The German shepherd happily splashed in the water near the beach, rolling around in the water in an attempt to simulate swimming without actually having to enter the scary sea. The dog ran back to his master, and then back to the sea in a strange zig-zag pattern when viewed from above. The man was walking his dog at the beach, far away from the Naukan settlement, together with another colonist. It may have been too far, considering the fact that the dangers of the island they were on as well as the New World as a whole were not well understood, but many of the Crusade’s citizens that had been dropped off on the island to build the supply port that the main fleet desperately needed did not waste the chance to explore the beautiful island. It was almost a true paradise, with pristine blue seas and shores that were not tainted by the foul pollution that had devastated the original birthplace of the humans that had settled on the island. The two men looked around. It had not gone unnoticed by them and the Naukan scientists that both the flora and fauna were larger on this island than they were at home, possibly due to the phenomenon of island gigantism where animals that settled somewhere would evolve to be bigger.

The dog stopped. It started barking, at something a few hundred meters away that looked like rocks. The two men stood still, neither of them had any weapons. Slowly, almost unseen by the two men, but not by the dog who could both hear and smell the creature, the rocks moved and revealed a massive red crab, several meters in size, a lot larger than its counterpart on Earth. The crab started scuttling towards them slowly, soon picking up a frantic pace. The men and dog started running away, but the crab was faster, and before they knew it the crab had caught up with them, and used its giant claw to pick up one of the men and nearly cut him in half, killing him instantly, before retreating back to its nest where it came from. The other man continued running as fast as he could, with his dog in tow. As soon as he reached the settlement he ran towards the building that had been constructed where the colony’s leader managed the settlement, and told everything about the crabs to her. Soon, the order was given to all colonists to not go away too far from the colony until these Titan Crabs, as they came to be known by the settlers, could be exterminated.

Udo sighed when he saw what he was assigned to. He had been ordered to escort a group of scientists into the rainforest together with a few other soldiers. He didn’t really like it, but orders were orders. He’d much rather hunt the Carcinus Titania that had been plaguing the beaches around the port colony, especially since they were delicious when cooked, but he had been assigned to something else. There wasn’t much to do except protecting the workers and other colonists from the native wildlife or hunting animals anyway. He walked to the small barracks near the port. It was only a small building because the local Naukan colony didn’t have that much soldiers in it, as most of the Crusade’s military was still on the Vanguard. He gathered his equipment and weaponry and walked towards the only recon vehicle that they had. He entered and sat in the passenger seat and soon some of his comrades also entered the vehicle, including the driver. Other soldiers entered the jeeps that were standing next to the barracks instead, and soon a small convoy drove towards the meeting point from where they would escort the scientists deeper into the island. The convoy continued as soon as the vehicles containing the scientists had joined them, and they drove from the beach towards the jungle. It took some time, because much of the tropical forest had been cut down already, to make space for homes, farms and other buildings. A byproduct of this was the wood which would be used to build the buildings. When they were at the edge of the rainforest the men and women got out off the vehicles and walked into the forest.

Angela Szarka, wildlife biologist of the Naukan Crusade Scientific Division, was having a field day. She really enjoyed the field research part of her job, where she observed animals and plants in their natural habitat and this was even better, as she could see completely new species and forms of life that were very different from the animals on Earth. She could probably write several different scientific papers about them, but this was neither the time or the place to do so, as she had to determine if all of the different animals and plants would be dangerous or helpful to the survival of the growing colony and its inhabitants. She shivered when she thought about one of the less friendly denizens of the island, the Titan Crab, scientifically named Carcinus Titania. It had first been discovered when several Naukan colonists had decided to explore some of the beaches of the island, thinking they would be safe from the dangers of the rainforest. They were wrong, as several of them were killed and dragged off. When a small military force later came to investigate, they killed several of the beasts and found human, amongst animal bones, in their lair. These crabs possessed a limited intelligence, able to hide behind rocks to wait for the right moment to strike, and were very territorial creatures. Soon after their discovery, autopsies and scientific studies had been done on them, which determined the only helpful way that these Titan Crabs would be helpful was as a food source, and so hunters and soldiers were given the orders to hunt for them. Luckily for the colony’s citizens, the Carcinus Titania were not able to best the rifles and machineguns of the soldiers, and the meat was a good source of protein.

After several minutes of walking, the group of soldiers and researchers came across a clearing in the rainforest, where they found a herd of herbivores resembling giant rhinos peacefully grazing. The scientists took samples of them, and determined that these giant rhinos could be useful as beasts of burden, strong enough to carry and drag things which could be helpful in logging and construction. Due to their size these animals were very hard to move, until Angela suggested that they tried luring the rhinos with some of the native plants that had been discovered earlier. This particular plant was the Oryza purpura, a plant that looked like purple rice and several test fields on farms had been made for them. After some research it was found that these plants were not toxic and were edible, but they would probably never replace the grain crops that the colonists had brought with them due to their size and difficulty of processing. The giant rhinos were able to eat the purple rice unprocessed though, and some of them were lured back to the colony to be domesticated or trained. The explorers also brought back with them seeds of a potato-like plant that was determined to be safe for consumption, as well as the corpse of a carnivore that was able to camouflage itself from the people in the forest because it had leaves on its wings. It was only found when some of the scientists tried to use thermal imaging equipment and found out there was a large bird-shaped blob of higher temperatures against the background lower temperatures of the leaves. They immediately asked a soldier to shoot it a few times with his assault rifle, and soon the animal was dead on the ground. Overall, Angela thought, it was a very successful trip.

Walter looked over the colony from one of the watchtowers that had been build near its edges. He could see the farmhouses made out of wood next to the fields full of wheat, corn, etc. After the Naukan fleet had landed on the island to build a supply port, a portion of the seeds in the seed-bank were left there to grow into crops to provide food for the colonists. Also, some of the animals that were on the Ark had been left on the island, to provide a source of protein that they would know would be safe for consumption. The animals also provided manure which would fertilize the farms and fulfilled some key roles like pollination. The farms were in a spot where there originally was only jungle, but the giant trees had to be cleared to make space for agriculture. These giant trees that were taller than many on earth also provided a very good source for wood that would be used to construct many of the buildings Walter could see from the watchtower, and the leaves and bark of these trees, together with many of the waste products of the sawmill had been used to make even more biofuel which would be used for the generation of electricity. They had recently constructed a barracks for the military, a makeshift hospital, and a school. The only buildings that weren’t really made out of wood were the large naval port that the Naukan fleet would use to resupply when they would eventually make their way back to the Gate to go pick up more people, as well as several factories that were built to provide the materials for this supply port and budding settlement, most notably of which was a large steel mill that had been built after sources of coal and iron had been found in the mountains that were located more to the inside of the island. There were also a concrete factory and resource refinery much like the one aboard the main Naukan flagship, as well as several other factories responsible for the production of building materials and other goods.

After several days of sailing, the Naukan Crusade fleet had finally arrived where they were planning to build the main settlement of the Naukan Crusade, and Temir Zima gave the order to land there. They had chosen a location to the northwest of their island colony, protected from invaders by the mountains to the east. The climate was a lot more temperate there, so it was more comfortable for many of the Naukan settlers. The same pattern that happened when the island colony first started was repeated here. The location was made safe, a port was built, local resources were exploited, and farms, factories and housing were all constructed with several major differences: The population of the main settlement numbered in several thousands compared to the several hundred people that lived in Azure Port, so the work happened quicker. The Vanguard was gone more often as it had to check back on Azure Port every now and then since radio communications were not set up yet. The flagship became a more permanent addition to the settlement, as it was intended to be. The nuclear reactor that had been sitting in the Flagship’s cargo hold was finally used to build a powerplant. The Ark was sitting around mostly empty until the Naukan citizens could gather enough materials to build another ship that was capable of protecting the new settlements, which would still take a long time. The main settlement of the Naukan Crusade was named Temir’s Landing.

It had been a full week on the sea after the Naukan Crusade had arrived into the new world through the gate. Preliminary scouting efforts using the detection equipment the Naukan ships had on hand, as well as the three helicopters onboard the Vanguard, the recon and defense ship of the Naukan Crusade's fleet, had revealed that there was a massive continent to the south-west of the gate, and as such the leader of the Naukan Crusade, Khan Temir Zima, had ordered the fleet to go to the south west. Due to currents, weather conditions, and encounters with several different denizens of the oceans of the New World, the fleet had ended up near the northern part of the archipelago that was between the northern and southern parts of the continent. After passing several islands, the fleet found an island that was good enough to settle on, and so, Temir gave the order to build a supply port here before the Naukan Crusade would settle on the mainland.

The soldiers of the assigned away team gathered in the landing craft, and a few minutes later it departed the Vanguard's well dock. They were nervous. It would be the first time any of them had set foot on land for a while, and who knew what kinds of dangers were on the island. Udo sat in the back, near the sergeant that was in command of the squad that was sitting in the landing craft. Another landing craft with one of the Crusade's recon vehicles was following closely behind. Udo could hear the chopping sound of helicopter rotors as the recon and transport helicopters flew over the landing craft and the ASW helicopter was dropping buoys to check for any dangers underwater. Then, they were upon the shore. The squad of men in the landing craft grabbed their weapons and carefully walked on the shore, checking for any threats. There seemed to be none, and a call from the sergeant with the recon helicopter confirmed this. As soon as a beachhead was established and the island was declared safe, the other ships came ashore. First to arrive was the Pioneer. A massive ramp at the front of the vessel was laid down upon the beach, and the ship was anchored to the beach. The Ark came and offloaded some of the people who were assigned to help construct the small waystation port that'd be used as a jumping-off point for further Naukan settlement. The Neptune went off to gather fish and make biofuel to refuel the ships.

Farms were established near the shore as the materials that were required to build a naval port were gathered using trucks and equipment that the Crusade had brought with them. The Neptune came back with a full tank of biofuel, and the scientific database was consulted to construct an additional biorefinery, together with a small powerplant, on the island.

After a week, the small Naukan settlement, named Azure Port, named after the beautiful blue seas that surrounded what would be called a tropical paradise. It had a few houses, biofuel refinery, farms, power plant, and most importantly, a large naval port. Some of the Naukan citizens were left behind, to work the land and service the Naukan ships that would pass through the area. Some soldiers, together with a few of the recon vehicles, were left behind, to protect the settlement. The Naukan Crusade fleet was ressuplied with materials gathered from the island, and set off north to their original destination.
When the mercenary had arrived at the alley, the garage door of Slingshot's home was wide open, and Jord could see him sitting at metal table with his leg covered in blood. Must've been shot he thought, probably police, we cleared out the gunmen in the bar earlier and I didn't see him being injured then. Jord rarely got injured from gunfire because of his power armour, and if it happened it never did any realy damage due to thick skin, muscle and bone tissue around his vital organs. Jord then often proceeded to dig the bullets out personally using his sword, refusing any medical attention and waited until his wounds healed, mostly unaffected by the pain and injuries due to his superhuman biology.

Jord walked into the garage, taking off his helmet and attaching it near his hip, where there was a special magnetic point for just that action. Slingshot walked over to the van that was standing in the garage. The mercenary could see it had been modified extensively to serve as what must be a mobile communications center. The vigilante told Jord to put some stuff in the back while he was going to get some stuff that they'd need to go to the 'hotel'. What hotel he was referring to was something Jord did not know. He didn't really appreciate being reduced to Slingshot's personal lackey, but there wasn't really anything else to do either, so he set himself to the task with vigor. In several minutes, the bike and gun cases had been carefully placed in the back of the van, and Jord was standing around waiting for Slingshot to come back. After several minutes of waiting, he felt the strange feeling again that he noticed at the bar again. As if someone was telling him to, he quickly grabbed his helmet and put it on, and what he saw surprised him greatly. Normally, the clear screen inside this helmet showed his vitals as well as some other pieces of information that he couldn't quite understand because they were written in a strange language Jord could not understand, but now all he could see was a map of his body, and the language of the text was changed to his native language, German. He studied it carefully, trying to take in all the details. He could see several of his organs, as well as some strange ones that he never knew about, and maybe didn't even exist in a normal human body, but were in his for some strange reason. Jord was so focused on trying to solve the mystery that he did not see Slingshot angrily arriving at the garage and driving away in the van. He only saw the van when it was outside of the garage and it was too late to stop it. He didn't really care though, he never really liked Slingshot anyway. Only then he realized that he didn't really have anywhere to go, as he did not know the location of the other people.

After Jord had arrived back at the bar he was once again confronted by the woman trying to heal him. This time however, she seemed very determined to do it, and he could see it was going to be very hard to get rid of the waitress this time. So he yielded. He grabbed the power armour glove of his right hand using his left, and clicked a switch located near the wrist. The ancient mechanisms inside the armour let loose and Jord took off the armored glove. Immediately, it was as if a part of his being was removed. Because he was neurally connected to the power armour by the implant that had, as he saw it, always been there for some mysterious reason, he could feel the parts of the armour and use them as if they were part of him. He grumbled a bit and then shrugged, and then shook the waitresses hand. Instantly, he could feel his wounds closing, including the wounds he had suffered but a few days ago when he had been hired to attack some organization's base of operations, and felt rejuvenated. He also noticed something new, but couldn't quite place wat it was. It seemed like his vision had gone sharper, or possibly his hearing or sense of smell. He decided to ignore this new stuff in favour of getting away as soon as possible.

It was clear at least to him, and possibly the others, that he was not going to fit in a car or on a motorcycle. So after giving the idea some thought, he decided he was going to stay in New York for now and see what the others were up to. That question was soon answered as the man named "Slingshot" adressed the group. He could go either to Boston, which was not an option for him at the moment, go help Alistar with interrogation, which the mercenary did not feel like doing, and meeting Slingshot at some street he didn't know. Out of all those options, he chose the latter, as it was the easiest thing to do for him. He took off his helmet and said to the others that were still present: "I will choose the third option." Jord started hearing the sirens of police approaching. He put his helmet back on and quickly went outside. He had prepared himself for a quick getaway by grabbing his armour and weaponry when he had been in his hotel earlier, but it looked like there was still some time left before he had to be at the assembly point at the alley. And thus he stepped through the Rum House's doorway only to be greeted by a mostly empty street, except for a cop car that was quickly driving towards the bar. Somehow, however, the car did not notice the 7-foot tall man clad in power armour that made him even taller , possibly distracted by something else, and Jord was able to slip away as far as that was possible for someone like him.

Sadly for him, however, he was not able to sneak back to the hotel he was staying at. As soon as he exited the street the Rum House was in, he saw a line of police cars barricading the road much like the street Slingshot was in. Jord was not in possesion of a motorcycle, and quickly activated his shield, holding it in front of him as it formed a rectangular force field. It was not too soon as the police immediately opened up fire on him. The bullets merely bounced off his shield and Jord continued walking unharmed. When he got close enough to the line of police cars, he grapped his sword from his back, holding it in his right hand as he walked. The low sun reflected off it, making it look like it was on fire, and the sight must've been impressive for anyone who was still around. He arrived at the line, and deactivated his shield. He ran forward and gripped his sword in two hands before thrusting it into the nearest police officer. The other cops were too shocked to move and Jord spun around to the next, using the energy from his spin to lop another cop's head straight off. They got the message, and tried to run away. Jord let them, and he ran to the nearest alley as the cops started shooting in his direction again. They were not quick enough and Jord used the opportunity to hide nearby as the police called in reinforcements to find him. He snuck to his hotel when he saw the street being clear of cops.

Jord did not have much time and as soon as he was in his hotel room he grabbed everything he needed, mostly consisting of ammunition for his BFG, as well as some spare clothes and other things he found useful. He usually travelled light and was quickly done packing up. Ten minutes later, he was at the alley to the left of West 57th.

Soon, the pillar of light coming from the gate had dissappeared. With it, however, apparently had the flagship of the entire fleet that had gathered earlier to depart Earth, the Hope, the flagship of the UNE. After this had happened, the fleet had been disbanded and the leader of the Naukan Crusade, Khan Temir Zima, had given the go-ahead for the Naukan Crusade ships to officially leave the main fleet to its fate and go away. Thus, the Naukan Crusade had set sail to the south-west, to find new lands they could colonize. Slowly, the massive ships of the Naukan Crusade accelerated to full speed, and the other ships on the horizon slowly became smaller as the fleet was moving away. It had not even been an hour of travel before the sounds started. Strange scraping and knocking was heard by several crewmembers in the lower decks of the Pioneer. At first, the captain of the ship wanted to accelerate, as the sounds were frightening the crew, but Temir had told him to anchor the ship instead, and had given the same order to all of the other ships. There had to be a logical reason behind the sounds, which was most likely the inhabitants of this strange new world, and there was no reason why they would not try to meet these new peoples. Soon, the four ships of the Naukan Crusade had stopped and anchored themselves. Several people went outside to see what was going on, and what they saw surprised them very much. There were strange creatures, half human, half sea creature, that emerged from the water. The fleet didn't pay much attention to them and continued on their way.

Although the general atmosphere of the people in the fleet was relatively optimistic, Walter's mood was less so. Due to the fact that he was known on the fleet a good repairman and engineer, as well as very strong, he had been sent to all of the different ships multiple times. He first had to repair one of the cooling units of the seedbank on the Ark that would otherwise have caused a cascading failure and broken the entire cooling system of the seed bank. He was about to take a break and relax with a coffee in one of the dining rooms of the Ark, the ship that he had to temporarily call his home, when he was called again, this time to help repair one of the reconaissance vehicles on the Vanguard. After that, he had been ordered to help fix some machinery at the Pioneer's factory. Even though it was not fully operational yet, it still had to be checked to make sure nothing was broken on the day that the fleet would finally make landfall.

Unlike Walter's day, Angela Szarka, researcher in the laboratory of the Naukan flagship, kept getting a better day. After the fleet had passed through the gate, a massive amount of data was gathered even though the fleet had been in the new world for mere minutes at that point. The scientists and researchers had just gone through processing all of the gathered data. So far, there didn't seem to be any major differences between the new world they were currently in and Earth, except for the fact that logically this world was far less polluted and on the brink of death.

Jord finished the rest of his drink. The alcohol slightly dulled the pain, although he was barely affected by it anyway. He looked at his arm and the rest of his body. Several bullets had been able to penetrate the improvised wooden shield he had made out of a table barely 10 minutes ago, and had lodges themselves into his arm and left part of his torso. They had not gone too deep however, being stopped by the thick layers of bone and muscle in Jord's body. He looked around. The waitress he got his beer from earlier was walking around, touching people, and it looked like they were getting healed immediately. He could also see that as she progressed she seemed to be getting both weaker and less alert, signifying that it apparently cost her energy to do so. Then, she arrived at him, and held out her hand from him to shake.

"I am not Richard Gere. That is not my name. You can call me Legion's Fist" Jord said in response to her. "Also, I would not do that if I were you. I've got so many wounds that you'd probably drop dead from fatigue, seeing that healing people costs a lot of energy for you. They're not exactly lethal so I'd rather get them treated later"

"Hold on, before we go, I have to get something," Jord said in response to the man bossing everyone around immediately. After saying that he immediately walked out of the bar, and ran to his hotel, careful not to bump into any cars and cause a traffic accident on the way. He walked through the door and took the elevator to the floor his room was at. As soon as he entered his hotel room, he immediately grabbed the roll of bandages nearby, and carefully bandaged his arm. He would have to get the bullets out sometime later, but he did not have the time at the moment. He looked around the room before finding what he needed. It seemed the cleaners had left his room untouched which was lucky for him, because of the weapons and gear stashed in it. He quickly put on his power armour, the ancient mechanisms starting to hum with life as they were turned on. The strange organic implant covering most of Jord's back burned small holes in his T-shirt as it connected with the power armour. Jord picked up his BFG and sword, and attached them to his back using the magnetic 'docking stations' that were specifically designed for that purpose. He tested his force shield a few times to make sure he was still able to control it with his thoughts, and it changed shape as he focused. Rather than going through the front door he opened the door to the balcony, where he jumped off and landed in a quiet park that was located behind the hotel.

Before they knew it, Jord was already back at the bar. "Alright, I'm ready now."
