Current "Doing your best" does not mean working yourself to the point of a mental breakdown. Its no longer your best at that point.

the bad thing about being bullied is that every time it happens it steals a little piece of who you are if it happens enough little by little you become a little less of who you were meant to be.

Bruce Wayne, Pamela IsleyNick Fury Jean Gray and Logan Howlette

Location: Academy.
Interacting With: Each other.

“..it’s time, Pamela…”

Reaching a hand out to her, his distinguished figure stood in the doorway, Bruce gave her an encouraging smile, motioning with his head towards the rather large polished oak doors that separated them from the students waiting outside… the doors that stood separating them from their daughters…

Waiting until she had taken his hand, his feet urging them both back a couple of steps, and out the administration room, he turned to face the door, his intense eyes flicking about the familiar figures in front of him. Nick Fury… Jean Grey… Logan Howlette… Along with a few others; they were people he had grown to trust closely over the time they had all worked on bringing the Academy to life. Guiding her across the room and back over to the group standing before the door, giving each of them a small nod, Bruce came to a stop before them, “..before we go out there; I want to thank you all for your hard work. None of this would have been possible without you.”

Nick turned at the sound of footsteps, watching Bruce and Pamela approach. Keeping his eye on the headmaster, he nodded at his words. Turning his head slightly, he glanced at his companions, before speaking, “There’s still a lot of work to be done. But this, is certainly a start.”

Standing off to the side, leaning against the door’s threshold with his arms crossed over his broad chest and a cigar perched between his lips, Logan nodded his agreement with the director’s statement.

”Can’t say there won’t be trouble, though.” he gruffed, thinking mostly about his own kid.

“Trouble, yes… but nothing we can’t handle. Right, Logan..?” Her bright red lips turning up in a knowing smirk, throwing a playful wink in the mans direction, Jean slid her hands down into the back pockets of her jeans, her hip jutted out to the side as she turned her attention back over to Bruce and Pamela, “And besides, I doubt there’s anything that these kids can do that we didn’t when we were their age…”

”Hmmph.”

”Underestimating others’ abilities is often the first fall from success.” Nick replied, turning his one-eyed gaze onto Jean, well aware that that was not what she had meant, but willing to try and keep the conversation civil.

Listening to the conversation, Pamela kept her eyes on the door, this last barricade to her daughters. She was trying to find a reason to not simply tear it apart. Flicking her gaze towards Jean at her words, she raised a brow. ”Jean, dear, please keep your panties on your hips. No one wants to see that.”

“Pamela, dear, I remember the days when you used to be fun… what a shame. I do apologize that I couldn’t make it to the funeral.” Her own brow quirking, bright red lips pursing slightly in a sneer, Jean kept her gaze trained on the woman in front of her, making it clear that she wasn’t backing down.

Logan exchanged a sympathetic look with Nick and Bruce.

”Some of us are well aware of our allure that we don’t need to flaunt it all the time.” Pamela replied in a disinterested way, as if unconcerned with the way the conversation had turned. ”A pity that does not include you.”

“Allure..? Don’t make me laugh… I wouldn’t associate that word with you; not since you were… twenty..? Thirty years younger..?” Scoffing out a laugh, a hand lifting to run back through her long vibrant red locks, pushing them to a single side, Jean smirk grew slightly, “Pamela, you wouldn’t know sex appeal if it came and bit you in the ass. I mean, do you even still fit in your old suit- or have the back rolls grown too large, and the boobs too saggy..?”

The sound of porcelain shattering filled the room, and as Logan retracted his claws back into his fist, the older man shared a moment’s connection with the two redheads, unbothered by the broken vase pieces littering the wooden floor.

”Shut it.” He looked back to Bruce, silently begging for him to continue before either woman felt like talking again. Redheads.

Clearing his throat, giving Logan a silent and appreciative glance, Bruce gave Pamela’s hand a gentle squeeze before he stood himself tall again, quickly working to once more gain the control over the situation that he had lost to the two women, “..hm… yes, well… nevertheless, despite our… slight disagreements… none of this would have been possible without each of you lending a hand to our cause. Now, before we go out and meet the students, there are a few things I need to bring up to your attention…”

Smile disappearing, replaced by his normal serious disposition, Bruce glanced between the three of them before allowing his gaze to once more meet with Logan’s, “..firstly, we have, as you know, some rather… troubling students that will be attending the academy. Logan, I sent you a list of names that I would like you to keep an eye on- pay special mind when handling the Quinzel-Valeska children. I have had dealings with them before; they are just as, if not more of a handful than their parents.”

Logan nodded.

Pamela opened her mouth to retaliate at Jean’s words, but closed it, rather begrudgingly, at Bruce’s words. She wouldn’t forget this, that bitch would get what was coming to her. ”Harley was never that bad, really.” she said instead, turning her gaze away from Jean, resisting retaliating in other ways than words.

“..opinions based purely on what side of her you saw…” Frowning, a slight crease appearing between his eyes, Bruce let his words hang in the air before he continued on, “Secondly, we have members of the Wakandan royal family attending the academy. Now as such, they have a standing agreement at being able to leave the school grounds in order to tend to matters pertaining to their nation. In addition to this, after speaking with Arthur Curry on the matter, there are two students who will be commuting to the academy each morning rather than living on grounds. Young miss Paradise Kalawai’a, and mister Kaimana Curry will be staying close by campus, in a beach-side cabin belonging to Arthur himself… now, miss Kalawai’a also has long standing health issues and medical needs, so please be sure to keep this in mind when interacting with her.”

Logan shook his head, scoffing quietly. Already he didn't like the way this was going.

"So we got Gods, criminal children expected to behave like assholes, entitled parents who give their children special treatment that puts their kids above the rest, and a fuck-ton of 'pets' that will cause more distraction than any 'emotional companion' should be allowed." Logan rolled his eyes, puffing out a breath of smoke from his cigar. "Are we done here? We've only got a week or so before this place goes to shit."

Nick turned his gaze to Logan, his stance its usual intimidating and commanding style as he patiently waited for the other man to finish his grumbling. ”I’m well aware of the problems that could arise. The students will remain under control.” He said calmly, believing them to prove that they weren’t as bad as some of the groups he had had to deal with. ”In any case, the world may yet have need of the students. We’d best do the best we can by them.”

Logan hunched his shoulders, pulling the cigar from his mouth as he turned his body away from the group.

”You obviously don’t have any idea what these kids are capable of. I don’t think any of us really do. I just know that some of them are a lot more like us than we want to give them credit for. And that ain’t a good thing.” he muttered before taking his leave.

”I know the parents. Preparations are in place” Fury replied after him, before shaking his head, glancing towards Bruce, ”Yes, the children could be dangerous. We know that. Everyone knows that, and that’s why they are here.” he said, ”So they don’t screw up the world. I rather enjoy living here. Shall we?” He nodded towards the door, taking his eye of the headmaster.

There were more things that needed to be pointed out. He knew that- but right now, with everyone on edge, there was no point in poking the dragon. The frown evident over his weary features, his hand lifting to rub roughly at his hair in what was a mix of frustration and anxiousness. Bruce let out a sigh.

“..no use in waiting any longer…”

Shaking his head, his hand falling back to his side, Bruce glanced around at the others for a moment. It was now or never. Giving them a quick nod of his head, his body maneuvering around the two women, he lifted his hand, his palm reaching out to take hold of the door handle so that he could open it for them all, causing the light from outside to come streaming in as he glanced back at the rest of them, “..come on; it’s time.”

He blushed at Prince’s words and actions, bowing his head again. “T-thank you, P-Prince. You’re t-t-to g-good to me.” He said softly, stuttering slightly. He tried to compose himself, but knew that that was a futile gesture as Prince could just as easily cause him to be flustered once more.

Penny found herself growing angry at Damien's words. She curled her hands into fists, looking to him. “The difference is, you knew how to fight, Damien. I don’t know squat about fighting with my Phoenix Wing magic. And I could really hurt people. One song, done right, I could kill everyone. I won’t risk that. I’m terrified of this magic, and I don’t want to expose others to it, particularly in a dangerous situation. I will not go.” Penny was firm on that, she would not go. She didn’t think she could go. Not safely.

She turned towards the door, starting for it. “Well, we can’t all be perfect. “Karn. She’d failed him, as she had Jasmine. As she had Ariel. “Don’t remind me of my failures, I know them well.” She yanked the door open, and stalked out, trying not to make it seem like she was running. She wasn’t. Not sparing a glance for the others around the guild, she walked towards the job board, yanking a random job off the board.

She wasn’t giving weak excuses. They weren’t weak to her. She started out the guildhall, passing her sister but giving no indication she even saw her there. Angrily, she reached up to dash at her eyes, furious with herself for the few tears there. She wasn’t weak. She looked down at the jon, the flying piranha’s. It didn’t seem particularly interesting, and she sighed. She would not go back in there. She knew that if she did, she’d end up having to stay, to go with the group to the island. And she couldn’t allow that to happen. It might be wrong to just walk out like that… but she couldn’t do anything about that.

Standing outside the guild, she read the job she’d taken.

Not resisting as Prince lifted his head up, Michael knew he shouldn’t be surprised at his friends actions, and yet he was. Constantly. At the kiss on his forehead, Michael blushed deeper. He knew that the catman could very well ingest his magic, and that he was resisting his instinct to do just that. He sighed softly, still unable to tell if Prince was joking or being serious. And Michael wasn’t sure which one he wanted it to be, so he merely nodded.

At Prince’s questions, Michael tried to get his thoughts into order, ”J-j-just doing j-j-jobs and t-t-things… Uriel s-s-suggested I g-g-o to the island… there m-m-might b-be the Zodiac Keys there… s-some of t-them at least… N-no one knows w-what happened to t-the F-Fairy T-Tale mages that d-didn’t g-get stuck on t-the island… “ he swallowed, trailing off. He didn’t know how to explain why he wanted to go to the island… but he thought it would be something that he needed to do, to see.

Like maybe he would find answers there. To what questions, he didn’t know.

Lavena Ó Faoláin

Location: Atlantic Ocean.
Interacting With: Cyrus Saenz (@YoshiSkittlez)..

Was she still swimming? She didn’t know. She could very well just be floating… but she could swear that she was moving her arms and legs. Was that just a dream? Was this? Would she wake on the plane, in a few hours time to it landing? She sighed softly, her body cold… heavy… she felt like if she stopped moving, she’d sink… But… Was she moving… ? Lavena had no idea anymore, and she reached up to brush some of her red locks out of her eyes, tucking the wet hair behind an ear. She brushed water away from her eyes, sighing heavily.

She was moving… but she had been stationary entirely too long, the motion of the ocean simply pushing her forward… had she been turned around? What had she been swimming too? As she lowered her hand away, it came slick with watery blood, and she blinked. She’d cut herself… that was right. She’d crashed into something sharp, hadn’t she? She shook her head, and started to move again. Was that a voice, someone screaming?

"I've done it!"

Done what? She pondered that a few seconds, treading water where she was. She blinked after a few moments, and shook her head once more. What had she been thinking about? Oh. Right. Someone had been screaming. Well, there was a lot of someone’s screaming. Something about the lighthouse… THAT’S where she’d been going. Turning her thoughts to the lighthouse, she suddenly cursed. She couldn’t leave someone screaming for help. As she swam towards the noise, she concentrated on focusing. She had to get out, and this delay was just annoying, but she couldn’t do it. She’d already lost her prototype, she couldn’t lose her soul too.

”I’m coming damn it! Don’t get your knickers in a twist!” She shouted back, ”Just freezing my ass off.” she was a tiny little woman, why was she doing this? She was probably frozen solid already. Soon coming across the older man whose lap she had fallen into, the guy who had tried to save her. She blinked, reaching up to rub at her eyes again. Was she seeing things? What was the chances she’d run into him again in the water?

”Oh. Hi. You know, thanks for trying to save me and all… my hands were sweaty… “ She trailed off lamely, swallowing painfully around her sore throat. She tilted her head, The man was using some sort of flotation, from overthrown luggage. While it was smart... she didn't think he could move too well like that. ”I ain’t gonna push ya, you’ll have to swim. You can swim right?” She asked, wondering if he’d except help from from her- she was younger then him and a girl. He seemed the type to be a little sexist. Maybe she was jumping to conclusions… She shook her head, trying to focus once more.

”Look, I’m freezing, I’m not entirely sure anything is real, but there’s a lighthouse, we might as well swim towards it.” She said wearily, treading water where she was and waiting for him to answer. If he didn’t, she was just going to swim off to the lighthouse and get out of this goddamn water.

Barca Ashur Xavier

Location: Academy.
Interacting With: Lavi Kyle (@Ejected).

Barca sought to compose him after first the Spider-boy, and then the dog. He studied Glaber, the owl was still asleep, and after a moments thought, Barca gently poked the owl. Glaber stirred, made a small noise and then tucked his head under his wing further. Well. At least he was alive. ”Lazy.” he muttered to the owl, but smiled to himself glad that the owl was alright. ”Been out all night partying, I take it.” He said softly to him with amusement in this voice, before he once more composed himself. Almost tentatively he reached out to the thoughts around him, closing his eyes and warily avoiding any thoughts that seemed like the dogs.

If so, he really needed to put him on a leash.

Was that directed at him? Amused, Barca followed the thought. He would have to correct whoever it was that it was not his dog. He was quite happy with his owl. He was shocked however to find out she was coming over to him, and he opened his eyes, glancing up at the girl with curiosity. At her thought on Glaber, he had to agree, nodding his head slightly. That was always the problem with mind reading. Sometimes he found himself answering unspoken thoughts. ”I’m fine.” He said softly, flinching slightly as she played the scene over in her head.

”The boy did not mean to do it, and there was no harm done.” he said, shrugging as if it was nothing. ”Incompetence should not be punished in anycase. The boy will learn.” He rose in one fluid motion, smoothing his outfit of any crinkles, dirt and grass, offering the girl his hand. ”I am Barca Ashur Xavier.” He said in a confident manor, ”You seem interested in my Owl. You can have a closer look at him, if you wish. I do apologise, he is asleep right now. But he is a rather beautiful and unique creature.” he said

He had made note of the announcement, but believed they had a few moments given that they were already in the courtyard. A quick look around told him that other students were still gathering, spurred on by the announcement but none seemed to be in a hurry to gather. No doubt there would be a few moments wait time before the headmaster made his appearance. ”And no, the dog is not mine. I believe he got away from his owner… although he didn’t seemed distressed. Just wanted a place to pee.” He said absently, looking back to the girl, waiting for her response.

Connor Tony Stark, Salyssa Moone and Tobias Coulson

Location: The Courtyard; The Academy.
Interacting With: Each other, Ambrose Wilson and Benjamin Parker (@YoshiSkittlez).

Turning his attention to Akila, Tobias kept the dog under control, a rather surprising feat for him. He looked up at Connor’s words, bouncing slightly as if full of energy. “Your friend might be in trouble?” He asked curiously before nodding, “Let’s go find him! Why would he be stuck to something?” He asked curiously, before shrugging, looking to Salyssa, “We’ll help, right?” He asked, patting Akila as she sat, resting her weight against his leg. She looked up at him with adoring eyes, seemingly content where she was.

”Ben is the son of Peter Parker… and isn’t use to his webs yet. He tends to get stuck a lot.” Connor said to Tobias, a little amused as he continued to look about them.

“Of course we are going to help, Tobi… is that not what friends are for..?” Chuckling softly at her friend, the sound filling the air as it passed through her lips, Salyssa cast a rather quick glance around their area, her gaze flicking from person to person as she stepped closer to Connor, her curiosity piquing, “..Peter Parker..? I have read some of his articles- well, I have read some articles that include his photographs. He is very talented.”

Giving a gentle smile in Connor’s direction, her hand lifting to adjust the strap of her bag on her shoulder, she paused, her attention drifting back out to the crowd, “..is there anything we should be looking for in particular..? Other than… spider webs..?”

Connor gave that question a few minutes thought, ”There might be some destruction… He doesn’t exactly know how to stop… “ he said, ”A few times, we’ve just been standing or sitting around talking and then “Woosh!” he’s gone,” Connor said, looking to Salyssa and Tobias, He paused a moment longer, before saying ”I just hope he isn’t stuck to a wall somewhere… “

Turning his gaze back over the crowd, seeking any sign of his friend. He was sure he caught sight of him, but then he was gone. Where, who knew. With a glance towards the other two, before he started off to where he had thought he had seen Ben. ”I saw him this way… “

Tobias kept Akila’s leash wrapped around his hand, glancing about them curiously, ”So we just look for the kid getting stuck to a bunch of stuff? Should be easy!” he said cheerfully, grinning at Salyssa ”Isn’t this a blast?”

“Definitely; it reminds me of the last time we were in Peru… someone else I know tends to find himself walking into trouble without meaning to…” Quirking a brow, Salyssa shot Tobias a knowing look as she began following after Connor, the glance lasting but a few moments before she turned back to continued on with their search, “..walking off a cliff edge is not something that I would recommend; though, in that particular situation, I am sure your friend might have been at an advantage with his webs…”

Tobias laughed, ”I can’t help it! There’s just so many interesting things around!” He said cheerfully, following after them, shrugging ”And so much to do!”

Connor chuckled, ”Well, yes. If he could learn control of them, they’d be great for him.” he said, ”What were you two doing in Peru?” he asked as he looked about, wondering if he should suggest to Ben they put a tracker on him so this wouldn’t happen all the time.

“Oh, uhm… my mother is an archaeologist…” A little caught off guard by the question, though not at all unwilling to provide him with the answers he sought, Salyssa turned her attention over to Connor once more, her eyes sparkling lightly as she spoke about the topic, “..she will actually be teaching the subject here at the academy.”

Connor turned his gaze to Salyssa, ”Wow, really? That’s pretty cool, unlocking the mysteries of the past and all.” he said in a fascinated tone, ”Who is your mother?” he asked, trying to figure it out, but a little unsure. There were so many beings out there, who were now connected to the Academy that it was hard to keep track of them all.

Recalling that he was meant to be looking for Ben, he turned his gaze to the area around them once more,

”Was that him? Something zoomed nearby.” Tobias said cheerfully, pointing and then shrugging, ”I think anyway.”

Turning her head, her eyes narrowing as she looked over in the direction Tobias mentioned, Salyssa brought her hands together in front of her stomach, her brows furrowing slightly as she continued to look with the others, “..huh..? O-Oh, my mother is June Moone… though, you may know her by Enchantress…”

Connor thought for a moment, before nodded, ”I think I have heard of her, but it might have been in passing with my father… Still, I think that’s a fascinating career” He said, as he looked towards were Tobias seemed to think he’d seen Ben. There was nothing there now, and Connor frowned, wondering how long they could chase after Ben.

Maybe he should search from above… But Connor was a bit reluctant to do that, and so he continued looking about them. If Ben had been there… and Connor had seen him just over there… It was no use trying to figure out what direction Ben was going, when he could be anywhere. ”He’s gone now… “

“..y-your friend is quite fast at moving about…” Brows creasing slightly, her head the last thing to turn, Salyssa gave her full attention back to both men, her step slowing to a stop beside them, “..what are we to do now..?”

Connor nodded, sighing softly ”Might have to take to the skies to look for him… “

Tobias gave a shrug, ”Its like a zip line! You just look away and it’s gone!” he said with a laugh, ”Well, I can’t fly, but I’ll stay right here!” he promised.

“..you might not be able to fly; though it has never before stopped you from attempting to do so…” Shaking her head lightly from side to side, another soft chuckle falling through her lips, Salyssa hesitated, her gaze lingering on Connor. The last time she’d left the ground, he’d reacted badly… what if that happened again..?

Tobias grinned, ”Well, I figure it’s only logical… Water… Earth… Maybe I’ll get fire and wind too!” he said, as it it made sense, crouching by Akila and patting her, ”Besides, we’re already on a rescue mission right? Don’t want two do we?” he said with a chuckle.

Connor listened to the two talk, wondering if he could stay in the air without hurting anyone, if it was worth the risk… but he couldn’t leave Ben stuck to something. He turned to look at them, hesitating as he saw Salyssa looking at him, ”Is something wrong?” he asked, a little confused. Had he done something wrong?

Blush creeping out over her cheeks, her gaze tearing from his, Salyssa shook her head lightly from side to side, “..no… nothing…”

Perplexed, Connor watched her another moment or two, ”Oh. Ben. Right.” He said after a moment, looking around them once more, reaching for his pack, but still hesitating. ”I’m not so good in the air.” he admitted.

Tobias looked to Salyssa curiously as he threw an arm around Akila, keeping the dog by his side, debating about saying something before he shrugged to himself, looking to Akila, ”Salyssa can do the flying!”

“..T-Tobi..!” Eyes widening, her attention turning back around so that she was able to look at him, Salyssa shifted slightly, shaking her head lightly from side to side as if in an attempt to dissuade him from his suggestion.

”What? It’s true! You can fly!” Tobias said, looking up at her and smiling, not quite sure what he had done wrong as he looked at her cheerfully.

”Its okay if you don’t want to.” Conner said softly, ”I can use my suit.” He didn’t want to force her to do anything she didn’t want to, and Ben was his friend. He could do this.

“..i-it is not that… I-...” The blush on her cheeks growing stronger, her head dropping, Salyssa stared down at her hands, watching on as her fingers played with the hem of her top.

Connor looked towards her, stepping closer, but hesitated on seeking to comfort her, ”What is it?” he asked with concern.

“..y-you did not like it when I flew…” Her voice soft as she spoke, Salyssa kept her gaze on her hands, refusing to meet with his eyes.

She was worried about his reaction? ”Oh… No… I was just surprised.” he said quickly, ”I didn’t expect it… which is probably foolish given where we are… I’m sorry… “

Pausing, her head lifting so that she could let her gaze meet with his, she silently watched him. He was sorry..? Thrown once more at his words, hesitant, Salyssa slowly reached her hand out, letting it hover between them as she offered it for him to take.

Connor hesitated for a handful of seconds, before reaching out and taking her hand, unsure what she was going to do, he nevertheless gave her a smile.

Taking hold of his hand, her fingers entwining with his, Salyssa gave a gentle push off from the ground below them, her feet curling up slightly beneath her as her body lifted up and into the air, bringing him with her as she did lifted the both of them high enough that they were able to see a full body over those milling about the courtyard. This wasn’t the first time she had done this- having spent a good portion of her life flying after Tobias in order to keep him from toppling to his doom in the name of curiosity, it had become quite the regular thing… though this was different… this wasn’t Tobi…

Turning her head, daring a glance over at Connor, she bit down softly upon her lower lip, her nerves once more attempting to take control of her as she spoke to him, her voice still soft, “..can-... can you see your friend..?”

Connor wasn’t sure what he expected… but suddenly being lifted into the air, not under his own power… Well, it was certainly different to flying himself. He was somewhat nervous, but he decided to trust Salyssa, and met her gaze when she looked over at him. He gave her a smile, hoping it was reassuring. At her words, he turned slightly to look about, checking the area around them carefully, glancing up along the buildings, he was about ready to give up hope when he saw Ben, being propelled towards the schools gates, out of control. ”There!”

Nodding lightly in understanding, sharing a quick glance with Tobias below, Salyssa moved them forward and through the air above the crowd, remaining silent as she glanced about, lowering them back to the ground only once she had spotted an open space next to where the guy they had been searching for came to a stop, his body wrapped tightly together with that of a woman thanks to the webs they both seemed caught up in; the mere sight causing a soft giggle to slip through her lips.

“..heheh… Ben I assume..?”

Connor made sure to keep his hand on hers, holding it securely. When they were on the ground once more, Connor took in the sight that greeted them. He sought to keep his composure, although it was quite a challenge. ”Well… Uh, that’s certainly one way to get a girl, Ben.” he said, chuckling lightly.

”Do you need a hand… or are you alright there?”

Jordan Evelyn Burkstein

Location:Flight BAW229; Los Angeles to London.
Interacting with: No one

Jordan could hear someone yelling. Calling out the same names over and over again. Isuara and Emily. The grief and fear in that voice was enough to make her own heart break. Alone, she didn’t have anyone to worry about, but this person had two people. Part of her was jealous at that, even as she recognised the person’s grief. How many lives would be lost, how many families torn apart? Tearing her mind away from those depressing thoughts, she continued to swim, shoving her way through luggage that was just beginning to sink, and bits of plane. As her hand hit something soft, cold and squishy, Jordan flinched back.

She was sure it was a body as she stopped swimming, swallowing back her fear. She doggie paddled closer, intending to get a look and maybe find some ID, so that the poor sole could be identified as dead, so they’re family wouldn’t have to wonder. It was a child’s body, her eyes closed, hair floating out around her, arms floating, hitting luggage around her, water washing over the young girls chest. The child couldn’t be more than five, and Jordan sighed. As she was reaching to at least move the girl to something she could float on, so her body wouldn’t be dragged under, she saw that the girls chest was moving, just slightly.

As the girl made a small noise, whether one of pain or just of fear, Jordan looked up. The girls eyes were open slightly. Jordan’s heart leapt, and she gathered the child to her, ”Its going to be okay, little one. I want you to hold onto this luggage, okay? Just for a minute. I’ll get the life jacket on you, okay sweetie?” She said, helping the little girl to fasten herself to the luggage, before she with some difficulty shrugged off the life jacket and got it on the little girl, struggling to buckle it but eventually she had it on the girl. With the girl no longer at risk of sinking and drowning, Jordan held onto her hand, giving it a squeeze. Now, even if the girl passed out, she’d be able to keep her afloat. As someone once more yelled out for Emily, she glanced to the kid.

The kid had to belong to someone, didn’t they? Was this man calling out for her? ”If she’s a kid, I have her. FInd land, we can meet up there.” She called back, holding the girl to her for a moment as she contemplated which way to go. Her eyes scanned the area around them, seeking any sign of land. A dark, tall blob against the sky seemed promising, and as her eyes adjusted against the glowing fires from the wreckage, she saw that it was a lighthouse. She filled air into her lungs and let it out in a shout to all those around her, if there were survivors, then she’d let them know where to go. ”Swim to the lighthouse! Swim to land!”

She got herself sorted with the kid, making sure she could swim with her, and keep the girl afloat. She settled herself into an awkward swim, feeling her body growing colder. She didn’t want to stop and think what the child must be feeling. She was so small… She needed to get this girl out of the water, even with the added warmth the jacket was bound to give her, the girl had had a good soaking. She needed to get her out of the water, before she succumbed to the cold temperatures.

How long would that be, for a child? Hesitating a moment, she shook her head, before starting to swim again, using her legs and feet more than her arms now. ”Its going to be okay, child.” she’d say every so often as she sought land. The lighthouse seemed to be both drawing closure, and staying far away. She wondered if it was her own mind playing tricks on her, but there wasn’t much that she could do if that was true.

She drew in air in a rhythmic motion, concentrating on that as she swam. She checked on the girl every so often, making sure she was still breathing. ”Nearly there… Just hold on, okay? I’ll get you to land… “ She trailed off, her body aching from the cold. And she was tired. So very tired. Without the life jacket, it seemed every harder to swim, to stay afloat. And her arms ached from dragging the child with her. She paused, and pushed the girl in front of her. She began to swim once more, using the child as a kind of kick board, pushing her instead of pulling.

”Not much further… “ She had to believe that, or she wouldn’t be able to go on.

Stuck in the water, Lavena treaded water as she pondered what to do. She was sure she could hear voices, and knew she should try finding the people they belonged to, maybe even the old guy that had tried to save her… had he gotten out? Feeling somewhat guilty despite the fact that she couldn’t have fought gravity. Blinking water out of her eyes, even though it was a futile gesture, and glanced about her. Her case, heavy in her right hand, seemed to weigh her down. She couldn’t bring herself to let it go however and instead brought it close to her chest, part of her hoping that it would give her extra warmth. She knew she should get moving, that the longer she stayed stationary, the colder she got. For now, her body ached, the pains from the tumble and fall into the water making themselves know. She knew that that was a good thing, that it was when her body went numb that she was in trouble.Which didn’t stop the fact that she was shivering as her body sought to generate warmth.

She wanted nothing more than to be out of the water and to never see it again. The only bright thing about being in the water was that it wasn’t a small space. Although she was still going to only have showers from then on. And never go swimming again. And she was going to get a dishwasher. No water immersion for her ever again. She paused in her motion a moment, before she realised that her thoughts were wandering. Had she hit her head? Or was it an effect of the water?

”I have to get out of here.” she said to herself, as if that would reaffirm the idea in her mind. She began to swim, her case dragging her down slightly. Yet she couldn’t bring herself to let it go. It was her life’s work. She couldn’t just get rid of it… As she recognised the hopelessness of that thought, she stopped swimming, looking down at the case as she held it against her chest. She had her blueprints, her notes. She could make it again. She just had to survive. Surely her potential employers would understand any delay… She clutched the case tighty, before she swallowed and gathered up her courage.

One by one her fingers let the handle go, tears stinging her eyes as she did so. When the case slid from her, sinking towards the bottom of the ocean, she bowed her head, and closed her eyes tightly and tried not to cry. Would she lose everything here, including her life? She swallowed painfully around the emotional lump in her throat, and began to swim again. There was no turning back, she’d let the case go. She just had to live now. That was all. As if that wasn’t an impossibility right then. She had no idea which way would lead her to land… So she decided to follow the wreckage. Surely if there was land nearby, the waves would lead her to land.

Was that yelling? Was someone shouting? It sounded nearby, but she recognised that sound traveled over water, and she really had no idea where it was coming from. She could very well be imagining it too… She debated a moment as she swam whether or not it was worth the energy to call out, or if she should save her strength. She’d have to stop, or risk inhaling water… She decided to keep swimming. That’s all she had to do. Just keep swimming. Even as she continued to swim, her body was slowly becoming numb, her toes, fingers, nose and the tips of her ears aching painfully before even that faded away to numbness. As is slowly began to spread, Lavena knew that she only had a short amount of time. Her fingers still parted the water, but she could no longer feel the passing of it. It was a rather frightening feeling, as if her fingers weren’t there. Was this what a paraplegic felt? Had she somehow damaged her spine when she fell? Was she even now sinking to the bottom of the ocean, drowning, and this was some sort of dream?

She inhaled air painfully into her lungs, shaking her head. Her thoughts were wandering again. Recognising the danger int hat, Lavena muttered to herself ”Just keep swimming. That’s all you can do. Just keep swimming.” Was there something there? Was it a mirage, or was it truly a lighthouse? Spurred on, Lavena swam towards it. If it was a mirage, well, she would die. If it was land, then she’d survive.
