scarier getting hit by ‘Ten Thousand Flying Knives of Death Jutsu’ instead of ‘shuriken jutsu.’ Don’t break his heart and tell him the truth.

• Lunchbox: One of the most important tools in anyone’s arsenal, shinobi or otherwise. Karu’s is always loaded with the most quality of mom-packed lunches, and with enough to share with his squad too (the Hokage can cook, who knew?)
• Kaminari Class Kunai: These are really just special kunai that Karu got from his parents. He tries not to use them, because he’s saving them for something big. The pair of kunai are the ones his parents were carrying during their most famous battle. He wants to do them justice!
• Rope: What? When doesn’t rope come in handy?

• Kaminari Wind Tunnel Burst Technique: Utilizing Wind Release, Hikaru is able to increase his movements by creating an effective wind tunnel around himself. Eventually via using Shadow Clones, Hikaru can generate more wind, and thus more speed. He believes that with the proper training, he could go even faster. Hikaru usually uses this to increase his taijutsu potential, or in most some cases, to catch runaway cats.

• Hikaru Sliding Rush: Usually used in combination with a Kaminari Wind Tunnel Burst Technique, Hikaru unleashes a barrage of kicks that are lightning quick — impossible to be seen by the human eye (or even the Sharingan, or so Kenshin tell him).
• Ten Thousand Flying Knives of Death Jutsu: Hikaru launches himself into the air, and spins, throwing out… ten shuriken. It’s just a fancy name for a shuriken jutsu.

One of the Leaf Village’s many, many prodigal sons, Samuru was born and bred for the work he ended up doing. A member of one of Konoha’s oldest clans, the Kurokawa, Sam had a lot of expectations as he went to the Academy. With the combination of the ‘state of things,’ and his own prodigal skills, Sam breezed through the Academy and found himself in the ANBU black ops at a very young age, alongside one of the other members of his previous genin squad — Kaminari Satoshi.

Together, the pair worked with an ANBU squad throughout the war until Satoshi’s death near the end. Following his best friend’s death, Samuru took over the leadership of their ANBU team. For the remainder of the war, Samuru led them through various successful missions, and minimal mission failures. When the war ended, Samuru worked with a handpicked squad to clean up a few messes left over from the war — rogue ninja sects, a few diehards here and there who weren’t ready to call it quits yet… — at the request of the newly appointed Hokage.

After that, Sam wanted one thing: to live a peaceful life. With the approval of the Hokage, Samuru stepped down from the ANBU Black Ops and accepted a position as a ‘de-activated’ Leaf jonin. After that, he left the village and spent the next few years roaming around the world in search of exquisite cuisine, something he and Satoshi had shared an interest in when they were younger.

Quietly fulfilling a promise to his dead friend to try all the different foods in the world, Sam was content if nothing else. In fact, he was getting quite used to the hermit lifestyle, until three years ago, when the Leaf called on him for his service once more…

This time as a bloody teacher… Every day, Samuru curses Kenshin’s name for getting him into this. But, it could be worse.

He’s not going to get much stronger, as he’s already overcapped on strength, but the real character development is to deal with war traumas, and see his genin team grow. Maybe in the future he’ll chase some kind of romantic relationship with another jonin, or even die to push his team to better themselves.

For Suzuhime, my only wish moving forward is that she could stop being… what she thinks people want her to be, and starting being everything she can be. I can’t deny she’s good at what she does — when she finds her footing, at least. Like all of my team, I’m proud of how far she’s came as a shinobi in the short time we’ve worked together. But… like the rest of my team, I can’t help but feel overprotective of her.

But I know I have to be unbiased when I write this report, and the truth is Suzuhime is more than talented enough for the exams. She’s uniquely talented in her clan’s specialty, the Mind Body Switch technique — and in fact seems like she’s genuinely happier when she’s in someone else’s body. If I had to guess, it’s because her family expects too much from her, but what do I know? I don’t exactly come from a rich family from the Land of Tea.

It’s easy enough to cheer her up, motivate her, or reinforce good behavior with some mochi ice cream. All in all, I can’t complain. By my reckoning, Suzuhime is

Usagi Haruna

Usagi is interested in being a medical ninja, which if you ask me is a weird career path, but hey. Some people like helping others rather than pounding their face in. She’s learning well, and progressing nicely — she’s a little bit over the top at times, maybe a bit irritable. There’s a lot of untapped potential inside of her, and my hope is that she can figure out how to tap into all of it.

I’ve done my best to motivate her with katsu curry and tonkotsu ramen. It works well enough!

She’s loyal, smart, and a hard worker. With any luck, she’ll find her footing and be a valuable member of the Konoha shinobi. I believe in her ability, and I fully believe she is

Mochi Kurumi

Kurimi is a lazy and messy person who takes way too much food to eat and tends to just… not eat it. She says it’s because of her clans hypermetabolism… But I don’t care. As a person who quite likes food... It’s a disgrace, and despite my best attempts, she’s just… so wasteful.

Nevertheless, she is quite effective. Especially with the sword she wields. As her teacher, there isn’t much more that I can teach her. She’s more or less the unofficial team leader — and definitely the team mom. This is because, despite her faults, she cares deeply about her teammates, and tries to nurture and care for them as best she can… It’s inspiring, really. Her constant caring for her teammates has earned her a few snacks from me — she likes dumplings.

She has a unique kekkei genkai — one I can only teach her the basics about — but she’s finding her way on her own.

It is not uncommon for those who come from money, to come from class. For Kaiju, one of those things is true, but not the other. Kaiju comes from the Ashikaga clan, one of the richest, longest standing clans in Konoha. The Ashikaga clan made their money in a certain kind of way.

Possessing the unique Wood Release kekkei genkai, the Ashikaga has been a member of Konoha since the founding of the village. Strangely, though, they were virtually pacifistic and have maintained that lifestyle for most of their existence. Nonetheless, they are rather greedy, and used their kekkei genkai to create the family business: The Soaked Grove.

The Soaked Grove is a huge grove of trees created through the clan’s kekkei genkai, complete with a tea garden, hot springs, and… Konoha’s only brothel. Throughout the long lasting shinobi war, the Soaked Grove offered a discount to all the soldiers hard at work protecting them… normally, something like Wood Release would have been forcibly weaponized by its village, but Konoha saw so much tax revenue, and charitable donations from the Soaked Grove, that they made no attempt to force the Ashikaga out of their pacifism.

For generations now, the Ashikaga have been one of the most affluent and wealthy families in Konoha, boasting an even bigger grover, an even bigger collection of hot springs, and even more options for companionship… but now, two of the members of the youngest generation of the Ashikaga are committed to becoming shinobi and protecting and serving their village!

For… very different reasons.

Kaiju Ashikaga has spent all thirteen years of his life in absolute luxury, and was blessed with the ability to utilize Wood Release, Kai had a natural talent for ninjutsu, and proved to be a quick learner in taijutsu and genjutsu. He was gonna complete his goal!

The goal in question?

Quite simple. Having grown up spending his whole life watching the Leaf shinobi come, kiss the extremely pretty girls, and then leave after visiting his mother at the receptionist’s desk. Kai was convinced that if he became a Leaf shinobi, the girls would fall into his lap!

So far, as a genin, it hasn’t worked yet. But! Kai has no fear, he’s gonna keep at it, and be a lady killer one day. One day.

Kai’s endgame is being the one, the only, the legendary Wood Release master Toad Sage of Mount Myōboku, Kaiju the Magnificent! Basically, Kai is a pervy guy who’s gonna eventually be good with the ladies, maybe, and he thinks the only way to do so is to become a killer ninja! Maybe he’ll learn otherwise, maybe he won’t. Who knows?

Basically, I plan to have Kaiju become a Toad Sage (taking applications for toad sage mentors), and a Wood Release dude, who keeps his pervy personality (think Master Roshi kinda), and never really grows up.

• Ninjutsu Savant Whatever ‘it’ is, Kai just ‘gets it.’ Ninjutsu comes second nature to him, from doing it to understanding how it works, Kai is the resident ninjutsu user of his team. Maybe it helps that he has such a unique and powerful Kekkei Genkai, but this stuff has been coming to him naturally since he as a child.
• Easily Motivated While Kai is far from self motivated, he is easy enough to motivate. In fact, it only takes a few magic words from his sensei to get Kai to really apply himself. Without that, though? He’s not exactly lazy, he’s just focused on something… more important. Luckily, it doesn’t take much effort to give him the proper motivation.
• Creative Thinker Kai has spent the past few years perfecting the art of being a peeping tom — it’s lead to him being quite the out of the box thinker. Kaiju finds a way in most situations, and it’s part of why he’s so successful at his real joy in life.
• Good Sport Kai has spent the last three years of his life being casually bullied by his sister and sensei, both of whom don’t understand his passion for hot babes. This has led to Kai taking things like being called a pervert in stride! Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words may never hurt me! Speaking of…
• Thick Skull Kai has survived many a whack upside the dome from his sister and his sensei, Kai is a natural tank. He claims it’s his Wood Release covering his ass.

• Wood Release: Growing Tree Jutsu After performing the necessary hand seals, Kai is able to raise a small tree (really more of a branch), which he can then manipulate to grab a target. It’s his signature technique, as of now.

• Earth Release: Flying Thrown Stones After slamming his hands on the ground, Kai sends a multitude of rocks from the ground to fly at the target.
• Water Release: Water Whip Kai can create a whip of water that can be wrapped around the opponent. It also has various other applications.
• Wood Release: Smothering Binding Technique Kai is able to utilize nearby trees to extend their branches and grow them around a target, immobilizing. Valuable in battle and, Kai hopes, other applications. Eventually he suspects he’ll be able to do this more effectively! Right now, he’s still learning…

• Wood Release At its simplest level, Wood Release allows the user to create wood, essentially converting their chakra into a source of life. At its greatest, it can be used to create mighty trees of various size and shape, not unlike how the great Soaked Grove was created by Kaiju’s ancestors. Wooden constructs can also be created, from mansions to cages. Users of Wood Release also possess a Regeneration Ability, passively healing their injuries.

• In the art of Wood Release, Kai is mostly self-taught. None of his clanmates have used it quite as offensively, or even as defensively as he has. He’s figuring out as he goes, but he’s learning more every day. Honestly, to him, it’s a mystery why no one of his family has tried to be a ninja before.

The Fujiyoshi clan is known for their explosive displays of light and sound. While most Shinobi would be happy to have such a powerful bloodline limit on their side, Fujiyoshi Kohana is not most people. In fact, Hana is quite the opposite — she thinks both her clan’s kekkei genkai and even her natural affinity to fire release are destructive, and destruction is never beautiful.

“To promote friendship among allied nations and raise the bar in the art of shinobi.”

This is the stated purpose of the chūnin exams, and it has always been clear.

Participants in the exams are genin, or junior ninja, from the various shinobi villages. During the exams, all shinobi skills are put to the test, starting with a written exam and leading up to the finals — consisting of one on one combat between the contestants who made it through the other stages of the exams. These fights are watched by all the land’s daimyos, who use them as a gauging point for which shinobi village is the strongest.

The stronger the village, the more likely the daimyos are to come to them for work. The more daimyos come to the villages for work, the more the villages the prosper. The chūnin exams and the genin from each village are fighting for the future of their villages, not just their own pride.

In reality, the stated purpose of the chūnin exams could not be further from the truth. They aren’t a way to promote friendship among allied nations. The ninja villages use the chūnin exams as a miniature war between the nations, to prove their might to the daimyos of each nation. The chūnin exams are a battle of life and death, because the strength of a nation is derived from the strength of its village, and the strength of a village is derived from the strength of a shinobi, and a shinobi’s greatest strength only emerges in the midst of a life-or-death battle.

Of course, this year’s chūnin exams are exceptionally important… there are rumblings of an organization of rogue shinobi being formed, and whichever nation looks the strongest at the chūnin exams, is sure to get the most work if there really is a ninja war on the horizon.
