I'm a weeaboo communist. Are you surprised?

EDIT: You probably are now, but I'm not going to tell you why you wouldn't have been like two years ago. You get to agonize over that yourself.

Usually I wouldn't think to complain, but given present company I'm willing to bet that most of everyone forgot or abandoned the RP because of short attention spans.

I've just been busier than expected. Can't speak for the others though.

If this is open can I base something around Alaska?

Yes, though you'll be pretty reliant on Canada to let you through and/or not invade on behalf of whoever.

@Keyguyperson And if it open, New Mexico and Arizona are still open, right?

Yes, anything not claimed in the Characters tab is open.
Slowly change the political ideologies of all those on the Spam Forum through memes, and convince them to follow you in an uprising.

You have the power to speak the language of one specific Dolphin pod off the coast of Brazil.
Is Canada still open?

Yep, anything not yet claimed in the characters tab is still open. Which reminds me that I have to finish up my own sheet before someone steals the last scraps of land. I'll finally have some time, since I've only got one more exam on Monday and then I'm pretty much done.
Also should we get a discord or chat going to discuss IC/OOC issues?

This is a good idea. Here, have a non-expiring invite since there's literally no reason to use the self-destructing one for this. discord.gg/SFYdbw4

@KeyguypersonIs there any specific date which IC starts or should we have it be in vague month terms?

Month terms works, if someone else mentions a date then you can go ahead and base stuff around that. The month is the only important thing though.
@ClocktowerEchos

All I read was that they would be playing heavy diplomacy compared to the rest, I don't think it mentions that they would have to stay the same. I did see that we probably wouldn't need a sheet, but would rather be different, but if so I will just play vanilla Mexico, either way I'm ok with.

Yeah, I'd prefer you just start vanilla and have the civil war happen over the course of the RP.

Comrade @Keyguyperson senpai, what is answer to:

<Snipped quote by @Byrd Man>

Answer pls or face gulag deth squids lik spam ses will happen

I don't see any problem, it'd be nice to have some flavor.

@Chairman Stein@Keyguyperson

Aye. When can we get an IC open and up for posting?

Right now fam. http://www.roleplayerguild.com/topics/162783-the-american-spring-an-alternate-present-rp/ooc#post-4273292
I'd also like to note that all complete applications from the interest check have been accepted, and that IC posting is already open. I won't be making the first post because I'm 1/2 a percent away from passing my math class and boy howdy would those credits be nice.
The American Spring: An Alternate Present RP

On April 26th, 2017, American forces crossed the 38th parallel into North Korea after the nation performed a nuclear test in celebration of the founding of the Korean People's Army. The increasingly divided superpower was reunited briefly in support of the war, and when the Chinese chose not to intervene it was considered already won. A long slog similar to the original Korean war set in, with the North fighting fiercely to defend its borders.

Fearing a retaliatory strike from America, North Korea failed to walk the talk and didn't deploy any nuclear weapons in the early days of the war. Both sides chose to keep the war conventional, with the North knowing it could be annihilated and the USA knowing that the loss of even one city might turn the public against the war. American and South Korean pressure-combined with the agenda of national politicians-forced the Japanese Diet to consider repealing Article 9 so as to provide offensive support in the war.

The moment the bill passed, Chinese forces crossed the North Korean border. Not to invade, as most had expected, but to rush to reinforce the front lines. Both the USS Carl Vinson and USS Ronald Reagan were sunk by Chinese anti-ship ballistic missiles as the official opening act of the war, leaving America with 12,000 dead in a strike that took seconds and without their main source of naval power projection in the area. The entire face of the war changed in an instant, as the Liaoning and its fleet took control of the East China Sea.

Fearing that their anti-ship missiles would be countered with American strategic strikes, the PRC preemptively destroyed American reconnaissance satellites. The debris created by the attacks snowballed into full-on Kessler syndrome, which was likely less of an unintended consequence and more of a calculated risk. In the face of American strategic superiority, the Chinese simply crippled everyone's strategic capabilities.

With the help of the Chinese, the North went on the offensive. Seoul fell in July, and shortly afterwards North Korea took an action that would forever change the world.

On July 12th, 2017, over two million people lost their lives in the nuclear bombing of Busan. America retaliated with an ICBM strike at Pyongyang, which ultimately did nothing to stop the enemy advance. Northern forces marched through the charred remains of Busan on the first of August. In September, the USA launched an all-out assault on Shanghai while Japanese forces landed in war-torn Korea. The two-pronged attack had been meant to force China into a two-front war, but instead it laid the groundwork for America's downfall.

The greatest naval invasion in history quickly turned into the greatest defeat. Both landing attempts were pushed back by Chines forces, resulting in the most pathetic military defeat in America's history. The initial rallying effect the war had on the American public had given way to cries for peace, the opposite of what the government had hoped for. Were the government fairly popular before the war, the public would have been outraged at the enemy and thirsty for revenge. Instead, the public was outraged at the government that started the war in the first place.

A massive protest took place in Washtington D.C, with over a million people protesting the war in the American capital alone. Across the country, similar protests took place. The massive loss of life, constant defeats, and the destruction of orbital communication infrastructure had come to a head. On the second day of the protests, the tragedy now known as the Washington Massacre took place. National Guard units opened fire on the protesters, which led to an all-out riot in the streets of the capital.

Armory raids were executed by various different anti-government groups across the country, and by November the USA had erupted into all-out civil war like that seen in Syria after the Arab Spring. What was almost the Third World War became a regional dispute between Japan and China, and the attention of the world turned to the American homeland. Out of the countless different rebel groups, whichever one won would inherit the domain of what had once been the greatest superpower on the planet.

It is January of 2018, and the Second American Civil War is in full swing.

This RP will be restricted to North America, since most players will play the role of a rebel group within America and said rebel groups are definitely not going to be able to organize a naval invasion of Hawaii. Canada and Mexico will likely get involved at some point, especially considering that Alaska has a hell of a lot of oil that any faction would be happy with getting their hands on. Both countries will eventually have a stake in the war, since the rebel factions can take any shape or form you want with only minimal realism necessary.

The end goal for everyone is the same: take control of America. You can try to accomplish this through any means you wish. As such, this RP will be heavily military-based. Establishing (and disrupting) supply lines, taking key locations, and killing important figures will all be big focuses here. Donald Trump is in everyone's crosshairs, and other individuals (your own military leaders, related media personalities, etc.) all make for great targets for the other factions.

There are only three possibilities for you if you want to play something other than a rebel group: Canada, Mexico, or what remains of the USA. The USA is NOT a military juggernaut anymore, since the intense divisions caused by the constant military defeats has led much of the military to desert. Canada and Mexico are both currently uninvolved, and as such anyone playing as them will be playing the diplomacy game for the most part. For Canada and Mexico, the goal is to ensure that the winner of the war will be friendly to you.

It must be stressed that these rebel groups are just that: rebel groups. None of them have a nice pretty senate chamber, and none of them are designing their own tanks or laying down destroyers. The central figures of these factions will likely be generals and such, and everyone will be using equipment stolen from armories or owned before the war. As a final note about equipment, Kessler syndrome has taken out the satellite network. As a result, any munitions that require GPS guidance are now useless as is anything else that uses a GPS.

Faction Sheet (Not required if you're playing as a pre-existing nation):
Name of Faction:
Flag:
Platform (Are you communists? Fascists? Liberals that just want Hillary? Conservatives that just want Cruz?):
Important Individuals:
Territory:
History (How did your faction get started, did you take any actions of note before the civil war began?):
Military Forces (How do you fight? What do you fight with? Who fights for you?):

I am contemplating being Oathkeepers or some radical group of that nature.

I just think there are people severely overestimating the military capabilities and ideological projection capabilities of other countries here. The US is still military super power here. A humilating defeat trying to invade a country whose military philosophy was built on guerrila warfare from the days of Mao onward doesn't make the US military which has bases literally all over the world magically vanish.

Blowing up a couple super carriers and satellites doesn't mean a country with a global military hegemony suddenly loses that edge. The worst case scenario is a loss of our military activity in East Asia due to being rebuffed by China. The US military is like 6-10x more expansive than the next largest military. The power balance is very lopsided... Intervening in the civil war of a super power would be a massive, massive gamble for any foreign force.

Also does the US international military still carry out operations even if the domestic situaiton has collapsed? I mean, they are likely without their CiC to set an agenda but they're still likely out there. A military without a country and all that.

I should point out that the USA is NOT defunct. The Federal Government does still control a large portion of the military, and overseas forces still exist. There is technically still a war against China and North Korea, but it's mostly being fought by Japan since there isn't much left in the way of homeland support for American troops. Obviously, the government is trying to bring back as many troops as possible since the situation is severe enough that they might as well have been invaded (I mean, there ARE Chinese backed forces on the Gulf Coast).

For the government, the problem is that they simply couldn't fight the rebellions with the loyal forces they had left on the continent. If the minds of humanity weren't being radically changed by the unseen force of the mysterious beings known as "Online Play-By-Post Roleplayers", then the government could have just mobilized the national guard and called reservists up if necessary (and China probably wouldn't have Kessler'd it up). Here, though, there's rampant desertion among those same forces. The objective of the government right now is to consolidate the loyal forces and get a pushback going before the rebels start to get solid control over their territories.

I'd also like to ask everyone if they're willing to give up some territory to the feds, since we're filling up quicker than I expected and there isn't much room left for the poor fucks.

@Keyguyperson

When will this game be started?

Tomorrow or Monday. IC will be open around then, but I'll only post after Thursday because that's when I have my math final and if I don't get a B on that then I fail the class.
Alright, commies. What are your thoughts on reeducation camp, reeducating those that do not follow the communist rule book? And what if they refuse to adopt communist ideas and values? What then?

Reeducation camps are an essential component of communism, it says so in the first paragraph of the Communist Manifesto. And we shoot them. Or make them slaves to Carlos Marco, the creator of the Bratwurst School of Cultural Marcoism (he's immortal don't question it).
You know, I'll be totally honest. I think communism could work in the future. With automation and AI I think it's possible. But I certainly wouldn't support it now. Communist regimes have killed too many people and the communists around the Guild talk about violence against their political enemies so much that it makes me feel violence is a feature of communism, not a bug. Plus there's the fact that communist economies often do so poorly people end up starving to death and I have to eat.

Even if communism is theoretically possible with some major advancements in technology I don't see any reason to risk being killed by an oppressive regime or starved by a failed economy. Nobody in this thread has even proposed answers to the failures of communism.

Here lemme give you some piles of bullshit because its 4 AM and I'm an insomniac.

First off, communism has never been achieved. Tried? Yes. Achieved? Not even close, at least not since that one bastard went and figured out how to grow plants. Fuck that guy. He screwed it all up.

Communism isn't "Big government taxes everyone" or "Daddy Stalin owns you" or even "Free everything duuuuuuuuude", its dozens of different systems that all share the same heritage from Marxism and simply state that the workers should own the means of production. Most every state that has had the stated goal of achieving communism has at some point said "We'll have an intermediary stage between capitalism and total communist anarchy, and we'll channel the worker's power through an authoritarian government to avoid democracy fucking things up." and then someone inevitably comes along and fucks everything up (the USSR after WWII is a good example, since its system during the war was excusable since it was facing an existential threat and needed to function as a well-oiled machine, but the fact that it continued to operate as such after the war was fucking pathetic tbh).

China is the saddest example. Almost had a functioning vanguard after the inevitable crash-industrialization famine (combined with all the local leaders acting like it was still feudal times and reporting higher harvests to make the central government happy, resulting in all their people starving to death), then a big line of fuckheads comes along and makes it capitalist but still fairly authoritarian. Thanks Deng, you piece of shit.

The main problem is that communist revolutions usually tend towards authoritarianism as an intermediary stage, since its perceived as a more solid defense against capitalism. In reality, it's more like putting all your eggs in one basket. If the central government suddenly goes "you know, that whole 'letting the USA build sweatshops here' thing was pretty alright" then the party's over. Honestly, if the USSR had just structured its government after America's after WWII it probably would have avoided its slow descent back into capitalism.

As for violence, are you REALLY going to make an argument against an economic system by saying that it used violent revolution to come about? Would you be opposed to a revolution in, say, Iran? Do you support moderate rebels in Syria? Would you have sheltered minutemen during the American Revolution? Would you have supported the war effort in WWII? Or would you have written a witty opinion piece about Hitler missing a ball while he slaughters millions across Europe? Would you have turned revolutionaries into the British, knowing they'd get beaten and their information would be used to kill others?

Violence is not an inherent evil. You should know this by now. The only reason you see it as a valid argument against communism is because you see communism as bad and don't think you'd shoot someone else. Every political ideology has used violence to achieve its goals, as has every nation. Violence is necessary to defeat that which cannot be defeated through peaceful protest, which is a whole hell of a lot of things I can tell you that right now.

"Communist" economics don't do poorly, the economic conditions communism appears in do poorly. China wasn't some nice happy land of plenty before Mao came along. Famines happened and people died. Russia wasn't full of fat people and McDonald's on every corner before Stalin came along, famines happened and people died. The famines in China and the USSR don't display the problems of communism, they display the problems the intermediary systems set up by both the PRC and USSR FIXED. Famines started to be seen less and less going further into the 20th century.

Honestly, these famines are just another example of how you're selective with where you apply arguments. I doubt you care about the 21,000 people that starve to death every day (7,665,000 or so a year) beyond liking facebook posts and maybe sending 20 bucks to some charity that takes 15 of them for itself. When 7 million people die under communism because of a famine, its a "failing of the system" and "proof it can't work". When 7 million die under capitalism it's just a fact of life, it's inevitable, there was no way around it.

We have enough food to feed everyone in the world. I'm sure you know that by now. And the problem ISN'T that "it's hard to transport", it's that our economic system prevents it from getting to where it's needed because it wouldn't be profitable to the people selling the food. And no, your 20 bucks a month isn't helping.
