Lightning Bug stood still with her eyes closed, smiling softly to herself as she felt the wind whip her hair across her face. She was dressed in her full costume for the first time since she had put all the parts together, and she wanted to savor the moment. Not that she planned on doing anything particularly special, apart from the test flight she was conducting of her tech and the costume itself. No no, this was simply a stress test, and an added layer of disguise in case someone somehow spotted her. She had taken to wearing elements of the costume after her and Ezra's first few hits on the cities ATMs, figuring that someone wearing goggles and a full cloak would be harder to find than a girl with her face and regular clothes on display. So far it had worked, though security footage had begun to surface of herself. Nobody seemed to suspect Jessica Beedle though, and that was the important part.

Lightning Bug shifted a bit as the wind picked up, bringing a chill to the air that cut through the early spring warmth. Maybe it was time to head in, the test had been going well so far. Jessie looked up and opened her eyes, her smile widening to a grin as she set her eyes on the city, laid out below her. Jessie looked down then (Or up?) at the metallic disc pulsing with energy that her heavy boots were anchored to. After her talk with Ez in the burger shop months prior, the two had begun designing a way for Jessie to fly in their spare time. It was quickly decided that a flight suit was out of the question, as the time, energy, and materials it would require to build that was out of their grasp. But then Ezra had hit upon an idea. Hover technology was standard in a lot of Ghol devices, and with added microthrusters one could conceivably build a working hoverboard.

And so they did.

Lightning Bug shifted her weight and felt the hoverboard react, flipping her back into an upright position. The young girl shook her head, her ears ringing from the sensation of her blood rushing out of her head and back to where it belonged. She angled downwards and let out a joyful holler as she went into a free-fall, the wind rushing through her hair and past her face, her cloak billowing out behind her. For not the first time, Lightning Bug was grateful for her goggles, as she knew she wouldn't be able to concentrate with her eyes drying out from the winds. Crouching down slightly, she urged the board to go faster, the city growing larger as she approached, the buildings filling her vision. Soon, Lightning Bug was descending into an open public square, screaming over the heads of amazed and horrified onlookers as she soared past.

Leaning into a turn, Lightning Bug whipped around a fountain and flew down a main road. The streets went by in a blur of motion, within minutes she was passing the CCU campus, blowing a raspberry in the window of a particularly annoying professor before arcing up and over the building and heading up to a good vantage point. Several people had seen her by now, she was sure of that. And as intoxicating as this was, as exhilarating as showing off her skills and smarts made her feel, Lightning Bug knew she couldn't track anyone back to their hideout. Luckily, she had discovered that as long as the hoverboard was connected to her, she could teleport with it, and a few short hops later, Lightning Bug found herself on the roof of Ezra's apartment building. Deactivating the boot magnets with a quick eye movement, Jessie stepped off the board and reached down, grabbing it out of the air and slinging it onto her back which sent it into compact mode.

Fishing the key to the maintenance shed out of her pocket, Jessie slipped inside, landing heavily into her wheely chair she had moved over and scooting over to the small bank of laptops she and Ezra had set up. Some of them were working out programming, interfacing human programming languages with the Ghol technology, some of them were monitoring metahuman references in the news, there was a program dedicated to finding potential references to herself and Ezra so they could do some damage control of need be, and finally there was a small system set up to monitor ghost hunting websites. After learning a bit more about the ectoplasmic energy source, Jessie had drawn a parallel to ghost stories and hauntings. IF even one of those turned out to be true, it was possible that the pair could find a way to create a breach into a theorized fold in space/time, a pocket dimension of pure ectoplasmic energy. IF they could do that, they'd never need to worry about power again...

Jessie walked into the burger joint a few minutes after Ezra had arrived, hauling her now-overloaded backpack over her shoulder. She had skipped the rest of her morning classes and gone out to get a few things that she thought were needed for their experiments. As it turned out, 'a few things' quickly spiraled into 'needing another trip to the ATM because she had spent two grand on electronics'. So now her backpack was full to bursting with brand new toys and components, and also a fair amount of cash for safekeeping. A quick scan of the restaurant showed Ezra by the window on his laptop, using the sun to hide his complexion and glowing eyes probably. Jessie booked it up to the counter and quickly ordered her food, which ended up amounting to three burgers and a small bucket of fries. The amount of electrical energy that her body produced had to come from somewhere, and she had figured out years ago that part of it came from her caloric intake, she burned fat cells to convert into electricity.

After waiting a few minutes for her food and confirming that her order was correct, Jessie carried her tray and hauled her backpack over to the window table and sat across form Ezra breathlessly. "Hey! There you are!" She said with a grin as she set the food down and tucked her backpack under the table. Jessie dug her phone out of her pocket and opened up the bookmarked pages on her news app as she sat down, sliding the phone across so Ezra could see. Photos of the metahuman and suspected metahuman activity plastered across the news. The purple lighting-bolt lady floating with a burning city behind her. The Nazi she was fighting levitating over buildings. This new guy, 'Superman' landing next to news reporters. She leaned across the table closer to Ezra and lowered her voice, making sure nobody was around to hear. "They can all fly. You can fly. Why the hell can't I? I wanna fly. Can we add that to the list, some kind of flight suit?" She asked with a joking wink. Well, maybe half-joking. She really did want to fly, but at this point they were still experimenting with the technology, the pair of students was likely far off from being able to build a working prototype of anything apart from small gadgets.

"Dude, you have to upgrade that piece of junk you have." Jessie said, changing gears as she leaned back in her chair and motioning to Ezra's old laptop. "That's no good for anything, it's been obsolete for years. No way it'll stand up to the kind of stress our projects will put it through." She said, not caring if anyone could hear now. She thought that was discreet enough that nobody would suspect them, and the thing was old and slow anyway, nothing she said was untrue. "Fortunately for you..." She continued, reaching under the table and digging into her backpack. "Someone just hit the jackpot today, and decided to help outfit the group so things run a bit smoother!" She said with glee as she produced a brand-new laptop, the protective plastic film still clinging to it. She had gone to her tech guy, over in the Grove district; that's where most of the day had gone so far, as well as the cash. The beefiest, most powerful machine he had available, now all hers... Well, Ezra's now... Hers was on the way.

"This is what I wanted to talk about." She said, her voice becoming quieter again as she slid the new laptop across to her friend. "We have a cashflow problem. Well, and an energy problem, but that's not something I can help with, your stuff doesn't like electricity much... But cash, we need. We need parts, chips, components, capacitors, computers, and unless you're ready to slap on a mask and hold up an electronics store, we need to get it all legitimately. And that, my friend... Is where this comes in." Jessie slowly reached into her backpack one more time and pulled out a thick stack of bills, setting on the table behind the laptop to obscure it from the rest of the restaurant. "We have to be able to live, too. Unless you want to abandon planet and go float with the stars, we need money for food. Clothes. We need to go out like this, look like normal people. You need hair dye constantly. You could certainly do with decorating you place some more. This..." She said, sliding the stack of bills towards him. "Is the answer to all those questions. I figured something out this morning. ATMs have really bad internal security. I can just tell them to give the green away. Plus, it's insured. We can do this, man. We don't have to worry about money ever again, we just... Go to the ATM whenever we need extra cash. Whenever we need anything That's two grand right there, and it's all for you Ezra. That's your share. How's that sound to you?"

Coast City College, downtown campus, Coast City.

Jessie's phone buzzed harshly in her hand as she stepped outside the college campus building and into the harsh morning light. The sun was just starting to burn away the morning haze that hung over the city, leaving the streets in an uncomfortable extra-humid stage that would last about another hour or so. Jessie always hated this time of day, but there was nothing she could do about it, she needed this class. Fortunately, she didn't usually have to be outside at this time, but today there were some special circumstances.

Looking at her phone as it buzzed again, Jessie opened the device to see another news headline staring at her; this time a museum robbery in New York, in broad daylight, with people around... And nobody saw a thing. Except one girl who got a selfie with the suspect, which was going viral. A masked guy, who stole a pair of goggles that belonged to one of the Activists... No way in hell that wasn't another metahuman. Like the Nazi and the purple lightning chick from the other day, or the reports of 'magic' shenanigans happening all over. Everything was starting to happen. If Jessie wanted in on this whole thing, she'd have to act pretty soon.

But Jessie knew she couldn't just think about herself now. Ezra was still in hiding, and probably would be for a long time. Jessie was confident that she wouldn't get caught in her heists, but she kind of wanted Ezra involved now too, and she didn't want to be responsible for him getting found by the government. So her plans had to change. She still needed cash, even more now that she had a whole new world's worth of technology to experiment with, and to be able to leave her parents with a nest egg when she flew the coop, and to support herself with, and whatever Ezra needed. So she needed a new target, one that didn't just involve walking into a bank and demanding sacks full of money. Fortunately, Jessie was nothing if not flexible.

Crossing the street towards the secured ATM, Jessie ducked inside the small windowed building and shivered, glad to be out of the damp cold for a moment. She turned her attention to the automated money-dispensing kiosk and took a deep breath, stepping up to the screen. The nervous girl took her card out of her pocket and made a show of pretending to slide it into the machine. This was just a test run, so it had to look good for the cameras. As she rested her left hand on the keypad, Jessie reached out with her mind to poke experimentally at the programming inside. Firewalls, antiviruses, redundancies, everyone you would expect from a secured computer. Most of that would be enough to stop an ordinary hacker in their tracks. Jessie was no ordinary hacker. Nobody designed their computers with a direct neural interface in mind. Who would? You'd have to be insane to think of it, let alone devote resources to implementing it.

Pushing forward with her mind, Jessie's consciousness swerved and dove through the processes and algorithms of the machine, her fingers pretending to tap buttons as she poked and prodded the ATMs brain with her own unrelenting curiosity. She had to wrap it up, had to get out of here soon, she just had to...

DISPENSE FUNDS

Fuck. Yes. Just a test run, don't try for anything crazy, just... Take a chunk, leave the big hauls for later. Jessie pushed the command through into the machine directly before backing her mind out of the poorly defended cash robot. The machine whirred to life and she could hear the gears and sensors inside activating and counting out bills. Now for the moment of truth...

The ATM opened the cash drawer and a thick stack of bills slid out, waiting for Jessie's eager hand to grab them. A quick glance through the stack confirmed her thoughts and she breathed an elated sigh of relief. This could work. Sticking the stack into her coat pocket, Jessie pulled out her phone again as she walked away from the ATM, dialing up Ezra's number and typing out a quick text.

"Ez, meet me for lunch on campus today after class. Want to talk to you about the crazy happenings in the news, and show you something. I have some plans for our tech project that I need to run by you."

Jessie stood by the edge of the roof, glancing over the railing and grinning at the sight of the drop below. It was always an adrenaline rush to be up here, to be able to see everything for miles (Well, on a clear day anyway). Of course, the adrenaline was tempered a bit by the fact that she was holding a huge tupperware container of macaroni, the best comfort food known to mankind, but the edge was still there.

Jessie's mother had finished the meal for her 'sick' friend a half hour prior, and Jessie had spent the remaining time gathering up the things she thought she'd need. Her goggles, to help her get across the city. Her backpack full of tools, in case the goggles broke. Her iPod, to listen to music as she walked home in case the trip there tired her out too much. Bare copper, to help her charge her iPod in case the battery fritzed out again. Aaaand macaroni. For eating. By Ezra, not Jessie.

Setting the plastic container down for a moment, Jessie pulled her dark brown cloak over her shoulder and slipped the goggles over her eyes before pulling her hood up. It wasn't quite the full costume she had in mind, but then again this wasn't supposed to be her glorious debut either. She just needed to not be recognized. Jessie blinked sharply as the goggle HUD came to life, a green tint overtaking the world as a slider appeared into place at the bottom of her vision. Her eye tracking software had worked after a few weeks of bug testing, and now by focusing on the bottom portion of her goggles She could adjust the zoom up to three times what her eyesight normally was. Was it was time for a true field test... Getting to Ezra's building.

Lightning Bug picked up the container of cheesey noodles again and scanned the city skyline. Though Ezra had never directly shared his building with her, she had been able to narrow it down by the direction he walked, streets he took, and how long he said it took him to get to work and school. His cell phone ping from this morning had settled it though. A Place called Satomi Towers. Jessie had spent most of the morning memorizing what the building looked like, and she was confident she could find it now.Just had to get a little closer... Focusing in the direction she knew Ezra came from, Jessie zoomed in on a building a few streets over and...

PIFF

In a sudden purple spark of energy, Lightning Bug found herself atop the chosen rooftop. She grinned as she felt the rush of adrenaline spike again, reveling in the chance to use her powers. To let go and be who she was inside felt incredible, she could go anywhere, do anything! But first, to deliver her friend some trickery food...

PIFF

PIFF

PIFF

Four total jumps, and Bug was feeling a bit drained, if excited. She had pushed farther and farther with each leap, and it had taken more and more energy each time. Fortunately, she was too wound up to care right now. She was on the right rooftop, assuming Google Earth had told her the truth. She had maybe one more good jump left in her if she needed it, but she didn't expect to need a quick escape. She looked around the desolate rooftop, noting it was cleaner and more spacious than her own, and nodding in approval. Pulling off her goggles and stuffing them into her backpack, Jessie headed for the building access door, scowling as she reached it and pulled on the handle. It was jammed. Locked maybe.

Looking around, Jessie grinned as she found the key to all her troubles. A maintenance shack on the edge of the roof. There'd be a spare key in there. Waltzing over to the tiny building, Jessie tried the door, not surpised to find it locked as well. No matter, there were windows on the side that would allow her to Piff right in and--What the Hell was that shit inside that shed? Some kind of oval, seed-pod shaped thing, but big enough for a person... Tools and tech she didn't recognize... Something was wrong here. Was this what was up with Ezra? It couldn't just be a coincidence, right? That something like this would show up here, at the same building her mysterious friend was acting so suspiciously from? She had to find out, and if he did have something to do with it... She had to convince him to let her play with that shit. For now though, she had to get inside...

PIFF

One last jump and she was on the ground now, heaving Piffed off the side of the building. The front door was the best option now. After looking around aimlessly for a moment, trying to find some kind of resident directory, Jessie groaned and looked for some help. A little old boring slow confused lady proved to be her best friend in this situation, and after plastering on a fake smile and spewing some cotton-candy bullshit about her sick schoolmate, Jessie had Ezra's number. His apartment number, that is.

One quick elevator ride later, Jessie arrived in front of the locked door. She made sure her hood was pulled down and the macaroni was presenting itself, and knocked firmly on the door. "Yo Ez! I got food for you, dude!"

Jessie awoke again with another start, as the obnoxious donkey noises she had just set up as her text alert went off, ensuring she would wake up if Ezra texted her again. Damn, that was loud. She fumbled with the phone, standing up from the chair she had fallen asleep in and accidentally sending it crashing to the floor. Jessie winced at the combination of loud sounds, if her parents weren't awake before they likely were now...

The sleep-robbed girl glared at her phone angrily before checking the text message, processing the information within. It seemed plausible on the surface, but... If it wasn't bad enough for him to need even a little support, how would Ezra know if it was contagious? Actually, who could have even caught a bug from him, besides herself. Jessie was pretty sure she was the only one Ezra spent much time with. Combined with the evidence of a picture message, and the general suspiciousness of 5 in the morning, Jessie wasn't convinced.

Knock knock knock. Came a sound of Jessie's door. The girl turned to hear her mothers muffled voice coming through the door, laced with concern. "Jessie honey, are you okay? I heard some noise and you're never up this early..."

"Yeah mom, I'm fine!" Jessie called out, rubbing her eyes in exasperation as she searched for some clean clothes to throw on. She was up now, and it'd be stupid to try and get back to sleep. Jessie paused for a moment as she looked at the open text field on her phone, weighing her options. "Um... Hey mom, Ezra just texted me; you know the guy from the gym? He's not feeling well and..." Jessie sighed, she was committed now... "Uh, do you think we can make some macaroni and cheese and I'll bring it to him later? I don't know that he has much in the way of real food..."

A long, pregnant pause from the other side of the door, though Jessie could hear her mothers shuffling feet. "Well... Of course we can, Jessie." She said, sounding genuinely surprised. "I'll get started on it after breakfast, that way you should be able to get it to him before lunch." The sound of footsteps as Jessie's mom began to move away from the door, before suddenly turning and coming back. "One more thing Honey..."

Jessie groaned, rolling her eyes. She was sure her mom was about to make her watch the store now... "Yes mom?"

"I... I'm proud of you, taking care of your friend like this."

Jessie paused for a moment, blinking in surprise as she sat down on her bed slowly. She heard her mother shuffle away and she smiled slightly. Of course she knew her parents were proud of her, she was freaking awesome after all. But... She rarely got to hear it. The approval was nice. And now she wanted to make sure she'd earned it. Jessie opened her phone back up and wrote out a response to Ezra.

"Alright loser, here's the plan. I'm bringing you some homemade macaroni and cheese. I'll leave it outside your door if I have to, but I don't want to leave you to the horrors of instant noodles + head cold. Gimmie your address and it'll be ready for you by noon." Of course, Jessie had no intention of just leaving it outside his door, but nobody had to know that yet...
November 30, 5:17 AM, Beedle's apartment, Coast City

@Ceta de Cloyes

Jessie woke up to the harsh sound of her phone vibrating on her crafting station. Across the room. At 5 AM. On a Saturday. Who the Hell was trying to get in touch with her at this godforsaken hour? 5 AM shouldn't be allowed to exist, she thought to herself as she carefully danced around the discarded clothing and half-finished projects taking up most of her floorspace. 5 AM should be illegal. Jessie finally made it to the source of the offending noise, wincing as the brightness of her phone screen caused her to momentarily blind herself. She stared in confusion for a moment at the message, her sleep-addled brain putting the pieces together.

Ezra didn't get sick. Though to be fair, she had only known him for like, a month. But still, a month in the middle of flu season, and not even a case of the sniffles. Though, she hadn't gotten sick either, but that was more than likely because she was what her dad called 'Metahuman' and something as stupid as the flu shouldn't bother her-- Back on track, Ezra shouldn't be sick. And if he was, he shouldn't be texting her at 5 AM. Besides, she had just seen him yesterday, before he disappeared to do whatever weird stuff he did when he disappeared.

Something felt wrong about this. Jessie didn't consider herself an expert on social situations, most people bored the crap out of her. But Ezra was the closest thing she had to a friend, and this felt... Abrupt. Sighing, Jessie sat down in her wheelie chair, setting her phone on her crafting station and putting her hands over it. She closed her eyes and focused on the intricate workings of the device, tracing the signal it had received, bouncing of cell towers, her consciousness compressing down to a fine pinpoint as he tried to get a sense of the phone that had pinged her own... It would be so much easier, incredibly simple if she just had Ezra's phone here. She could get into it with little trouble, even with a lock on it. Find everything on there, probably even get his bank info and social security number if she wanted. This way though... If she was lucky, she'd maybe get a sense of its recent activity.

Jessie was nothing if not lucky. Only one cell tower between her phone and Ezras. The signal was good, and she could feel... A phone call. A... A picture? And then a picture message, a followup text to the same line, too scrambled and far to make out where it went. And one text to her. Jessie opened her eyes and leaned back in her chair, her mind finally coming to life as adrenaline began to spike. A phone call could be explained, calling the gym to say he was sick. The text to her could be just that. But a picture message? Who was he texting a picture to, especially a long-distance one? He didn't have a girlfriend, she was confident of that. No friends that he would talk about. And why a picture? Something smelled wrong.

"What's up dude?" She replied quickly, surprising even herself. "You okay? Need some like... Soup or anything? Let me know what's up." Her fingers hit the SEND button as she watched the little text bubble pop up and she scowled at her phone. She was... Concerned. Maybe she was reading too much into it. But why would she do that? Jessie thought of herself as fairly level headed, she wasn't one to overreact much. What did it mean if she was? But what if something really was wrong? She was the coolest person she knew, and the most powerful to boot. She could help. But why? Why help Ezra? She'd only known him a month, just needed a workout buddy, and someone to do coursework with, and to vent about school and work to, and follow her around to go get weird food when the urge struck, and not look at her like she was crazy all the time, only when she was acting crazy, and oh god he was her friend that's why. She cared. If something was wrong, she needed to help. She had to add his name to her very short list. And if he wouldn't accept her help... Maybe Lightning Bug would have a slightly different debut than she intended.

Jessie gave Ezra a small, genuine smile as she accepted his number and slipped the paper into one of her many pockets. She pulled a pen from her backpack and scribbled her own number on a piece of paper before handing it to him as well. She didn't like most people, and made no secret of that except when she was working. But there was something different about this guy. He was kind of strange, no getting around that. But it seemed obvious that he knew that too, and possibly was even okay with that. Someone who was okay with their own weirdness was alright in Jessie's book, she figured. Besides, now that the boring small talk was out of the way, they wouldn't have to go through the painful ordeal again.

Jessie stepped back as Ezra motioned to the station, nodding as he said goodbye and waving at him. "Yeah, I was about to veer off myself. It was good talking to you Ezra, we should do it again. I'm pretty much always up for a distraction!" She said with a chuckle before turning and heading off down the street. Jessie tied her hair up into a short ponytail as she began to jog again, smiling to herself as she considered the idea of having a friend. Depending on how it went, maybe he could even be some kind of confidant in her escapades. If she could get her damn goggles working, that is...

Jessie beamed as the slightly-odd green-eyed man began to speak, seeming to be opening up to her. He seemed nice, if a bit shy, but she didn't care much about that. Jessie knew she tended to ramble anyway, maybe a more mousey type would let her do that without getting scared off. "Hell yeah CCU," She gonfirmed, pumping her fist in the air. "Screw those Central elites!" She cried out, eliciting a glare from a group of tourists from across the street. She stuck her tongue out at them, figuring they must be from Central and were, therefore, elitists.

"Man, your work almost sounds more boring than mine!" She said as she turned her attention back to her companion. "Do they let you work out while you're there? They should, it'd only be fair. I should get a membership too, I need to get fit." She said, sparing a glance at her twiglike arms. The girl didn't expect to get into any fights when she began to enact her plans, but it'd be better safe than sorry.

When the subject of school came up, Jessie listened a bit more closely; school was one of the few things that didn't bore her immediately, and she was glad to hear some of her studies may overlap with Ezra. "Man, that sounds like a wide courseload! Engineering, huh? I'm a comp-sci major, but I'm taking some electrical engineering classes too. Technology moves forward every day, and it's our job to keep up with it! You know, if you ever need help with your biology stuff, my dad might be able to help, depending on what it is. He used to be a geneticist, until his small-brained colleagues laughed him out of a job over a theory they were incapable of understanding." Jessie said, letting an edge of bitterness into her voice. She could still remember the day her father had lost his position, and the spiraling the family had done after that. But soon enough, they wouldn't need to worry about that anymore.

Jessie perked up when Ezra asked about herself, flashing him another grin as the hint of a foul mood evaporated. "Oh, me! My favorite subject!" She quipped, only half-joking. "Well you already know about school, I only work part time at the shop over here, my parents run it and have some high-schoolers to help them so I'm mostly weekend work. It's real boring, I gotta tell you. And everyone expects you to know everything about all the flowers, and I can barely remember when they got watered last! Plus the smell... People always say 'Oh it's so nice in here, you must love it', but everything just blends together and gives me a headache... Good thing it's only part time, and I even got our early today!" Jessie could see her turn coming up, and she doubted Ezra was heading the same way she was after that, but they still had a moment if he wanted to talk some more, and it wasn't as if they'd never see each other again.

Lauren! That was the lady's name! Not that Jessie would bother to remember it, if she had her way she'd never work in the shop again. She shook Ezra's hand vigorously, flashing him a toothy grin. "Why would something be wrong? Your lady friend just wanted to browse, my dad's going to take care of her order when she decides." The young lady fell into step beside Ezra, the guy seemed kind of nervous. Time to turn up the charm, maybe.

"I think I've seen you around school too, haven't I?" Jessie asked, slinging her backpack onto her shoulders and swinging her arms back and forth. "It seems weird that we've never really talked before, right? I mean, we go to school together, work next door to each other, I guess we know the same people. Why haven't we ever hung out? Like, what are you studying in school? How's the gym job? What do you do for fun? You know, boring small talk!"
