We're roleplayers, of course we're going to make a third option the GM didn't present.

The GM should know exactly why each character was or wasn't accepted and be willing to state such. But the reality is that sometimes other characters/players just synergize better

Limited slots and character applications exist as a way for the GM to manage their cast, maintain consistency and try to achieve mutual enjoyment for those involved.

Having caught up on the IC yesterday, I have to say I'm enjoying quite a few of the stories so far. So I just wanted to comment on what I'm enjoying and looking forward to as well as hopefully encouraging those writers and encouraging others to take the time to read some of the things they haven't.

@Sep's first post with Thor really got my attention because I thought the idea of Thor taking the time to answer a little girl's prayer and attend school with her was a lot of fun. The ending hook with Loki however was the icing on the cake for me. Which then leads us to his second post that he put up today. What is it that has Odin afraid? Considering the emphasis on the other pantheons in Sep's tagline, I have to wonder if there's another god gunning for Odin and Asgard. Really don't have any more of a guess than that but I'd love to find out what's going to happen.

@Hound55 returning to Blue Beetle is a return in fine form and oh how I've missed the misadventures of Ted Kord. While there are a lot of strengths among our group, Hound shines in comedic timing and dialogue. I can't think of a single post I've sat through with Kord where I don't have the dumbest grin plastered across my face and the two posts here continue that trend. Very much looking forward to more Misadventures of Blue Beetle and the addition of Booster to the cast was perfect.

@GreenGrenade on the other side of the coin definitely provided one of the more emotionally heavy posts in this RP. I couldn't help but feel pity for the Turtle and his failing mental state while he still tried to be the intimidating supervillain he knew himself to be. Barry struggling to find something to do with the Turtle that wasn't just punching him out reminds me of the Flash Museum episode of Justice League Unlimited where Flash sits at the bar with Trickster and just talks to him for a bit. Really refreshing stuff that reminds us that the best writing doesn't necessarily need to be combat orientated.

Everything I read yesterday was great but if you haven't kept up with the IC or if your time is especially limited, I highly recommend the posts belonging to the three above. I'll definitely be commenting more as we continue to keep this moving. Looking forward to seeing everyone's stories unfold and watching the world come together so I hope everyone enjoys my contributions as well.

Happy writing!

Nothing unusual here lol
St. Roch, Louisiana - 1878
The upbeat melody rang out across the saloon, clearly audible above the drone of its many patrons. Smoke from cigars and cigarillos hung in the air, their distinctive aroma adding its flair to the smell of the free-flowing alcohol that often splashed over the floor and tables. The laughter of sloshed men and the flirty giggles of painted women echoed within the four walls while a game of cat and mouse was exchanged between the two parties over the guise of the playing cards laid across the table. Men pretended to only come to these establishments to play a hand of poker or a round of blackjack, but the working women knew what they really wanted. They, after all, were the lifeblood of most of the frontier and St. Roch was no exception.

Suddenly, the doors to the saloon flew open. Slamming against the walls on either side of the frame, a dark silhouette filled the doorway. The echo of spurs was the only sound that could be heard through the saloon, aside from the continuing melody of the play piano. A hush had fallen over the patrons while they seemed to unanimously decide what sort of threat the man in the doorway held.

Each of his hands rested on his holsters, one strapped to either leg. A mask concealed his identity beneath the wide-brimmed hat above his head, and you'd be forgiven for mistaking him for another vigilante were it not for the white bird emblazoned on his chest.

"I’m lookin’ for ‘Gentleman’ Craddock." The man yelled into the saloon. His eyes darted back and forth, looking for any sort of reaction to the name. Not a word came from the collective gathering in front of him.

His arm was no more than a blur before a deafening gunshot rang out, silencing the player piano before the masked gunslinger spoke again.

"Perhaps you folks didn't hear me, I said I'm looking for 'Gentleman' Jim Craddock." The man in black repeated.

"Turns out ol'Jimmy doesn't quite live up to his name, and I intend to see him wear a hemp necktie."

Not a word came from the crowd. The masked man continued to study the room; he could tell some of the bolder men were getting itchy trigger fingers and would soon be throwing lead if he didn't get a better handle on the situation. Out of the corner of his eye, he watched a man slowly begin to slide his hand towards the table's edge. His other hand shot up, revolver in hand as he cocked the hammer and levelled the barrel with the man's face.

"Not another move. My quarrel ain't with you, partner. I'm only after the man who tried to force his way with my girl." Spitting in disgust at even the mention of the act committed, he turned back to the man.

"Now don't try to tell me you wouldn't want to see the man who committed such a heinous act get his comeuppance."

"You promise he'll hang?"

The woman's voice asked nervously, prompting the masked man to turn his gaze towards the source. Her face was painted, she was obviously working, but even with her face obscured, he could tell she was young. Younger than Cinnamon, perhaps too young even for the line of work she had fallen into. But that was neither here nor there, Craddock had dishonoured Cinnamon, and Hannibal Hawke wasn't about to stand for it.

"I'll string him up myself if the Sheriff won't see justice done, little lady."

"He's a horrible man." The young woman replied.

"Was here the night before last, bragging to everyone about the business he had and flashing all sorts of coin." There was a slight pause as though the girl was choosing her words before a slight shrug of her shoulder indicated she decided against being tactful.

"Surprised he made it out of here alive showing off that kind of money."

Hawke knew Craddock believed himself to be invincible. Some old gypsy had told him he'd only meet his end at the hands of 'noble blood.' It was why the coward had fled England for America in the first place. There was no nobility in the frontier.

"Did he say where he was going?"

"Said he was meeting a Mister Alan Wayne." The name may not have meant anything to the folks in St. Roch by Hawke had travelled enough to recognize a name like Wayne. No doubt that Craddock had swindled Wayne into meeting with him.

"You’ve been very helpful." Hawke replied while holstering his guns. Tossing a small wallet towards the barkeep, he spoke again.

“Drinks for all my new friends, keep the change.”

Location: Midway City - Michigan, United States of America
Ghosts of the Past #1.01: Fugue State

Interaction(s): None
Previously: None

The older model American built pick-up truck weaved in and out of the busy afternoon traffic. Exiting the interstate, the rebuilt engine let loose a loud rumble before the vehicle took the ramp and merged into the multilane road that wove its way through Midway City's downtown. Inside sat a scowling man who held a white knuckle grip on the steering wheel, all the while cursing under his breath to himself. While he supposed he should be lucky he wasn't facing jail time, court-ordered anger management was far from high on his list of priorities on his day off.

These days the driver tried to spend as little time in the city proper as he could. The world had certainly changed in the last five years, ever since the blue pyjama-wearing-boy scout the media had dubbed 'Superman' had literally flown onto every television screen in North America. Before that, it felt the world had never had to worry about a 'super-villain.' The bad guys in movies were still Germans, Russians and gang bangers. Now the world had to worry about interdimensional starfish and hive minds attacking New York every other Wednesday. It wasn't the driver's fault that he was angry about it. Everyone should have been upset by it, thoroughly enraged even.

Problems used to be solved by the guy with the bigger gun. But now, problems were solved by the guy with the bigger team of metahumans at their disposal. First came the Justice League, then came S.H.I.E.L.D. with their Avengers. What happens when either one of those teams decides to seize power for themselves, what happens when the Justice League decides they want to be the 'Justice Lords'.

Ruled over by a man dressed as a rodent.

Not on my watch.

"Carter Hall?"

The driver had been so caught up in his thoughts, the rest of the drive had disappeared. Snapping back to reality, he found himself sitting in a semicircle with several other adults, each looking about as happy about where they were as he was inwardly feeling.

"Mr. Hall, unfortunately, as this is your third time attending, I do need you to actually speak or else I can't sign off on your court papers."

It was as though Carter had been on auto-pilot. One moment he had been in his truck and the next here. He scarcely remembered parking the vehicle, let alone entering the building, taking a seat or even where the piping hot cup of coffee firmly grasped in his right hand came from. The out of body experience was something Carter was all too familiar with. Visions of other lives regularly haunted his slumbering mind. Worlds, languages and adventures he could have never known, never imagined vividly came to him while he tossed and turned only to wake in the morning with no apparent thought of where they came from nor any sort of rest. Even now, the heavy bags hung under his eyes, which no doubt prompted his unconscious need for coffee.

"One moment," Carter replied, breaking the heavy silence that hung over the room while the other individuals tried with no avail to not awkwardly stare at the man who seemingly just came out of a trance. Taking a long sip of the sobering beverage in his hand, it took almost all of Carter's willpower to not rear back in disgust. The burnt taste of overcooked cheap grinds invaded every corner of his mouth, prompting him to swallow hard and fast—the scorching liquid searing every inch down the back of his throat. With a slight sputter, he placed the styrofoam cup on the ground, before standing. Crossing the semicircle of chairs in a few strides, Carter positioned himself behind the podium the counsellor had previously held.

Gazing out over the group, Carter realized this was the first time he had ever truly looked over his fellow 'inmates'. It was a small group all said and done, only about five of them. One looked to be exactly the type you'd expect in an anger management session. Neck tattoo, gym and steroid inflated arms, too tight of a tank top clinging beneath a very loud jacket. The man next to him was the polar opposite. He wore glasses, a rumpled business suit and a tie that was clearly too tight. Another was a young woman who looked barely out of high school. Her eyes darted from the floor to the clock adorning the wall. Her left leg shook while she chewed the end of a pen held to her lips between two fingers, clearly in need of a hit of nicotine.

That left only two others. Another male with absolutely nothing remarkable about him, if Carter had to guess why the fourth figure was here, he'd go with spousal abuse. It was a shot in the dark. He had no grounds of justification for it. But he knew the type, and Mr. Bland screamed it. That left only 'Inmate Number Five'.

She was stunning. Maybe not in the traditional sense, but there was something about her that immediately took Carter's breath away. Well dressed, prim and poised; obviously white collar, which led to several questions about why on Earth she'd be in anger management. Red hair spilled over her shoulders, outlining the angular features of her face. A pair of piercing green eyes were raised to meet Carter's own gaze. They were fierce and full of life as they stared back defiantly, seemingly glowing in comparison to her radiant olive skin.

"Mr. Hall? Uh, you actually need to speak."

Carter shook his head, breaking the staring contest with the captivating woman. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her smirk.

Suddenly, he didn't hate this group quite as much.

Katar and Shayera Hol were a pair of alien law enforcement known on their homeworld of Thangar as 'Wingmen'. Thangar was the Capital of the Thanagarian Empire, the successor to the Polaran Empire which had previously ruled the Polaris System. In the spirit of their predecessors, the Thanagarians had become an expansionist race that plundered other worlds and stripped them of their resources and treasures to fund their ever-expanding fleet. Numerous members of their conquered worlds were taken as slaves and used to further the goals of the Thanagarians.

As Wingmen, Katar and Shayera were responsible for ensuring the general populace's obedience to the Empire and among their duties was prisoner transportation. It was this duty they were carrying out when the pair's patrol craft was pulled through a wormhole before crashlanding on Earth nearly five thousand years ago. Surviving the crash, Katar and Shayera found themselves on an unfamiliar world in a foreign system. Seeking out a settlement, the pair found their way to Memphis.

The Egyptians were astonished by the pair of Thanagarians and immediately became enamoured with their visitors due to the resemblance of their armour to the god, Horus. Welcomed with open arms, the pair were worshipped as gods by the people who believed that Horus had blessed them with his children. However, one of the high priests, Hath-Set, grew envious of the attention and worship the pair received. Craving it all for himself, Hath-Set began to covet Shayera as well, stalking the woman until he began to obsess over her.

However, when the high priest finally confessed his feelings to Shayera, she spurned his affections choosing to remain loyal to Katar. In vengeance, Hath-Set planned to murder the two aliens exposing them as flesh and blood instead of the gods the people believed them to be. Poisoning their drinks in order to weaken the pair of Thanagarians, Hath-Set had their unconscious bodies moved to his sacred chamber where he planned to carry out their murder as a sacrifice to his own god. Using a knife made from the heart of a meteor, the blade cursed Katar and Shayera to forever be reincarnated, only to fall in love all over again. Then, at the point when their love for each other was greater, the hourglass would turn, and they would both die before their time.

Since that first death, Katar and Shayera have lived out hundreds of lives, each different from the last and plagued with the memories of those that came before. Each life followed the same template, the pair would grow up, start their lives and eventually find the other, fall in love and then watch the other die. Sometimes one would die years before the other, other times they would die together, but no matter the lifetime the pair were forced to endure one tragic end after another.

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

This latest reincarnation of Katar Hol has been slowly piecing together his past lives, using his knowledge of history to run the Midway City Museum of Ancient History. Unlike previous iterations, he has yet to meet his Shayera and instead has been working as an archeologist to recover artifacts from around the world while leading a double life as a vigilante. Cursed with an insatiable need for justice, Katar has found himself unable to ignore the troubles of the world and has single-handedly taken it upon himself to clean up Midway City. Recovering his Nth Metal armour, he's been dubbed both a 'Guardian Angel' and the 'Hawkman' by the local media despite his heavy-handed methods.

Seeking a way to end the curse put on him by Hath-Set, Carter's passion for archeology comes searching for the same knife that had cursed himself and Shayera. Unfortunately, he has yet to discover the blade leading him to continue his search whenever he has time away from the museum.

On an author level, I believe Hawkman could be an interesting character for me to portray. Given his history and greater scope, he has a lot in common with Thor while having less popular mythos than the likes of Batman meaning it'll require less cooperation and sharing on my part. His power levels and abilities allow him to travel the globe and interact with other players and characters for both collaborations or large scale events.

Hawkman's rougher personality will likely be a challenge for me to portray but at the same time, I think it could be fun playing a character who is rougher around the edges and not afraid to speak his mind. For the time being, I'm going to be keeping Carter strictly Earthbound and doing small arcs to get my feet wet before looking into a grander scope and using Thanagar and the other mythology attached there. It is my intention to also have Hath-Set and Vandal Savage be one and the same ala DC's Legends of Tomorrow. I really like the contrast between the two characters in much the same way I did when I pitted Thor against Vandal (at the excellent suggestion of @Morden Man).

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

Characters I Intend to Use:
-Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman
-Vandal Savage
-Gentleman Ghost
-Shadow Thief
-And probably others but I don't want to get ahead of myself.

M A G I C:

Known by many names across numerous cultures, magic is an invisible arcane force which flows through all living creatures and things across the entire globe. Magic first occurred on Earth after the event known as 'The Joining' when a convergence of domains brought beings and creatures of an unknown origin into the same plane of existence. This brought the beings known as 'Witches' to Earth and along with them the source of their powers; magic.

All magic requires either a conduit or a familiar to be cast and a price to be paid. A spell must be cast through a conduit or familiar the same way either must be used to imbue a potion with its magical essence. Despite the use of a conduit or familiar, there are still further requirements for casting magic. Potion based spells require ingredients and careful preparation methods, other spells may require incantations or rituals before being performed. Some may require specific movements during the casting of the spell making the caster dance or move their hands in a particular manner. Others still may require all of the above in some capacity. Any of the above may also simply be a focusing method by the caster and may not be universally applicable

The price of magic varies from individual to individual and act to act. It's most easily seen in the Draoi where their pursuit of arcane knowledge causes their bodies to rapidly deteriorate. However, the price is not always paid by the individual directly and instead may be paid in the loss of a loved one. Payment will always be taken in full, but may also be pre-paid in the form of sacrifice or ritual.

Due to its nature, magic has a wide variety of applications. They've been categorized into the following:

A L C H E M Y:

Alchemy is primarily concerned with the transformation of one material into another. Through this process, Magni are able to create potions, elixirs and other concoctions. Though almost all Magni use alchemy, Draoi are often considered to hold a mastery above other users. This is because alchemy is often a non-Magni's first foray into the world of the arcane. Basic alchemy can be performed by combining magical ingredients that react without the use of a conduit or familiar.

C H A R M S:

Charms are spells that alter perception or allow for influence over others.

Cures are restorative spells meant to heal and soothe wounds.

Curses are dehabilitating spells and are often lethal.

E N C H A N T M E N T S:
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
An enchantment is the act of applying magical properties to an item or object. This can be accomplished using several different techniques but most commonly through the inscription of runes.

H E X E S:
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Hexes are the most common type of spell and the first almost all Magni learn. They range in complexity, some requirely little more than a flick of the wrist to cast while others require complex incantations and specific gestures to prepare. Hexes are generally offensive in nature, although they don't always need to be used in that manner. For example, a basic fireball hex may also be used to light a campfire or a blast of light could instead be sustained to illuminate a dark corridor.

A rune is an inscribed magical symbol. They can be used for a variety of purposes.

A Summons is a type of spell that conjures an object or being to the caster.

W A R D S:

Wards are protective spells.

R U L E S O F M A G I C:

Magic always comes with a price.
The price must be paid in full.
The price will vary from person to person or act to act.
The ultimate price is your life.
Magic must be cast through a conduit or familiar.
Magic can not be cast using another's conduit or familiar.
All conduits must be comprised of precious metal.
All conduits must hold sentimental value.
A familiar can take any form, but its default state should be an extension of its master.
A familiar must remain loyal to its master unless its master deems it free.
A familiar shall not take the form of a human.

A D D I T I O N A L I N F O R M A T I O N:

C O N D U I T S:
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
A conduit is the name given to any object a Magni chooses to wield in order to cast magic. Conduits have two requirements, firstly they must be made of a precious metal. Extensive research has found that the more conductive the metal, the better it channels magic making silver and gold some of the highest sought after materials for conduits. The second rule is that the wielder must have an attachment or sentimental value towards the conduit. Often they are heirlooms passed along by parents although this isn't a fast and hard rule.

The most common conduits tend to be objects that are either worn or easily directed. Rings and wands are among the preferred objects for conduits. A Magni doesn't need to use the same conduit their entire life and can perform a bonding ritual with a new conduit to replace a destroyed or lost one. Likewise, conduits can be re-cast into new objects. A ring could be melted and forged into a necklace or knife. Some Magni bond with multiple conduits, the greatest advantage to this technique is the avoidance of being disarmed in a duel however it does nothing to increase spell potency.

D O P P E L G Ä N G E R:
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
A doppelgänger or fetch, is the unnatural duplication of another human being. These doppelgängers are created when a Familiar breaks their most sacred rule and transforms into human form. By doing this, the Familiar, either intentionally or unintentionally, creates a 'life link' between that human and their self. This life link causes the former Familiar to siphon the human's life force into themselves until eventually they die and the doppelgänger replaces them entirely.

This process, however, strips the Familiar of their natural attributes, turning them human in the process and while it grants them the ability to self-sustain, it also comes at the cost of becoming mortal. It should be noted, that no matter the human's original abilities, the doppelgänger does not inherit them. A Familiar turning into a Jager won't gain the Jäger's abilities nor will it gain a Hexenbrut's magical capabilities.

D R A O I:
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Draoi are Magni who were born human and through a life long study of magic achieved a mastery of the arcane arts. This often has a severe toll on their body, ageing them rapidly and forcing them to find ways to lengthen their own lifespan in the pursuit of knowledge. This pursuit of mystic knowledge awakens an insatiable thirst within the individual often making them dangerously unpredictable. It's not uncommon for Draoi to find themselves in competition with one another. This competition is dangerous for all those involved as Draoi will ultimately murder one another in an effort to absorb their essence, knowledge and power.

There are Draoi who allow themselves to become completely absorbed in their pursuit of power, becoming nothing more than hungry, hollow husks. These Draoi are considered to be lost causes and the destroying of one is considered a public service.

F A M I L I A R S:
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Sometimes known as 'Guardian Angels' or 'Animal Guides', familiars are ancient arcane spirits which bond with some forms of Magni upon their birth. They watch over their newfound 'Master' from the first moment they draw breath, until the last. Familiars tend to favour Hexenbrut above all other forms of Magni, though it's not uncommon to find one that has been drawn to a Draoi or Venari upon either reaching their potential. Like Witches, Familiars came from another realm before the occurrence of 'The Joining'. Their true numbers are unknown but no Hexenbrut has ever been without a familiar.

When a Familiar bonds to a Magni, it absorbs part of that individual's soul. This is what allows a Magni to use a Familiar to cast magic but it comes at a great cost as well. If the Magni's familiar were to die, the pain would be near immeasurable and very few Magni survive the experience. A Magni, especially a Hexenbrut, without a Familiar is often nothing more than a shell of their former self, one barely holding on to its remaining humanity.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, due to the shared soul between Familiar and Magni, were the Magni to die it could have a devastating effect on the familiar. When a Magni passes away peacefully, their soul is content and it leaves their body to re-merge with the piece inside their Familiar. With the soul whole again, the Familiar is free to wander the Earth until it bonds with a new Master. But when a Magni dies in a manner which puts their soul in a state of turmoil, such as a violent death, their Familiar too suffers. Unable to reconstruct the soul, they are reduced to a feral state and act no different than a mindless hellion. A feral Familiar is considered very dangerous and is one of the few times Draoi, Hexenbrut and Jäger see eye to eye.

Also known as 'Fiends' or 'Hellspawn', Hellion is an umbrella term used to describe all manner of creatures and beings. Traditionally Hellions have been seen as threats to humans and therefore persecuted or hunted by the likes of the Jäger or Venari. Throughout time Hellions have included everything from mindless beasts to semi-sentient creatures like dragons or trolls to even cursed humans in the form of lycanthropes and vampyres. Unlike Magni who require a conduit to cast magic, most forms of Hellion have natural magic which manifests in the form of abilities such as a dragon's fire breath.

Roughly translated, Hexenbrut means 'Witch's Brood' and refers to the idea that the Hexenbrut are the children of witches. During the height of their history, the Hexenbrut outnumber the other members of the Magni community at a ratio of nearly three to one. Said to have originally been created due to the union between the hexemalefik Lilith and the human, Adam, the Hexenbrut have an innate, natural talent towards magic.

Magic calls to 'Children of Lilith' like fleeting whispers in the dark recesses of their minds. A Hexenbrut can feel the magic in the world around them the same one might feel the wind or a light rain upon their skin. But in order to use their abilities, they require a conduit. Unleashing magic from one's fingertips, while possible would be extremely harmful to the Hexenbrut, and repeated instances would almost certainly result in death.

Born from the union between mortal and angel, Jäger are enhanced humans containing supernatural abilities. Unlike other types of 'Magni', Jäger aren't actually born with all of their abilities and instead inherit them upon the passing of their predecessor. As such, much of the Jäger society is built upon lineage and family is very important. While Jägers lack the ability to cast spells, they more than make up for it in sheer durability. Infamously hard to kill, Jäger are much faster, stronger and more durable than the average human and possess abilities and talents meant to counter other forms of Magni and Hellions alike. Despite this, the Jäger has an exploitable weakness in the form of Hexenbrut blood. Ingesting the blood of a Hexenbrut removes a Jäger's abilities and renders them Mundane.

The Joining was a union of realms that brought magic into the same plane that Earth exists on. However, the records and origins of the event are long lost to the sands of time. What is agreed upon is that the Joining nearly wiped out all life on Earth. But Earth was spared compared to the other realms that were completely destroyed when magic conjoined them into the same plane of existence.

A collective term used by the magical community, the name Magni is a grouping that can refer to Draoi, Jäger, Hexenbrut or Venari. Variations are commonly heard include 'Maj' or 'mage. Some terms however such as sorcerer/sorceress or wizard are seen as more derogatory or demeaning. The term 'witch' is revered by the Hexenbrut, at least those educated in their culture and referring to oneself as a witch is seen as a major faux pas.

A collective term used by the magical community for humans. The term 'mundane' is seen as derogatory in most uses. Derivative terms such as 'mundies' are also commonplace. The human phrase 'a case of the Mondays' is actually a misnomer of a Magni expression 'case of the Mundies' referring to a Magni having a hard time producing magic. Other terms such as 'Norms', 'Normies' have been used to refer to a human. Given the popularity of some fiction, the term 'muggle' has also been adopted by the Magni community.

The Venari are the offspring of Hexenbrut and Draoi who possess limited magical potential. This potential on its own is not enough to manifest any abilities, but through the use of amplification runes, similar to those used in enchanting, a Venari can boost their abilities and even embed specific spells onto their bodies.

Venari are considered to be a bit of a wildcard in the Magni community. Throughout history, they've aided everything from Draoi to humans to the Jäger and the Hexenbrut. Due to their dual nature, they feel no true allegiance and more often than not act in a way that is for self-gain. Once considered a rarity, Venari now make up the majority of the Magni community leading to a major loss in history and society.

The 'Mothers of Magic' or 'Sisters of Lilith', witches or 'Hexemalefik' were transported to Earth during an event known only as 'The Joining'. Originally from another domain of existence, witches are powerful higher beings and considered the originators of all magic on Earth. While descriptions vary from source to source, witches are exclusively referred to as being female, however, in actuality, a witch may take any shape she chooses.

Thought to be near ageless, most of them were hunted down and killed by the Jäger though, the witches' bloodline survives on through the 'Hexenbrut'. The 'Hexenbrut' or Witch's Brood are descendants of the original witches and contain within them magical potential inherited from the ancient beings. The first Hexenbrut was said to occur when the most powerful of the Hexemalefik, Lilith, laid with the human 'Adam' and bore his children.
