"did you get your wish?"

"A-ah! Is it!?" Startled, Chunjiro drops the cup measure into the boiling water, then frantically tries to grab it back, wincing when the water is too hot (of course it's too hot! It's boiling!). Thankfully, he manages to pull it out without too much injury, courtesy of the thick callouses on his palms. Looks like all that training was good for something after all. Thanks, dad.

"G-got it," he pants, and Haru flutters around per usual, running away with her words until they run away from her. Chunjiro watches, but whatever Haru was embarrassed by completely passes him by.

"Cooking for two? Yeah, aren't we?" he asks, confused, before replacing the measuring cup and the bag of rice to their proper places. "Well, if there's any extra, we can just make onigiri out of it, or something." In his house, any leftovers were regaled to the twins, who were in their growing phases and tended to always be hungry. Chunjiro got used to his siblings' hungry stares, even Reo's, which he always tried to hide... Chunjiro smiles fondly at the memory. He misses them, loud and chaotic as they were.

"I think that's it. While we wait for it to cook, why don't I give you the tour?" he suggests, putting out his hand and hoping Haru doesn't spontaneously combust. He doesn't get why she was flustered, but he's starting to get used to her funny way of fumbling and backtracking sentences. He doesn't mind it, since she always settles on the right thing in the end. And like he said, Takeru talks way more than Haru does.

After a short but nonetheless eventful house tour, the rice is cooked enough to eat and the two enjoy a good (if slightly bland) breakfast before heading out. On a normal day, Chunjiro would have already been out the door, but the addition of Haru completed flipped his daily routine. Surely, though, his clients won't mind the small delay--this is only the first day after the wedding, who is to say Chunjiro can't enjoy it with his new wife? They will understand.

--That's not to say everything went perfectly. But he can keep that part a secret. Setting his dishes in the sink, Chunjiro surveys his tiny home one more before grabbing his sword and sheath--more for appearance than anything else, but he never leaves the house without securing it to his belt. It makes him feel secure, and besides, civil service is also one of a samurai's duties. If there was to be a threat to the village, himself, or Haru, he would be ready.

"Shall we go? Ka-san?" he addresses her formally, holding his arm out for her. Haru, like him, is most likely familiar with the market, but as it's their first time appearing in public as a married couple, Chunjiro wants to show everyone all is well. Especially his father. He can be scary, and Chunjiro has never really gotten rid of wanting to please him. "I was thinking we would visit the stalls to get groceries for my clients, then drop them off and introduce you. I have some yard work after that, so if you'd like to shop for your--ourselves, please feel free."

Occupation: Samurai
Favorite food: Rice.
Background: A respected samurai who runs a dojo in addition to his daily duties, Jin is well-known as a someone you don't want to cross. His skill with a sword is second to none, and his training is so harsh he's known for having only one or two pupils at a time. How such a stern-looking person like himself got a beautiful wife has been the ongoing talk of the town for as long as Chunjiro can remember. Jin was especially harsh with his eldest, and Chunjiro has many painful memories of being forced to walk mountains barefoot, or duel until his hands bled. In summary, Jin is a man of few words and tough love for his children.

Occupation: Housewife
Favorite food: Miso soup (with soba noodles)
Background: Beautiful, well-respected, and easily the most eligible maiden in the village, Chinatsu enjoyed a good education in her youth, and once had dreams of working for the government. However, her status as a women of marriageable age led her to enter into an arranged marriage at the age of 17, just like Chunjiro. She's made what she can of her position, but many rumors abound about her love life. She, like Jin, is strict on her children, but loves them dearly. It can just be hard to tell sometimes.

Background: Demure and beautiful, Yua is waiting for the day--no, the hour--when she will be married. Taught by her mother in all the ways of a good wife, she is perfect is almost everything she does, and has become quite popular in the village. However, the condition of her father--that they must beat him in an honest swordfight--has made winning her hand difficult. A loving older sister, she worries over Chunjiro, but has been soothed by the reports of her mother that he is doing well on his own.

Age: 14
Favorite food: All of them! 🍚
Occupation: Cook
Background: Like her older sister, Maika is eagerly awaiting the day she grows up, but unlike Yua, has a ways to go. She's childish, clumsy, and butts heads with Takeru constantly, but her aspirations to be as elegant as Yua have spurred her to study the ways of tending to a home. As a result, she has become a very good cook, at least in the eyes of her family. She takes care of much of the shopping, and is regarded by the village as a cheerful, if slightly immature girl who loves to talk.

Nickname: He hates them, but "Take-kun" is common.
Age: 11
Favorite food: Onigiri (rice balls) 🍙
Occupation: Woodcutter
Background: Patience is not usually the first word to describe Takeru, nor the second, nor the hundredth. Indeed, the boy is so stubborn that even his famously patient father has lost his temper a handful of times when dealing with him. His hot-headed nature has denied him the spot as Jin's next successor, and seeing as he throws a tantrum every time Reo wins a Shogi game against him, he's not regaining it anytime soon. Looks up to Chunjiro the most.

First Twin

Favorite food: Squid sushi 🍣
Occupation: Apprentice scribe
Background: The older twin, Reo is much different from Takeru, both in looks and personality. Being a cool and collected soul like his father, Jin had hopes of training him to become a samurai like he did with Chunjiro, but Reo requested specifically to study under the local goverment scribe. His level-headedness and willingness to learn makes him a good pupil and it seems to be something he enjoys as well. He and Yua get along well, both being the quiet sort.

Fourth Brother

Nickname: Kaze (by his siblings), Zu-kun (by Yua)
Age: 7
Favorite food: N/A
Occupation: None
Background: Yua and Reo are quiet. Takeru and Maika are not. As the second-youngest, Izukaze places somewhere in the middle. He gets along with his friends and family, but many have exclaimed over his grown-up way of speaking and "precocious" intelligence. Indeed, he seems almost too smart for his age, and some wonder if his laziness is merely an act. Whatever the truth, he's shown interest in becoming a samurai and Jin has admitted he shows promise. At the moment, he sticks close to his mother and his baby sister, Himari.

Youngest Sister

Nickname: Mari-chan (by her friends), Hi-chan (by her siblings), Mimi (by Chunjiro)
Age: 4
Favorite food: Shaved ice 🍨
Occupation: Child
Background: The baby of the family and a very cute one at that, Himari elicts smiles from everyone, everywhere she goes. She's a joy inside and out, although like any young child, she throws tantrums and sobs a bit when things don't go her way. But nobody faults her for it--nobody faults her for anything, her siblings would say. The youngest is usually the least punished, and Himari is no exception, but she's still loved by her siblings, especially Chunjiro. Unlike her siblings, Himari's hair is light in color, making her stick out even more.
