With the campers having finally arrived after days of anticipation, the Winter session of Second Horizons was officially underway. After gathering the teens at the North Pole in the center of camp to sort them into their bunks for the next two weeks, the groups were released to their cabins in order to get settled and unpack. Snow had begun to fall shortly after they adjourned, but by the evening the sky had cleared its clouds to reveal the gorgeous stars amongst the mountains as a backdrop for the night’s activity.

The cold winter day had rolled into a cold winter’s night, and the campers and counselors alike found themselves huddled by campfires in the annual bonfire tradition. It was customary that on the first night of camp the bunks gathered to play some getting to know you games and roast marshmallows to make smores in order to start the session off on the right foot together. Since numbers were lower this year, each cabin paired up with another to not only encourage friendships in other bunks, but also to save firewood (all of the counselors could agree that chopping wood was their least favorite responsibility, and the less they had to do it, the better). Fetching Fox (Red) and Howling Wolf (Blue) were at one campfire, and Cozy Bear (Green) and Little Hare (Pink) were at the other.

Gwen was excited for an evening spent by the fire- she was looking forward to gazing up at the starry sky and finding the different constellations and couldn’t wait to get to know her new campers better. The brunette had already begun making connections with the first years and thus found herself sitting on a log next to Mickey braiding her hair. Delicately, she twisted and folded the girl’s hair over itself, forming a plait in little to no time.

While Gwen was busy braiding Mickey’s hair, Nick was sitting on the other side of her, watching over the campers and idly sipping at a cup of hot chocolate as he observed. Gwen was a better counselor than he had figured — and his co-counselor Kim was occupied with some other campers — and Nick was wondering why he was even here. Did they even need his help? The two girls seemed like they had it under control. He shook his head and looked away, while Mickey just turned her head slightly to look back at Gwen and ask a question. “Hey, how does it look?”

The brunette smirked, “It looks perfect, if I do say so myself.” She laughed, trying not to seem as though she was bragging about her own handiwork. Braiding and doing hair was one of her many talents after taking care of her younger sister’s hair for so many years when her own mother couldn’t. Grabbing the elastic band that was stored around her wrist, she tied off the end of Mickey’s hair, a job well done. “There! Hopefully you like it.” Gwen took out her phone and snapped a picture from the back so that she could show her.

Mickey was all smiles. She’d never had her hair braided before — at least not by another person, and the end result was great! “Thank you again. Hey, are there traditions around here like this? Like, the bonfire, I mean.” She asked, looking around at the other campers, and off to the other firepit on the other side of the camp, by the other cabins. “How late does this usually go, anyway? I don’t… really stay up late,” she admitted with a shy smile added on; it was more than a little embarrassing to more or less admit she had a bedtime.

Seeing the girl’s smile made Gwen grin widely in return- she loved nothing more than making people happy and that alone made it obvious why she was a counselor. “Of course!” She replied on instinct before focusing on her question. “Hmm, let me think… cabins love pranking each other at least once so expect to see that, on Christmas everyone wears pajamas all day- even on the slopes, and on New Years a few people like to jump into the snow in nothing but their bathing suits and then they end up in the sauna until they can feel their toes again…” She laughed to herself remembering the events from her first year on staff last Winter. “But I won’t spoil them all for you.” Gwen had opted to focus on the fun and wacky traditions, but there were many more things that happened during the session that made Second Horizons unique and fun.

In regards to the end time of the evening’s events, the brunette addressed Mickey’s concerns, “Don’t even worry about it- I know the first day can be a bit overwhelming especially after traveling to get here. Even though I’d love for you to be here the whole time, feel free to stay as long as you would like, and when you want to head back to the cabin one of the counselors can walk with you.”

Meanwhile, at the other campfire, Chloe Chambers sat amongst her cabin-mates from Red as well as the unknown faces from the Blue cabin (if she was being honest, she could barely tell who was in her group and who was in the other since she hadn’t made an effort to remember names). The only people she recognized were that of the counselor who practically fainted earlier when she broke the news that not everyone on the planet watches sitcoms and the boy with the ridiculous accent.

As she mindlessly went through her short program in her head and let her marshmallow set ablaze in the fire (it was sadly not on her training diet so she could not partake in the eating of the smore, only the burning of the ingredients), Chloe glanced at the person sitting next to her out of curiosity. “So… how’d you end up here? Did your parents send you away for the holidays too or are you somehow here by choice?”

A @Kiki is Anxious & @Melissa Collaboration

Rae lifted her hand up, flapping it about as if to wave away her earlier question and shook her head slightly from side to side. ”Nevermind, you can give me the deats later.” She replied nonchalantly before resting her hands on her hips, her head held high as she beamed an energetic smile toward the doll-like female. “I take it you’re the special delivery, am I right?”

Liv’s first impression of Rae was that she was very… glittery. No seriously, why was she covered in glitter? With the blue hair, it was almost as if a Twilight vampire and a mermaid had a baby. Saving that question for after introductions and just ignoring it, the blonde offered the girl a wide smile and stuck out her hand. “That would be correct, I’m Olivia Howard. But you can call me Liv!” The Liberty girl greeted warmly. “It’s really nice to meet you.”

The glitter was honestly something the sea themed ombre haired teen had forgotten. So that was the unfortunate realization that came seconds after she took hold of Liv’s extended hand, a few small clouds of glitter that survived her sonic run there, spilling off her form as she firmly shook the other female’s hand. Probably for longer than needed, but who could blame her for making triple decker sure that the Liberty student was human and not extremely realistic plastic. ”It’s nice to meet you too Liv!” Her tone matched Liv’s in enthusiasm.

”I never thought I’d ever meet a real life Barbie.” If this were text, she might have been mistakenly assumed to be saying it passive-aggressively as sarcastically chipper, but any Disney Channel Movie Fanatic would probably pick up she wasn’t being mean spirited in saying. ”You know my name already so we can skip that and get right to the tour if you want?”

Liv instantly regretted offering her hand to greet Rae, since as soon as they clasped palms, glitter flew everywhere. Trying to be as discreet as possible, the moment the girl let go the blonde smoothed down her white dress politely in an attempt to rid herself of the discarded glitter. She laughed as the comparison was made to the famous fashion doll, as well as the movie, and took the compliment (that admittedly she had received more than once before) in stride. “That’s very sweet of you to say, but I assure you I’m very much human, and always have been unfortunately.” Liv joked, before nodding at the promise of the much anticipated tour. “Sounds great, you can tell me more about yourself on the way.”

”But would you actually admit it if you were- Ohhhh, my bad about that. ” Rae's face scrunched up a little when noticed the glitter she left behind on Liv from the handshake alone, a cringe from how she just kinda christened her white dress with sparkly shades of blue that needed to be shook off.

”Would you believe I was attacked by a gang of faeries?” Only seconds would pass before she admitted rather quickly, ”Okay so maybe it was only one." Quieting down, she watched Liv with a blank face, the hamster wheel of a brain whirling to life as she managed to both space out and listen. Nodding her head slightly as things finished processing, both her thoughts and Liv's words, before finger-gunning her way backwards in a slow walk. ”You got it Liv-Laugh-Love, let's start this tour with a trip to the best bathrooms in the whole school. ”

The blonde nodded in response to the first stop of their tour, a less than enthused voice following a cautious and forced smile. “Great… good to know.” Spike was right, Rae was definitely a little quirky, but hopefully after getting to know her a little better the blonde would warm up. Besides, it was too early on for her to already start having doubts about Rosefell. Sure her brother was pissed beyond belief and coming in with a negative mindset, but his younger sister was much more optimistic about the promise of this new school. As the two began to walk out of the office and back into the hallway, the girl offered her guide a more genuine grin. “So, Rae, how do you like it here?”

”It's school, any kid who says they do like it has an agenda and knows how to use it.” Rae replied, her tone dry as she turned to face forward like Liv. Her hands being shoved into the pockets of her yellow peacoat, keeping in step with the blonde beside her with a slight lead so she could guide them through the hallways.”It has its flaws, and probably more of them than Liberty but once you get the swing of things it's pretty fun to see the things that go on." She gave a wink from over her shoulder before her lips quirked upward in a half smirk.

”Such as, which bathroom to use if you need privacy and a clean space. Or ya know, the easiest place to get an ubereats or food delivery brought here without getting caught because they are kinda stingy with the serving sizes here. ” She added while making small gestures with her hands, before running her fingers through her messy hair.

“You’ve got a point there…” Liv smirked, agreeing that anyone who liked going to school was seriously disturbed. The blonde enjoyed Liberty, but certainly not for the academics. Assignments and exams were the bane of her existence and they would remain so until the end of time. It was only when they arrived at the bathrooms and the mermaid haired girl began to explain that Liv understood why she made it a stop on the tour. It seems as though there were definitely tips, tricks, and loopholes to be learned in order to find your way around Rosefell.

“What other secrets about this place do you have Rae? I want to know them all.”

After a few more stops around the building, Liv thanked Rae for the educational tour and headed on her merry way towards her first class. The quirkiness ended up being quite the positive thing which made for a fun excursion around the school together. Rosefell was definitely no Liberty, evidenced by not only the decrepit building but also the interesting student body, but in the blonde's eyes it was exactly what was needed for her to have the typical high school experience she had always craved. Liv had seen One Tree Hill and Degrassi which had the drama, the romance, the hardships, and she wanted it all- especially the teenage rebellion.

The blonde girl followed the glitter that had fallen off of Rae like breadcrumbs back towards the main office where her already eventful day had started. With a pep in her step, she meandered her way down the winding hallways, excited for what was to come next in her adventures.

Gwen Thomas was cold.

Standing at the North Pole and awaiting her camper's arrival, the green counselor attempted to keep warm by rocking back and forth on her heels and nursing a dwindling cup of hot chocolate in her gloved hand. She had even bundled up this time around- donning a heavy black parka over her green cabin tee shirt and a fluffy pom beanie- but as per usual, the girl was still freezing. Granted, Gwen hailed from New Mexico (plus during the school year, Nebraska) and considered anywhere with an average temperature below 50 degrees cold, but no matter how many times she visited cities that were graced by snow, she was never truly prepared for the chill she'd feel in the air.

In addition to the change in temperature, the past few days of orientation were full of adjustments. New time zone to get used to, new faces to meet, new protocols to follow- however, as a second-year staff member, Gwen wasn't completely clueless as to how things truly went at Second Horizons. She had learned those intricacies last year and thus was prepared and knew for the most part what to expect this time around. That meant stocking her backpack and cabin with snacks for when her campers got the munchies, looking the other way when people decided to trek to the hot springs for a bit of private time, and providing a listening ear to those smitten in a camp romance or love triangle.

Ah yes, relationship drama. A topic that the brunette was unfortunately all too familiar with- at least this year her advice would come from a place of empathy and not just sympathy. While standing there, Gwen stole another glance at her cell phone and was met with a notification-less screen once again. The girl should've already nipped the habit of checking her messages in what was nearly the third month since the break-up, as by now she was awaiting a text or two that would never arrive. What was it that she was seeking so desperately- another apology text? A promise to be faithful that was obviously going to be broken? Some form of closure? Even though Gwen told herself and others that she was over her heartbreak, there was still some part of her that wasn't- after all, finding out that her boyfriend was cheating on her with a peppy blonde sorority girl a week before her midterms didn't allow her the time to fully cope. Maybe the next two weeks would rid her of any lingering negativity or feelings- Second Horizons had the knack to distract campers from the rest of the world for a few moments, why not her too.

Gwen's grip tightened on her clipboard as she was brought back to reality. Organized and tidy, her delicate cursive handwriting was already scattered over the first page of the stack of papers. Although she had gone through the staff training last year, she still had been jotting down important notes throughout the sessions- various things that would be good for her to remember throughout her time here. But when she hadn't been paying attention as things got repetitive, Gwen had taken it upon herself to decorate the back of her clipboard. She had found some paint pens in an arts and crafts bin and had just gone to town- doodling various colorful flowers and leaves as well as her name across the surface. On the off chance she were to misplace it or leave it somewhere, anyone would be able to return it, as it was now unmistakably hers.

Out of the corner of her eye, she could see someone making a beeline directly towards her and her co-counselor, and so her demeanor shifted. A smile reappearing on her face and complementing her delicate features, Gwen greeted the newcomer as soon as he spoke. "It's nice to meet you, Dez- Welcome to Second Horizons! I'm Gwen, one of your counselors for the next two weeks. And this is-" She turned to introduce her fellow counselor, but they had disappeared in the few seconds that her back was turned. "Well, that was your other counselor, but I guess you'll meet them later!" The brunette shrugged but then motioned to the area behind her. "You can drop your things here for the moment, but we'll be heading to the bunk to get settled when more campers from Green arrive."

She searched around once again to see if anyone else from their cabin was present- the only familiar face she noticed was Nate, who looked as though he unfortunately was not making a good first impression with another female camper. Shaking her head with a laugh, as he somehow always found a way to get into sticky situations, she looked back at the dark-haired boy in front of her. "So, Dez, where are you from?" Gwen asked, making small talk as they waited for the others to join their group.
