It didn’t pay well, the kids were little shitheads, and the cabins were cold. And yet, Nick kept coming back.

He only went the first time because of memories talking about it with his father, and he wanted to try it out. After that? He managed to convince his best friend to tag along with him, and Nick was all in on Second Horizons. For five of the six years he’d attended, Nick had been the blue counselor, but this time? He was trying something different. Nick had decided to request the Pink Cabin — sure, it wasn’t his normal vibe, but he’d had a feeling when he was writing his sheet that it was time for a change. Maybe he’d like it there. ‘course, he figured that Andi kid was coming again, and they were a little extra from time to time.

He’d been in this same spot for five years now, listening to the camp director give his little spiel before he walked away to his office and the counselors were sent out of the Lodge and off to the North Pole to greet the kids who had shown up. A couple of the counselors were already gone and waiting at the airport for the fly-ins, but Nick managed to weasel out of that job once again. To him? Listening to the Director ramble on for a few minutes in a pre-camp hype speech was better in every way than sitting in a bus with entitled campers whose parents spent too much to get rid of their kids for the winter. Not that Nick knew anything about bad parents.

“Nicky boy, what’s the number one rule of Second Horizons?”

Nick was brought back to reality by the Director speaking directly to him, and he cleared his throat. “Uh, you know I don’t like being called that, right? Because I’ve been pretty clear about it for six years… okay, okay, whatever.” When the Director rolled his eyes,. Nick decided to brush it off, a gentle reminder that older people didn’t really care how he felt or what he wanted to be called. Okay, whatever. “The first rule is not to bother you unless there’s a life or death emergency BECAUSE,” Nick spoke up, prepared to give the rest of the answer before the Director even had a chance to interrupt him, “Second Horizons is your paid vacation home.”

“That’s correct.”

Of course it was correct. Nick had to wonder if it was just for show, or if the Director really thought Nick didn’t remember these conversations. It was the same thing, every goddamn time. Nick knew what was coming next, it was going to be the ‘second rule of Second Horizons. Why even wait? Nick should have given him the answer without even waiting.

“And, Nicky boy, what’s the second and final rule of Second Horizons?”

“Ain’t gonna be no fuckin’. Right? Satisfied?” Nick answered, rolling his eyes. No matter how many times the Director said it, that rule was almost always broken. Hell, Nick himself had a tendency to break it, but it wasn’t his own fault. He didn’t get it, but damn near everyone who applied to Second Horizons tended to be pretty hot. And what was he gonna do? Not flirt? That wasn’t really an option here. “Permission to be dismissed, Captain?” He asked, and the Director shook his head.

“Look, you guys just don’t cause problems for me and I won’t bother you. I hired you because your resume leads me to believe you’d make a pretty good professional babysitter. Those kids in your cabins are collectively your problem. Not mine. If they become my problem, then we’re gonna have a problem. And I want a very problem free winter holiday.”

That was understandable. Who didn’t want a problem free holiday season? Hell, Mike was spending Christmas here, and Mike had a family. Nick had… well, there was that gremlin kid, and Nick was pretty sure her family would let him hang out at her house if he didn’t feel like intruding on the Carters, but all in all… Nick liked it here. This was his family — for the season, anyway. As ragtag as the counselors were, Nick liked more than a few of the longtime campers. A lot of the time, their families didn’t want them for the holiday. Nick definitely understood that on a personal level.

“That being said, I hope you enjoy your time here as well. We got a good thing going here, and I’d love to keep it that way. Just remember, I’m watching you. Always watching you. Like…”

“Roz from Monsters, Inc?” Nick suggested, but he was ignored. Why was his best material always ignored?

“Like Santa Claus. I know when you’ve been naughty and I know when you’ve been nice, so you better be good for goodness’s sake. Or however that stupid song goes. Now go stand by the Christmas tree so you can meet your kids. Merry Christmas.”

Nick shook his head, but as the Director dismissed them, he was happy to be out of the Lodge. Weirdly enough, Nick didn’t really like it in the Lodge — too comfortable, it took away from the idea that Second Horizons was a ‘camp.’ There were already too many resort-esque features for Nick, like the pool room and the sauna. But, to his credit, the Director spared no expense. As he stepped into the brisk, cold air of a Washington morning, Nick pulled out his phone and typed out a text message to his co-counselor:

To: Kim Benson (counselor)
Boss freaking out, where are you w/ kids??

5 mins.

Wait, are you texting while driving? Don’t do that.

Nick shook his head and dropped his phone back into his pocket as he wondered if he’d drawn the short stick, as far as cabin counselors went. Maybe he should have stayed in blue… No, wait. He needed positive thoughts, right? Positive thoughts. Plus, there were a ton of campers he had to meet at the Christmas tree. Then, they had the big group bonfire, then the smaller bonfires by the cabins… why did they have two bonfires? Nick didn’t know the answer to that either.

I’m allergic to this camp’s bullshit. I’m kind of used to it though. Is this Stockholm Syndrome? I’m trying to get myself excited.

The sauna when the girls are in it. Also, since I’m trying to be positive nowadays… I actually don’t mind the campfire get togethers.

This year I’m gonna try to change. Honestly, I graduate this year, so if I come back it’ll have to be as a counselor, and hey, let’s say I’m getting a little comfortable showing my face around here every year. I usually go in with a bad attitude, and I don’t think Coach would really like that. So you know what? I wanna do my best to make my last winter as a camper here a good one.

I used to be like that. I used to be a bad guy, and I’m not even trying to pretend like I wasn’t. I hurt people, I did bad things. But not anymore. Now I channel my aggression and I’m trying to make something out of it. I have healthy outlets, I have friends back home, hell I even had a girlfriend _{okay, that only lasted like a month}, but still! I’m on the come up.

I want to do something right, I want to give Second Horizons a real chance. I don’t wanna be the kid that gets in trouble for organizing strip poker — or at least just that kid. I wanna play ice hockey and go on hikes, and just give the camp a real shot. Second Horizons has always tried pretty hard for me, so now it’s my turn.

• Dressed like he just rolled out of the bed, but like every day. Is it a look? Is it a style choice? Is he just lazy? Ask him.

• Nose appears slightly bent out of shape. The lad did his best to set it back into place, but sometimes you aren’t lucky.

• Lockpicking set. He keeps telling them he’s going to break into the lodge and steal booze and get drunk. He keeps doing it, they keep not stopping him.
• Playing cards. He likes to gamble and organize pick up games with his fellow campers. Sometimes with no shame, get it?
• DS lite. Everybody needs a hobby, his hobby is Tetris.
• All Star Superman. Light reading for the plane.

► Quirks:

• Likes to fiddle with things. This can lead to him snapping his fingers, or clicking a fidget cube. It’s a real problem.
• Has trouble sleeping. He used to deal with this by taking pills, but they made him feel ill. Now he just sort of deals with it.

► Likes/Dislikes:

✔ Exercise and fitness. “And now I don’t mean ‘fitness whole pizza in my mouth.’ That shit is so cringe. I like to work out and stay on top of my game.”
✔ BJJ. “BJJ is the style I chose, and I’m sticking with it. I’m getting pretty good — sure I get my ass beat sometimes, but it’s fair to say I beat ass sometimes too. Wait a second, that doesn’t sound right…”
✔ Fighting games. “I used to think video games were fucking stupid before some nerd at school turned me on to these. He did my homework, and he taught me how to play. I got a long way to go but the games are fun, and the community is great.”

► Brief history:

Rich’s father raised him alone. A hot shot lawyer in Miami, Florida, Rich’s dad never really had time for his young son. Rich never processed this very well growing up, and he was something of a bully when he was younger. He would get into fights, he would make fun of kids… he was a problem child, through and through. As he got older, he got more adventurous. Sneaking out, parties, underage drinking… the works. Despite therapist after therapist — one of which suggested he attend Second Horizons, something Rich hated both during the summer and the winter — Rich never seemed to calm down. It wasn’t until just over a year ago that someone finally got through to Richard: a trainer at a small combat club.

Rich showed up, and got his ass handed to him by a kid half his size and wanted to sign up immediately. A deal was reached between himself and the coach: if Richard wanted to work with him, then he was going to have to try and atone for his past mistakes. For the most part? This amounted to Rich handwriting letters to classmates he’d bullied and doing whatever they deemed necessary to get them to accept his apology. It was hard work, but the effort paid off and he’s been training under the instructor for a while now — even managing to skip the Second Horizons summer camp to spend his days working out and practicing. He’s getting pretty good now, and mentally he’s never been in a better place.

It was the coach’s suggestion that he try to go into Second Horizons with a positive mindset this one time, since it’s almost certainly going to be the last chance he has to do that as a camper, and if he ever wants to be a counselor? Then he has to make sure he doesn’t do anything… too bad at the camp this year.

This year, Rich is a changed man: he’s still got his playing cards, and he’s still got his lockpick set, but more importantly he’s got a once broken nose, and two fake teeth. His mindset couldn’t be better, and he’s hoping to bring that energy to the camp.

I read the blurbs, and I think I’d like green pink GREEN. Sorry, Andi changed my answer… I think the green people would like flowers too! Pink seems, ah, a little too sassy for me to get along with them...

Yes! It was Andi’s suggestion, he’s been going for a few years and think I’d enjoy it. Since he moved in, my parents agree. I don’t need many accommodations, thank you.

Nope! There’s cell service, right? Okaa-san will probably want me to call...

► Do you have experience with any winter sports? Would you like lessons?

I don’t! I’d love to learn to ice skate, or go sledding! Can we build sled tracks? I think that’d be super fun. Sorta like a winter wonderland.

► What are you looking forward to?

Finding flowers that are blooming still despite it being winter. That’d be neat. Maybe someone can teach me? Trying weed. Andi says there’s tons of stoners here so I can probably get high for the first time. Ignore the splotches, Andi said to take that out.

Not a huge fan of being cold! Gonna be real. Plus it’s probably dry. I’ll need to remember chapstick!

What, seriously? This is kinda cringe. Just looked over Andi’s shoulders, how did he write so much about himself? I don’t even know what to put — let me see…

I like Disney movies! I’ve been to Disneyland three times, I think I would have went more but it costs a bunch of money for us since we gotta include flying across the ocean and all. I’m respectful enough to my elders, but I don’t like to let anyone push me around — that includes my grandparents. I think my grandparents expected something different, based on how they’ve treated me, but eh… that’s okay. I’m not saying I’m the ‘black sheep’ of my family, but I am saying my grandma isn’t a huge fan of the things I like and do. Fortunately, the feeling is mutual.

I’m a ‘free spirit,’ which I know is like, the STUPIDEST thing to say, and so like, generic Tinder profile-y of me, but it’s kinda true. I like to wander around and explore the local (and sometimes not so local) wildlife! Sometimes, I also like to go to the beach and check out the marine life, but I’m not really interested in being a marine biologist. I was, and then I read about how much school that takes. Ya girl wants to be a botanist. Being lowkey? I have high standards.

Basically, I don’t like to be pushed around. I like plants. I like sea life. I like to relax. I’ve never seen snow. Let’s go.

► Brief history:

There are three chief moments in Mickey’s early life that really matter: the first was when she saw Toy Story. She was a young kid then, but she loved the film nonetheless. In fact, she loved it so much her parents saw it forty five more times — to the point that both of them swear up and down they can recite the entire script from beginning to end. Sometime after the Toy Story phase, when Mickey started to slide into a more comfortable rhythm of watching the Disney channel and wandering around in the barren backyard, her grandparents moved in. This led to a few changes in her life, but most importantly: Mickey’s babysitter was no longer the television screen. Instead, she spent time with her grandmother cultivating a beautiful garden and koi pond in their backyard. Of course, most of this consisted of her grandma yelling in Japanese and pointing while an eight year old Mickey tried her best to keep up, but the end result was the same.

Mickey cared for the flowers. She felt like she’d raised both the plants and the koi fish, and it led to her growing fascinated with them. Over time, Mickey got a little tired of her grandmother yelling at her and telling her what to do, and took matters into her own hands. Around the time she was ten years old, the garden became less of her and her grandma’s ‘project,’ and more Mickey’s ‘escape.’ The garden is where Mickey can be most often found. This would be the second important moment, and shortly after that, the third one happened.

While Mickey was patiently waiting in the car for her mother to return with KFC (according to Mickey’s grandparents, the KFC here sucked, but she wouldn’t have a chance to try it in Japan until much later), she fiddled with the radio, and eventually found her way to a station that had an intriguing song playing on it: Bring Da Ruckus. When her mother returned, she quickly turned the radio down, scolding Mickey for listening to such violent, explicit music… but the damage was already done. Mickey’s mind was made up, she had found her new calling in life.

Mickey acquired an iPod by begging her father, and the rest is history — Mickey used her investigative skills to find more music like it, and before long her iPod was loaded with all kinds of gangsta rap. It’s the thing she loves second most in life — and Mickey is a bit of an audiophile. Her headphones are expensive, and EQ’d just right, and every track she listens to is FLAC and high bitrate. She won’t settle for less.

A few years back, Mickey spoke with her parents and told them her friend from school, Andi, would be coming over for a sleepover. Andi didn’t leave, and Mickey explained that ‘sleepover’ really meant ‘adopt,’ and Mickey’s parents are slowly going through the process of legally adopting her friend, to make sure he’s kept safe from a family that doesn’t seem to really want him.

Yes, and I’m going to be a counselor again. As for accomodations, how about you guys get a new fucking stove, huh? That too much to ask? I’ve seen the prices you charge for admission you bastards. I wanna make a goddamn pizza without worrying about setting the cabin on fire.

Or a flat screen for the rec room, but I already know that’s too much to ask.

Yes, I can ice skate. I give lessons, but I don’t need lessons.

Ice skating, camp fires, s’mores (are s’mores a winter thing?), and hot cocoa by the fireplace.

Burning my fucking food because the oven here is trash. And if anybody blasts Mikey with a rock filled snowball I’m throwing hands.

Does anyone really like doing these? Like, that would make you narcissistic, right? Uhm, let me think.

Alright, I’m just gonna do my best here. I like to think I’m a romantic, right? That means I go out on a bunch of different dates with a bunch of different people — which is a great use of my time, because if I didn’t do that I’d probably just spend most of my time hanging out with Mikey and smoking reefer and watching shonen anime. Which isn’t bad, but I need more than that! I’m super extroverted, so I like talking to people, and I like to think I’m pretty empathetic, BUT I’ll be real, people say I’m pretty lazy. Is that true? I don’t think so. I’m one of those ‘work smarter, not harder’ guys. I should have been in the Air Force — Dad used to say I would have done well there.

Geeze, I already wrote more than I usually do. You’re welcome. What else? I have a pretty bad habit of starting and stopping creative projects… like, music and stuff. I guess there’s a reason all the songs on my soundcloud are pretty short, huh? Mikey says I have a bad habit of being, uh, inconsistent, but I disagree. Between you and me? I’d say we’re both pretty charismatic, but he definitely takes the cake.

► Brief history:

Nick was born in Korea, on an American Air Base to an American father — an Air Force Officer. Nick grew up on the airbase and around Seoul. Growing up there, Nick learned Korean at the same time as he learned English. His parents divorced when he was fifteen, and Nick stayed in Korea with his father until he was seventeen, when he moved to stay with his mother in Las Vegas. There, Nick finished high school and then at eighteen he moved out of his mother’s house, and found his way to a job at a nightclub. He found a place to stay and made friends with a Las Vegas native, who he managed to coerce into attending EVO with him — there, Nick met Mike Carter and they became friends quickly. So quickly in fact, that following EVO weekend, Nick was moving back to LA with him.

Living in LA, Nick spends his days smoking weed, selling weed, watching anime, and playing video games. He loves it here, and only ever really left to attend Second Horizons, which he has done like clockwork every summer and winter since arriving in the states. It was something his dad used to tell him about, and despite how much Nick will claim he hates his father, he finds it hard to distance himself from memories of when things were happier.

why do i have to do this? was this always on the sheet? my mommy did most of it for me before, i won’t lie. does that make me a mama’s boy? maybe, but people who call other people mama’s boys are just jealous their mom don’t love them that much. anyway, about me, uh… i’m bad at this! geeze man, don’t you guys already know me? one sec.

okay i looked at jay’s and he just wrote some words so i’m gonna do that. there are some of my favorite words:

► Brief history:

Born and raised in Colorado, Christopher Robin was born on a ski resort during the peak of the season — a special circumstance that cost his parents a pretty penny.. Christopher Robin thinks this is the reason he loves the snow and snowboarding so much, but the reality is his parents were probably as big of an influence over him, if not bigger. Christopher Robin (more commonly known as CR) was born to a pair of snowboarding fanatics, who had lucked out and won the lottery. They spent their time traveling the world and seeking out more places to board, until CR’s mother became pregnant. At that point, they settled down in Colorado, near the ski resort they’d met at years ago. Later, CR would be born at this same resort, and four years after that, he would complete his first circuit of the bunny slope.

CR’s childhood was spent on the slopes of the resort, and once he got good enough, he spent winters hiking around the mountains local to his hometown of Westworth, Colorado and building his own trails and lines. He started snowboarding around town too, trying to wake up early enough to beat the snowplows. Sometime around the age of thirteen, he started smoking weed — snowboarding does that. He thinks he hides it from his parents, but he doesn’t. Embarrassingly, being a stoner is a huge part of his personality.

Christopher Robin attends Second Horizons during both the summer and winter seasons. During the summer, it gives him something to do; without it, he’s almost lost. During the winter, he’s shown up at Second Horizons the past few years becuase he likes the idea of ripping up new, fresh territory. Once he’s boarded everything he can think of here? He’ll move on — but for now, there’s still lines to be found, and until he finds them, CR isn’t going to stop.

Recklessly determined, Christopher Robin drags his best friend around the mountains from the asscrack of dawn right up until curfew — even spending some time snowboarding via the stars (and a few well placed spotlights).

Hi, I'm stepping in to answer this question because @LovelyComplex is busy with work stuff herself. :)

I think we have a few sets of sibling characters, and we're not sure we want to overrun on any particular tropes, so I'm gonna have to say to ice that idea for now. That being said, you should be able to make two characters if you like. Just not siblings at this time :)

Located in northern Washington state, Second Horizons has been family run for many years. The camp is one of the most popular ones in the country, offering both winter and summer camps for campers who want to make new friends. The camp is popular for the variety of activities it offers during both seasons, and the unique color coded system it has for its cabins.

Camp cabins are separated by colors, which are said to represent the personalities of the campers that stay inside of them. To determine which cabin you stay in, campers are expected to fill out a personality test of sorts and attach it to their camp applications. In later years, the camp has allowed campers to include a ‘preference’ for their cabin. Whether or not this is acknowledged by camp officials is unknown.

• Red: Red is the color associated with excitement and energy. A typical red camper is passionate, bold, and oftentimes short tempered and hot headed. Red campers are very much allowed to ‘do what they want,’ because no one has the energy to tell them otherwise. Red campers are thrill seekers, adventurers, and tend to bite off more than they can chew.

• Blue: Blue is the color of stability, and peacefulness. A typical blue camper is loyal, dependable, and strong willed. They don’t like to lose, and usually bring the most effort to camp activities. If a blue camper is going to try something, they’re going to do it right, and better than you. Blue campers are a bit ambitious, and more than a little haughty — they know they’re the best.

• Green: Green is the color of tranquility. A typical green camper attends camp not for the social aspect, but for the vibes. Relaxed and chill, a typical green camper has no time for drama or nonsense, and would sooner be found making snow angels or building a snowman than messing around with indoor activities. Unfortunately, green campers are oftentimes too chill, and it leads to them being misconstrued as ‘apathetic.’

• Pink: Pink is the color of playfulness, love, and… immaturity. A typical pink camper enjoys teasing their fellow campers. They love to have fun, in their own whimsical ways. Pink campers are also usually creative in their own ways. Unfortunately, pink campers are sometimes childish. They can be demanding and often want to make sure they get their way, by any means necessary.

Each camp cabin is co-ed, and campers ages range from 16 - 18. Each cabin has two counselors, and campers are encouraged to take their problems to their counselor. Counselors are equipped and trusted to deal with just about any situation. Counselors are typically in their early to mid twenties, and are usually veterans of the retreat.

Second Horizons retreat offers tons of winter time activities, including snowboarding through beautiful trails on the campus, rocketing through open fields on snowmobiles, ice skating on the beautiful frozen lake, an indoor heated swimming pool, and a camp wide cabin vs cabin snowball fight. These are, of course, just the publicly offered activities. There are, of course, other ones — including a hidden, secret, and most importantly unsupervised hot spring. Campers often sneak there, where they get up to no good.

The winter retreat takes place during December, and it does include Christmas for those who’d like to celebrate away from their families.
